Tottenham were held to a goalless draw against Brentford on Thursday evening but the match wasn't without incident

Tottenham have been given fresh verdicts on potential red card and penalty incidents during their goalless draw away at Brentford on Thursday evening.

Despite getting back to winning ways last time out against Crystal Palace, Thomas Frank 's side dropped points once again as neither team could break the deadlock at the Gtech Community Stadium. In a very tight game, Brentford enjoyed slightly more possession than their visitors and registered one more attempt on target.

The match was not entirely without incident, though, as there were two major calls made by referee Andrew Madley. The first involved Spurs defender Cristian Romero, who was only just returning from suspension after being sent off against Liverpool before Christmas.

On this occasion, the Argentina international brought down Brentford striker Igor Thiago when he was the last man and appeared to have handled the ball in the process. No foul was given and Romero, quite fortunately, remained on the pitch to see out the game, much to the frustration of Keith Andrews.

Speaking on Sky Sports' Ref Watch, former official Dermot Gallagher was of the opinion that the wrong call had been made, and that Romero should have been given his marching orders. "He challenges for the ball, he doesn't get the ball, he gets Thiago, there's no doubt about that," he explained on Friday morning.

"Is Thiago in possession? Most certainly. He'll skip by and he's away on goal. For me, foul, red card, easy decision."

The second incident went against Spurs, as penalty appeals were waved away when Archie Gray was brought down by Kevin Schade and Nathan Collins in the box. The contact looked minimal on the replays, and Gallagher was inclined to agree with the on-field decision that no penalty should have been awarded.

"I do not think it is a foul because Schade bumps into him," he added. "There is a little bit of a nudge, but if you watch Gray, he actually throws himself forward and uses Collins's calf to go over – I thought no foul."

Now, Frank's side must gear up for a tricky run of fixtures that includes the visit of Sunderland this weekend and a trip to Bournemouth next week. Later this month, they will also host Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup, while a meeting with Dortmund looms in the Champions League.

In the context of the Premier League table, Thursday's stalemate means Spurs remain 12th in the standings and outside the top 10. They are seven points adrift of the top four with 19 games played, meaning qualification for next season's Champions League remains a monumental task.

Thomas Frank is holding his press conference following the 0-0 draw at Brentford in the Premier League on New Year's Day.

Spurs lacked attacking inspiration in a desperately dull game that had the travelling fans singing 'boring, boring Tottenham' along with constant nostalgic chants for former players and managers.

Neither goalkeeper had much to do in either half other than Guglielmo Vicario having to push away a Vitaly Janelt header in the second period while Caoimhin Kelleher comfortably held a Richarlison effort in added time.

While Frank got a good reception from his former fans, the Tottenham supporters appeared to boo him as he walked over to applaud them at the final whistle.

Here are our Tottenham player ratings after the goalless draw at Brentford in the Premier League on New Year's Day

Tottenham returned to Thomas Frank's former club Brentford on New Year's Day and here are our Spurs player ratings from the 0-0 draw.

Frank made three changes from the side that won 1-0 at Crystal Palace with captain Cristian Romero back after his one-game suspension, coming into the line-up with Joao Palhinha and Wilson Odobert for Kevin Danso, the injured Lucas Bergvall and Randal Kolo Muani.

Last season's top scorer Brennan Johnson was not involved as he was undergoing his medical ahead of a £33.5milliom move to Crystal Palace after being told on New Year's Eve by Frank and sporting director Fabio Paratici that he was not part of the club's plans going forward, football.london understands.

Spurs could have done with some attacking inspiration in a desperately dull game that had the travelling fans singing 'boring, boring Tottenham' along with constant nostalgic chants for former players and managers.

Neither goalkeeper had much to do in either half other than Guglielmo Vicario having to push away a Vitaly Janelt header in the second period while Caoimhin Kelleher comfortably held a Richarlison effort in added time.

While Frank got a good reception from his old fans, the Tottenham supporters appeared to boo him as he walked over to applaud them at the final whistle.

