Emmanuel Adebayor makes clear where loyalties lie with Arsenal and Tottenham comment - Daily Express
Description

Few footballers cross north London without damaging their reputation on one side or the other, and Emmanuel Adebayor is no exception. The former forward made his name at Arsenal before subsequently representing Tottenham, with a controversial stint at Manchester City sandwiched in between.

Whilst his three-and-a-half years at the Emirates Stadium are generally considered the finest chapter of his career, the Togolese striker has confessed he "hates" Arsenal, pointing to the bitter circumstances surrounding his 2009 exit. Just weeks after his £25million transfer to City, Adebayor netted the winning goal in a 4-2 victory at the Etihad Stadium before notoriously racing the full length of the pitch to celebrate in front of the Arsenal supporters.

In 2018, he spoke openly about his "hate" for Arsenal and his enduring bitterness towards former boss Arsene Wenger, alleging he felt forced out of the club. "I had a meeting with Arsene Wenger in his office when he told me I had to leave because he doesn't see my future any more in Arsenal. I have to move on in my life," Adebayor said.

"I was like 'I'm going to stay.' He was like 'no there is not even a fight organised. We are not going to organise any fight for you. You move out or you stay here and don't play any games.'

"So I didn't have any other choice than joining Man City which I was very happy to join. And the next day when I joined Manchester City I saw him doing a press conference in London saying that I wanted to leave because the money was big and everything, and since that day that is where the hate for Arsenal came from.

"Not the fans because the fans are the first English fans to sing my name in London. Even today when I watch them play I want them to win but at the same time I want them to lose because the anger in me is too big."

When questioned about what was running through his mind during his controversial goal celebration against Arsenal, Adebayor responded: "A prisoner is out. A prisoner is free."

He continued: "I play for the club for three and a half years. They bought me for three or four million, they sold me for 27m, and they are still calling me names. They are still telling me I leave for money.

"You bought me for £3m, I still have five years' contract and you let me go for £20m more and you are telling me I am the one leaving for money and you are abusing me."

Adebayor signed for Arsenal from AS Monaco in 2006 as a raw but gifted prospect. With established forwards such as Thierry Henry and Robin van Persie positioned above him in the hierarchy, first-team chances were initially scarce.

However, Adebayor fought his way into contention, eventually netting 62 goals in 142 appearances for the Gunners - including an impressive 30-goal haul during the 2007/08 season. His stint at City proved briefer and less successful.

Following just one campaign as a first-choice player, he lost favour after manager Roberto Mancini's appointment, who favoured Carlos Tevez and Edin Dzeko up front.

Halfway through the 2010/11 campaign, Adebayor joined Real Madrid on loan before arranging another temporary switch to Tottenham for the 2011/12 season.

Having ended as Spurs' leading marksman with 17 goals in 33 Premier League matches, the transfer became permanent in a £5m deal. He would subsequently net 42 goals in 113 appearances for Tottenham before departing for Crystal Palace in 2015, having surrendered his position to emerging striker Harry Kane.

Adebayor remains one of only four players to have represented both Arsenal and Tottenham in the Premier League era - alongside William Gallas, David Bentley and Rohan Ricketts - highlighting the lasting hostility of North London's most intense rivalry.

The two sides meet at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday in what will be Igor Tudor's first match as interim Spurs manager. Arsenal will be eager to claim all three points to consolidate their position at the top of the table, while Tottenham are looking to increase their gap to the relegation zone.

Ex-Tottenham goalkeeper to blame for incredible own goal you've never seen before - Daily Express
Description

Ex-Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Josh Oluwayemi committed a shocking blunder that led to a very unique own goal for Wellington Phoenix in their match against Auckland FC. The 24-year-old shot-stopper, who joined the New Zealand team in 2024, is a product of Spurs' youth system but never made a senior appearance. Since his move to the southern hemisphere, the goalkeeper has been a regular feature for the Kiwi side and was in the starting line-up for their Friday afternoon clash with Auckland FC.

