CRISTIAN ROMERO is not the only central defender providing Tottenham with a headache right now.

While Spurs work out what to do with their outspoken skipper after he mouthed off on social media once again, they also have the thorny issue of whizkid Luka Vuskovic.

Because the 18-year-old Croat is progressing so quickly out on loan with Hamburg in the Bundesliga, that all of the world’s top clubs are starting to take notice.

And there is fast becoming the very real possibility that Spurs could face a fight to keep hold of Vuskovic before he has even played a senior competitive game for them.

Former Tottenham defender Ramon Vega certainly believes that to be the case.

In a brutal blast at the club, Vega tweeted: “This player is not coming back to Spurs!

“Another of many players the Spurs had a chance with, but they made the wrong decision.

“This is an example of the problem Spurs have been having within the football department! A total neglect.

“They will make good money, for sure, but there’s no football direction within the club. Off to Bayern he goes, no wonder I will not blame him.”

Tottenham beat off competition from Manchester City and other big boys to sign a 16-year-old Vuskovic from Hajduk Split for a whopping £12million in September 2023.

But due to Brexit rules, the stocky teenager could not complete the move to N17 for another two years until after he had turned 18.

He had two loan spells in the intervening two years, first to Radomiak Radom in Poland and then last term to Belgian side Westerlo.

It was at the Antwerp club where not only did he rack up the appearances, playing 36 times in Belgian top division, but also earned a reputation for scoring goals.

And not only scoring goals, but scoring great goals too.

Out of his impressive haul of seven strikes for Westerlo, he netted a breathtaking overhead kick to grab his side a 2-2 draw at Club Bruges on Boxing Day 2024.

And he has continued his sharp-shooting this term on loan at Hamburg, where he already has four Bundesliga goals in 17 games.

Dominic Solanke made headlines for his inspired scorpion kick against Manchester City at the weekend, but defender Vuskovic had already pulled off something similar in December.

His acrobatic effort came in the thrilling 3-2 victory over Werder Bremen, backheeling in a free-kick from Arsenal loanee Fabio Vieira.

Fans lit red flares in the crowd as they deliriously celebrated the improvised strike, while a winking Vuskovic pinched the shoulders of his shirt to revel in the moment.

Since then the starlet, who will face England at the World Cup this summer, has scored on an even bigger stage with Saturday’s leveller in the 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich.

Harry Kane’s Bayern are among the clutch of elite sides who would like to sign Vuskovic this summer, with club legend Lothar Matthaus blown away by his progress.

Matthaus, who won 150 caps for Germany and won six titles for Bayern, told TV after the game: “At the age of 18, he plays as if he had already played three World Cups!

“Even when I was 30, I didn’t see what he saw at 18. This player is so intelligent.”

Vuskovic only won the first of his two Croatia caps in June but already looks to be his nation’s most exciting young prospect.

Former Barcelona star Ivan Rakitic, who won 106 caps for Croatia and helped inflict the World Cup semi-final defeat over England at Russia 2018, said this week: “All of Europe is talking about him right now.

“FC Bayern needs to do everything [to sign him]. I believe the boy has to go to Bayern.

“He has everything it takes to become one of the best centre-backs.

“I’m curious to see if Tottenham will manage to keep him beyond the summer, because in my opinion he’s already ready for the next step to one of the absolute top clubs.

“And for me, there are only four or five of those clubs in Europe.”

The external pressure already seems to be building on Spurs to keep hold of the youngster, despite him not even playing for them competitively yet.

Vuskovic only arrived at Spurs for the first time in the summer, and he featured in pre-season.

He scored and assisted in July’s 2-0 win at Reading, which was Thomas Frank’s first game in charge.

But with Tottenham having their best two players in central defence – Romero and Micky van de Ven – and Frank wanting to play four at the back at the time, Vuskovic was unlikely to start many games for them this term.

Spurs were looking at loaning him to a Championship club, but in the end he went to Germany to Hamburg, who had looked after his older brother Mario during his doping ban.

Mario, 24, has not played since being suspended in March 2023 for failing a drugs test, with his ban extended in August until November 2026.

