Rodri facing FA charges for explosive Man City rant after Tottenham draw - Daily Express
Description

Manchester City anchor man Rodri could be facing an FA charge and a potential suspension after implying that referees are biased against his team. The Ballon d'Or winner expressed his frustration with the officials following City's disappointing 2-2 draw against Tottenham on Sunday. The Spanish midfielder was incensed when Dominic Solanke's first goal for Tottenham was allowed, despite appearing to kick through the back of Marc Guehi's leg to score.

Even though VAR reviewed the incident, it concluded that no foul had been committed. Tottenham equalised and secured a surprising point, dealing a significant blow to City's title aspirations against Arsenal. City have recently had VAR decisions go against them in matches against Newcastle, Manchester United, and Wolves.

Rodri seemed to question the impartiality of the officials, insisting they 'have to be neutral'. The midfielder anchor stated: "I know we won too much and the people don't want us to win, but the referee has to be neutral. And for me, honestly, it's not fair.

"It's not fair because we work so hard in these situations, and now to make these decisions, we have to move on. Of course you need to come back, but at the end, when everything is finished, we are frustrated because it's so clear, the foul.

"He (Solanke) kicked the leg, and of course with the push of the action on the ball, the ball goes in. We have to pay attention to these little things, otherwise it's going to be difficult for everyone because this league is like this.

"It's about small details and everything counts, so I think this is a very tough day for us in this sense. Honestly, I never speak about referees. I respect their job massively, but they have to pay attention to these things. He's kicked the leg. It's so clear."

The FA are anticipated to take a dim view of Rodri's remarks - and may charge him with 'questioning the integrity of match officials'.

Losing Rodri to a potential ban would be a further setback for Guardiola. The midfielder is already unavailable for the club's next Champions League match, the first leg of their round of 16 tie.

City have secured just one victory in their last six league matches and now sit six points behind league leaders Arsenal. Guardiola's side are also still in contention for silverware on all four fronts but face a demanding fixture list in the coming weeks.

Tottenham stance on signing Raheem Sterling and striking late hijack deal with Chelsea - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are not looking to complete a move for Raheem Sterling following his exit from Chelsea. The former England international ended his time at Stamford Bridge earlier this month and is available on a free transfer.

Spurs have been linked with an interest in Sterling over the last few days. Pundit Paul Merson has urged the club to make a move for the winger.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Speaking on Sky Sports News, he said: “They need players in. Thomas Frank and Tottenham have been unlucky with Solanke, Kulusevski and Maddison all out.

"I would bring Sterling in. I think it’s a no-brainer on a free transfer. I really do.

“You don’t want to start bringing every Tom, Dick and Harry in to try and stay up.

"They just need one or two players in and get their players fit.”

However, Sky report that the club have no interest in any deal that would see Sterling come to the club. The 31-year-old spent last season on loan with Arsenal, but they decided not to make the move permanent in the summer.

Spurs have just a matter of hours to complete any late deals that they hope will help to turn their season around. TEAMTalk claims that Tottenham are considering making a late move for Chelsea centre-back Axel Disasi; however, that appears wide of the mark.

West Ham are also keen, with the defender said to be undergoing a medical at the London Stadium. A deal is not fully done, with some doubts over how much the player wants the move.

Doubts have been raised over Spurs’ reported interest, with Sky claiming that the club are not looking at the loan market for any signings between now and the deadline. Thomas Frank has outlined that he is keen to bring in players for a longer-term project instead of ‘stop gaps’.

"We are active, no doubt about that. If something happens, let’s see,” he said following the 2-2 draw with Man City.

Thomas Frank makes feelings clear on Tottenham transfer before window shuts

Thomas Frank makes feelings clear on Tottenham transfer before window shuts - Daily Express
Description

Thomas Frank is convinced that Dominic Solanke will force his way into England contention and Thomas Tuchel's plans ahead of the World Cup - but has no plans to let his fellow striker Randal Kolo Muani leave the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this month. Solanke has made his comeback following five months battling a nagging ankle injury and appears to have rediscovered his form with strikes in consecutive Champions League fixtures. It was the ex-Bournemouth forward's clinical finish in Frankfurt during midweek that secured Spurs' passage into the competition's last 16.