With the score at 0-0, calamity struck as Oluwayemi netted an extraordinary own goal, marking the start of a disastrous afternoon. In the 24th minute, Auckland defender Jake Girdwood-Reich launched the ball upfield to clear his lines. It flew over the Phoenix defence and towards Oluwayemi, who was well outside his box.

Despite facing no immediate threat, the former Spurs academy player attempted to head the ball away but botched his clearance, heading the ball into his own net from outside the 18-yard box.

Commentators were stunned by the incident, gasping as the ex-Spurs youngster made the mistake, whilst fans and players alike were left bewildered.

Things took a turn for the worse for the Nix in the New Zealand derby, with Auckland triumphing 5-0 and prompting Wellington head coach Giancarlo Italiano to resign.

Jesse Randal doubled Auckland's advantage on the half-hour mark, adding to Oluwayemi's woes, before collapsing at the end of the second half.

Guillermo May added a third goal four minutes before the interval, with Randall netting his second during the fifth minute of stoppage time at the end of the first half.

The Nix faced an uphill battle, and Lachlan Brook sealed the victory for the visitors in the 74th minute. Oluwayemi joined Tottenham in 2011 as a 10-year-old and spent nine years in the north London club's youth system.

Thomas Frank tipped for PL job after Tottenham exit

Thomas Frank tipped for Premier League job after Tottenham exit with 'lesser club' claim - Daily Express
Description

Former Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank has been backed to secure another Premier League job in the future, with Crystal Palace suggested as a possible landing spot. Frank was sacked by Spurs earlier this month and has since been succeeded by Igor Tudor, who will remain in the dugout until the end of the season.

Frank's final fixture at the helm of Tottenham was the 2-1 loss to Newcastle United in the Premier League earlier this month, a setback which leaves them in 16th place in the standings and just five points clear of the relegation zone.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

If and when Frank will return to the touchline remains uncertain, having previously enjoyed a seven-year stint at Brentford before switching to north London last summer. Despite the difficulties in the Premier League this season, Frank still succeeded in steering Tottenham to fourth spot in the league phase of the Champions League, which guaranteed progression to the last-16 whilst bypassing the play-offs.

Frank's prospects have now been examined on talkSPORT by hosts Simon Jordan and Jim White. Jordan has outlined why Frank will be capable of securing another Premier League appointment, though believes it won't be at a "big club".

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"Has he [Frank] been diminished? Of course he has. But success isn't always a straight line,” Jordan said on talkSPORT. “He will have to rebuild a little bit, but now what is being considered is that he's not capable of managing a big club. He's clearly capable of managing clubs.

"People are now going to go after him because of the job Keith Andrews is doing [at Brentford]. But if the culture of the club is right, you hand over a decent opportunity. But it will be interesting to find out from him what lessons he thinks he's learned from the mistakes at Tottenham.

"He's now back in the club of managers who can manage in the Premier League but only a certain type of club. But is that an awful thing? To be able to manage but just not a big six club."

White then suggested to Jordan whether Palace might represent Frank's next move, given the uncertainty surrounding Oliver Glasner's position at Selhurst Park.

"Yeah, possibly," Jordan answered. "A Palace job might be a reasonable job, but Palace fans might say, 'You catapulted Tottenham into a relegation battle, we don't want any of that.'

"But there must be a raft of loads of other reasons behind it. But Thomas Frank's next opportunity will be a lesser club."

Glasner's future at Palace has generated speculation throughout much of the campaign, with the 51-year-old widely anticipated to depart the Eagles during the summer when his contract runs out. However, with Palace experiencing a difficult spell recently, having secured just one Premier League win since the start of the year, Glasner was quizzed on whether he intends to fulfil the remaining months of his contract.

"Let's see. What the future brings, we never know,” Glasner informed reporters on Friday. Tottenham and Palace are scheduled to face off in the Premier League on March 5.