Yet Hamburg have stuck by the central defender, vowing to re-sign him when his ban is up.

Both Mario and Luka were at the club’s promotion party in May, where the younger sibling saw first hand the passion of the fanbase that he would end up playing for.

Hamburg would love to loan Vuskovic for a further year but surely know the teen sensation has already outgrown them.

The question is, with Spurs 14th in the Premier League and looking set for no European football next year, has he already outgrown his parent club too?

Tottenham would push back strongly, insisting that Vuskovic is their player.

But they may have a job on their hands to convince the boy wonder his future lies with them, given the likes of Bayern are circling this summer.

Cristian Romero back on Atletico Madrid’s transfer radar after rant about Tottenham’s ‘disgraceful’ lack of players

Cristian Romero back on Atletico Madrid's transfer radar after rant about Spurs - thesun.co.uk
Description

CRISTIAN ROMERO is back on Atletico Madrid’s radar in the wake of his Tottenham outburst.

The LaLiga giants were keen to sign the World Cup winner last summer, but could not fund a move.

Romero ended up signing a new contract with Spurs and was named skipper by Thomas Frank.

Yet the Argentine has caused under-pressure boss Frank a headache for the second time in a month with a thinly-veiled dig towards the Spurs board on social media.

Now Atletico, who are targeting a new centre-back in the summer, are understood to be ready to pounce again should the Argentine become available at the end of the season.

It is unclear if Tottenham would even entertain that prospect, having only handed Romero a fresh four-year deal believed to be worth more than £200,000 a week in August.

Romero, 27, made headlines with an Instagram post within an hour of Monday’s transfer deadline in which he branded Spurs’ lack of available players as “disgraceful”.

It was viewed by many fans as another swipe at the Spurs hierarchy over insufficient spending in the transfer market, and was liked by a number of team-mates.

The explosive missive followed a similar one in January following the 3-2 defeat at Bournemouth where he hit out at “other people” – viewed as the Spurs higher-ups – for not speaking publicly, and that when they do, they “tell a few lies”.

The lie comment was later edited out of his post but not before thousands of Tottenham fans had seen and shared it.

Frank and co-sporting director Johan Lange spoke to Romero at the time about that statement but the defender was not fined, nor was he stripped of the captaincy.

Though Frank did hint that he may not be so lenient if it happened again, when answering if Romero could reach a point where his manager draws a line and says ‘no more’.

Frank replied on January 8: “Yes, of course. I’ve done that before with people being late, there was the [Yves] Bissouma situation.

“You talk about having to draw a line. I think, if it’s the exact same situation that they do… You can make a mistake [but] don’t make the same mistake twice.

“So I think I understand why you mention some players, but it’s all different situations and different players.”

Argentina team-mate Julian Alvarez revealed in December how close his pal Romero came to joining Atletico in the summer, before his contract U-turn at Tottenham.

Brentford vs Tottenham: Prediction, preview and odds for New Year’s Day clash - thesun.co.uk
Description

BRENTFORD and Tottenham are separated by just a single point heading into their New Year’s Day clash.

SunSport betting experts have previewed the contest and selected the best bets, tips and exclusive sign-up bonuses from our leading betting partners.

Brentford vs Tottenham preview

Losing Thomas Frank, Bryan Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa, Brentford were most people’s tip for a toiling campaign.

But their win over Bournemouth last time out has the Bees up in eighth spot and just three points behind Chelsea who occupy fifth!

Two wins on the spin ended their four-game wait for a victory, though defeat at Spurs was included in that run.

Keith Andrews is doing a terrific job, with their home form in particular a standout with only Arsenal, Man City and Aston Villa picking up more points on home soil.

But Spurs arrive here in decent fettle away from home, with no side picking up more than the 17 points Spurs and Frank have accumulated on their travels.

Spurs have won the last four games against Brentford too and arrive off the back of a good 1-0 victory at another London side in Crystal Palace last time out.

Tricky one to call but the home fans are sure to be up for this game more than any other this season…..

Brentford vs Tottenham predictions

Good form

Really tough one to call, with Brentford excellent at home and Spurs very good away from home.