As Tottenham gear up to face Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday with Tuchel undoubtedly eager to observe the various England internationals in action, Frank reckons Solanke, who has earned three caps for his country, deserves consideration. "Of course it's for Thomas Tuchel and his staff to take that decision in the end. I think that Dom, 100 per cent fit, sharp and performing, should be in the mix," said the Dane.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"I don't know how many strikers, clear number nines, England want to bring, but he definitely should be in that mix. All his qualities are there to be selected for that."

Frank insists he hasn't established a goal target for Solanke for the rest of the campaign but suspects the striker has likely done so himself.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"I never do that. I think they do it themselves. I just analyse and try to improve the process every week in terms of training, getting in the right areas, video clips, things like that," the Spurs manager explained.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"Most strikers, the guys that score the most goals, are inside the 18-yard box scoring from small slide passes, crosses and cut backs and he is very good in those situations."

Tottenham's second goal in Wednesday evening's 2-0 victory in Germany came from Kolo Muani, who has been the subject of transfer speculation linking him with Juventus and potentially seeing his loan deal from PSG terminated early.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

The French forward has impressed in the Champions League this campaign with three goals and two assists across seven appearances, yet remains without a single goal contribution in 15 Premier League outings.

With his injury-depleted Tottenham squad in consideration, Frank left no room for ambiguity regarding the 27-year-old French international's future when questioned about keeping him.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"Yes. Next question!" the Danish boss declared, expressing hope that the ingenious backheel in Frankfurt against his previous club would prove a turning point for Kolo Muani's Tottenham career.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"I really hope this goal and the performance can give him some confidence to build from. His qualities and abilities, I always liked them. I think he gives us a different dimension.

"The first action inside the second minute against Frankfurt, where he is bursting through on the left-hand side... that one-v-one ability and pace is frightening.

"His goal is well taken, being in the right position inside the six-yard box on a ball headed back in the mix. Also his ability to go in behind. Hopefully, we're getting closer and closer.

"Sometimes you need the rhythm. He came with basically no pre-season, got injured, broke his jawbone and then he got a little bit up to pace, we are not being free-floating, all that. Hopefully now we are on the right end of things and he can be better."

David Moyes promises to keep breaking Premier League rule after Everton chaos

David Moyes promises to keep breaking Premier League rule after Everton chaos - Daily Express
Description

David Moyes unleashed his frustration at the footballing rules that resulted in him receiving a yellow card for celebrating Everton's dramatic late equaliser. The Toffees manager acknowledged his celebration resembled David Pleat's iconic pitch invasion at Manchester City in 1983, when Luton preserved their top-flight status.

The Scotsman's only disappointment about his impromptu sprint onto the turf was not executing a knee slide to maximise the value of his caution. Moyes said: "Yes, I got booked for that. Who wants to see managers getting booked for celebrating? We're killing it, that the managers can't leave their technical area. I mean, I don't think that I would dance around if the goal was in the 55th minute.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"But you know that shows they've got nothing about them at all. No thoughts about what football means to the managers. Sad, isn't it? I'm still shaking my head.

"If it happens again, yes I bloody will do it again. Actually, I think if I had been a bit more mobile, I might have done a knee slide."

Moyes expressed greater satisfaction witnessing birthday boy Beto seize the starring role, scoring a late equaliser against Brighton, after being relegated to Thierno Barry's backup in recent fixtures.

He added: "Everybody's been desperate for Beto to do well and he continues to work like a beast every day to try and improve himself, to try and make himself better. Sometimes in life, the harder you work, the luckier you get."

Three Tottenham players who could be offered in swap deal for Marmoush

Three Tottenham players who could be offered in swap deal for Man City's Omar Marmoush - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have three key players who could be involved in a swap deal with Manchester City for Omar Marmoush. Spurs are among several clubs reportedly interested in the Egyptian forward.

Marmoush has found regular playing time hard to come by at City, and his chances of breaking into the starting XI could be further reduced following the signing of Antoine Semenyo from Bournemouth. This has led to speculation linking him with moves to Aston Villa, Fenerbahce and Tottenham. According to Turkish outlet Sabah, Marmoush would prefer to stay in the Premier League, giving Villa and Spurs an advantage in any potential transfer negotiations.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

The arrival of Tammy Abraham at Villa Park could further enhance Thomas Frank's chances of landing Marmoush. The club may even consider offering a cash-plus-player deal to secure his services before Monday's transfer deadline. Here, Express Football has identified three Spurs players who could potentially make the switch to Manchester.

