Description

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur will clash at the San Mames Stadium in Bilbao tonight, with Europa League glory at stake. Ruben Amorim and Ange Postecoglou have the opportunity to salvage something from their disastrous seasons by lifting unlikely silverware and qualifying for the Champions League.

Tottenham haven't competed in a major final since falling short against Liverpool to miss out on the Champions League in 2019. Meanwhile, United are entering their fourth final in three years, having clinched the League Cup in 2023 before back-to-back FA Cup finals against Manchester City. With the stage set in the Basque Country, it's worth taking a look at the basic order of things both teams face.

Express Sport runs through the brief rules for the Europa League final...

The Team Sheets

Each club must submit their team sheet at least 75 minutes before kick-off in Bilbao.

They must confirm up to 23 players and 15 team officials, one of whom must be a team doctor.

If there are fewer than seven players on either team, the match will be suspended or cancelled. Luckily, neither Amorim's nor Postecoglou's injury woes have been that bad.

The Match

The final is being played as one single match at a neutral and predetermined stadium, rather than the two-legged format of the previous knockout rounds.

If there is no separating United and Spurs after normal time, they will play two 15-minute periods of extra time.

In this case, the players will remain on the pitch during a five-minute break between full-time in normal time and extra-time kick-off.

The Europa League final will be determined by a penalty shoot-out if there is still no winner after 30 minutes of extra time.

Substitutions

Up to five of the substitutes named in each team's matchday squad can take part in the match. If the match goes to extra time, a sixth substitute can be introduced.

Both teams can stop the game a maximum of three times to make substitutes, plus one extra stoppage in the case of a sixth change after normal time.

Substitutions made before the match, during half-time, between full-time and the start of extra time and half-time of extra time don't use one of the four stoppages.

Should a player named in either starting line-up suffer an injury or illness before kick-off, they can be replaced by a registered player not previously listed in the squad.

Referees

VAR and goal-line technology will be in operation for the final, as it has been throughout the Europa League campaign.

Germany's Felix Zwayer has been appointed the referee, with compatriots Robert Kempter and Christian Dietz his assistants.

Maurizio Mariani and Daniele Bindoni of Italy have been appointed the fourth official and reserve assistant referee.

Bastian Dankert will act as the VAR, assisted by fellow German Benjamin Brand. Spain's Carlos del Cerro Grande will be on VAR support duty.

Tottenham trophy parade details: Date, time and route if Spurs win Europa League - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham are gearing up for a potential trophy celebration through the streets of north London, with plans for a parade if they topple Manchester United in the upcoming Europa League final.

Spurs and United both stumbled in their latest Premier League bouts on Friday, with Spurs knocked back by a 2-0 defeat at Aston Villa and United dropping points in a 1-0 loss to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, positioning them in 16th and 17th ahead of the weekend's matches, and facing their worst finishing spots in league history.

While Spurs have dreams of glory and parades, having not tasted European success since 1984, their next opponents, Manchester United, plagued by a disappointing season and financial woes, are taking a more subdued approach should they reign victorious; planning merely a casual barbeque rather than any grand festivities following the Bilbao-based final.

In stark contrast, Tottenham has eyes set on ending their drought, pending a glittering victory in San Mames, as they reach out to the local community with warm announcements: "Dear Neighbour, we hope this finds you well.

Description

Manchester United and Tottenham fans fought on the streets of Bilbao in horrifying scenes ahead of the Europa League final tonight. Videos shared on social media show objects being launched across a narrow road in the Spanish city as terrified locals watch on.

A video taken by a resident high up on a balcony clearly shows United and Spurs fans clashing. In the clip, boxes and other items are sent flying into the opposing groups, who were positioned at each end of the street. There were frequent chants of “United!” and lots of inaudible shouting. Towards the start of the video, one individual appears to be knocked over by a stray cardboard box, before he is quickly helped to his feet.

Missiles continue to be thrown between the two groups. As one person struggles to lift a wheelie bin and toss it back up the road, there are sarcastic cheers from the rival group.

Some locals appear to emerge from their apartments in an effort to stop the trouble. Many are seen picking up items that have been thrown between the two sets of fans, but their efforts to quell the tension are to no avail.

