Description

Tottenham turned down transfer bids from Chelsea and Aston Villa for Lucas Bergvall during the January transfer window. The 20-year-old proved instrumental at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium last season under Ange Postecoglou and claimed the club's player of the year award after contributing to their Europa League triumph.

Under Thomas Frank, who left his role as manager earlier this week, Bergvall featured from the start in only 16 matches and has sometimes been deployed in wider positions. According to The Athletic, Chelsea and Villa are amongst the long-standing admirers of the Sweden international and established direct communication with Spurs last month.

The report suggests they explored a potential transfer, but Spurs are understood to have firmly rejected any departure. Villa allegedly made their approach after Spurs secured the signature of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid ahead of them.

Chelsea's pursuit came after their modest interest in Douglas Luiz, who made his return to Villa Park. Bergvall is now anticipated to attract attention in the summer at Spurs, particularly if they fail to qualify for European competition.

The midfielder arrived at the club in June 2024 from Djurgarden and penned a fresh contract merely 12 months afterwards. His existing deal extends until the summer of 2031.

Before his transfer to the Premier League, Barcelona tried to thwart Tottenham's bid to lure him to Spain. However, Bergvall chose to relocate to north London and he has been a steady performer under various managers.

Bergvall is currently out of action for Tottenham following an ankle surgery. The midfielder is anticipated to be sidelined for up to three months after sustaining the injury in the 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Next Tottenham boss contender was forced to quit club after players revolted - Daily Express
Description

Former Borussia Dortmund manager Edin Terzic is understood to be one of five contenders to succeed Igor Tudor at Tottenham. Tudor, 47, has agreed to become caretaker boss until the conclusion of the current campaign. The ex-Galatasaray, Marseille and Juventus manager serves as an interim solution while chief executive Vinai Venkatesham and sporting director Johan Lange assess a broader pool of candidates ahead of a summer appointment.

Amongst those under consideration is German-Croatian tactician Terzic, 43, who progressed up the ladder at Dortmund having initially served as a scout within the Bundesliga outfit's academy, working directly under then-boss Jurgen Klopp. A caretaker stint overseeing the senior side during the latter half of the 2020/21 campaign yielded DFB-Pokal glory. Following the mutual departure of his successor Marco Rose, who's also being named in connection with Spurs' managerial vacancy, at the conclusion of the subsequent season, Terzic was eventually handed the role on a permanent basis.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

It stands as the only senior permanent position on his managerial record, though one which boasts considerable credentials. Dortmund came tantalisingly close to breaking Bayern Munich's 10-year stranglehold on the title during his maiden season.

They narrowly missed out on the title on goal difference after a 2-2 draw with Mainz on the final day. The subsequent season was less remarkable domestically, with only a fifth-place finish, but they made it to the Champions League final before a 2-0 loss to Real Madrid once again shattered Black and Yellow hearts.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

However, behind closed doors, Terzic was grappling with a player mutiny. In December 2023, Sky Germany revealed that a significant portion of the team wanted him out due to his perceived lack of influence during training sessions.

Despite their affection for his personality, they believed he was deficient in the tactical aspect, particularly in terms of pressing. His defensive approach wasn't winning any fans in the squad, with some players even going so far as to voice their concerns to then-CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke behind his back.

Bild reported that club icon Marco Reus was one of the main instigators of this revolt. However, their pleas fell on deaf ears, with Watzke refusing to sack Terzic halfway through the season.

This proved to be merely a temporary reprieve. As is often the case, player power eventually prevailed, with Terzic asking to leave at the end of the season, presumably considering his position untenable given the widespread distrust.

This could potentially raise concerns for Spurs, who according to the Telegraph have included him and Rose in their list of potential managers. Roberto De Zerbi, who recently left Marseille, and fan favourite ex-manager Mauricio Pochettino, who's committed to guiding the United States in their home World Cup this summer, are also being considered, along with Ferencváros head coach and former forward Robbie Keane.

Man Utd face Michael Carrick twist as Premier League rivals agree deal

Man Utd face Michael Carrick twist as Premier League rivals agree deal - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly set to rival Manchester United for the services of Michael Carrick at the end of the season. The 44-year-old has made a strong impression at Old Trafford since taking over as interim manager from Ruben Amorim last month.