Micky van de Ven

Micky van de Ven has been attracting attention from several Premier League clubs recently. Liverpool have previously been linked with the defender, and Spurs boss Frank has admitted that securing a new contract for him has become a priority.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

However, despite being considered a "very important" player, the club might contemplate sending him to Manchester to strengthen their attacking options. At present, Dominic Solanke remains the club's sole fit striker, with Richarlison sidelined through injury.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Frank may choose to prioritise bolstering the attack rather than securing defensive stars. Van de Ven is a doubt for Spurs' Sunday afternoon fixture against City after a "minor" injury concern ruled him out of the Champions League encounter with Eintracht Frankfurt.

Radu Dragusin

Since recovering from a cruciate ligament injury in December, Radu Dragusin has featured for just six minutes in Premier League action for Spurs. The Romanian centre-back appeared briefly in the closing stages of December's victory over Crystal Palace and January's draw with Burnley.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Italian outfit Roma have been reported to be interested in the 23-year-old, with initial proposals suggesting a loan until the season's end. Dragusin's agent, Florin Manea, told Tele Radio Stereo that he was working to finalise the transfer, though nothing has come to fruition.

Speaking earlier in January, Manea said: "The decisive days will be between today and tomorrow. I'd like to avoid talking, but we hope to reach a conclusion in the negotiations with Roma."

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Spurs may consider using the unsettled defender as a bargaining chip with City in negotiations for Marmoush, particularly given the club's shortage of options at centre-back.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Kevin Danso

Considering City's defensive difficulties, Kevin Danso could be a potential candidate for Spurs to discuss with City as part of a swap arrangement for Marmoush. The 27-year-old initially arrived on loan last season before making his move permanent in the summer, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal in north London.

Renowned for his combative approach and capability to operate a high defensive line, Danso could prove an ideal fit for City even on a short-term basis.

The defender was poised to join Wolves in January 2025, but Spurs swooped in to secure the deal and bolster their defensive options. The Austria international appears content at the club, though with City mounting a title challenge, the lure of silverware could prove difficult to resist.

Tottenham denied deadline day transfer after 'direct talks' opened

Tottenham denied deadline day transfer after 'direct talks' opened and Thomas Frank update - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham's hopes of securing Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones appear to have been dashed after the Reds firmly rejected any possibility of his departure. Spurs were understood to have made enquiries about the homegrown talent earlier this month.

The Anfield outfit knocked back a loan proposal from Inter Milan submitted on Friday. The reigning Premier League champions have made it clear they will not permit a temporary exit for Jones, regardless of whether he commits to fresh terms on Merseyside.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Inter had been weighing up their options as they prepare for Davide Frattesi's potential switch to Nottingham Forest.

However, our sister publication, the Liverpool Echo, reports that Liverpool are adamant no players will be leaving Slot's squad during this window.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

The 25-year-old has featured 29 times in all competitions this season, contributing one assist. Jones has demonstrated his adaptability throughout the campaign, operating in central midfield whilst also filling in at right-back when required.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Manager Thomas Frank hasn't dismissed the prospect of Tottenham pursuing a loan addition before the window closes, though it seems Jones won't be that player. The north London outfit may seek additional cover given their lengthy injury list, which includes Mohammed Kudus, Rodrigo Bentancur, Lucas Bergvall, Dejan Kulusevski, James Maddison, Richarlison, Pedro Porro and Ben Davies.

Spurs have already secured the signatures of Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid for a cool £34.6million and promising 19-year-old left-back Souza from Santos for £13m. Frank has expressed his satisfaction with Spurs' ambition and won't be disheartened if another deal doesn't materialise.

"I said it, the club worked relentlessly to try to do the best they can to improve the squad, especially Johan, Fabio and Vinai and of course all the people behind them," Frank stated.

"I can promise that the Lewis family is super committed to this project. They want to do everything, and I would go against my rule, hopefully only once, that there's no doubt it's clear that the club wants to sign Semenyo. They did everything.

"I think that's a clear signal that the Lewis family is very committed. That's a big signing with finances and all that. So it's aligned with that.

"I mean it, we can't be too obsessed with short-term fix that's not helping on the long term, because if we don't do that, all the hard work we put in now can be limited for the future. And that's not that we (don't) want badly short-term success as well.

"That's the quality players we are looking for to improve the squad. And if we can't find that, then it's definitely better to take the right decision. It's not the same that we're just getting quality players going forward, because we all know it's not that easy.