Here are our Spurs player ratings:

Guglielmo Vicario

Making his 100th appearance for the club, his only real save of note came in the 63rd minute from Janelt's header. Dealt with set pieces and crosses well on the whole. 7

Pedro Porro

Defended solidly enough without impressing with his attacking play. 6

Cristian Romero

Had a running battle with Thiago and made a mess of a challenge on the run on the Brazilian before the hour mark but it was not punished. Got better and better in the final moments and made some big challenges to help keep the clean sheet. 7

Micky van de Ven

Made an acrobatic clearance in his own box 15 minutes in and was in top form throughout with plenty of sliding challenges. 8

Djed Spence

Made a mess of a duel with Kayode in the box and the Brentford man got the ball to Thiago who fired well over the bar from eight yards out. Had a couple of runs forward without much end product. 6

Rodrigo Bentancur

Battled away in the centre of the pitch and while some of his passing was sloppy, he was busy throughout. 7

Joao Palhinha

Back in the team and plenty of work to do but the pairing of him and Bentancur was never going to produce much going forward. 6

Mohammed Kudus

Other than one shot over the bar he kept running into clusters of Brentford players. 5

Archie Gray

Pushed into an advanced midfield role and he had a curling shot blocked in the Brentford box in the early moments. Had a header blocked in front of goal from Richarlison's volleyed cross around the half hour mark. Had a penalty shout before the hour mark after being sandwiched between two Brentford players. Had more goal threat than the actual attackers. 6

Wilson Odobert

After his bright cameo against tired Palace legs, this was back to one of his weaker displays. Offered an outlet occasionally but needs to be stronger. After one poor attempted clearance led to a Janelt chance, the Frenchman followed that up by getting outpaced by 35-year-old Jordan Henderson. 5

Richarlison

Set up Gray for a chance and had a late weak effort saved but otherwise had little service, with hopeful punts upfield he had to run towards. 5

Subs

Randal Kolo Muani

Tried to make things happen on both flanks without much fortune. 5

Brentford vs Tottenham LIVE: Odobert, Palhinha and Romero in for Spurs, Johnson signing for Palace - Football London
Description

Tottenham travel to Brentford to kick the new year off with a Premier League derby in familiar surroundings for Thomas Frank.

The 52-year-old spent nine years at Brentford, with seven of those as the head coach before making the move across London to Tottenham last summer. Now Frank returns to the Gtech Community Stadium with Spurs in 13th place in the Premier League and his old team ninth under Keith Andrews.

With just a point between the sides, a win for Frank's charges would see them leapfrog his former employers and build on the 1-0 win at Crystal Palace last weekend. The Dane has captain Cristian Romero back from suspension but remains without Xavi Simons, who is serving the second of his three game-ban for his red card against Liverpool.

Last season's top scorer Brennan Johnson is expected to be left out of the squad for the game at Brentford as Tottenham look to sell the 24-year-old to Crystal Palace for a fee of around £35million.

Here's the Tottenham Hotspur team that Thomas Frank has selected to face Brentford in the Premier League on New Year's Day

Thomas Frank has made three changes to his Tottenham team to face Brentford on New Year's Day.

Spurs are looking to build on their 1-0 win at Crystal Palace which arrived thanks to Archie Gray's header. Captain Cristian Romero is back after his one-game suspension, albeit with the threat of a future ban looming with his FA charge for failing to get off the pitch promptly following his late red card against Liverpool.

However, Tottenham remain without the suspended Xavi Simons as he serves the second of a three-game ban. Dominic Solanke has returned to working with the team in training, but remains out with Dejan Kulusevski, Destiny Udogie and James Maddison, while Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Lucas Bergvall was a doubt with an injury picked up at Selhurst Park and misses out. That means Joao Palhinha comes into the starting line-up alongside Rodrigo Bentancur with Gray playing in an advanced role as he did after Bergvall left the pitch on Sunday.

Brennan Johnson is not involved as he undergoes his medical ahead of a £33.5milliom move to Crystal Palace after being told by Frank and sporting director Fabio Paratici that he was not part of the club's plans going forward, football.london understands.

Kevin Danso earned the player of the match award for his battling display at Selhurst Park but makes way for the returning Romero while Randal Kolo Muani is replaced by Wilson Odobert. Youngster Callum Olusesi is among the substitutes on the bench.

The Wales international is set to depart across London to link up with Crystal Palace after being told he was not in Thomas Frank's plans

Brennan Johnson is set to seal his Tottenham exit to Crystal Palace after being told by Thomas Frank and sporting director Fabio Paratici that he was not part of the club's plans going forward, football.london understands.