Carrick's unbeaten run, which includes victories over Manchester City, Arsenal, Fulham and Spurs, as well as a draw with West Ham, has sparked rumours that he could be offered a permanent role at United this summer. However, Tottenham may also be in the running for his signature following the dismissal of Thomas Frank after a disappointing eight-month spell in north London. With Spurs currently sitting 16th in the Premier League table and facing a potential relegation battle, the club's board decided it was time for a change.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

While there were initial suggestions that a new permanent manager would be appointed ahead of next weekend's North London Derby, it now seems that Spurs may follow United's lead by appointing an interim boss. Reports indicate that former Juventus manager Igor Tudor is set to take the reins until the end of the season having agreed a deal, at which point Spurs will reassess their managerial options.

Reports from The Athletic suggest that the 47-year-old may not be presented with the opportunity to assume a permanent position this summer. Meanwhile, TEAMtalk reports indicate that Tottenham Hotspur could pursue Carrick's appointment this summer, with claims emerging that the North London club had contemplated taking a punt on the former Middlesbrough boss before ultimately settling on Frank.

This development comes amid speculation linking several high-profile names with the United hot seat this summer, including Oliver Glasner, Gareth Southgate, Luis Enrique and Andoni Iraola. Carrick has also surfaced as a potential candidate to prolong his tenure at Old Trafford, though this could hinge upon his performance across the remaining 12 fixtures.

However, other potential managerial targets have removed themselves from contention. Thomas Tuchel has committed to remaining with the England national side for a further two years, while Carlo Ancelotti is poised to pen a new four-year deal with Brazil.

Roberto De Zerbi has also been touted for the Spurs job following his departure from Marseille on the same day Frank received his marching orders. Carrick will undoubtedly remain focused on the task at hand rather than external speculation, channelling his efforts towards delivering the strongest possible finish for United.

United's next challenge is a trip to Hill Dickinson Stadium, where they will face Everton on Monday, 23rd February. Igor Tudor's appointment at Tottenham proves clowns are still running the circus

Igor Tudor's appointment at Tottenham proves clowns are still running the circus - Daily Express
Description

It’s deja vu at Tottenham Hotspur. For the sixth time since 2019, the north London outfit are searching for a new manager. It’s the second time since May, with Spurs fans understandably frustrated.

Thomas Frank is the latest casualty who leaves the Dr Tottenham's medical practice without finding a cure. The Dane will go down as the club’s worst-ever Premier League manager, at least from a winning percentage perspective. Across his eight-month stint, Frank won just 27 per cent of matches.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

But, it would be unfair to place all of the blame on Frank specifically. For starters, his two chief creators, James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have been unavailable all season, while summer signing Mohammed Kudus also picked up a long-term injury towards the back end of 2025.

Couple that with the other fitness problems that plagued the Tottenham ranks and it’s easy to see how things so easily derailed. That’s just the sad reality of Tottenham in 2026 though. Be that through bad luck, or mismanagement behind the scenes, the club has a tendency to pose as a circus, with clowns often the ones running it.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Which makes the appointment of Igor Tudor as interim all the more baffling. A man with no experience in English football, whose most recent stint in the dugout ended even more catastrophically than Frank’s.

Having just about steadied the ship at Juventus as a caretaker last season, he was given the job on a permanent basis. Not so much because the Croatian had excelled, but more so because there weren’t that many alternatives to turn to instead! By October 2025 he’d been shown the door, having gone eight games without a win.

His play style doesn’t exactly scream a perfect fit for Spurs either. The 47-year-old tends to favour a three-at-the-back set-up, which could prove difficult for Spurs who have struggled to field two fit centre-backs, let alone three. He’s also a fan of high-intensity, front-foot football. Again, just ask Ange Postecoglou how that ended up.

There is a world where this all works out pretty nicely. Tudor comes in, drags Spurs away from a relegation scrap (the fact that’s the reality for Tottenham is alarming enough), while keeping the manager’s seat warm for Mauricio Pochettino or Roberto De Zerbi in the summer. The early indications are that this isn’t an interim appointment with a view to making it permanent, and given Tudor’s track record at holding down a position, that is probably for the better.

Tottenham next manager bombshell drops as 'agreement' reached after Thomas Frank sacking - Daily Express
Description

Former Juventus boss Igor Tudor will replace Thomas Frank at Tottenham after reaching an agreement.