One of the items tossed between the two groups appears to be a white metal cuboid frame.

The group at the top of the road then seem to make ground on the set of fans at the bottom. Some individuals can be heard shouting “Stop!” but others respond: “You stop!”

Towards the end of the clip, two individuals in black nearly come to blows but are separated by a man wearing a white t-shirt. There are dozens of people involved in the chaos when and how is started. The clip finishes before the conflict ends.

There do not appear to be any serious injuries suffered while the fighting is captured on film.

Tensions spilled over with both clubs hoping to end disastrous seasons with a European trophy. United have failed to arrest their poor start to the campaign under Erik ten Hag, with Ruben Amorim unable to improve their performances since his appointment in November.

Spurs were derailed by a sweeping injury crisis midway through the season but Ange Postecoglou has not been able to rekindle their form with many of their key players now back. United are 16th in the Premier League with Spurs 17th.

Manchester United and Tottenham clash in the Europa League final for a rare slice of glory tonight. Both teams have endured shocking Premier League campaigns, with the European competition presenting their only chance of success this season.

United are 16th in the top-flight while Spurs are a place below. Both teams and their respective managers have come under mounting pressure to restore form. Ruben Amorim has struggled after replacing Erik ten Hag in November, while some reports suggest that Ange Postecoglou may leave even if Spurs win their first European trophy since the 1984 UEFA Cup.

That has not been confirmed but it underlines just how challenging a season this has been for both sides. However, all is not lost and victory in today’s Bilbao showdown would earn one club qualification for next season’s Champions League. There are also significant financial bonuses, which may be useful in the summer transfer window as both clubs look to improve their squads.

How much will Man Utd and Tottenham earn from winning the Europa League?

United have already earned £26.6million from their success in the Europa League so far, while Spurs have banked £26.5m. The slight difference is because the Red Devils drew one more game and finished a place higher in the league phase.

Winning the Europa League final would guarantee the victorious team an additional £20.9m. A little over £5m of that figure is from winning the match itself. The remaining £15.9m that the winner will receive is for qualifying for the league phase of next season’s Champions League.

Playing in next season’s Champions League would present further opportunities to make millions. This term, drawing a league phase match earned teams £589,000. A win would see them bank £1.8m. That is in addition to the lucrative broadcast revenues and gate receipts.

Both teams desperately need the financial rewards provided by winning the Europa League and qualifying for the Champions League. Their respective underperformances in the Premier League mean they will not receive as much money as they might have done in previous seasons.

The difference in prize money per position in the Premier League is an average of around £2m. United and Spurs will therefore earn much less than those who place in the top half of the division, with their European exploits providing much-needed revenue.

The Europa League final is poised to be a thrilling all-Premier League showdown between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United. Despite underwhelming performances in the league, both teams have a golden chance to salvage their season with a trophy and a spot in next year's Champions League.

Earlier this campaign, Spurs manager Ange Postecoglou declared his knack for securing silverware in his second season at the helm, and he's just one match away from making good on that promise at Tottenham. The north London club's last taste of glory was the 2008 League Cup, and lifting the Europa League trophy would mark their first European success since 1984.

On the other hand, United boss Ruben Amorim has also faced challenges since taking over from Erik ten Hag, with the Red Devils sitting just a point above Spurs in 16th place. However, a win against the Londoners would guarantee United's participation in the Champions League next season and ensure a third consecutive year of silverware for the Old Trafford outfit. Here's your complete guide to watching the highly anticipated Spurs vs United clash in the Europa League final.

Europa League final kick off time

The Europa League final between Spurs and United is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21. The match will kick off at 8pm.

Europa League final TV slot

TNT Sports is set to dedicate significant airtime to the Europa League final. The pre-match build-up between Spurs and United will commence at 6pm, two hours before kick-off.

A crucial game for both clubs, TNT Sports' post-match coverage is slated to last until 11pm. This also accounts for the potential of extra time and a penalty shootout.

In such a case, the TV slot may be extended beyond 11pm to cover the celebrations and interview those involved in the final.

