Tottenham player ratings vs Bayern - Romero, Van de Ven, Spence, Palhinha and Johnson struggle in rout - Football London
Description

Tottenham lost 4-0 at Bayern Munich in their final pre-season match of the summer on Thursday and here are our player ratings from the match in Germany.

Bayern's two newly-announced Ballon d'Or nominees Harry Kane and Michael Olise combined for the first half's only goal as Kane opened the scoring just 11 minutes in, taking down a ball over the top from Olise and firing home inside the left-hand post amid suggestions that the England captain was a yard offside.

The former Spurs man slipped and sent a penalty over the crossbar minutes later after Josip Stanisic went down in the box under little to no contact from Tottenham's new signing and technically a Bayern player in Joao Palhinha making his debut.

Bayern had further chances either side of the break and they scored a second before the hour mark. Djed Spence lost the ball down the right and Konrad Laimer played in Kingsley Coman who cut inside and curled a shot past Guglielmo Vicario.

A third goal for the by then much-changed home side came when 17-year-old substitute Lennart Karl curled home a first-time effort. Then an 18-year-old, Jonah Kusi-Asare curled in another spectacular goal from out wide to complete the rout.

Here are our Spurs player ratings:

Guglielmo Vicario

Couldn't do much about Kane's clinical strike, amid suggestions the striker was offside. Did save low down from Goretzka. Saved bravely at the feet of Diaz late in the half. Made a good second half save early on from Olise before an even better one to deny Kane in front of goal. Couldn't do much about Coman, Karl and Kusi-Asare's spectacular finishes. 7

Pedro Porro

Did well with a number of last gasp interceptions in the Spurs box but was constantly kept busy by the Bayern attack. Picked out Richarlison with a good second half cross but was part of the defence that struggled with the onslaught from both senior and junior Bayern sides. 5

Cristian Romero

Wiped out Kane with one challenge and then got the ball well before Olise with another crunching tackle. Picked up a booking for pulling back Kane late in the half. Wiped out Kane again in the second half on the edge of the box. Always looked a half-step behind the game. 4

Micky van de Ven

Made some good challenges and one run up the pitch but was caught ball watching a few times. Looked bewildered at times by the speed of Bayern's attacks. 4

Djed Spence

Brought down in the Bayern box but nothing given. Had to contend with Coman and Olise at times and it was understandably a lot to deal with. Gave away the ball in the build-up to Bayern's second goal with some loose play. 4

Joao Palhinha

Appeared to be harshly adjudged to have brought down Stanisic for the penalty Kane missed. Probably not the best game to judge him on after so little game time over recent months and he sometimes looked off the pace. Came off at the break. 4

Rodrigo Bentancur

One player who wasn't panicking under Bayern pressure. Found Richarlison for a chance on 34 minutes with a quick through ball. Spurs' best player in the first half but could only watch on as Bayern swept past the visitors time and time again in the second period. 6

Mohammed Kudus

Some promising moments without particularly threatening down the right. Spurs' only real outlet for much of the game and had to do too much on his own. 5

Pape Matar Sarr

A couple of nice touches and turns but spent most of the first half having to defend. Switched to a deeper role after the break and didn't offer much. 4

Brennan Johnson

Started on the left, made one very good sliding tackle and mostly was having to get back to help Spence when he could. Didn't pass his audition to fill the Son-shaped hole on the left as he had little attacking threat at all. 4

Richarlison

Got into the game more as the half wore on and one nice touch gave him space from Bentancur's pass but Neuer saved his low curling shot. Had another nice late run that he took too many touches with in the first half. Sent a header wide from Porro's cross before coming off after the break. 5

Subs

Lucas Bergvall

Tried to offer something as the number 10 in the second half but it's glaring that Spurs need someone who is experienced in that role. 5

Wilson Odobert

A couple of good runs but with nothing on the end of it from the left. 5

Ben Davies

Run ragged by Bayern's youngsters in the second half. 4

Mathys Tel

Tried to impress in front of his old club and fan and was reasonably bright, sending a late shot at Neuer. 6

Archie Gray

Came on and offered at least something with his movement and touches. N/A

Tottenham first half player ratings vs Bayern - Cristian Romero furious after Harry Kane goal - Football London
Description

Tottenham took on Bayern Munich in their final pre-season match of the summer on Thursday and here are our first half player ratings.