Arsenal injury update after Saka and Trossard concerns for Tottenham derby

Arsenal injury update after Bukayo Saka and Leandro Trossard concerns for Tottenham derby - Daily Express
Description

Bukayo Saka's injury concern against Wolves appears to be nothing significant to fret about, despite the winger being withdrawn once more at Molineux. Leandro Trossard came on for Saka after he hobbled off with what looked like a problem with his knee. The Arsenal star received treatment on the field in the second half before being taken off, but he is not believed to be injured, according to the London Evening Standard.

There was encouraging news following the match regarding his fitness for the north London derby against Tottenham on Sunday, as he'll be fine going forward. Saka was also present for post-match duties after the 2-2 draw, which is another indicator that he should remain available for the crucial derby clash.

Meanwhile, Trossard, originally selected on the bench by Mikel Arteta, was also forced off in added time on Wednesday evening. He was substituted by Riccardo Calafiori, who watched the ball deflect off him for Wolves' late and costly leveller.

The extent of a possible injury to Trossard is yet to be established, though it's suggested he could be a doubt to face Spurs.

Arsenal ultimately surrendered more points in the Premier League title battle, being held to a 2-2 draw despite holding a two-goal lead.

The Gunners had been in front for the majority of the match, with Saka breaking the deadlock with a close-range header after just four minutes.

Piero Hincapie's strike, which VAR determined to be onside, doubled the advantage for the visitors. However, Hugo Bueno's stunning curled strike into the top corner dragged Wolves back into the contest, and ultimately Arsenal buckled under the pressure in added time, with David Raya and Gabriel becoming entangled as Samuel Edozie hammered home.

Speaking to the BBC following the frustrating draw, Saka said: "Disappointed. Not much else to say. There was a big difference in how we played in the first half and the second half. We dropped our standards and we got punished for it.

"Time to focus on ourselves, improve our standards and improve our performances and it is in our control."

The outcome has handed Manchester City a chance to narrow the deficit to two points before the north London derby, as Pep Guardiola's team will host Newcastle on Saturday evening.

Cristian Romero's Frank snub speaks volumes as Tudor faces Spurs issue

Cristian Romero's Thomas Frank snub speaks volumes as Igor Tudor faces Tottenham issue - Daily Express
Description

Cristian Romero has sparked surprise after choosing not to acknowledge Thomas Frank's exit from Tottenham Hotspur on social media - in contrast to several of his team-mates. The Argentine centre-back, who publicly paid tribute to Ange Postecoglou upon his departure, remained silent regarding the Dane following his sacking.

Frank was dismissed earlier this month, with Spurs languishing in 16th place in the Premier League and without a victory in eight fixtures. The 2-1 loss to Newcastle United proved the decisive moment. Just a small number of players - Richarlison, Joao Palhinha and Pedro Porro - posted goodbye messages on social media. Skipper Romero chose to remain silent on this matter, despite having shared an extensive farewell post when Postecoglou left the club last year.

At the time, Romero wrote: "Ange, thank you for these two incredible seasons. You're a fantastic coach, but above all, a great person who deserves the best. From day one you paved the way despite the many obstacles that always existed and always will exist.

"Beyond everything, we won a trophy and went down in the history of this beautiful club, which is the only thing that matters. I wish you the best because you deserve the best, and thank you for everything."

Over the coming weeks, he must work to bring players back onside and restore a sense of unity at a time when every point matters in their Premier League campaign. Spurs sit just three points above the relegation zone, and Tudor's first match in charge could hardly be more difficult. Tudor's dugout debut comes in the north London derby against Arsenal on Sunday (4:30pm), a fixture that will test both the team and his ability to steady a squad clearly lacking in confidence.