Two wins on the spin for the Bees has them above Thomas Frank’s Tottenham coming into this one and the ground is sure to be charged up ahead of this one.

Four wins and a draw in their last five home games, the Bees can edge this and continue their impressive campaign.

Description

THE Premier League weekend concludes with a tasty London Derby at Selhurst Park this Sunday afternoon as Crystal Palace host Tottenham Hotspur.

Both sides arrive in South London desperate to arrest a slump in form. Tottenham, managed by Thomas Frank, are reeling after a chaotic 2-1 defeat to Liverpool last weekend that saw them finish with nine men. Crystal Palace are also looking to bounce back after a 4-1 thumping by Leeds and a heartbreaking penalty shootout exit to Arsenal in the Carabao Cup just days ago.

You can back the Eagles—or the depleted visitors—with a 300% welcome offer using the bet365 bonus code SUN365.

The offer for Crystal Palace vs Tottenham

The betting angle: Spurs suspensions to cost them?

This is a huge test for Tottenham. They travel to Selhurst Park without two key starters, as both Cristian Romero and Xavi Simons are suspended following their red cards against Liverpool. With Spurs losing three of their last five league games, the pressure is mounting on Thomas Frank to find a solution.

Crystal Palace have their own issues, having played 120 minutes against Arsenal on Tuesday night. However, Oliver Glasner’s side have a strong recent record in this fixture, winning the last two meetings (2-0 in May and 1-0 in October 2024).

Given Spurs’ defensive absences and Palace’s fatigue, this could be open. But with Tottenham’s backline decimated, the value lies with the hosts avoiding defeat.

Our tip: Crystal Palace Double Chance (Win or Draw).

The longshot: Jean-Philippe Mateta to score anytime.

Tottenham 2 Brentford 0: Pressure eases on Thomas Frank as Richarlison and Xavi Simons help down his former club

Tottenham 2 Brentford 0: Pressure eases on Frank after win against former club - thesun.co.uk
Description

TOTTENHAM finally twigged that attack is the best form of defence as Thomas Frank earned sweet relief by banishing his beloved Brentford.

Xavi Simons bagged his first Spurs goal in just their second Premier League home win of the season to provide a much needed boost in North London.

Simons was restored to the side and had already set-up Richarlison’s opener before his fine solo strike offered the first clear evidence as to why Spurs shelled out £52million to bring him in from Germany.

After a bruising run of defeats to Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Fulham, Frank can sit back with a smile off the back of Tuesday’s point at Newcastle and, at last, a home display they can be proud of.

The caveat for the Spurs boss is that this must just be the start. No Premier League side have lost more away games than Brentford this season.

This was no big scalp, but the buccaneering performance offers a template to get everyone onside.

A visit from the club where Frank spent nine happy years was a reunion fraught with danger for the Dane, who knew he had it all to do in order to win over the skeptical Spurs support.

Without a win in five and knowing what lay ahead if his former club were to turn up and continue that run, he went on the offensive.

Simons, having been on the bench for the last four, was one of five changes, forming a more adventurous midfield alongside Archie Gray.

Spurs showed more endeavour from the off, passing short and sharp to move forwards at pace.

BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS

Though early on they still struggled to craft a chance, prompting groans from the stands when chances to shoot were turned down.

The Bees were the ones to force the first real opening, Igor Thiago breaking free and seeing his low strike tipped around the post by Guglielmo Vicario.

But a minute later Tottenham, jolted into the realisation that they actually needed to produce something, struck the opener.

A first shot on target in the first half for five games – and just look what happens when you actually have a go.

There was no sign of second-guessing or cutting back about it, Pedro Porro looping a ball down the right for Simons to chase, cushioning across to Richarlison first time for the Brazilian to tap in.

Tottenham had their tails up. Simons pumped up the fans and Randal Kolo Muani saw his close-range header flapped away by Caoimhin Kelleher.

Brentford were struggling to threaten and Spurs were keeping the pace high.

Simons had looked keen to impress from the off, sending one speculative shot slightly high and wide before nearly finding the second tier with another. An assist was not enough and soon he had more.