Bayern boasted two just announced Ballon d'Or nominees in Spurs' record goalscorer Harry Kane and former Crystal Palace man Michael Olise. Tottenham featured new signing in Bayern midfielder Joao Palhinha, who had joined on loan from the Bavarian giants with an option to buy. The 30-year-old Portuguese got his work permit in order to play against his current employers.

Kane opened the scoring just 11 minutes in, taking down a ball over the top from Olise and firing home inside the left-hand post amid suggestions that the England captain was offside. The former Spurs man slipped and sent a penalty over the crossbar minutes later after Josip Stanisic went down in the box.

Bayern had further chances without getting the ball on target before Richarlison had an effort saved at the other end. Romero left the pitch complaining in an animated fashion to the officials about some of their key decisions.

Here are our first half Tottenham player ratings:

Guglielmo Vicario

Couldn't do much about Kane's finish, amid suggestions the striker was offside. Did save low down from Goretzka. Saved bravely at the feet of Diaz late in the half. 6

Tottenham have perfect James Maddison replacement available in cut

Tottenham have perfect James Maddison replacement available in cut-price £24.5m transfer - Football London
Description

Tottenham's need to sign at least one, if not two, attacking midfielders has increased now the club have confirmed that James Maddison has torn his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL).

Maddison, 28, had to be stretchered off after going down in an off the ball incident during Spurs' pre-season fixture against Newcastle United on Sunday. Thomas Frank delivered a concerning update in a post-match interview, admitting he is worried that the midfielder has suffered a "bad injury".

Frank's worst fears have since come true, with Spurs announcing on Thursday morning that Maddison is set to undergo surgery for a ruptured ACL in his right knee - the same one he injured at the end of last season.

While losing Maddison is no doubt a major blow for Tottenham and Frank, the club cannot rest on their laurels and have got to act fast to bring in a replacement before the end of the summer.

Even before Maddison's latest setback, Spurs wanted to sign Morgan Gibbs-White and activated his £60million Nottingham Forest release clause before he opted to remain in the East Midlands.

Indeed, with Maddison joining Dejan Kulusevski out injured, there is a distinct chance that Tottenham sign two attacking midfielders in the remaining three-and-a-half weeks of the transfer window.

Spurs have got to sign one cost-effective option and another blockbuster addition, following the £55m arrival of Mohammed Kudus from West Ham last month.

Looking at a direct replacement for Maddison, first, Leicester City's Bilal El Khannouss would be the perfect addition to Frank's squad. Although some Tottenham fans have shut down the prospect of the Morocco international moving to north London, he would be an excellent signing.

El Khannouss, 21, may have scored just three times and added six assists in 36 appearances for Leicester following his £21m move from Genk last summer, but that doesn't tell the full story.

For a team that often didn't have much of the ball, El Khannouss managed to create 42 chances in the Premier League season, working out to around 1.7 per-90. That is, indeed, more than Maddison (41), West Ham's Lucas Paqueta (36), Chelsea's Joao Pedro (30) and several other attacking midfielders.

El Khannouss' creative numbers for last season is about on par with Manchester City's Phil Foden and Gibbs-White, though both of them managed to end up with more direct goal contributions.

Granted, El Khannouss was part of a dire Leicester side, who at one point went nine straight home Premier League matches without scoring a single goal. So, if he was playing with better players, could he have had conjured-up more in terms of goals and assists? That is a no brainer.

Also, Tottenham fans have seen the potential El Khannouss has in the flesh. Indeed, the former Genk man was outstanding at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium back in January, as he scored during Leicester's shock 2-1 win.

With El Khannouss said to have a £24.5m relegation clause in his Leicester contract, it's a deal that Tottenham should be wrapping up. For that price, Spurs won't be able to get much better.

At just 21, El Khannouss has a season of experience in the Premier League under his belt and has so much talent and potential at his disposal. He would strengthen Tottenham's squad straight from the bat.

On the ball, El Khannouss is fantastic. He often operates in the No.10 role but can drift out to the left-hand side to pick up the ball and make things happen. A terrific ball-carrier, El Khannouss' best asset is his eye for a defence-splitting pass and ability to pick out a man when not many expect him to.

While he isn't the strongest from a defensive point of view and must improve his physical aspect to make it right to the top, he has the work-rate to achieve it, that's for sure.

He would be the cost-effective option for Tottenham in the attacking midfield area, with Eberechi Eze of Crystal Palace coming in as the more expensive signing. The 27-year-old doesn't need much introduction to the Spurs faithful following his performances for Palace over recent years.