Tottenham Hotspur have reached a verbal agreement with former Juventus boss Igor Tudor to join the club until the end of the season. Spurs sacked Thomas Frank on Wednesday with the club sat 16th in the Premier League table.

The club are expected to make an appointmet sooner rather than later, with them next in action against Arsenal next weekend. Tudor, who left Juventus in October, is expected to replace Frank, with reports suggesting he has been identified as the chosen candidate.

The 47-year-old, who played 55 times for Croatia, has managed Udinese, Hellas Verona, Marseille and Lazio. He left Turin earlier this season with the club eighth in Serie A.

Tudor began his coaching career with Hadjuk Split in 2013 before enjoying spells with PAOK, Karabukspor and Galatasaray, before being part of Andrea Pirlo's coaching staff at Juve in 2020.

Tudor is expected to move to north London on an interim basis until the end of the season. His primary task will be to keep the club away from the drop, with Spurs also in the Champions League.

Frank led Tottenham to the last 16 after finishing in the top eight. Victories over Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt in January meant Spurs avoided a play-off to progress.

Marco Rose's sour Klopp relationship, major betrayal and fan backlash

Tottenham target Marco Rose's strained Klopp relationship, major betrayal and fan backlash - Daily Express
Description

Marco Rose has emerged as the new favourite to take the reins at Tottenham. The 49-year-old German has moved ahead of Roberto De Zerbi, Mauricio Pochettino and John Heitinga in the race for the vacant managerial position after Thomas Frank was dismissed on Wednesday.

Rose, whose coaching CV features spells at RB Leipzig, Borussia Dortmund and Borussia Monchengladbach, has earned recognition as an energetic, attack-minded manager. His assertive, high-pressing approach has often led to parallels with former Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp. However, while their footballing principles overlap, Rose and Klopp have not consistently aligned. Indeed, friction between them erupted publicly in dramatic circumstances last year.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Soured relationship with Klopp

Some observers imagined Klopp and Rose forming an administrative dream team, yet at Leipzig the reality proved very different. Only three months joining as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, Klopp sanctioned Rose's exit, abruptly ending the latter's three-year spell with the Bundesliga outfit.

According to German publication Bild, Klopp had initially ranked among Rose's most vocal supporters, having bought him as a player during his tenure at Mainz 05. Nevertheless, their bond is said to have weakened after a poor sequence of performances - just two victories in 11 league fixtures - that pushed Leipzig out of the Champions League qualification positions and left Klopp "unsatisfied" with Leipzig's "sporting development" under Rose.

Several months afterward, Klopp conceded that dismissing Rose was "a bitter pill to swallow." In an interview with The Athletic, he remarked: "It's not great. It will never be my hobby. But it's things you have to do. What I want is to hire coaches for the right reasons. And if you finish working together, then it is also for the right reasons and not for the media asking for it."

Fan backlash

Rose's departure from Leipzig was not the first occasion he had exited a club under strained circumstances. His earlier appointment - a short-lived tenure at Dortmund - spanned just a single season, with Rose and club officials mutually deciding to separate at the end of the 2021/22 term.

Statistically, his return appeared solid. Dortmund accumulated a higher points total than in 2020/21 and jumped from third place to second in the standings. Yet many fans remained unconvinced, irritated by what they saw as inflexibility in his tactical setup.

There was a sense that the side leaned too heavily on prolific forward Erling Haaland. The framework was largely constructed to amplify the Norwegian's qualities, but when he was unavailable - or struggling for rhythm - Dortmund frequently lacked cutting edge in the final third. Supporters criticised the absence of an effective alternative strategy, particularly considering the offensive options at hand in Jude Bellingham, Marco Reus, Thorgan Hazard, Youssoufa Moukoko and Julian Brandt.

Defensive weaknesses also remained evident. Rose was unable to fully correct the transitional vulnerabilities that had troubled the team during the reign of his predecessor, Lucien Favre, as Dortmund allowed 52 league goals - the highest figure among the top six sides.

That uneven form, combined with underwhelming cup runs - a Champions League group-stage elimination, a Europa League knockout play-off loss to Rangers, and a surprise DFB-Pokal defeat to second-division FC St. Pauli - ultimately cast a shadow over Rose's brief spell and made his departure at season's end seem unavoidable.

Betrayal

Rose attracted significant acclaim across his two-year period at Monchengladbach from 2019 to 2021, though the chapter concluded on a disappointing note. A fourth-place finish in his opening campaign - including eight weeks atop the Bundesliga table - established a strong initial impression.

