Description

Arne Slot has revealed that Liverpool are down to just one fit senior centre-back for Wednesday's crucial Champions League clash at home to Qarabag. However, the Reds boss is not anticipating his defensive options will be further depleted by Andy Robertson's potential exit before Monday's transfer deadline.

Joe Gomez will be absent from the fixture with the hip problem sustained when colliding with Alisson during the opening period of Saturday's 3-2 Premier League defeat at Bournemouth. Whilst Gomez may be available for the weekend's home fixture against Newcastle, Liverpool will have only Virgil van Dijk as a natural centre-back against Qarabag as they seek the win that would guarantee automatic qualification to the Champions League last 16.

Ibrahima Konate continues to be unavailable following the passing of his father.

When questioned about a timeframe for Gomez's return, Slot said: "No, not really. But I can confirm that he's not available for tomorrow evening. I expect him back in a relatively short time.

"I have spoken to (Ibou). He's having a hard time but I'm hoping and expecting him back soon, but also not for tomorrow evening's game."

Wataru Endo featured for the first time in over six weeks when coming on for Gomez during the final hour against Bournemouth, though Slot has suggested he is cautious about overloading the Japan midfielder following such an extended absence, with Ryan Gravenberch another option at centre-back.

"He has been out with an injury for quite a long time," said Slot of Endo. "He had to play against Bournemouth for quite a long time. And now tomorrow a game coming up and three days later another game coming up.

"But that is not the only way I decide on my line-up. Tactics are involved in that as well. It is for sure that at centre-back tomorrow there will not be a centre-back.

"We can only play a midfielder there, because there are no centre-backs available apart from Virgil, who is one of the players I credit a lot for him being fit all the time. At his age, to constantly be ready to play another 90 is something we should not take for granted."

Robertson, who also came off the bench at Bournemouth, will once again feature in the matchday squad on Wednesday following Liverpool's decision this week to halt initial discussions with Tottenham regarding a permanent transfer.

"Robbo is part of the team tomorrow evening," said Slot. "And he's been part of this squad, of this club for so many years. And I'm happy to have him.

Tottenham transfer drama as deal could be ripped up to facilitate last-minute swap - Daily Express
Description

Randal Kolo Muani is being linked with a move away from Tottenham Hotspur just a few months after joining the club. Spurs signed the France international on a season-long loan deal during last summer’s transfer window from Paris Saint-Germain.

Kolo Muani had spent the second half of last season on loan at Juventus and was heavily linked with a return to the Serie A giants, and is now being linked with a return to Italy.

The striker has featured 23 times for Tottenham across all competitions so far this season, but has just two goals to his name, both of which have come in the Champions League.

Now, a fresh report has emerged claiming that Kolo Muani’s time in North London may be coming to an early end.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

It has been reported by talkSPORT that Tottenham are weighing up whether or not to call time on Kolo Muani’s loan spell with the club, which would see the striker return to parent club PSG.

The report claims that Juventus are interested in re-signing the 27-year-old, who scored ten goals during his temporary stint at the club during the second half of last season, including two at the FIFA Club World Cup in the summer.

Despite Tottenham reportedly being open to letting Kolo Muani leave the club before the February 2 deadline, it has been stated that this would only happen if the club was to have a replacement already lined up.

Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush has been linked with a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in recent weeks, only a year after he completed a £59million switch to the Etihad Stadium from Eintracht Frankfurt.

Reports have speculated that Marmoush would prefer to remain in the Premier League if he were to leave Man City before next Monday’s deadline.

Rumours linking Marmoush with an exit have been fuelled by City signing Antoine Semenyo in a £64m deal with Bournemouth, which could see the Egypt international’s game time be limited for the rest of the season.

Marmoush spent more than a month away on international duty with Egypt at the Africa Cup of Nations, but has featured in each of City’s last two matches. He scored in City’s 2-0 win over Wolves in the Premier League at the weekend after being named in the starting line-up by manager Pep Guardiola.