Eze scored 14 times and provided 11 assists in 43 appearances for Palace last season, helping the club win the FA Cup in the process. He is a full England international and is one of the best attacking midfielders in the Premier League.

The ex-Queens Park Rangers man has a £68m release clause in his contract, and while that might feel a sizeable amount, Spurs should trigger it and bring Eze, alongside El Khannous to the club.

Thomas Frank has named a strong side to face Bayern Munich in Tottenham's final pre-season match before they participate in the UEFA Super Cup.

Spurs arrived back from their tour of Asia, with a 1-0 win against Arsenal in Hong Kong and a 1-1 draw with Newcastle in Seoul, on Monday and just two days later they travel to Germany to take on club record goalscorer Harry Kane and his Bayern team-mates, which include new signing from Liverpool Luis Diaz.

Tottenham have their own new signing in current Bayern player Joao Palhinha, who has joined on loan from the Bavarian giants with an option to buy. The 30-year-old Portuguese has got his work permit in order so can play against his current employers and he starts against his old side.

Spurs will be without one familiar face though following Son Heung-min's transfer to LAFC for more than £20million, an MLS record transfer. Frank will also be without James Maddison for much of the season after the midfielder ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee late on against Newcastle in Seoul on Sunday and will require surgery.

Destiny Udogie remains out with a knee injury while Dominic Solanke is still out with his ankle injury.

Brennan Johnson and Mohammed Kudus are either side of Pape Matar Sarr, all behind Richarlison, while Palhinha starts alongside Rodrigo Bentancur.

Here is the Tottenham team that Frank has selected:

Dele Alli sends nine-word Son Heung-min message as Tottenham legend completes transfer - Football London
Description

Dele Alli has described Son Heung-min as his 'brother for life' and a 'legend' after Tottenham Hotspur confirmed the forward's departure.

Son leaves for Los Angeles FC a decade after joining Spurs in the summer of 2015. Dele joined the club mere months before and spent the next six-and-a-half seasons as his teammate.

They played over 200 times together, with only Ben Davies, Eric Dier, Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris - the latter of whom he joins at LAFC - managing more appearances alongside Son. Of those, the forward only combined for more goals with Kane (58) than Dele (21).

"My brother for life," Dele captioned a photo posted on social media of himself and Son celebrating together by both doing the 'camera' celebration. That picture is from the second Premier League match of the 2021/22 season, when Dele scored their only goal in a 1-0 win away to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

A second Instagram story post adds: "You have left a legend". That accompanies an image of them celebrating by tapping the Tottenham badge on their chests after Dele put Spurs two-up against Arsenal in their Carabao Cup quarter-final at Emirates Stadium during the 2018/19 season.

He also shared a photo of the pair embracing during one of their last games as teammates, a 2-2 draw with Liverpool in December 2021 that took place six weeks before Dele signed for Everton. After that move, they almost played against each other once, but Son was substituted off two minutes before Dele came on, with Spurs by then leading 5-0

year transfer mission and ruin PSG plans before UEFA Super Cup

Tottenham can complete three-year transfer mission and ruin PSG plans before UEFA Super Cup - Football London
Description

Thomas Frank is keen to sign another centre-back at Tottenham, as revealed by football.london earlier this week.

The new Tottenham boss wants at least two more signings at Spurs before the summer transfer window closes, with a No.10 on the priority list as well as a defender.

Spurs are light in the 10 position, given Dejan Kulusevski is not fit enough to start the season following a knee injury at the end of last season and the news on Thursday that James Maddison had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament in the pre-season friendly with Newcastle United.

Tottenham did try to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest but after a protracted saga, the 25-year-old put pen to paper on a new deal at the City Ground.

Spurs do seem more stacked in the centre-back department, but last season, with the north London club having 60 games to play, Cristian Romero was only available to play in 26 of them and Micky van de Ven just 22, while Radu Dragusin remains sidelined.

A number of defenders have been linked with a move to N17 this summer and in previous years, with Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi chief among them.

But Spurs could make a move for someone who was linked with a move to north London three years ago - although he will cost a huge amount more now than back then.

Back in 2022 under Antonio Conte, Spurs were interested in Illia Zabarnyi, with the then 19-year-old impressing for Dynamo Kyiv. Spurs watched the teenager a number of times and weighed up a summer move, but did not pull the trigger.

Zabarnyi would go on to sign for Bournemouth in January 2023, with the Cherries paying just under £20million for him.

With Spurs in the market for a centre-back again, Zabarnyi's name has cropped up, with Paris Saint-Germain struggling to complete a £54.6million deal for the now 21-year-old.

