Tottenham's four options to replace Thomas Frank after dramatic late West Ham suckerpunch - Daily Express
Description

It was the latest in a long line of disappointing results for Thomas Frank as Tottenham boss on Saturday afternoon. After taking the lead against struggling West Ham, the 2025 Europa League winners slipped to a humiliating defeat against their London rivals, leaving Frank on the brink of the sack.

Frank was ushered in to replace the sacked Ange Postecoglou following the triumph in Bilbao, but it looks as if Spurs could be on the lookout for yet another new coach. If that proves to be the case, Express Sport have picked out four potential options to take over from the Dane.

Mauricio Pochettino

They say never go back to an ex, but Mauricio Pochettino might be the perfect antidote to Spurs’ current problems. In truth, he’s been the only manager in recent memory to galvanise the north Londoners across several seasons, and the Argentine carries plenty of credit following his first stint in charge. The only roadblock here is that Tottenham would likely have to wait until the summer, given Pochettino is gearing up to lead the USA into a home World Cup.

Oliver Glasner

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Spurs couldn’t, could they? Oliver Glasner announced his intention to step down as Crystal Palace manager following the expiration of his contract at the end of the season. He cited wanting a “new challenge” as his reason, and there are few tasks bigger than the Tottenham job right now. The Austrian has been linked with the vacant Manchester United role, but what if Spurs sneaked in first?

Enzo Maresca

What a heel turn this would be. From west London to north London, and just imagine if Enzo Maresca turned out to be the man who brought a new era of success to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. A broken relationship with the board was cited as a reason for the Italian’s exit earlier this month, and while the Spurs hierarchy has plenty of critics itself, Maresca would likely be given more license to build the team as he sees fit.

Marco Silva

And finally, probably the most likely appointment if Spurs were to go chasing a new manager mid-season. Marco Silva has done a stellar job at Fulham, but it feels as if there’s not much further the Portuguese tactician can take the Cottagers. In his late forties, it feels like now could represent the right opportunity for Silva to leave Fulham and make the step up to one of the Premier League’s biggest teams.

Tottenham player ratings vs West Ham: 3/10 and 4/10 dished out as Thomas Frank faces sack - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham suffered a 2-1 defeat to West Ham in the Premier League on Saturday, and here are our Spurs player ratings following the London derby loss. Thomas Frank made three changes to his squad from the FA Cup exit to Aston Villa, with new recruit Conor Gallagher, fresh off his £34.7million transfer from Atletico Madrid, immediately included in the line-up.

But a disastrous 10 seconds just 15 minutes into the first half set the tone for the game. Ben Davies sustained what appeared to be a severe injury to his left leg, instantly signalling to the bench, before Cyrsencio Summerville cut inside Pedro Porro and Gallagher to strike a shot that ricocheted in off Micky van de Ven.

Spurs managed to equalise when Cristian Romero headed in Pedro Porro's cross, but they failed to secure the victory. Instead, it was the visitors who clinched the win when substitute Callum Wilson scrambled the ball into the net during added time, marking West Ham's first league win in 11 games.

Here are our Spurs player ratings...

Guglielmo Vicario

Despite not being able to prevent Summerville's deflected goal, he made an impressive save to deny Soucek's chested effort and another to push away Mavropanos' header. He claimed he was held during the corner from which Wilson scored, but he appeared weak.

This marred what had otherwise been a performance with some significant saves. 5.

Pedro Porro

Summerville easily outplayed him for the goal and caused him numerous problems. However, the Spaniard delivered a superb cross for Romero to head home and made a crucial late block to deny Wilson, only for the same player to score from the resulting corner, which boosted his score. 6.

Cristian Romero

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

He received his eighth yellow card of the season but compensated for it with a powerful header to equalise in the second half. 7.

Micky van de Ven

An unfortunate deflection for Summerville's goal, which he wouldn't have seen coming. Made a vital last-minute block to deny Summerville shortly before Romero's equaliser.