Tottenham set Igor Tudor three demands as new Spurs boss aware of task at hand

Tottenham set Igor Tudor three demands as new Spurs boss aware of task at hand - Daily Express
Description

Igor Tudor has been set three objectives by Tottenham as he prepares to lead the north Londoners until the end of the season. The man from Croatia has been appointed to replace Thomas Frank, who was sacked last week, on an interim basis. He will be tasked with steering Spurs away from relegation trouble and ensuring Premier League survival before the campaign draws to a close.

Tudor arrived in England over the weekend and officially started work with his Tottenham players on Monday. He will be given a baptism of fire on Sunday afternoon when he takes charge of his first game against bitter rivals and Premier League leaders Arsenal. An unlikely victory would go a long way to instilling some much-needed confidence after a dreadful campaign to date.

Tottenham confirmed Tudor's appointment on Saturday, with their statement making it crystal clear what the 47-year-old will be judged on during his time at the club.

The statement read: "Igor joins us with a clear focus: to improve performances, deliver results and move us up the Premier League table.

"His mandate is straightforward – bring organisation, intensity and competitive edge to the squad at a decisive stage of the campaign."

Tudor, meanwhile, said that he understood the assignment as he looks to lead Tottenham away from the lower reaches of the Premier League table.

"It is an honour to join this club at an important moment," he said. I understand the responsibility I have been handed and my focus is clear

"To bring greater consistency to our performances and compete with conviction in every match. There is strong quality in this playing squad, and my job is to organise it, energise it and improve our results quickly."

Tudor will also be tasked with mounting a deep run in the Champions League after Tottenham breezed through the league phase in fourth place, behind only Arsenal, Bayern Munich and Liverpool.

Sporting director Johan Lange said: "Igor brings clarity, intensity and experience of stepping into challenging moments and producing impact.

Tottenham stars know where they stand with Igor Tudor after training remarks - Daily Express
Description

Igor Tudor will ensure his Tottenham players are fully committed in training if his previous remarks are anything to go by. The ex-Juventus star spent nearly a decade in Italy as a player, clinching the Serie A title and reaching the UEFA Champions League final in the 2002/03 season.

After clocking up 229 appearances and netting 25 goals from centre-half, Tudor hung up his boots in 2008 and transitioned into management. His managerial career has been somewhat nomadic, overseeing 10 different clubs in 12 different countries over the past 13 years. More recently, this includes a brief tenure at Juve – where he was dismissed – and a spell at Lazio, where he stepped down after guiding the club on an impressive league run.

Tudor was unveiled as the interim manager of Spurs on Saturday, with the challenge of steering the club clear of the dreaded relegation zone. Currently sitting 16th and a mere five points from danger, the Croatian certainly has a tough job ahead.

However, this task is unlikely to intimidate Tudor, who told DAZN last August just how crucial maintaining discipline among his players is. Reflecting on his football upbringing in 2025, the 47-year-old said: "Alessandro Del Piero used to get mad if we lost a game in training.

This straightforward statement makes it clear to Tottenham players that they won't be allowed to coast through training sessions under the Croatian. With numerous crucial fixtures ahead, including a last-16 tie in the Champions League, it is vital that he hits the ground running.

A baptism of fire awaits in his opening match as manager when Tottenham welcome Arsenal for a north London derby on February 22, followed by a visit to Fulham and a home encounter with Crystal Palace.

Tudor is insistent he is prepared for the task and wants performances to improve rapidly. He said: "It is an honour to join this Club at an important moment.

Tottenham's next manager is obvious as Igor Tudor appointment confirmed

Submitted by daniel on

Tottenham's next manager is obvious as Igor Tudor appointment confirmed - Daily Express
Description

It’s safe to assume nobody saw this one coming. Not so much Thomas Frank getting the sack, given Tottenham's latest defeat against Newcastle was their 11th Premier League loss of the season.

