Igor Tudor urges his Tottenham players to show they are ‘soldiers’ – and opens up on Spurs’ issues - OneFootball
Description

Igor Tudor has delivered a frank assessment on the problems his Tottenham Hotspur side are facing.

Tudor has taken over at Spurs, who are only four points above the relegation zone, until the end of the season.

His first game in charge was a heavy north London derby defeat to Arsenal last week, but Tudor has told his players to quickly move on from the loss.

“After the first game, as I said, if you’re playing against the best team in the world at this moment, for us, I need to be honest, it’s not a realistic game to show that we are soldiers or not we are soldiers,” he said.

“So that is true. But they show they can be in part of the game, in some parts of the game, you know. Long term, long game, the problems we have in defence especially, you know, it’s not easy against them. So let’s see the next games.

Asked who he thinks his “soldiers” are, Tudor replied: “I will tell you when the season is finished.”

Tudor also reiterated that the physical condition of his players needs to be improved.

“I believe that physically we are not in an amazing situation, amazing moment,” he said.

“There were a lot of games they played (in the) last period without too many players available.

“So I believe the physical condition of the team dropped down. So we need to use this period where we don’t play the games to put some petrol in the engine. To start to work better.”

On whether fatigue is a problem given the injury situation, Tudor explained: “Yes, fatigue. To do the pressing up high, you need to be all fit.

“Because if you go and someone is not in the right shape, there are problems because someone is coming late also.

“And also second thing is there is also other another goal to protect. It’s easy to run there but you need to run back. So if you run up and don’t run back, it’s a problem.

“So for sure we will come up, we will do better things with the time, in this way.

“But in this moment, it’s a big question, what we can do and what we cannot do.”

Tudor also admits there are some mental obstacles his side must overcome, and challenged his available players to step up.

“There is some pressure here in this club of course,” he said.

“Some players are still young, very young. They are brought here to help and now maybe they are in a moment where they need to resolve the problems.

“So if you have maybe too many players because of the amount of injured players in this moment, who are together in the squad, that creates some problems.

“But it’s also an opportunity, a challenge to grow fast. To grow fast, to become a man, as your colleague said, fast. ‘Come on, I’m the guy. Give me the ball, I will resolve’. Instead of ‘how I can do it? I’m just here’.

“So that’s the challenge of each of them, to see why not. ‘I will be the guy. Give me the ball. I will not hide. I will take the ball. I will defend my box.’

“It’s always how you see the situation. You can always see it in both ways. Or ‘I’m just here, there was 15 players here, now we have 10 players out, so I play’.

“How you see the situation. If you are the right guy, then you will see it as a positive, as an opportunity.”

Yann Sommer is leaving Inter Milan when his contract expires this summer, and Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario is the frontrunner to take his place, but the deal will not come cheap, and the Nerazzurri face a significant decision about how to fund it.

According to La Repubblica, via FCInter1908, Inter stand at a “technical and administrative crossroads.”

They can either extend the existing setup or invest in a goalkeeper for the medium term.

Vicario, at 29, represents the second option.

He combines age, top-level experience and an already proven trajectory, from Serie A, to the Premier League, to immediate impact.

Spurs Negotiate From Position Of Strength As Inter Chase Vicario For After Sommer

“He is not a reclamation project,” La Repubblica note, adding that Tottenham want around €30 million and hold no urgency to sell.

That is the central challenge.

Spurs are negotiating from a position of strength.

They will not accept creative deal structures or diluted fees.

Inter must decide whether the goalkeeper position is a genuine priority, because if it is, other areas of spending may need to be scaled back to make the numbers work.

Competition for Vicario’s signature adds further pressure.

An Italian goalkeeper of his calibre, ready to win immediately, naturally attracts multiple suitors.

If a bidding war develops, Spurs’ leverage only grows.

Inter must move decisively or risk losing their top target entirely.

“Vicario is not a suggestion,” Repubblica conclude. “He is a file that forces a concrete choice.”

Alan Brazil says Tottenham Hotspur have not spoken with Mauricio Pochettino over becoming next manager - OneFootball
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have yet to speak with Mauricio Pochettino over appointing him as their next permanent manager, according to talkSPORT presenter Alan Brazil.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club reportedly were open to appointing a temporary boss until someone like Pochettino is available in the summer.

Spurs have since given Igor Tudor the job until the end of the season, but the North London club are not in contact with the Argentine, claims Brazil.

Pochettino will be available to return to club football after the World Cup in June, but it appears Tottenham want to wait until the end of the season before making any decision.

They are not guaranteed safety right now and will need to hold on to their Premier League status to have a chance of bringing their former manager back.

The Lilywhites are 16th in the league table ahead of the remaining 11 games of the campaign, and failure to quickly turn their fortunes on the pitch around could be hugely disastrous.

Tudor wants the permanent job but he needs to keep Spurs up to boost his chances.

Pochettino remains a target for Tottenham despite not holding talks with him yet, but there are no guarantees he has what it takes to turn them into domestic heavyweights again given various underlying problems at the club.

Spurs could do with new owners going forward if they really want to start competing with the bigwigs in the Premier League again.

Ange Postecoglou and Thomas Frank could not find answers to problems which started to unravel towards the end of Pochettino’s first reign, and Tudor could also end up struggling despite his best efforts.

Tottenham Wage Structure Set for Overhaul Amid Relegation Fight

Tottenham Hotspur are contemplating a fundamental shift in financial philosophy, with The Guardian reporting that the club’s owners are prepared to rip up their long standing wage structure if Premier League survival is secured.