He looked devastated at the final whistle. 7.

Ben Davies

He only lasted 15 minutes before suffering what seemed to be a serious left leg injury. N/A.

Conor Gallagher

Involved in a head clash just 15 seconds into the game, but managed to shake it off. He brought energy to the match, but his involvement in Summerville's goal was disappointing.

Despite giving his all in the second half, it was to no avail. 6.

Archie Gray

Made some robust challenges and embarked on a few powerful runs. Received a yellow card and sustained an injury in the first half, which meant he didn't return after the interval. 6.

Wilson Odobert

Had a header (shoulder) saved by Areola from close quarters. Did very little else and should have been substituted instead of Tel. 4.

Xavi Simons

Managed to appear threatening one moment and then struggled to beat a man in the next. Needs to take control of games but fails to do so. 5.

Mathys Tel

Appeared dangerous down the left and delivered the cross that led to Odobert's saved header. He also sent a shot just past the right-hand post in the first half.

Continued to be the best of Spurs' underperforming front line only to be surprisingly replaced by Solanke, much to his and the crowd's disappointment. 6.

Randal Kolo Muani

At times, you could have forgotten he was even playing. He occasionally produces a good moment and then fades into the background again.

Doesn't attack the ball as a striker should. 3.

Substitutes

Djed Spence

Received a telling off from Frank after Davies went down injured as he wasn't ready to come on. Had an opportunity shortly after coming on with Areola saving his follow-up from Odobert's header.

Didn't contribute much offensively otherwise. 5.

Yves Bissouma

He rolled back the years with a lively performance after coming on at half-time for his first minutes of the season. He made some good interceptions and took a few shots at goal.

However, he botched his jump, leaving Wilson unmarked in the box for the shot that led to West Ham's late corner goal. 7.

Dominic Solanke

He got about half an hour but didn't see much of the ball. 5.

Tottenham star given oxygen and stretchered off in devastating injury worry vs West Ham - Daily Express
Description

Ben Davies was given oxygen and stretchered off the pitch during the first half of Tottenham's match against West Ham, following a collision with Jarrod Bowen. The 32-year-old defender seemed to have injured his left leg. Davies was carried off and replaced by Djed Spence. The extent of his injury is yet to be determined, with an update expected from Thomas Frank after the game.

The Welsh international, whose contract in north London expires at the end of this season, has only recently returned to play after a prolonged absence due to injury. But he had his leg in a brace after physios rushed onto the pitch following an attempt to tackle Bowen.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

To make matters worse for the full-back, he was also shown a yellow card by referee Jarred Gillett as he left the pitch.

Davies, 32, sustained a hamstring injury in October, causing him to miss five crucial matches against Aston Villa, Everton, Chelsea, Manchester United, and Arsenal.

He rejoined the squad towards the end of November, featuring on the bench in a 2-1 loss to Fulham. Davies made his first appearance of the season in the Champions League, coming on as a substitute.

In a commanding 3-0 victory over Slavia Praha, Davies was given around 20 minutes of playtime towards the end of the match. A few days later, he was again brought on as a substitute in a disappointing 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest in the Premier League.

More pressure piled onto Spurs boss Frank, with protests taking place outside the ground before kick-off, as they went 1-0 down to strugglers and London rivals West Ham.

Crysencio Summerville, one of the top performers in the first half, saw his deflected strike fly past Guglielmo Vicario only moments before Davies' injury.

Tottenham about to sell a player Messi predicted to be 'next Suarez'

Tottenham are about to sell a player Lionel Messi predicted to be 'next Luis Suarez' - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly exploring a permanent exit for striker Alejo Veliz - a player Lionel Messi once admitted reminded him of Luis Suarez. The Athletic report that a fee for Veliz has not yet been agreed upon, but talks are in progress.