In tremendous fashion too.

The Dutchman looked to have got himself in a spot of bother, losing the ball cheaply in the centre-circle.

Simons snapped into one risky challenge on Mikkel Damsgaard, a sign of his desperation to leave a mark.

He got away with that one, quickly picked himself up and launched straight into another, winning the ball from Sepp van den Berg before setting off at pace.

The Bees could not keep up as he drove on, confidence rising, before finally unleashing a low strike into the far corner and dashing off to celebrate his maiden goal for the club.

It was a blessed relief for a grumpy fanbase – who applauded their players off at the break in place of the usual boos.

Smiles were wide with the tepid, tentative football of recent weeks and months feeling a mile off.

Spurs returned after the restart with the same vigour and Djed Spence came close to making it three, denied at the near post by Kelleher after robbing Nathan Collins on the edge of the box.

Kudus then won the ball himself and sent a low effort at the Bees’ goalkeeper.

Despite having their visitors on the ropes, Tottenham were typically unable to maintain complete control.

Micky van de Ven, back in the side after his hamstrings were allowed a rest at Newcastle, needed to produce a perfectly timed challenge on Thiago after the big striker was sent through by a smart Damsgaard ball.

With half-an-hour remaining and the knowledge that his side were more than capable of blowing this, Frank introduced his chief bruiser, Joao Palhinha, to help see things out.

Thiago continued to cause bother, nearly netting after a quick throw-in after some needless Mohammed Kudus juggling ended with the ball rolling out of play.

Spurs regained their composure and the ex-West Ham man thought he had capped the afternoon with a third – wheeling away with a stool in hand to begin his trademark celebration when the linesman’s flag was raised.

Kudus did get a sit down, instantly replaced by Pape Matar Sarr – who should have added a third himself.

Frank would not have been getting greedy, however. Two was enough and a vast improvement on home turf.

‘Sub him off right now’ – Tottenham fans livid as Vicario howler fires Fulham into early lead in London derby

'Sub him off right now' - Tottenham fans livid as Vicario howler fires Fulham into early lead in London derby - thesun.co.uk
Description

TOTTENHAM fans raged at goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario after he made a horrendous mistake to hand Fulham an early 2-0 lead.

Spurs were hoping to bounce back from their dismal 4-1 loss to Arsenal in the North London Derby against the Cottagers on Saturday night.

But they went 1-0 down in the first four minutes through Kenny Tete‘s deflected strike – and Vicario’s moment of madness gifted Fulham a second two minutes later.

The Italian rushed out of his box and attempted to make a clearance under pressure from Raul Jimenez.

But he gave the ball straight to Josh King, who had the simple task of knocking it back to Harry Wilson to sweep brilliantly into an empty net from distance.

His glaring mistake infuriated Spurs fans, with some urging Thomas Frank to take him off immediately.

One angrily demanded on X: “Sub Vicario off right now.”

A second said: “What on EARTH is Vicario doing.”

A third wrote: “0-2. Unacceptable. Vicario what are you doing.”

Another post questioned Vicario’s work ethic after making the initial mistake.

BEST ONLINE CASINOS – TOP SITES IN THE UK

It read: “Vicario’s reaction is absolutely disgraceful, he doesn’t even bother sprinting back…”

Sky Sports commentator Alan Smith was baffled by the error from Vicario.

He said: “Vicario is getting absolute pelters from his own supporters. He makes a complete hash of his clearance. Wham, bam – what a start.”

Vicario has been guilty making errors this season and there have been some calls from fans to bench him in favour of back-up option Antonin Kinsky.

Spurs were at sixes and sevens early in the game as Fulham hit the post through Samuel Chukwueze.

And Marco Silva‘s team should have had a third as Chukwueze missed a gilt-edged chance to slot into an empty net after rounding Vicario, with Mickey van de Ven making a last-ditch tackle.

Before this game, Spurs were on a winless run of three games in the Premier League.

Thomas Frank in selection dilemma for crunch Fulham game over tried-and-trusted Palhinha or 19-year-old wonderkids

Thomas Frank in selection dilemma for crunch Fulham game over tried-and-trusted Palhinha or 19-year-old wonderkids - thesun.co.uk
Description

THOMAS FRANK must decide whether to go for the Joao factor or the wow factor in Saturday’s crunch clash with Fulham.