Former Tottenham striker Mido urged his old club to secure Omar Marmoush's signature before the Egyptian joined Manchester City in 2025. The two sides are set to clash in the Premier League on Sunday, with Marmoush expected to feature for the away side in this crucial encounter.

However, the forward has been tipped for a switch to north London in recent weeks despite having spent only a year in Manchester. Pep Guardiola bolstered his attacking options in January by bringing in Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth for £64million. This move has raised doubts about Marmoush's position at the club, with Semenyo scoring three times and providing one assist in four outings for City so far. Fenerbahce have also emerged as suitors, with Turkish outlet Sabah claiming that the Super Lig outfit are willing to table £26million for the striker.

It's understood that Marmoush would prefer to stay in the Premier League, placing Tottenham at the head of the queue among interested parties. Former Spurs player Mido, who initially joined the club on loan before making the move permanent in 2006, appears to have been ahead of the curve in his advice to ex-chairman Daniel Levy to snap up the Egyptian before his Manchester switch.

Speaking on OnTime Sports, the fellow Egyptian revealed he had advised Levy to buy Liverpool's Mohamed Salah during his Basel days, and also to capture Marmoush's signature. He said: "I sent a text message via phone to Daniel Levy, the chairman of Tottenham, with whom I have a good relationship, to sign Mohamed Salah while he was playing in Basel.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"And I told him that it was necessary to sign Salah because he will be one of the best players in the world. The Tottenham chairman replied that he would follow up on the player, and I think he now regrets not signing him.

"A year and a half ago, I sent the same message to Daniel Levy, and told him to follow Omar Marmoush, and that he will be one of the best players in the world, but I do not think the club moved to include him."

Mido's predictions proved prophetic regarding a Premier League move for Marmoush, though to a different destination. The 26-year-old joined Guardiola's side from Eintracht Frankfurt last January for £59m, contributing to City's season finale and an FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.

Since his arrival, the forward has scored 10 goals and provided four assists across all competitions, totalling 42 appearances for the club. Now, he could be set for another January departure with north London as his likely destination.

Ange Postecoglou sent on fresh spying mission after new job took him to Arsenal - Daily Express
Description

Just one week after watching Arsenal in Champions League action, former Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou will be keeping a close eye on another Premier League team. Postecoglou has been busy in his new role as a UEFA technical observer, watching Arsenal win 3-1 away at Inter Milan last week. This Wednesday, he’ll be at the Parc des Princes to watch Newcastle United away to reigning champions Paris Saint-Germain. Both teams go into the game on 13 points, meaning the loser will likely face an extra play-off round if they want to make it into the last 16.

Per UEFA’s own description, ‘The UEFA Technical Observer Group will be monitoring UEFA's club competitions in depth, with stats and video assistance enabling them to deliver detailed reports on the latest developments in coaching which are shared among the footballing community to give a dynamic account of the state of the game’. Postecoglou is one of more than 20 football figures chosen for the role this season, along with the likes of Gareth Southgate, Roberto Martinez and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The technical observers pick the player of the match for each game they are assigned to, while also helping determine the player, young player, team and goals of the season.

Postecoglou’s official report on the Inter vs Arsenal game was shared on UEFA’s website. “[Gabriel] Jesus' alertness in the box gave Arsenal a cutting edge to complement their ability to create opportunities from various avenues,” he wrote.

“Both [of the Brazilian’s] goals were instinctive. The first was from a mis-hit shot that he was able to capitalise on and the second from a rebound off the crossbar. Both are a demonstration of a goalscorer's instincts as, while others are watching, he is anticipating an opportunity to score”

Postecoglou spent a brief spell in the dugout earlier this season with Nottingham Forest, taking charge of two Europa League matches during his time in charge at the City Ground. However, he lasted barely a month and has not returned to management since his sacking in October.