"And I'm sure if we're not, for whatever reason, able to get another player in, or players in this window, then for the summer, it's a big summer ahead, and I'm sure we'll see big improvements there."

Marcus Rashford handed Man Utd lifeline as Michael Carrick wants him back

Marcus Rashford could revive Man Utd career as Michael Carrick keen to bring star back - Daily Express
Description

Michael Carrick is keen to bring Marcus Rashford back to Manchester United - should he be appointed as the club's next permanent manager. Carrick has enjoyed a fantastic start to his tenure as interim boss, having taken over from Ruben Amorim following his dismissal. The former midfielder has overseen just two matches, but has secured a couple of impressive wins against Manchester City and Arsenal.

This has already sparked suggestions that Carrick might be given the role permanently at the season's conclusion. Should that materialise, the Telegraph reports that he would be interested in welcoming Rashford back into the Old Trafford set-up. Rashford was frozen out by Amorim, who declared he would prefer to field the 63-year-old goalkeeping coach rather than the England striker. He moved to Aston Villa on loan at the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign, before switching to Barcelona for this season.

The La Liga heavyweights have the option to make the move permanent, with all indications pointing to them triggering the £26million clause. Nevertheless, Carrick, who featured alongside Rashford during his final playing years, still believes there's a role for him at his childhood club.

The same report indicates that the player himself would prefer to remain with Barcelona though, where he has netted nine goals and provided 12 assists thus far this season.

Following his midweek Champions League strike, Rashford acknowledged that adapting to manager Hansi Flick's playing philosophy has required significant adjustment. "I think for the front guys we have to put as much pressure on the ball as possible because the problem is when players have time on the ball to pick the passes and to see what our backline is doing," he explained.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"If they do have time then the backline have to adjust. But it's our way of playing, it brings an intensity to the game. I think when we play at this intensity it's difficult for teams to match us.

"For me it takes a little bit of learning to get used to because you can't let them rest on the ball. Whoever is closest to the ball always has to put pressure. So it's a little bit different to what I'd done before. But this is the style of defence we play and when it works it's really good."

Flick has consistently lavished praise on Rashford and suggested that the ultimate decision regarding his future will rest with sporting director Deco.

He commented: "Marcus' performances have been really good until now, so we have to manage it, but it's Deco's job to do things for next season.

"We have to wait. We have months to go. For me, of course with Marcus we have a player on the top level, but also with our situation, and what I appreciate a lot from him [is his desire to be here]." Regarding the January window, United appear poised to remain inactive, avoiding any significant signings with major departures also seeming unlikely.

Joshua Zirkzee had been rumoured to potentially return to Italy, but Carrick has indicated his desire for the player to stay at the club.

Managing Arsenal as Viktor Gyokeres axed and Eberechi Eze solution found

Managing Arsenal as Viktor Gyokeres axed and Eberechi Eze solution found - Daily Express
Description

Mikel Arteta and Arsenal are sitting pretty ahead of the 2025/26 run-in. Top of the Premier League table and through to the last-16 of the Champions League as league phase winners, Arsenal are still fighting strong in both domestic cups too.

If Arsenal play their cards right, they should deliver at least one piece of silverware between now and the end of the season, with the Gunners faithful beginning to get giddy about what could prove to be a historic season. But there’s still a long way to go, and as the pressure begins to ramp up, Express Sport have picked out three things Arteta ought to do if Arsenal are to end the campaign successful.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Eberechi Eze solution found for Arsenal

Arsenal need to be braver if they want to finish the season with at least one of the Premier League or Champions League, and to do so, they have to utilise Eberechi Eze more. The playmaker has impressed on occasion, most notably his hat-trick in the north London derby, but has been used sparingly since the festive period. Eze is just the sort of player Arsenal need to be getting on the ball in central areas, which would require a midfield shuffle, but in the long run could be worth it.

Take the handbrake off and be brave

The defeat to Manchester United was the latest example of Arsenal playing within themselves this season. A timid and tame set of players, who looked more scared to make a mistake than take the game to a relatively mediocre United side. Arsenal are currently the best team in Europe, it’s high time they started acting like it. Stop relying on corners and own goals, and actually step onto the pitch looking to win football matches with conviction. They’re more than good enough!