Master-tackler Joao Palhinha is ready and waiting to come back into midfield against his former side, having proved to be one of Frank’s most dependable players this term.

But many fans are eager for their manager to stick with 19-year-old wonderkids Archie Gray and Lucas Bergvall after their dazzling displays against Paris Saint-Germain in midweek.

Palhinha, 30, may be regarded as the safe option for his discipline, experience and tackling – his 93 duels won are the league’s highest – plus, he has chipped in with four goals too.

Yet given his age and the fact that he is only on loan, there are calls for Frank to opt for youth and build something to last.

It is a tactical dilemma for Frank who will feel the wrath of the fanbase if they suffer yet more capital punishment on Saturday.

Supporters are still scarred by Sunday’s 4-1 battering at Arsenal as well as the 1-0 home defeat to Chelsea earlier this month, with some already losing faith in the Dane.

Palhinha himself will be desperate to face his old club and former boss Marco Silva, whom he credits for helping get his career back on track after a failed deadline-day move to Bayern Munich in September 2023.

The Portuguese midfielder had even had his medical but ended up staying at Fulham a further year, before eventually making the switch to Bavaria.

Palhinha, who joined Spurs on loan from Bayern this summer, said: “The reaction that I had at that moment is probably the same reaction that I have on the pitch when a team-mate loses the ball and I try to get it again.

BEST FREE BETS AND BETTING SIGN UP OFFERS

“I had a special talk with Marco in that moment because as you can imagine it was not easy.

“But I like to think that everything that happens in our lives is because it needs to happen. “After this happened, I started to play again and I sent these things to the back of my mind. And I just kept focused on my job and after one season I had the opportunity again.”

Spurs were much improved at the Parc des Princes on Wednesday – albeit it was a low bar to clear – but they still conceded five.

That may tempt him to bring back in the more resolute Palhinha, though fans will point out that the former Sporting Lisbon man played when the team shipped four at the Emirates.

Whether he picks Palhinha or not – and he may well play him with Bergvall and Gray – Frank is a big fan of his talent.

The ex-Brentford chief suggested no call will be made on whether to take up the £27million option to sign him permanently until April at the earliest.

Frank said: “We are playing with only two or three-day intervals, four games, I have no thinking about recruitment or January right now.

“But all things about bits like that, I can’t see it being done before spring time.

“In general, Joao has been very good for us. He has been very competitive, he has been in games, carrying the team, really helping to both win the duels, and the second balls.

“Doing a lot of regains in the teams. Plus he has been quite dangerous for us going forward, scoring a few goals for us.”

Spurs, who are without suspended captain Cristian Romero, host Fulham having lost at home to Bournemouth, Aston Villa and Chelsea already this season in the league.

They were only a last-minute Palhinha leveller from being beaten at home by basement-boys Wolves in September, too.

It has led to an edginess at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the crowd which could rear its head on Saturday if Frank’s side are labouring again.

Asked how the home form can differ so much to the impressive results away, Palhinha replied: “I don’t know. I think we feel the same support at home as when we play away.

“At home it has been a difficult phase, which sometimes clubs cross. I think our time will come at home. We are improving.”

Arsenal face backlash after charging eye-watering amount for legend stadium tour – £335 MORE than bitter rivals Spurs

Arsenal face backlash after charging eye-watering amount for legend stadium tour – £335 MORE than bitter rivals Spurs - thesun.co.uk
Description

ARSENAL is facing fan backlash for charging fans nearly £400 for a VIP stadium tour with a soccer “legend” – £335 more than rivals including Spurs and Manchester United.

Gunners fans are being offered £395-a-head packages for a four-hour “VIP Legend Experience” and lunch with stars Ray Parlour, David Seaman or Lee Dixon.

The Gooners package includes a behind the scenes visit to all corners of the Emirates Stadium base plus buffet lunch served with unlimited wine, beer and soft drinks in the club’s exclusive Diamond Club.