Europa League final team news

Due to the specific squad rules of the Europa League, Spurs players Radu Dragusin, Timo Werner, Fraser Forster and Antonin Kinsky were never going to participate in the final as they were omitted from the club's squad for the knockout rounds. However, Tottenham manager Postecoglou has other concerns to address.

James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski have been hit by injuries in recent weeks, with the latter already having undergone surgery. Young midfielder Lucas Bergvall is another significant absentee who is not expected to feature in Bilbao, despite making headway in his recovery.

Spurs were handed a fresh injury concern in their loss to Aston Villa last Friday, as Pape Matar Sarr sustained a knock that puts him in doubt for the final. Meanwhile, Dane Scarlett will not be included in Postecoglou's plans as he is also recuperating from surgery.

For United, defender Lisandro Martinez and forward Joshua Zirkzee have been struck with season-ending ACL and hamstring injuries, respectively. The majority of the club's other fitness concerns revolve around their defence.

Matthijs de Ligt made a comeback against Brentford earlier this month, but has not played again since being substituted due to a knee injury. Fellow centre-back Leny Yoro recently recovered from a broken foot, but seemed to worsen the same area in United's loss to West Ham. Meanwhile, Diogo Dalot is making progress in his recovery, but Amorim is unlikely to risk playing the full-back.

Europa League final trophy parade

Both clubs may have had similarly frustrating seasons outside of European competition, but they plan to celebrate a potential Europa League victory in distinctly different ways. It has been reported that United will not hold an open-top bus parade if they triumph, but will instead host a barbecue for players and staff.

United will have little time to bask in the glory of potential silverware, as they wrap up their Premier League season at home against Aston Villa on Sunday, May 25, before jetting off for a post-season tour in Kuala Lumpur. The last time United fans saw an open-top bus parade was after clinching the 2013 Premier League title. There were no public festivities when the club triumphed in the Europa League under Jose Mourinho in 2017.

On the other hand, Spurs are expected to hold a parade if they manage to break their 17-year trophy drought. The north London club have lost four cup finals, including the 2019 Champions League, since they last hoisted a trophy.

Europa League final odds

Spurs are seen as slight favourites (2/1) to win the match in normal time over United (6/4), according to Oddschecker. The draw is pegged at 12/5, which could result in extra time and potentially a penalty shootout.

In terms of an outright winner, United are thought to have a slight advantage at 4/5 while Spurs are priced at evens.

Man Utd starting XI to face Tottenham decided as new striker named

Manchester United have headed to Bilbao to take on Tottenham in the Europa League final on Wednesday night. Ruben Amorim has many selection headaches to decide, knowing a win could transform his summer transfer plans thank to the extra funds and the lure of Champions League football.

The Red Devils were handed a triple injury boost as they jetted out to Spain on Tuesday afternoon, with Joshua Zirkzee, Leny Yoro and Diogo Dalot returning to training.

So who will Amorim select in his starting XI? Express Sport writers have given their take on United's strongest options...

Mikael McKenzie

Even if Amad is only 25% fit I would throw him straight into the starting XI. He is United's biggest attacking threat and needs to play as advanced as possible. Having Mazraoui in the rwb slot instead of cb will give Amad even more freedom to attack.

A midfield two of Fernandes and Casemiro provides the experience and class to keep out Tottenham's injury-wrecked midfield.

There is a big headache up front with Hojlund struggling and Zirkzee injured, so I'd gamble and play Mount through the middle. He's a clever player who won't stop running. If Amad and Garnacho can get to the byline and pull some balls back, I'd back Mount to fidn the space to finish.

Charlie Malam

The big question is... to start Hojlund or not? Given the lack of alternatives, Amorim may have to. Mainoo hasn’t worked as a false nine and deploying Fernandes in that role doesn't get the best out of United's MVP. So Hojlund starts - but not exactly on merit.

Yoro has to start if fit but Shaw replaces him if not. Ugarte is another contentious pick but he allows Fernandes to feature further up. If that doesn’t work, the option is always there to drop Fernandes deeper and bring on Mount. The trickery and pace of Amad and Garnacho down the same side could be too much for Tottenham to cope with and also free up more space for Fernandes and Dorgu on the other side of the pitch.