But rather, Igor Tudor ushered in as interim until the end of the season. It’s certainly an eyebrow-raiser, with Tudor having never managed in England, as well as struggling during his most recent managerial stint with Juventus.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Granted, the Croatian was initially brought in as a caretaker to steady the ship with the Serie A outfit - something that isn’t too dissimilar to his role at Spurs. But after being given the role on a permanent basis, Tudor was axed just a couple of months into the season, having overseen an eight-game winless streak.

Then there’s the play philosophy. Tudor often favours a three-at-the-back setup, which could be difficult for Tottenham, who have struggled to find three fit centre-backs in recent times. Coupled with an often high-intensity, high-line, fast-flowing style of play (think Ange Postecoglou), and it looks like a disaster waiting to happen.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Perhaps the only sensible part of this appointment is the fact that it’s only on an interim basis. And if you read between the lines, it feels pretty obvious why… Spurs want Mauricio Pochettino to return.

Pochettino is currently in charge of the United States national team, with the Argentine gearing up for this summer’s World Cup in North America. His contract with the nation is set to run until the autumn, which would clear the path for a return to club management following the World Cup.

It’s easy to see why the Spurs hierarchy would want Pochettino to return. They need an appointment that is going to get the fans back on their side, given the fractured relationship between the Spurs faithful and the boardroom.

Plus, in the last 10 years, he’s the only manager who’s actually enjoyed a consistent spell at the club. They were wrong to have sacked him in 2019, but now, albeit tails between their legs, they’d be right to roll the red carpet out for a return.

Igor Tudor’s true feelings on Tottenham players emerge

Igor Tudor’s true feelings on players emerge in his first words as Tottenham manager - Daily Express
Description

Igor Tudor vowed to "energise" Tottenham Hotspur in his first words as interim manager. Spurs have officially appointed the Croatian, just three nights after sacking Thomas Frank.

Spurs currently sit 16th in the Premier League standings, but are in the last-16 of the Champions League after finishing fourth in the group phase. While Frank thrived in Europe's elite competition, he found results hard to come by domestically. As well as failing to win a Premier League match in 2026, Spurs fans bemoaned his style of football and constant tinkering. In his first words as manager, Tudor made it clear he expects his players to play with greater intensity and purpose.

Tottenham star already knows what Igor Tudor thinks of him after attitude claim

Tottenham star already knows what Igor Tudor thinks of him after attitude claim - Daily Express
Description

Igor Tudor will be looking forward to the prospect of working alongside Randal Kolo Muani at Tottenham if his previous comments at Juventus are any indication. Tudor has been appointed as Spurs' caretaker manager until the end of the season following Thomas Frank's exit.

His mission is to salvage the club's domestic campaign, with the team currently sitting just five points clear of the drop zone. Frank was dismissed by the north London outfit after a difficult run of results that has seen them fall to 16th in the Premier League standings. As a result, Spurs were determined to secure a seasoned manager capable of delivering swift results - and Tudor certainly matches that profile.

He has enjoyed spells at Lazio and Juventus in recent seasons, during which he worked alongside current Tottenham forward Muani. Tudor was sacked within twelve months at Juve after succeeding Thiago Motta, though not before steering them towards a Champions League qualification position in the Serie A standings.

Prior to this, he served as head coach at Lazio. While he lasted just 11 games before stepping down, he secured six victories, suffered two defeats and recorded three draws. This proved the instant influence that Tudor can have over a short period.

Before he began his work with Juve, Tudor was quick to commend Muani during his first press conference. He said: "We also have Kolo Muani, and their [alongside Dusan Vlahovic] presence is a big advantage for the team."

Muani continued to earn Tudor's praise following Juve's 2-0 victory over Monza, with the striker finding the net in the opening half to double his side's lead.

Speaking afterwards, Tudor said: "I liked Kolo Muani's performance a lot, especially from an attitude perspective: he was able to understand the match well, it was a complete performance."

These remarks demonstrate that Tudor has high expectations for his trusted attacking option over the remainder of the season. Muani is presently on loan at Spurs from Paris-Saint Germain and has registered just six goal contributions across 27 appearances so far.