The 22-year-old is currently on loan at Rosario Club - the Argentine outfit where he started his career before moving to Spurs in 2023 - until June 2026. Any deal with Bahia would result in an early termination of this loan spell.

Veliz found the back of the net five times in 16 appearances for Rosario, which he joined in July. All eight of his appearances for parent club Spurs were made during the 2023-24 season.

And Barcelona legend Messi previously had high hopes for the striker. He compared Veliz’s playing style to that of former Liverpool and Barcelona ace Suarez.

"[Roman] Vega, [Maximo] Perrone, and especially Veliz,” Messi said of Argentina’s best young players in September 2023.

“Watching him play reminds me of what Suarez used to play like. I am very excited for the future of this country, and hope I can be an influence to these people, and talk to him.”

Veliz is now a team-mate of another South American star in Angel Di Maria at Rosario Central after the former Manchester United man agreed in May to return to his boyhood club once Benfica's participation in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup had ended. Di Maria sent a number of messages to Veliz prior to his move to entice him back to Central.

"Ever since it went viral that I was returning to Central, Angel and I exchanged messages," revealed Veliz at his presentation (via ESPN).

"And when he said, 'Come on, you're missing now,' it's truly a driving force that pushes you forward, and I was crazy and wanted to come right away. What we wanted happened, and I'm very happy to be here."

Spurs are aiming to break a disappointing streak, having secured only one victory in their last seven matches across all competitions. West Ham had been on an 11-match winless streak before their cup win over QPR last weekend.

Nuno Espirito Santo showed true colours with blunt verdict after Tottenham sack

Nuno Espirito Santo showed true colours with blunt verdict after Tottenham sack - Daily Express
Description

West Ham boss Nuno Espirito Santo showed his true colours by calling Tottenham Hotspur a "huge club" despite previously being sacked by the club. The Portuguese head coach will lead the Hammers in a Premier League London derby visit to Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

His appointment at the London Stadium came last September, nearly four years after his brief 17-game spell in charge of Spurs came to an abrupt end. The 51-year-old's time in north London started brightly with four victories in five games but quickly unravelled before Antonio Conte was brought in as his replacement. Nuno bounced back impressively, however, later defeating Spurs twice in three matches after taking charge of Nottingham Forest.

This weekend marks his return to N17, with the Irons desperately needing all three points as they sit in 18th place in the Premier League standings, seven points adrift of 17th-placed Forest.

He might well face a hostile reception courtesy of the home fans as he looks to steer his struggling side away from the relegation zone.

That’s despite the under pressure manager having complimented Spurs following his brief yet gruelling period with the Lilywhites. He was asked last season whether Forest’s win over Tottenham was motivated by revenge, which he quickly played down.

Nuno voiced his appreciation for the chance to lead Tottenham despite the difficulties during his time there, saying: "I was honoured to be managing Tottenham," before continuing: "A huge, big club. I wish them the best."

Despite potentially sparking the wrath of his new fans, he doubled down in his praise for Spurs ahead of Saturday’s fixture. "It was an honour and pleasure to manage Spurs," he repeated. "Things didn't go well.

Tottenham's Thomas Frank statement on future with two new January additions

Tottenham's Thomas Frank statement on future with two new January additions - Daily Express
Description

Thomas Frank is convinced that Tottenham have made a resounding vote of confidence in his leadership, a clear statement of backing him, as they gear up for a crucial London derby clash with fellow strugglers West Ham. The Danish boss has endured a torrid period at the north London outfit, grappling with a mounting injury crisis, languishing in 14th place in the Premier League table, and managing just two victories from their last 13 outings.

Frustrated Spurs fans have voiced their displeasure with boos and pointed chants including 'Boring, boring Tottenham Hotspur' and 'Sideways and backwards, everywhere we go', reflecting their dissatisfaction with the style of play under the 52 year old. Nevertheless, Frank has enjoyed an encouraging week at the club, with Tottenham moving swiftly to secure Conor Gallagher's signature from Atletico Madrid in a £34.7million transfer.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

The head coach played a pivotal role in the deal, making a crucial phone call to the 25-year-old midfielder to outline his vision and the player's potential contribution to the project.