Jack McEachen

Injury and fitness doubts remain over the likes of De Ligt, Yoro, and Amad, but Amorim should be brave and leave the lacklustre Hojlund out of his starting XI. Including Amad at wingback could add some much-needed firepower, allowing Mazraoui to use his ball-playing out from the back and take the game to Tottenham.

A midfield of Casemiro and Ugarte lacks progression, but including Mainoo in a fluid role further forward, where he has impressed, and shifting Mazraoui to the back three could combat that issue. Romero and Van de Ven would make light work out of Hojlund.

Maddison, Kulusevski and Bergvall are all likely out of the final and United have a chance to dominate the midfield with Casemiro, Ugarte, Mainoo and Fernandes overpowering their opposite numbers.

The Bilbao final could be won in moments and having as many game-changing talents on the pitch as possible may just save United's season.

Sam Smith

United have the edge in terms of personnel, particularly if Yoro is passed fit to play after limping off against West Ham with a foot injury. Casemiro and Mount have found form and fitness at exactly the right time.

Amorim has often felt uneasy about using Fernandes as one of his two central midfielders, but he must take the risk against a Spurs midfield that will be more conservative than Ange Postecoglou might like.

Injuries to Maddison, Kulusevski and Bergvall leave the Australian with few options other than a flat middle trio of Bentancur, Bissouma and Sarr. United must seek to dominate this area of the pitch, potentially with a centre-back stepping into midfield alongside Casemiro on occasion.

Amos Murphy

Against all odds, the side two places above the Premier League relegation zone will be facing off against the only non-relegated team below them in a European final. Regardless, United have a solid shot at winning the trophy.

We're likely to see a similar side to the one that helped United to the final, with Luke Shaw coming in for the injured Leny Yoro at LCB. Getting Bruno Fernandes as high up as the pitch as possible could be key to United beating Spurs, while Hojlund, despite his limitations, can still make himself a handful at the tip of attack.

Ange Postecoglou makes emphatic comment over Tottenham future with job on the line - Daily Express
Description

Ange Postecoglou has insisted he won't walk away from Tottenham regardless of the result in their Europa League final with Manchester United. The future of the Aussie boss appears on the line ahead of the game in Bilbao, with Spurs looking to salvage an otherwise wretched season.

The club are 17th in the table, and have already been confined to their worst ever Premier League finish. Their domestic form has led to speculation that the ex-Celtic man could depart this summer regardless of the outcome on Wednesday. However, in his pre-match press conference, he hit back at suggestions he will walk away if his team secures a European trophy.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"No, I don't think my job is done here," he replied, when asked if the clash would be his last in charge. "I think a trophy would accelerate that and I think there's a lot still to be done. I still think there is a lot of work to be done.

"That is quite obvious with the challenges we've had this year, but I think there is some reasoning in the context of that but also there has been some growth that I would like to see through. Whether that happens or not, that's not important right now but I don't think this job is finished."

Postecoglou, 59, has endured a spiky relationship with the media this season. Indeed, he hit out at one reporter who suggested he was at risk of 'ridicule' if Spurs were beaten in Spain.

"That depends on your outlook but I'll tell you one thing, irrespective of tomorrow, I'm not a clown and never will be," he said. "You really disappointed me that you used such terminology.

"You're describing a person that for 26 years, without any favours from anyone, has worked his way to a position where he is leading out a club in a European final. For you to suggest that somehow us not being successful means that I'm a clown, I'm not sure how to answer that question."

Postecoglou is aiming to become the first manager to lead Spurs to a major trophy since they won the League Cup under Juande Ramos in 2008. The club's last European title came in the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1984.

Amorim believes reaching the final alone isn't a good enough achievement. He explained: "Something that I learned as a player is you need to win. Nobody is going to say 'I was a finalist', especially in this kind of club. So we need to win the final.

"It's really important, massive for us, and we want to give that to our fans. It's a mixed feeling. I'm really excited but, at the same time, I know my responsibility as a Manchester United coach. I have always that feeling of frustration for the season, so I want really bad to help the team to win this final. We've got to give something to the club, to the fans, to the staff, to everybody."

On the power of the supporters, he added: "It's hard. It's not enough, winning the Europa League. It's not enough for all the support the fans gave us this season. They will go swimming [to Bilbao] if needed to, even without a ticket! I already know. A big thank you for everything they did during the season. We will do our best to give something to them."