Advancing from a Champions League group containing Real Madrid, Inter Milan and Shakhtar Donetsk further elevated his standing, alongside Gladbach's bold, high-speed playing philosophy. But midway through his second year, Dortmund made their approach, and Rose agreed to assume control at the end of the campaign.

Angered by the loss of their head coach to a domestic competitor, Gladbach publicly announced his forthcoming exit - a move that unsettled the squad. The side dropped five of their subsequent six league encounters, fell out of the Champions League qualification places, then slipped from the Europa League spots and were eventually eliminated from the DFB-Pokal by Dortmund themselves.

For Rose, both the timing and the way the news was revealed felt like a betrayal. The club's management of the episode had a measurable effect on performances, damaged his rapport with fans and left a lingering stain on what had otherwise been a highly encouraging tenure.

Tottenham draw up five-man list for next manager as Mauricio Pochettino spotted in London - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham have reportedly identified five potential candidates to replace Thomas Frank as manager, with the interview process said to be underway. The north Londoners parted ways with Frank earlier this week, just hours after they were beaten at home by Newcastle. It proved to be the final straw after a disastrous reign that saw Spurs win just seven of their 26 league games.

They currently sit 16th in the table and are at serious risk of being dragged into another relegation battle following their 17th-placed finish last season. Despite their dreadful league form, Spurs are into the knockout stages of the Champions League after sailing through the league phase in fourth place. However, their exploits in Europe weren't enough to save Frank from being given the boot.

Tottenham are now in the process of appointing a new manager and have shortlisted five candidates, according to The Telegraph.

The report states that Marco Rose and Edin Terzic are among those on the list, although it's not clear if they are viewed as permanent or interim options.

Roberto De Zerbi, Mauricio Pochettino and Robbie Keane are also believed to be under consideration, with interviews now taking place and agents being contacted over the vacant manager's job.

It's been reported that Keane, who is currently in charge of Ferencvaros, would only be interested in a permanent role and wouldn't consider only steering the ship until the end of the season.

Pochettino, meanwhile, was spotted in London this week but is understood to be fully committed to leading the United States into a home World Cup in the summer.

He has already flirted with the idea of returning to Tottenham at some point in the future, though.

Speaking to Sky Sports last year, he said: "When I left the club I always remember one interview I said I would like one day to come back to Tottenham.

"I am in the USA, so I am not going to talk about that now, but what I said then I still, after six years or five years, feel in my heart. Yes, I would like one day to come back."

Pochettino once again hinted at a possible return to Spurs a few days ago, claiming their recent achievements are 'not enough' for a club of that stature.

Mauricio Pochettino has been seen in London amid speculation linking him with a return to Tottenham Hotspur following Thomas Frank's departure. The 53-year-old has emerged as a potential candidate for the Spurs managerial vacancy this summer, once he concludes his duties overseeing the USA's World Cup campaign.

The former Chelsea manager has been tipped for a sentimental homecoming to the club he guided to the 2019 Champions League final. Previously, he has expressed his eagerness to make a Premier League comeback, while also speaking glowingly about his time at Spurs. However, he will not be giving up the opportunity to manage the American hosts at the summer's World Cup. But while the north Londoners' pursuit for a caretaker or long-term appointment continues, Pochettino was photographed in the capital.

According to football.london, Pochettino remains a genuine contender for a summer appointment, with Spurs prepared to bring in a caretaker boss until the season concludes. Such an arrangement would allow the club sufficient time to assemble an attractive compensation package to persuade the USA to release Pochettino from his existing commitments ahead of schedule.

BBC Sport has learned that acquiring the Argentine could necessitate "one of the biggest financial compensation fees in football history," even if they waited until after the World Cup. In the Premier League, the record fee paid for a manager stands at the £21million Chelsea shelled out to secure Graham Potter from Brighton and Hove Albion.

Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Wilson Odobert has suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament and will require surgery on the injury. Odobert was withdrawn with injury shortly after the half-hour mark in Tuesday's defeat to Newcastle United.

The forward attempted to wrap his leg around Harvey Barnes to block the ball but twisted his left knee in the turf. Following treatment, Odobert departed the pitch and proceeded straight down the tunnel. The club have now confirmed he faces an extended spell on the sidelines.