Frank also spearheaded the recruitment of John Heitinga as his new assistant manager this week, bringing in the Dutchman who previously worked alongside Arne Slot during Liverpool's Premier League triumph last season before his unsuccessful tenure as Ajax manager.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

When questioned about whether these two significant signings, coupled with the decision to offload last season's leading goalscorer Brennan Johnson, demonstrated the club's faith in his approach, Frank responded positively.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"Yes, definitely. I think it's a very good sign of it," he confirmed. "We know January is a tricky window to sign a quality player like Conor, I think it's a great sign of that.

"Also to sign John Heitinga, who is a very skilful coach, that he believes in the project and the vision from me, from the club, in a moment where, from the outside doesn't look as smooth but from the inside looks a little bit more positive.

"But of course I'm very aware we need even more consistent performances and better results. Tottenham have so much to offer. Tottenham confirm next transfer after £35m Conor Gallagher deal

Tottenham confirm next transfer deal after £35m Conor Gallagher in loan move - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham have announced the departure of Damola Ajayi, who is set to join League Two club Bromley on loan for the rest of the season. The 20-year-old was brought back from his loan stint at Doncaster Rovers before making the move, having made 19 appearances and scored two goals with one assist across all competitions.

Ajayi has previously been integrated into Tottenham's first-team setup, making his senior debut in a Europa League victory against Elfsborg. He managed to find the back of the net in the match, marking himself as a promising prospect during the 3-0 win, and continued his progression through the academy ranks.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Although his involvement at Doncaster wasn't as extensive as he might have hoped, the move to Bromley signifies a homecoming for the young player. He had previously played for the League Two side's academy before transferring to Tottenham.

Ajayi's move represents the sixth deal that Spurs have finalised in a bustling January transfer window, hot on the heels of confirming the acquisition of Conor Gallagher. The midfielder arrived from Atletico Madrid in a deal estimated to be worth around £34million.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"I'm so happy and excited to be here, taking the next step in my career at an amazing club," Gallagher expressed after signing his contract. "I wanted to be a Spurs player and thankfully the club felt the same. It was very easy."

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"It happened very quickly and I'm ready to get on the pitch. I know how great the fans are, I'm really happy to be a part of it here and want to create special moments and memories together."

Thomas Frank added: "Conor is a top midfielder, who we have worked tirelessly to add to our squad. He is still young so has plenty of room for improvement but also has huge experience across the Premier League, La Liga and with the England national team.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

"Conor has captained teams so will bring leadership, maturity, character and personality to our dressing room, while his running power, pressing ability and eye for goal will strengthen us in a key area of the pitch."

Gallagher's arrival follows Brennan Johnson's departure, which divided opinion amongst supporters as the Europa League winner secured a switch to Crystal Palace. The forward had found opportunities limited under Frank failing to establish himself as a regular, with the club's hierarchy opting to cash in whilst his value remained strong.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Additional departures include loan switches for Jamie Donley to Oxford United, Manor Solomon to Fiorentina, Kota Takai to Borussia Monchengladbach, and Yang Min-Hyeok to Coventry City. There remains optimism that the January transfer window could signal the beginning of an upturn in fortunes for Tottenham.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Loan deals for rising talents like Ajayi could provide more playing time and chances to develop for players who still have the potential to contribute to the senior team. It seems Tottenham's dealings are far from finished, with additional transfers being arranged for the remainder of the window.

Young left-back Souza appears poised for a £13m transfer to Tottenham in the upcoming weeks, which should bolster their defensive options. Destiny Udogie's injury woes have resulted in Djed Spence being moved to the left for most of the season, reducing competition on the right for Pedro Porro.

