Following Paris Saint-Germain’s historic Champions League triumph on Saturday, the two teams competing for this season’s UEFA Super Cup have now been confirmed.

Luis Enrique’s record-breakers will meet Tottenham Hotspur after Ange Postecoglou kept his promise of second-season silverware as Spurs lifted the Europa League in Bilbao with victory over Manchester United.

PSG dismantled Inter Milan in Munich, running out 5-0 victors – the biggest final winning margin in the history of the competition – courtesy of a star-turn from Desire Doue, who bagged a brace, as well as goals from Achraf Hakimi, Kvicha Kvaratskhelia and substitute Senny Mayulu.

Spurs booked their place in the Super Cup after Brennan Johnson’s scrappy goal secured a narrow 1-0 win over United to end a 17-year wait for a major trophy.

Here’s everything you need to know about the 2025 UEFA Super Cup.

What is the UEFA Super Cup?

The UEFA Super Cup is a one-off game that marks the official beginning of the European football season by pitting the previous season’s Champions League winners against the Europa League champions.

The brainchild of Dutch reporter and newspaper editor, Anton Witkamp, the competition officially began in 1973, under its original name, the Super Competition – and later the European Super Cup – before being renamed the UEFA Super Cup in 1995.

The 1972 final between Ajax and Rangers is considered unofficial by UEFA due to the fact the Scottish club were banned from European competition because of fan trouble during the 1972 European Cup Winners’ Cup final.

As a result, UEFA refused to endorse the competition until the following season, where Ajax beat Rangers 6–3 on aggregate over two legs.

The first Super Cup officially recognised and supported by European football governing body was in 1973, again won by Ajax, who defeated AC Milan 6–1 on aggregate.

Real Madrid are the current holders and are also the competition’s most successful club with six titles.

No French team has ever won the Super Cup, although this will be PSG’s second appearance after they lost the 1996 edition to Juventus.

It will be a first time in the Super Cup for Spurs, meaning whatever the outcome there will be a new name on the trophy this year.

The 2025 UEFA Super Cup will take place on Wednesday, August 13, with kick-off at 20:00 (UK time).

If the scores are level after 90 minutes, there will be no extra-time and so the clash will be decided by a penalty shootout.

The timings will be far from ideal for Spurs with the 2025-26 Premier League season getting underway just two days later.

Where is the 2025 Super Cup?

The Super Cup will take place in Udine’s Stadio Friuli, the home of Italian top-flight side Udinese.

The stadium has a capacity of 25,144.

Ange Postecoglou has rued Spurs’ defeat at home to Forest as “another one” Tottenham “let slip” – but explained how his side can trouble runaway leaders Liverpool when they visit Anfield next.

Goals inside the opening 17 minutes put the third-placed visitors on their way to a 2-1 win, although Tottenham rallied after their wretched start, replying through Richarlison’s header three minutes from time and finishing with an expected goals tally more than three times greater than Forest’s.

“The most frustrating thing is that our football outside of [conceding] was outstanding,” Postecoglou told Sky Sports. “We couldn’t dominate any more than we did and created chances.

“It’s hurt us all year that we’ve conceded poor goals and given ourselves a mountain to climb. It’s not about our football – it’s about maintaining our focus and concentration for the whole game. We’ve lost too many in that manner, which is why we’re in the position we are.”

Liverpool vs Tottenham

Tottenham are 16th and have little to play for in the league, but they could prevent Liverpool from winning the title with four games to spare on Sunday (16:30 BST).

Should second-placed Arsenal avoid defeat at home to Crystal Palace on Wednesday (20:00), the Reds will have to match the Gunners’ result to lift the trophy after full time against Spurs.

“If we play like we did today but keep our concentration levels where they should be, we can give them a game,” a dejected-seeming Postecoglou observed. “But we still need to rectify a couple of things.”

Liverpool won 4-0 at home to Tottenham in the second leg of the EFL Cup semi-finals on February 6, having lost the first leg 1-0.

They beat Spurs 6-3 away on December 22 and have not lost the fixture at home since May 2011.

Postecoglou: Spurs ‘want to maintain momentum’

Postecoglou said he had pre-planned the substitutions of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero at half-time to manage their fitness during an injury-strewn campaign for the defenders.

Dejan Kulusevski and Wilson Odobert were withdrawn in the 67th minute for the same reasons, with Postecoglou acknowledging that the first leg of Tottenham’s Europa League semi-final at home to Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt on May 1 (20:00) is a priority.

“We want to maintain momentum and, unfortunately, we missed that opportunity,” said the Australian. “It’s a game [against Forest] we should never lose – another one we’ve let slip.”

Tottenham vs Nottingham Forest

Elliot Anderson’s first-time shot from the edge of the box deflected past Guglielmo Vicario to give Forest a fifth-minute lead before the goalkeeper mistimed coming off his line to allow Chris Wood to head past him from Anthony Elanga’s cross.

In between the goals, Wood thought he had struck from Anderson’s cross but was denied by semi-automated offside technology as part of a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) check, with Postecoglou showing familiar annoyance at the time the review took.

Jamie Redknapp has claimed Ange Postecoglou cupped his hands at Tottenham fans in a show of defiance during his side’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea before failing to fully acknowledge them after the full-time whistle.