Reports in L'Equipe suggest Spurs could hijack the deal and finally complete a three-year transfer mission. PSG had looked odds-on to seal the deal and may still do so, but with the two teams due to meet in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday night, it will be interesting to see if Zabarnyi is in either of the two squads for the clash between the Champions League winners and the Europa League winners.

If Spurs can get one over on PSG before kick-off, it will give them a psychological advantage heading into the contest.

I could have stayed at Tottenham but I had to leave

I could have stayed at Tottenham but I had to leave - I needed to play in the biggest games - Football London
Description

Harry Kane and Son Heung-min's reasons for leaving Tottenham could not be more different with the legendary attacking duo now having both departed north London.

Last Saturday, the Spurs captain announced his decision to seek a move elsewhere with a switch to MLS side LAFC confirmed the following week.

"Before we start, I just want to share the information that I have decided to leave this club this summer," he said at a press conference. "Respectfully, this club is helping me to make my decision. I just want to share this before we start.

Asked specifically about his decision to depart now, Son replied: "It was the most difficult decision I have made in my career. I have spent 10 years at Tottenham. The main reason is I have achieved everything I can at Tottenham.

"I need a new environment for a fresh challenge. I’m grateful the club have respected my decision and wish Spurs well for the next season."

Having finally won a trophy at Tottenham, it is no surprise that Son felt as though it was the right time to move on. Kane saw things very differently however, as he reflected on the decision to depart Spurs immediately after winning his first trophy.

“It was a big decision,” Kane told The Guardian in an interview following Bayern Munich being crowned Bundesliga champions. “I could have easily stayed at Spurs, played in the Premier League and carried on scoring goals, but I wanted to push myself.

"I wanted to see how good I could be and play in the biggest games, the biggest title run-ins and Champions League games. I’ve done that. Though we’ve not been successful in the other competitions we’ve played in big games and big nights. And I think that tonight is just the start of something special.”

“I’m no different to what I was before I had won. It was something that was missing from my résumé. Maybe once you’ve won your first one there’s a little less to talk about and throw my way, but again it comes with it.”

Kane certainly makes some valid points but there were many occasions he played in important games for Spurs and finals but failed to make an impact. Son meanwhile, did not shy away from the big occasion and was finally able to win silverware and leave Tottenham on a high.

Despite that, Kane sealing a sensational return to Spurs as early as next year is entirely possible with The Telegraph claiming he could seek a return back to the Premier League after the World Cup.

brainer to revolutionise Thomas Frank's team after latest setback

Tottenham have transfer no-brainer to revolutionise Thomas Frank's team after latest setback - Football London
Description

Johan Lange has plenty of work to do in the transfer market for Thomas Frank as the new Premier League season edges ever closer. We are now just over two weeks away from Tottenham opening their 2025/26 league campaign with a home encounter against Burnley.

Prior to that, Spurs will be looking to win another piece of silverware as they take on Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup final next Wednesday after winning the Europa League back in May. Spurs have been active in the transfer market so far this summer, with Joao Palhinha the latest player to sign on the dotted line after joining on loan from Bayern Munich.

At a time when Premier League rivals are splashing the cash and bringing in a number of players, Tottenham really have to do likewise as they look to kick on after finishing 17th last season. The north London club are targeting a new senior centre-back and a No.10 in what remains of the window.

Spurs were already short in the No.10 role before James Maddison picked up a nasty knee injury in last Sunday's friendly against Newcastle United. Morgan Gibbs-White looked like he would come in and enhance Tottenham's options in that area of the pitch until his move from Nottingham Forest fell apart despite the Lilywhites activating his release clause.

Spurs do have Dejan Kulusevski who can play in the role but it is not clear yet when he will return from the knee injury that he sustained in May. There is one standout candidate when it comes to a new No.10 and Tottenham supporters are desperate for the club to launch a move for Crystal Palace ace Eberechi Eze.

The England international has a £67.5million release clause in his Palace contract and the Eagles are believed to want in the region of £35million up front for their main man. Although Tottenham would have to stump up a lot of money up front to acquire Eze, his total fee is not too dissimilar to the £60million clause in Gibbs-White's previous Nottingham Forest deal.

Signing Eze could be a gamechanger for Tottenham and he does also have experience of playing from the left wing following Son Heung-min's emotional Spurs exit. On the latest episode of the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, Spurs reporters Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest spoke about the need for a new No.10 and why Eze should be the man the club go all out for.