The 24-year-old was Spurs' top scorer last season with 18 goals to his name and seven assists, with his biggest goal proving to be the one that won the north London club the Europa League final against Manchester United in May in Bilbao, ending a 17-year-old wait for a trophy and a 41-year absence of European silverware.

However, the arrival of Mohammed Kudus in the summer blocked Johnson's chances on the right-hand side and he has made just six Premier League starts under Frank, scoring four goals across all competitions from just 912 minutes of football.

With Spurs looking to bring in more attacking players in the January window, they agreed a fee of around £35million with Palace for the Wales international, with interest from a string of other clubs such as Bournemouth, Everton as well as Aston Villa and Newcastle, who both would have needed to move players on before making any move for him.

football.london understands Johnson was informed on New Year's Eve by both Frank and Paratici that he was surplus to requirements at the club. Paratici himself has been linked with exiting the club, with Serie A strugglers Fiorentina looking to take him back to Italy as their head of football.

Now with Johnson undergoing his medical with the Eagles, he looks set to seal his switch to Palace to play for Oliver Glasner, with the Austrian himself the subject of questions surrounding his long-term future at Selhurst Park.

Johnson arrived from Nottingham Forest in the summer of 2023 for £47.5million with his former employers reported at the time to have negotiated a 10 per cent sell-on clause in that deal.

Johnson and Tel exit, Savinho move - Tottenham January transfer window predicted - Football London
Description

Thomas Frank has suggested Tottenham will be active in the January transfer window and football.london's writers have had a go at predicting what business the club will do this month

The January transfer window is officially open and Tottenham could be extremely active over the next month or so.

Thomas Frank's side have been inconsistent in the first half of the 2025/26 campaign and a number of stars being absent due to injury has certainly not helped. The Dane has already suggested Spurs will look to strengthen the squad in the winter window, providing the right profile of player becomes available.

"Of course the window will open and we will be in the market and see if there's anything we can do," Frank said. "But it needs to be something where we think it can clearly improve the team, if not I'd rather want to wait. But we will be out there."

While Tottenham will look to add further quality to the playing squad, a number of stars could also look to exit Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, either permanently or on loan. With all that in mind, football.london's writers have a go at predicting exactly what Tottenham will do in the January transfer window...

Alasdair Gold

Spurs are looking for a left winger, another midfielder and a centre-back if one departs in the window, while Thomas Frank also wants another natural left-back, whether in this window or the next, to challenge the injury-prone Destiny Udogie and allow Djed Spence to battle with Pedro Porro on the right.

Tottenham are also looking to upgrade in any areas they possibly can next month which technically means a variety of players could head through the door if an opportunity opens for them to move.

Spurs want to sell Brennan Johnson, although that would make it the third year in a row in which the club have sold the top scorer from their previous season. Radu Dragusin will want regular football and the north London club will consider loaning and potentially selling the Romanian, who has just returned from his ACL injury and has interest from Serie A clubs.

Mathys Tel could also leave the club on loan, as could centre-back Kota Takai, as Frank looks to bolster his squad for the now while giving development opportunities to players for the future.

Ryan Taylor

I'm expecting Spurs to be highly active in January, not least because Thomas Frank has already said so himself. They definitely need at least one forward, possibly two and they also need to consider strengthening at left-back.

Destiny Udogie's fitness is an issue and Djed Spence has done a fine job filling in but I'd like to see a natural, left-footed full-back competing with Udogie and Spence pushing Pedro Porro on the right and I believe that could happen.

Tottenham need a left-winger and with Brennan Johnson likely to depart, they need to add more goals. He scored 18 last season and it's a mystery to me why he's not fancied by Frank, who tried to bring him to Brentford.

Savinho would be great but he plays on the right and that deal looks somewhat difficult but I do definitely expect Tottenham to bring in at least one attacker.

Further incomings might be subject to departures and there could be a few. Radu Dragusin has interest from Roma, Fiorentina and possibly Juventus, that would likely be a loan. A loan for Mathys Tel would also be beneficial if another winger comes in. I think Wilson Odobert will stay put following his exciting cameo against Crystal Palace, then there could also be a couple of loans for younger players, possible Kota Takai.