But a similar VIP deal with North London rivals Spurs – with Ossie Ardiles, Gary Mabbutt, Clive Allen or Micky Hazard – costs just £60.

And rivals Tottenham are not the only Premier League club to be charging far less for a tour than table-topping Arsenal.

Manchester United also charges £60 for VIP tours with legends including former striker Norman Whiteside.

Manchester City charges just £50 for their “Walk with a Legend” Stadium Tour led by former idol Peter Barnes.

Liverpool charges £55 for their LFC Stadium tour of Anfield plus a Q&A with a choice of ex-players including John Aldridge, Steve McMahon or Mark Lawrenson.

Mark Mills, who runs the Arsenal East Sussex Supporters Club, said: “I’ve been going up to Arsenal for about 50 years but this is definitely not for the normal working class football fan.”

Tottenham on Sunday afternoon, Harry Kane on Wednesday night.

What a week it’s been for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal – dishing out good hidings to those they love to hate the most.

After substitutes Noni Madueke and Gabriel Martinelli had sent Arsenal clear at the summit of the Champions League table, with its only 100 per cent record, Bayern Munich suffered scornful cries of “are you Tottenham in disguise?”

Former Spurs goal-machine Kane, never a popular visitor here, had riled the locals by claiming that the trend towards set-piece dominance had made Premier League football less entertaining to watch this season.

So dead-ball specialists Arsenal, naturally, grabbed the lead from a corner – Jurrien Timber’s header being cancelled out by Bayern’s teenage starlet Lennart Karl before half-time.

Thomas Frank reveals Micky van de Ven and Djed Spence came to his office to apologise after snub following Spurs loss

Frank reveals Van de Ven and Spence came to his office to apologise after snub - thesun.co.uk
Description

MICKY VAN DE VEN and Djed Spence have said sorry for blanking Thomas Frank after Saturday’s shocker against Chelsea.

Stand-in captain Van de Ven, 24, and England star Spence, 25, walked past Frank after the final whistle, snubbing their manager’s plea to applaud the fans for their support.

It was a striking image after the dismal 1-0 defeat, with Frank helplessly looking back at the pair for a number of seconds as they stormed off down the tunnel.

Speaking ahead of tuesday night’s Champions League hosting of FC Copenhagen, Frank revealed: “Micky and Djed came into my office yesterday, unprompted, and just said: ‘I want to say sorry for the situation.’

“They didn’t want it to look bad or disrespectful or all of the kind of perceptions you can get in this beautiful media world.

“That was not the intention at all towards me or the team or the club. They were just frustrated with the performance, the loss and the booing during the game.”

The flash point came after Spurs fans booed the team DURING the match against Chelsea, during which Tottenham registered their lowest-ever xG 0.05 since records began in 2012.

That statistic refers to the amount of goals a team is expected to score in a match, and it was the worst return of any Premier League side this season.

Van de Ven and Spence, who missed training with a knock but should be available this evening went in separately to see Frank.

The Dane added: “Of course I’m happy (they came to see him), because I knew the question would come today, that they were coming in.

“And that means they care. I think that’s very good. They care about the team, the club. In this case, me. I’m happy with that. So that was very good.

“Then we just had a good talk about a lot of things. And like with everything, we keep it internally.

“Like I said to the players when I said that before, it will be very, very, very unusual if I ever throw a player under the bus. We’re all humans, but I’ll always protect them.”

The frustration emanating from the stands was vocalised with boos at half-time and full-time by supporters, as well as in the final few minutes of the action itself with Tottenham struggling to create a chance, let alone score an equaliser.

The ex-Brentford boss added: “The fans were fantastic the first 30 minutes and after the game if we perform badly and on top of that we lost the game, more than fair enough they boo us.

“But during the game, we need a little bit of help.

Goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario revealed the team had talked through what happened against Chelsea and echoed his manager’s call for fans to keep up their support until the final whistle.

The Italian added: “Of course, we have spoken.

“I think probably in some moments during the game… probably when we are chasing, we need to be a little more cool heads and if we have a little bit more help from some situations coming from the stands it could be, of course, better.”