The Australian, who won the Europa League with Spurs last season and previously managed Celtic in the Champions League, will be watching another under-pressure manager in France this week. Newcastle boss Eddie Howe is not thought to be in immediate danger but a home defeat against Aston Villa on Sunday saw his team end the weekend in ninth, some five points outside the Premier League’s top four.

Newcastle sit seventh in the Champions League’s league phase, behind opponents Paris Saint-Germain on goal difference. Even if they lose on Wednesday, their current total of 13 points could be enough to see them seeded for the play-off round - last season there were five teams level on 13 points and two of those (including PSG) were seeded thanks to their goal difference.

Michael Carrick backed to manage Man Utd's rivals once Red Devils snub boss

Michael Carrick backed to manage Man Utd's rivals once Red Devils snub boss - Daily Express
Description

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has suggested that the club's previous experience with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will make them hesitant to offer Michael Carrick the permanent manager's role, despite his impressive start in charge. And the iconic former midfielder has been tipped to take the Tottenham job in future instead. Carrick, who was part of Solskjaer's coaching team, returned to Old Trafford this month on a contract until the end of the season following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

The ex-Middlesbrough boss, who left the Championship side by mutual consent over the summer, has hit the ground running, securing victories against Manchester City and Arsenal in his first two matches at the helm. The dramatic upturn in both performances and results under Carrick has already fuelled rumours that he could be a strong contender for the managerial position on a long-term basis.

However, Scholes believes that United may still be "scarred" by their decision to give Solskjaer the permanent job after a successful interim period, which could potentially affect Carrick's chances of a similar promotion.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad and The Football podcast, Scholes said: "He's come into the job now and it's been that bad for a year that it couldn't really get any worse so the pressure isn't really on you while you're interim manager. Once you take that job full-time, at the start of the season next year, let's say, all of a sudden you've got to be winning games straightaway.

"They will be scarred a little bit from the Ole [Gunnar Solksjaer] thing. If the Ole thing hadn't have happened then it would probably be more likely.

"But if Michael has got to go up against, say, Thomas Tuchel in the summer then there's only one winner if you're looking at coaching big clubs and winning big prizes so you can't really compete with that."

Nicky Butt echoed these sentiments and believes Carrick will recognise his chances of landing the United position on a permanent basis remain slim. "I think Michael is that bright and intelligent, he'll understand the job that he's got," Butt added.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"I can't ever imagine Michael going on the TV... maybe his last game if he's third or something like that... but up until then, he knows he's got a contract until the end of the season to get the club moving forward in the right direction for the next manager.

"He'll know that and I know Michael well, he won't be out there, he's not stupid enough to say, 'Yeah, I want the job', because that's not what he signed up to.

"His next job, if he wants to stay in football as a manager for another club, would be a good job if he does well here."

Scholes proceeded to suggest the prospect of Carrick potentially managing another of his previous clubs, Tottenham Hotspur, remarking: "It could be like a Tottenham manager from this [for Carrick]. It wouldn't surprise me."

Tottenham transfer news as £26m Omar Marmoush boost emerges and deal hits stumbling block - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a potential boost in their hopes of signing Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush before the end of the window. Spurs are one of the clubs to be linked with an interest in the player.

The Egyptian has struggled for regular game time for City this season, although he was back in the line-up for the Premier League clash against Wolves following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations. He was on the scoresheet in the side’s 2-0 win at the weekend.

The January arrival of Antoine Semenyo has added more competition to the squad and raised questions over Marmoush’s future at the Etihad Stadium.

Spurs, Aston Villa and Turkish side Fenerbahce have all been linked with an interest over the last few weeks. But Turkish publication Sabah has reported that the player himself would rather stay in the Premier League.

With Villa closing in on a move for former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham, it could give Spurs a chance to take the lead in the race. Fenerbahce are, however, said to be continuing their interest and are looking at a potential €30m (£26m) deal.