For years, Spurs cultivated an identity rooted in prudence. Under Daniel Levy, parsimony was not merely policy, it was principle. That approach delivered a £1bn stadium and relative balance sheet stability. It also delivered, at times, a squad that looked one injury away from exposure.

Now, with Tottenham 16th in the table and four points above the bottom three, the arithmetic feels starker. Investment in infrastructure once felt visionary. Investment in salaries now feels urgent.

Wage Bill Reality Among Big Six

The numbers illuminate the scale of recalibration required. Tottenham’s wage bill for 2023-24 stood at £222m, the lowest among the so called “big six” clubs. By comparison, Manchester City spent £413m over the same period. Even allowing for recent arrivals such as Xavi Simons, Mohammed Kudus and Conor Gallagher, the gap is instructive.

Wages accounted for 42 percent of revenue last season, a figure that would be admired in corporate boardrooms but looks anaemic in footballing terms. A source close to the owners told The Guardian that the Lewis family recognise finishing positions in the league correlate more closely to wages than to transfer spending.

This is not ideology, it is data.

Gallagher Deal Signals Change

The £35m signing of Gallagher from Atlético Madrid on around £200,000 per week has been described internally as a turning point. He is now the club’s highest paid player, a symbolic rupture with an era that often capped ambition at a financial ceiling.

Tottenham’s chief executive, Vinai Venkatesham, hinted recently that purse strings could loosen. Context explains why. An injury crisis has stripped depth from the squad. Results have frayed confidence. A short term appointment of Igor Tudor until the end of the season suggests triage rather than transformation.

Beyond that, names circulate. Mauricio Pochettino, more than six years after his departure, is reportedly the favourite. Roberto De Zerbi is also under consideration. What matters is less the identity than the backing. Any incoming manager will demand alignment between rhetoric and resources.

Should Spurs avoid relegation, this summer may represent more than a recruitment drive. It could be a philosophical correction, an admission that modern football punishes thrift when it shades into restraint.

The stadium is built. The balance sheet stabilised. The next step requires courage of a different kind.

Our View – EPL Index Analysis

For Spurs supporters, this report will land with equal parts relief and scepticism. Relief, because fans have long argued that the wage structure has held the team back. Competing with clubs spending nearly double on salaries was always going to narrow margins for error.

Scepticism, because promises of change have surfaced before. Supporters remember near misses in title races and Champions League runs that were not reinforced with decisive investment. If Gallagher truly marks a shift, then it must be followed by others of similar stature.

The link between wages and league position is hardly revolutionary. Fans have watched rivals flex financial muscle while Spurs sought efficiency. Efficiency is admirable, but it rarely lifts trophies on its own.

Avoiding relegation is the immediate priority. Beyond that, supporters will demand proof that this is not simply a reaction to crisis but a recalibrated vision. If the owners are serious about matching ambition with expenditure, the coming window will define whether Tottenham are resetting their trajectory or merely adjusting the narrative.

Tottenham Hotspur lose long-standing commercial partner | OneFootball

Tottenham Hotspur lose long-standing commercial partner - OneFootball
Description

One of Tottenham Hotspur’s long-standing commercial partners has decided to end its association with the North London club, according to the Telegraph.

The Tottenham Hotspur Stadium club have been informed by the unnamed key sponsor that their partnership will end at the end of the season.

Spurs will be losing millions as a result and they could be dealt more blows as other sponsors and commercial partners are deliberating whether or not to follow suit.

Tottenham have found themselves in a relegation battle after a woeful Premier League campaign and could be in more trouble if they lose to Arsenal in the North London derby on Sunday.

They finished 17th in the league table last term and are currently 16th after 26 games, five points above the relegation zone.

Sponsors are afraid Spurs could be battling relegation again next season even if they escape the drop this term.

Tottenham fans are angry at the performances of their club and some of them have not been going to the stadium to watch games.

It has left some of their commercial partners thinking, and more could decide to pull out of deals as they do not want to associate with a club whose supporters dislike.

Some of the contracts Spurs signed with these sponsors include lucrative bonuses based on European qualification, while some have relegation renegotiation and termination clauses.

The Lilywhites brought in Igor Tudor to replace Thomas Frank and will hope the Croatian can help immediately improve their fortunes on the pitch in the Premier League.

Tottenham have found themselves out of the big-six in England in recent months and will need to improve significantly over the coming months to retain some of their key commercial partners.

Tottenham Hotspur sack Thomas Frank | OneFootball

Tottenham Hotspur sack Thomas Frank - OneFootball
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have sacked head coach Thomas Frank after less than eight months in charge, with the club 16th in the Premier League and only five points above the relegation zone, Sky Sports has reported.

Frank’s dismissal follows Tuesday’s 2-1 home defeat by Newcastle, a result that prompted boos from sections of the Spurs support and chants calling for change. The Dane leaves having won just 13 of his 38 matches in charge, recording the lowest Premier League win percentage of any Tottenham manager in the competition’s history at 26.9%.

Appointed in June as Ange Postecoglou’s successor, despite the Australian delivering Europa League success last season, Frank was tasked with rebuilding a side in transition. However, two league wins in 17 games proved decisive.

In a statement, Spurs said results and performances had led the board to conclude that “a change at this point in the season is necessary”, while thanking Frank for his “unwavering commitment”.

His departure means Tottenham will seek a sixth permanent manager in seven years since Mauricio Pochettino’s exit in 2019. An interim appointment until the end of the season appears likely.

Frank’s successor inherits a side out of the domestic cups but still competing in the Champions League knockout stages, with a north London derby against Arsenal looming later this month.