Description

Here's the Tottenham team we reckon Thomas Frank will select to face his old team Brentford in the Premier League on New Year's Day

Tottenham will be looking for another positive derby result on the road at Brentford on New Year's Day.

Spurs took home a 1-0 win from Crystal Palace thanks to Archie Gray's header. However, recent victories under Thomas Frank have been followed up with poor performances so the Dane will be hoping his team take a proper step forward this time as they visit his former home, the Gtech Community Stadium.

Tottenham are without the suspended Xavi Simons as he serves the second of a three-game ban. The injured Dominic Solanke has returned to working with the team in training, but remains out with Dejan Kulusevski, Destiny Udogie and James Maddison, while Pape Matar Sarr and Yves Bissouma are away at the Africa Cup of Nations.

Frank admitted that Lucas Bergvall is a doubt with an injury picked up at Selhurst Park, although he was positive the teenage Swede will be available. The Spurs boss might still be cautious with the midfielder and with the lack of numbers that could mean Joao Palhinha coming into the starting line-up alongside Rodrigo Bentancur and Gray playing in an advanced role as he did after Bergvall left the pitch on Sunday.

Spurs are looking to sell Brennan Johnson this month with Crystal Palace having had a bid of around £35million accepted. If the Wales international is not in the squad on Thursday then it's because Tottenham and Frank are looking to edge last season's top scorer towards the exit door, with Palace desperate to convince him to join them.

In defence, Cristian Romero is back after his one-game suspension, albeit with the threat of a future ban looming with his FA charge for failing to get off the pitch promptly following his late red card against Liverpool. Micky van de Ven will need his own rest at some point before that potential absence for his captain and Frank will have to decide whether it comes at Brentford or in a few days' tme on Sunday at home against Sunderland.

Kevin Danso earned the player of the match award for his battling display at Selhurst Park and Frank will have no hesitation in naming him again. Up top, the Tottenham head coach must decide whether to stick with the same front three of Randal Kolo Muani, Richarlison and Mohammed Kudus or bring in Wilson Odobert or Mathys Tel.

Here's the Spurs team we reckon Frank might select:

Thomas Frank explains what happened when he bumped into a Tottenham fan at lunch in London

Thomas Frank explains what happened when he bumped into a Tottenham fan at lunch in London - Football London
Description

The Tottenham boss bumped into supporters from his current and former clubs ahead of the New Year's Day game at the Gtech Community Stadium

While enjoying lunch in London with his family, fate threw Tottenham boss Thomas Frank into the path of a rather apt couple ahead of the Dane's past and present clash on New Year's Day.

This afternoon Frank will make the short trip across the capital back to Brentford, where he spent almost nine years of his coaching career, seven of those as the Bees' head coach. Thursday's game brings the 52-year-old back to the Gtech Community Stadium with his Tottenham side and plenty to prove to his new fanbase while thanking the old one.

A win to kick off 2026 would lift 13th-placed Spurs above his old side, who sit ninth in the Premier League table, and begin to win over a section of the north London club's fanbase that holds doubts over the start to his tenure and the standard of football.

However, on Monday afternoon, while out for a meal with the rest of the Franks in Covent Garden, the Tottenham boss had a positive experience as he ran into two supporters who will sit on either side of Thursday's divide.

"I was in London yesterday and met a couple. One was a Brentford fan and the other, she was a Tottenham fan," said the Spurs boss. "The Brentford fan was very positive and said thank you for everything I had done at the club. I said, ‘You’re welcome, it’s not only about me, it’s everyone doing things together’.

"The Tottenham supporter said 'keep doing what you’re doing, you’re doing a top job, I love what you’re doing'. That was positive.

"I guess the ones who are not that positive are probably not brave enough to say it to my face. It's probably a little bit easier behind the keyboard, but the messages that I have are genuinely positive."

Frank is looking forward to stepping back inside a club where he achieved so much in taking them into the Premier League and building a side that consistently beat the big boys.

"There were many magical moments it was a privilege to be part of with fantastic people," said the Dane. "Of course the promotion is the stand-out achievement. Getting promoted to the best league in the world, for the first time in 74 years or something like that, that’s very unique.

"That is pure happiness in one day., So that’s special. It was also pretty nice to beat Arsenal 2-0 in the first game in the Premier League."