Spurs suffered their 16th loss in 30 Premier League games this season courtesy of Enzo Fernandez’s second-half header, although 14th-placed Spurs had a spectacular Pape Matar Sarr equaliser ruled out following a lengthy Video Assistant Referee check.

“When they scored, it looked like he cupped his hands to the Spurs fans as if to say ‘listen, I know better'”, said Redknapp, who played for Spurs between 2002 and 2005, speaking to Sky Sports while watching Postecoglou as the teams left the pitch.

“Normally, he’d be over there clapping them. There’s a disconnect between the two at the moment. It’s not ideal for the manager but he’s got big games ahead.”

Postecoglou ‘wanted Spurs fans to cheer’

Postecoglou, who lambasted the check on Sarr’s strike from 40 yards, said the incident had been misinterpreted. “I wanted them to cheer,” he told the broadcaster, responding to suggestions that supporters had derided his substitutions and chanted “you don’t know what you’re doing.”

“We’d just scored a cracking goal. I was listening because I wanted them to cheer, because they haven’t had a lot to cheer about. They’re allowed to boo but I wanted them to cheer.”

The Australian felt the length of the VAR review showed that the decision was not “clear and obvious” as defined by officiating guidance, but Redknapp and Sky Sports interview Patrick Davison both said they believed the call was correct.

Sarr was booked for a foul on Moises Caicedo in the build-up to the goal, while Caicedo had a goal ruled out minutes earlier when a VAR check chalked off his volley because Levi Colwill was deemed to have been offside.

Chelsea vs Tottenham: Postecoglou ‘lonely’

Both of Tottenham’s attempts on target came after the break in a game that ensured only the bottom four have taken fewer points than Postecoglou’s side from 30 league games.

“He looks lonely at times,” said Redknapp, who has strongly criticised Postecoglou previously but also defended how difficult the manager’s job is.

“He stands in that technical area on his own, he gets no support. He’s probably getting no support whatsoever from the board.

“I feel like sometimes you want someone – but he obviously doesn’t – throwing a few suggestions to him. That’s not how he obviously coaches. It’s not helping his cause because it makes him look even lonelier.”

Tottenham fixtures: ‘Keep going’

Spurs’ campaign depends on their Europa League quarter-final against Eintracht Frankfurt, who are third in Germany and visit London for the first leg on April 10 (20:00 BST).

They will seek a first league win in five games when they host Southampton on Sunday (14:00 BST), having beaten the rock-bottom side 5-0 away on December 15.

“He’s got to keep his head up, keep going, keep working hard, believe in what he’s trying to do,” said Redknapp.

“It was a tough night for them – they never really played or got going. These are the pressures of being a Premier League manager.”

AC Milan and Fabio Paratici have reached an agreement for the former Tottenham chief to take over as the Rossoneri’s new sporting director, according to reports.

Paratici, formerly Juventus’ Chief Football Officer and Spurs’ lead in the transfer market, is set to be officially named Milan’s sporting director in the coming weeks following successful negotiations between both parties on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, Paratici met with Milan CEO Giorgio Furlani in London to discuss the move, despite Daniel Levy’s best efforts to bring him back to North London once his FIFA ban had ended.

Sky Sport Italia believe that Paratici, 52, has agreed to terms with Milan and will assume his new role at the start of the 2025-26 season.

Di Marzio has added that all the legal formalities will be completed in the coming weeks, meaning an official club announcement could be made within the next few months.

Paratici is currently serving a 30-month ban, which is scheduled to conclude in July 2025.

He was handed his ban for malpractice during his time at Juventus and was found guilty of falsifying accounts.

But with his ban coming to an end, Paratici will return to Serie A after four years away. He departed Juventus in 2021 after an 11-year tenure, during which the club secured nine Serie A titles.

One of Paratici’s first responsibilities at Milan will be selecting a new head coach for the 2025-26 season. According to the latest reports, Marseille’s Roberto De Zerbi is the leading candidate for the position.

However, Paratici will likely have his own ideas on what sort of manager he wants to bring to San Siro.

Tottenham: Postecoglou admits there are ‘outstanding candidates’ if Spurs sack him - 101greatgoals.com

Ange Postecoglou has admitted there are some “outstanding candidates” if Tottenham decide to sack him.

The under-pressure Australian, whose Spurs side sit a disappointing 13th in the Premier League, says speculation over his future does not “rock my world” and insists he is relaxed on the matter.

Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has reportedly been earmarked as Spurs’ top choice to replace Postecoglou.

Ahead of facing Chelsea on Thursday, the Spurs boss said: “I know what my responsibilities are. I’m sure if the club decide to go in a different direction, there are some outstanding candidates out there for it.

“It doesn’t rock my world, it doesn’t consume me. I am here and passionate about what we are doing.

“I was brought in to change the way the club plays, rejuvenate the squad and bring success. I am focused on that and that’s what I’ll keep doing.”

Ange on Poch return: ‘I hope it happens for him’

Former boss and Spurs favourite Pochettino has once again been linked with a return after admitting he would like to return to the North London club one day.

Asked about those comments, Postecoglou said: “Mauricio hopefully wants to come back one day, I hope it happens for him. We all have dreams and aspirations.

“You’re suggesting he was trying to put pressure on me?”

When asked whether the timing felt disrespectful, the 59-year-old replied: “Well I don’t feel disrespected.

“If you ask Mauricio that question directly, you’d get a pretty clear answer as to what his intent was.

“Again, nothing for me to be consumed with.”