The Brazilian's arrival should enhance the quality of the defence, as well as offering plenty of promise for the future. There may be further transfers if the club determines that Frank requires additional attacking strength.

With Johnson's departure, followed by injuries to Mohammed Kudus and Richarlison, Spurs are left with limited options upfront to assist in creating and scoring goals. It remains uncertain whether any targets will emerge for this area of the pitch, as we reach the two-week point in the January market.

Tottenham 'set to complete second transfer' after Conor Gallagher as president speaks out

Tottenham 'set to complete second transfer' after Conor Gallagher as president speaks out | Football | Sport - Daily Express
Description

Tottenham are reportedly close to following up the capture of Conor Gallagher with another January transfer. The north Londoners have moved quickly to improve their midfield ranks by landing the England international from Atletico Madrid. Gallagher has signed a five-and-a-half-year deal at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, keeping him there until the summer of 2031.

Now, it's being reported that Tottenham are set to finalise their second transfer in the space of a few days. They have reached a full agreement with Santos for the signing of defender Souza, according to Spanish outlet AS. The teenager is expected to travel to England to undergo a medical and complete the formalities of his proposed switch.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

The report adds that Santos don’t hold all of the player's rights, with a percentage being held by Souza himself. However, reports have suggested that he has given up those rights in order to facilitate a move to Tottenham.

ESPN Brasil have also reported that it is a done deal, with Santos expected to receive a transfer fee in the region of £13million. The money will go towards easing the club's financial troubles with the aim of warding off the possibility of further sanctions from FIFA.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

The main issue stems from a dispute between Santos and Portuguese club Estoril Praia, who filed a lawsuit against the Brazilian side following their signing of Joao Basso on loan.

Article continues below ADVERTISEMENT

Santos will reportedly use the money from Tottenham to settle the debt with Estoril. They are said to owe around £2.8m, which must be paid before a 45-day deadline to avoid a transfer ban.

Santos president Marcelo Teixeira has already confirmed this, telling Brazilian media: "The effort is always to balance the debts. We already paid R$130m (£18m) in transfer bans in 2024 and others were avoided through agreements."

Tottenham, meanwhile, will be hoping to wrap up their deal to sign Souza as quickly as possible so that he can be officially presented as their newest January signing.

Thomas Frank previously said that he would only look to add 'committed' players to his squad in the winter market, with the Dane looking to provide an injection of extra quality for the rest of the season.

Speaking last month, he said: "Any player we sign needs to be fully committed on the project. No doubt about that. Very important.

Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd's Bruno Fernandes fear, Spurs medical today, Guehi bid - Daily Express
Description

Manchester United have no ambitions to extend Jadon Sancho's contract in hope of selling him for a fee this summer.

The i Paper says United chiefs are ready to cut ties with the England winger currently on loan at Aston Villa.

That means the 25-year-old will become a free agent in July.

Manchester City sporting director Hugo Viana is preparing to make an offer for Marc Guehi before the window shuts.

TalkSPORT say City are ready to test the waters with Crystal Palace seeking more than £35million for their captain.

The report claims Guehi is seeking wages of around £200,000 a week.

But the England international knows if he waits until the summer to become a free agent, he can also bank a big signing-on fee whoever he joins.

Brazilian left-back Souza will undergo a medical today to complete a move to Tottenham.

A £13million deal has been agreed with Santos for Spurs to recruit the fleet-footed teenager.

The 19-year-old has made 38 appearances for Santos in total and is a former Brazil U17 international.

Manchester United insiders are fearful Bruno Fernandes will finally leave the club this calendar year, say reports.

Sources have told The i Paper there is a general fear that Fernandes is fed up with the mess United are in and will try to engineer an exit.

The captain, 31, has fielded interest from Saudi Arabia before while Bayern Munich are another potential destination.

Fernandes' contract reportedly includes a clause giving him permission to join a club outside England for £57million.