More than just a trophy is riding on the result for United, given the Europa League represents their last shot at qualifying for next season's Champions League. The 20-time English champions sit 16th in the Premier League table, having lost 18 of their 37 matches so far this term. Following Wednesday's clash against Spurs, United will round their campaign off with a home match against Aston Villa on Sunday afternoon.

Europa League final LIVE: Tottenham vs Man Utd branded 'scandalous' as complaint issued - Daily Express
Description

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur supporters booking last-minute trips to the Europa League final are being charged thousands of pounds.

Direct return flights from the UK to Bilbao in northern Spain cost from more than £1,000, hotel rooms are at least £1,200, while match tickets are available on resale websites from about £500.

The final kicks off at 9pm local time (8pm BST) on Wednesday.

EasyJet is charging £1,823 to fly from Gatwick to Bilbao on Wednesday morning and return on Thursday morning. A return trip from Heathrow with British Airways - out on Wednesday morning, back on Thursday afternoon - costs £1,288.

Spanish airline Vueling is offering flights from Gatwick on Tuesday night, returning on Thursday night, for £1,179. A return trip on the same route a week later is available from just £116.

Tickets for the match at the San Mames Stadium are being sold on marketplace Ticombo from about £500. Some Man Utd and Spurs supporters were able to buy tickets through official channels from just £34.

The cheapest hotel rooms in central Bilbao on the night of the match are being sold on Booking.com for about £1,200. That is compared with £78 on Thursday night.

Airline pricing is generally driven by demand, with fares rising for a flight as more seats are filled. Booking.com, which does not control the pricing of accommodation listed on its website, previously urged providers to "act fairly".

Former Manchester United defender Paul Parker has blasted both teams in the Europa League final for their miserable campaigns.

He insists that victory in Bilbao offers little relief because of their disasters in domestic competitions, though he does think that the Red Devils will edge Tottenham on the night.

He told Betfred: “The players from both sides have a lot to prove to their fans and themselves, so whichever side wins it, in theory they should hang their heads in shame because they’ve let themselves down domestically and that’s what’s important.

"Tottenham have beaten them three times already this season, so can they beat them four times? I don’t believe one side could beat a team four times in a season, especially when you’re talking about Manchester United.

"Look at Celtic and Rangers, are we saying that one of those sides is going to beat the other four times in a season? Manchester United can’t let this happen, so for that reason I’m going to say Manchester United will win it.”

Both sets of travelling supporters have hit out at the "scandalous" nature of getting to Bilbao and stopping overnight.

Flights have been raised by thousands of pounds from England to the Spanish area, forcing some to travel by boat, while accommodation prices have gone through the roof. Some hostels cost in the region of £550 per night.

One Manchester United fan, Dale O'Donnell, told the Independent: “Planning the trip was made difficult by the scandalous pricing of direct flights and limited accommodation. We looked at all the routes, before deciding to fly to Bordeaux. We’ll leave in the early hours after the game.”

Barney Chilton of the Red News fanzine added: “There is profiteering everywhere but, with so little time to book, it’s just wrong that this happens every final. I’m not sure what Uefa can do, but surely something. The majority get royally done over just wanting to see their team in a rare European final.”

Several complaints have been raised that Bilbao is not equipped to handle a final of such magnitude, with 80,000-plus fans expected to make the trip from England.

James Maddison has been named in the Tottenham Hotspur squad travelling to Bilbao for the Europa League final against Manchester United. In a video shared on the club's social media platforms, 21 players were seen boarding the bus en route to their flight to Bilbao on Monday evening.

Despite manager Ange Postecoglou previously stating that Maddison would be out for the rest of the season due to a knee injury, he was spotted among the travelling party.

Several senior players including Son Heung-Min, Micky van de Ven, Cristian Romero and Dominic Solanke were also part of the travelling team, alongside young talents Callum Olusesi, Damola Ajayi, Mikey Moore, Dane Scarlett and Will Lankshear.

Matthys Tel, who chose to sign with Spurs over United from Bayern Munich during the January transfer window, was also included in the travelling squad.