Amid the search for a new striker following injuries to both Dominic Solanke and Richarlison, there is also talk about potential exits at the other end of the pitch.

According to TuttoMercatoWeb (via Milan News), Milan sporting director Igli Tare has been in contact with Spurs over a potential January move for Radu Dragusin. The 23-year-old has made just two substitute appearances for the club since returning from a cruciate ligament tear in December.

The report says that Milan are keen to sort a loan deal with an option to buy in the summer included. But Spurs instead want to include an obligation to buy in any loan deal.

Description

Omar Marmoush would prefer to stay in the Premier League if he were to leave Manchester City in the January transfer window, according to reports. The 26-year-old has been linked with a move away from the Etihad Stadium since Antoine Semenyo's arrival.

Pep Guardiola bolstered his attack for the second half of the season with the £64million signing of Semenyo. The Ghana international has hit the ground running for the Citizens, scoring three goals in his first four games across all competitions.

It has left doubts over Marmoush's future at the club, although he scored on his return to the starting XI in Saturday's 2-0 win over Wolves. The forward has been linked with a move to Fenerbahce since the window opened, and reports in Turkey have provided an update on their interest.

Sabah have reported that Fenerbahce are locked in negotiations with City and are willing to offer €30m (£26m) to bring Spurs-linked Marmoush to the Super Lig. The report also states, however, that Marmoush would prefer to remain in the Premier League with Tottenham and Aston Villa keen, though a loan exit is preferred by the player.

With Villa close to finalising a move for Tammy Abraham, that could give Spurs the advantage to sign the forward this month, though Fenerbache's desire to strike a deal poses a serious threat.

Tottenham transfer news as deal in danger, £30m target books medical

Tottenham transfer news: Agreed deal on verge of collapse, £30m star has medical booked - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham Hotspur suffered a huge transfer blow on Sunday after Liverpool informed them they would sanction a deal for Andy Robertson. It emerged late last week that talks had been opened between both clubs as Thomas Frank sought to add some much-needed experience to his squad.

Robertson has started only four Premier League matches this season, having lost his place to Milos Kerkez and his contract is set to expire at the end of the season. However, it now appears the Scotland international will remain at Anfield at least until the end of the season.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

But with just a week to go until the window closes, and Frank still under pressure following Saturday's 2-2 draw with Burnley, Tottenham continue to be the subject of transfer news and gossip.

Spurs have already splurged on Conor Gallagher and Souza in January, but look set to miss out on a deal for Brazilian forward Rayan. A report from Brazil claimed last summer that talks with Vasco da Gama over a deal for the forward had taken place, with links persisting into January.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

However, it is now being reported by multiple outlets that Rayan has agreed personal terms with Bournemouth ahead of a proposed £30m transfer. The teenager is set to undergo a medical today.

Tottenham remain open to selling striker Alejo Veliz to Bahia – but the deal could collapse today. The forward, who Spurs accepted a £7.4m bid for, is currently on loan at Rosario Central, and Thomas Frank’s side did have a recall clause this month.

But it is now claimed that the clause is no longer valid, as Veliz has played 1,430 minutes so far this season. As a result, Spurs will need the 22-year-old and Rosario Central’s approval to terminate his loan deal.

But Bahia, according to journalist German García Grova, took matters into their own hands and made a formal offer to Rosario Central to terminate the loan agreement immediately. However, and this is the important part, the offer they have made expires today, meaning all parties face a race against time to get a deal completed.

Spurs, meanwhile, have already conceded 31 goals this season, more than most top-half teams, so it is little surprise to hear they have joined the race to sign AS Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Spurs, Chelsea and Bournemouth are thought to be keen, as well as Bayern Munich, on signing the 26-year-old. The report claims that the Serie A side, as of the middle of January, value the Belgium international at £60m.

Any deal involving Svilar is unlikely to take place until the summer, and the report also claims that current Spurs No.1 Guglielmo Vicario is 'of interest' to various Serie A clubs, which he could join in the summer following a difficult season.