One day when he retires, Frank is planning to build a room of memories of his long spell at Brentford and what he hopes will be a similar time in north London.

"There are a lot of memories from those days, pictures and bits and pieces that one day, when I'm not in football anymore, I will create that special room in my home of the seven years I spent in Brentford and everything I achieved there, and then the seven years in Tottenham with everything I achieve here. That I'm looking forward to," he said.

Spurs will go into their first match of 2026 at Brentford without the suspended Xavi Simons but with captain Cristian Romero back from his own one-game ban. The Argentine is awaiting the result of an FA charge for not leaving the field in a prompt fashion following his red card against Liverpool.

Frank described Lucas Bergvall as a small doubt for the game at the Gtech Community Stadium but he has seen Dominic Solanke take his first steps back into training with the team this week following a long-term ankle problem which has kept the England international out of action since August.

Frank's final season at Brentford saw him having to operate without new signing Igor Thiago for all but eight matches after the striker struggled with a knee problem throughout the campaign. The Tottenham boss admitted that dealing without a striker who has now scored 12 goals in 19 matches this season for Brentford prepared him for life without Solanke at Spurs.

"Yeah, you could say that. I also think Yoane Wissa did well before that. The year before he did very well and then he continued playing," he said. "So even for the games when Igor Thiago was available, Wissa played because he was on fire. He ended up scoring 19 non-penalty goals. It’s an incredible achievement.

“What I knew was that I was convinced Igor would be a goalscorer for Brentford. I’m convinced by the way he is a personality, his mindset, but also his abilities and he’s proven that. I think Keith and the coaching staff have done a top job to make him perform in every aspect.

"It’s a little bit similar here. You could say Richy now has played more or less a lot of minutes and done well. He was this far away from scoring two goals against Crystal Palace, but on the flip side I’m also convinced that Solanke will score a lot of goals for us when he comes back."

Frank called the victory at Selhurst Park on Sunday a "beautiful ugly win" and he acknowledged that such matches are going to be key at times.

"I think it's so important. I think every good team needs to be able to do that and we are building something. I think it's also fair to say we are not where City or Arsenal, Chelsea or Liverpool are right now unfortunately. We really want to be there, but even them, they need ugly wins sometimes where they're winning 1-0," he said.

"How many times have Arsenal won 1-0 with a set-piece this season? So, we need to be able to do that, and I know it will be a very difficult team at Brentford. I am part of creating what I know I am facing. I know it will be very difficult at the Gtech. They have won six games, drawn two and lost one. They lost 1-0 to City.

"They have beaten Liverpool there, Newcastle, there, Man United there, recently 4-1 Bournemouth, so that is wow and if you don’t show respect to that, the three points are going, but we will be very respectful. We know what we are facing. We need to be extremely competitive and I know we will be."

Spurs top the Premier League's away form table but in 2026 Frank knows he must fix Tottenham's home struggles and show more of the club's motto in doing so.

"Let's start with the positive first. To be competitive away from home is a big part of a successful team. You need to be able to be competitive and get enough points on the road and that’s where we’ve shown a lot of resilience and character, defensive clean-sheet mentality, set pieces being good," he said.

"Then we know, at home, you need to dominate more. We need to do it, to dare is to do. We need to add even more layers, and that, I'm not in doubt of, will come, because one thing for sure, all the teams I’ve had scored a lot of goals and I create one top scorer after another, year in, year out. That will also happen here. We just need some of the guys that are natural top scorers to be fit and available."

So will Spurs fans have to shelve their hopes of 'to dare is to do' football until Frank's team is truly up and running?

"No, I don't think so, because it's not like it's from zero to 100. There's still, let's say, elements where we have shown very good offensive football, but it's just not been as consistent as where we want it to be," said the Dane. "And also a little bit understanding of where we are at the moment. We are, I will keep repeating it, on a journey where we need to improve a lot of stuff.

"Where we finished 17th last year, played Europa League and won it, fantastic. Now we're playing Champions League - a step up - and we are trying to compete in the league with quite a few of the key players out. That's the fact.

"But the fact is also we need to win, and we need to play, we need to do everything we can to win with what we have available right now, but constantly improve the team to make sure we play better offensively."