Having a player capable of putting the ball in the back of the net would help. It hasn’t been a bad season for Viktor Gyokeres, but it certainly hasn’t been a good one either. And now, with Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz back fit and firing, Gyokeres could be finding minutes even harder to come by. It could prove for the better, given Arsenal look a better outfit when it is one of Jesus or Havertz up top.

Tottenham transfer news: Striker move confirmed as Real Madrid ‘contact’ emerges - Daily Express
Description

Clubs, including Tottenham Hotspur have now just a matter of days to complete late transfer business in the January window as the race to add to squads is now well and truly on.

The window slams shut at 7pm on Monday, 2nd February with the scramble for signings starting over the weekend. Spurs have already been busy in the window in terms of both incomings and outgoings.

The club have completed the signings of midfielder Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and full-back Souza from Santos. One of the priorities for Spurs in the final days will be to try and add attacking reinforcements.

For Thomas Frank, concentration will be on the weekend’s Premier League clash against Manchester City at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Spurs host PEp Guardiola’s side in the 4.30pm kick-off on Sunday.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

But, even while the action is ongoing, there is likely to be work going on behind the scenes on potential deals. With that in mind, here is a look at some of the latest talk from in and around the club.

Striker transfer confirmed

Spurs have confirmed that young striker Dane Scarlett has joined Scottish side Hibernian on loan until the end of the season. The move comes just days after the 21-year-old came off the bench as a late substitute in the 2-0 Champions League win over Eintracht Frankfurt.

He has, however, found regular game time hard to come by this season, with him making just five first team appearances in all competitions.

The deal could potentially hint at more attacking reinforcements coming in at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the final days of the transfer window.

Commenting on the arrival, Hibs head coach, David Gray said: "Dane is a player with real talent, fantastic attributes and he will provide a genuine goal threat in the forward areas of the pitch with his pace, athleticism and technique.

"We are delighted to bring Dane into the building and we are all looking forward to working with him over the next six months."

The laon deal is Scarlett’s third temporary move away from Spurs since 2022, with previous spells at Portsmouth, Ipswich Town and Oxford United.

Real Madrid ‘contact’

Spurs are one club to be been contacted over a possible move for Real Madrid winger Brahim Diaz in the final days of the transfer window, according to TEAMtalk.

Diaz impressed with his performances for Morocco in the Africa Cup of Nations over the festive period, but has found himself on the fringes since his return to Madrid from the competition. His representatives are therefore said to be reaching out to clubs over a possible January move.

Tottenham set for huge financial boost days before transfer window closes

Tottenham set for huge financial boost days before transfer window closes - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham have received a substantial financial boost just days before the January transfer window closes. The north London club secured an eight-figure windfall on Wednesday evening after confirming automatic qualification to the Champions League last 16.

Dominic Solanke's strike propelled Thomas Frank's side to victory over Eintracht Frankfurt at the Deutsche Bank Park, earning three vital points in the battle for a top-eight finish. Spurs ultimately claimed fourth spot, bypassing the knockout phase play-offs and significantly boosting their coffers.

As with every Champions League participant, UEFA awarded Spurs £16.18m simply for taking part. Tottenham accumulated an additional £10.31m through performance-related bonuses, having secured five wins (£1.82m each) and two draws (£607k each) from their eight matches.

UEFA also provides £239,000 for each final league position, meaning they collected a further £7.89m. Additionally, clubs finishing in the top eight and progressing straight to the last 16 receive extra compensation, earning Spurs £9.56m for their achievement.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

In total, Frank has generated £43.94m in prize money for the club. The Danish manager has already brought in several new signings to Hotspur Way this month, acquiring Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid and Souza from Santos, making this financial injection particularly timely.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Despite already splashing nearly £50m, Frank has disclosed that he's still on the hunt to strengthen his squad before next week's deadline. He shared: "We are 100 per cent in the market.

"I think that when let's say results are not top and you get injuries, that's where you can feel you are being pressured to take decisions that you maybe don't want to take for the future.

"But we need to make good assessments, good analysis, where we are making good decisions that can help us get short-term success, optimise that, but also be very good for the long-term."

At the end of December, Frank pledged that Tottenham will only sign 'fully committed' players. The 52-year-old said: "Key, in every aspect. Any player we sign needs to be fully committed on the project. No doubt about that. Very important.

"Character for me, as I've said many times, is the most important thing. They need to buy into it so we are aligned. It makes it easier for me to say, 'Hey remember the bit I said about this...', then it's a little bit easier to have consequences."