Andy Robertson set for awkward Tottenham meeting after 'shocking' comments - Daily Express
Description

Andy Robertson could be heading for an uncomfortable reunion with Richarlison should the Liverpool defender seal his switch to Tottenham. The Reds left-back is in discussions with Spurs after becoming increasingly frustrated with his limited first-team chances under Arne Slot.

He potentially made his farewell Liverpool appearance after entering as a substitute during Saturday's 3-2 loss at Bournemouth. Robertson has engaged in several heated exchanges with Richarlison throughout the years, dating back to their Merseyside derby clashes during the Brazilian's time at Everton. Following one particular derby in October 2020, Robertson criticised both Richarlison and Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford for their tackles on Thiago and Virgil van Dijk, respectively. Pickford escaped punishment for his challenge on Van Dijk, which left the Dutch centre-back sidelined with injury early in the match. Richarlison wasn't as fortunate, receiving his marching orders for a reckless tackle on Thiago, who avoided serious harm as the encounter finished 2-2.

Robertson condemned Richarlison's tackle while discussing the officials' failure to penalise Pickford. He said: "The lads, when they came in at half-time, said it was a shocking challenge, so that's two they've done us with today.

"For me, it was the same as Richarlison's. The whistle had already gone and he went flying in. It's a red card. I can't comment on if Pickford's meant it or not. I think he's an honest lad and I don't think he would have.

Liverpool pull the plug on Andy Robertson's £5m Tottenham transfer after Arne Slot comment - Daily Express
Description

Liverpool have called off Andy Robertson's potential transfer to Tottenham. The left-back had been on the verge of a £5million January transfer window move to north London as his Anfield contract nears its end. Despite initial struggles from £40m summer signing Milos Kerkez, the Hungarian international's form has improved, leaving Robertson out of the team.

However, according to The Times, Liverpool have ceased all negotiations and will not entertain the idea of letting him go midway through the season. The Premier League heavyweights have informed Tottenham that they've been unable to secure a suitable replacement for the 31-year-old. This decision was made less than a day after Robertson was brought on as a substitute during Saturday's match against Bournemouth. Liverpool manager Arne Slot expressed his desire for the Scottish international to remain at the club beyond the January transfer window.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

He stated: "I think I need all of my players. I thought, let's bring Robbo in at half-time to make sure Milos [Kerkez] stays available for the rest of the season, because there are a lot of games to be played with the players that are available. I have to manage that, as well, because the last thing we need right now is another injury."

Robertson had been seeking consistent playing time ahead of the World Cup and looks set to end nine-and-a-half glittering years at Liverpool for a new challenge in the Premier League. Robertson – who has been linked with boyhood club Celtic – has lifted two Premier League titles and the Champions League as well as the FA Cup and the League Cup with the Reds.

Vice-captain Robertson was also told by skipper Virgil van Dijk to remain on Merseyside. Van Dijk said: "He's my vice-captain. Robbo is a very important member of our team and I want him to stay but whatever happens, let's see."

On the possibility of Robertson leaving before the window shuts, Slot told journalists: "What do you think my answer is going to be? Have I ever said anything about transfers in front of these microphones.

"My answer is always the same and it's quite boring to always give the same answer - we don't talk about transfers in public."

Liverpool had opened talks with Robertson recently about the prospect of signing a new contract. The veteran defender said this month: "We’ll see what happens. We’ve had chats now which will remain private. I've spoken to them and we’ll see what happens. Would I like to stay? Yes, but it’s a difficult question to ask. I’ve got five months left and we need to see the option to stay or if there’s options to go and things like that.

"I’ll sit down with my family and decide. After a stressful summer, I’m just trying to enjoy being a part of it, and being a Liverpool player. I wanted to qualify for the World Cup and thankfully we’ve managed to do that. I need to see what myself and my family wants moving forward."
