Tottenham’s difficult situation with Richarlison has taken another turn, with Roberto De Zerbi making it clear that the Brazilian will not be brought back into his plans even for cup football.

The 29-year-old was left out of Spurs’ 25-man Premier League squad earlier this month after a summer in which he pushed for a move away.

Despite remaining eligible for the Carabao Cup, De Zerbi has now shut the door on any short-term return.

De Zerbi makes his Richarlison position clear

Speaking ahead of Tottenham’s Carabao Cup tie against Liverpool, De Zerbi was emphatic when asked whether Richarlison could feature.

He said, as reported by Fabrizio Romano:

“Richarlison will NOT play even if he’s available. Not even in the Carabao Cup, no”.

That stance is especially striking because Tottenham are struggling badly for goals. Spurs have failed to score in their first four Premier League matches, their longest goalless start to a league season in club history.

The decision also comes despite Richarlison being Spurs’ leading Premier League scorer last season.

The Guardian reported earlier this month that the forward rejected a contract extension and repeatedly made clear that he wanted to leave, prompting De Zerbi to move on with other attacking options.

Richarlison remains under contract and is technically eligible for domestic cup competitions, but Tottenham’s manager clearly does not intend to use him while the dispute remains unresolved.

Tottenham Hotspur fans are not particularly enjoying their team's Premier League exploits right now, so will they fare any better in the Carabao Cup? Well, in the previous round, Roberto de Zerbi's side did demolish Charlton Athletic 5-1 at home, albeit two scorers that night, Mikey Moore and Kevin Danso, have both subsequently departed on loan.

In the league meantime, Spurs have not so much as even scored a goal so far, defeated by both Brentford and Newcastle, followed by back-to-back goalless draws with Nottingham Forest and Everton. Thus, the last thing they need right now is a trip to Anfield. Very few of the 6,000 supporters who will be in the Anfield Road end have ever seen their team beat Liverpool on Merseyside, but can they and millions more take any encouragement from the last five meetings with the Reds?

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur all-time head-to-head record

Matches Played: 187.

Liverpool Wins: 92. Draws: 45. Tottenham Hotspur Wins: 50.

Liverpool vs Tottenham Hotspur: Last five results

The last time these two clubs met in March, despite the fact Arne Slot's side dominated throughout, taking the lead through Dominik Szoboszlai's free-kick, Richarlison struck right at the death to pinch a point for Spurs that would prove crucial in the relegation battle.

This was the Brazilian's sixth career goal against Liverpool, the joint-most he has managed against any single opponent. However, Richarlison will not be adding to that tally on Tuesday, having been completely frozen out. He is not even in Spurs' Premier League squad, so is eligible to feature in EFL Cup matches, but surely will not do so.

That draw is about as good as it has got for Spurs in this fixture in recent times. The pair did actually meet in the League Cup two seasons ago, doing so at the semi-final stage. Ange Postecoglou's side won 1-0 in the first leg in North London, in dramatic fashion. Lucas Bergvall should have been sent off, but escaped punishment, only to pop up with the winner soon after.

Nevertheless, four weeks later at Anfield, Liverpool crushed Postecoglou's team, who put in an embarrassing display, prevailing 4-0 to reach Wembley. Including this game, Spurs are winless in 17 visits to Anfield, losing 12 of them, winning there only once in 30 attempts since a Worthington Cup tie in 1998. If you're looking for a good omen, led by George Graham, Spurs actually won the competition that season.

Nevertheless, Tottenham's sole success at Anfield this century came in May 2011. That day, Harry Redknapp's team got the better of Kenny Dalglish's side, prevailing 2-0, thanks to goals from Rafael van der Vaart and Luke Modrić, who were not bad, were they?

In more recent times, Liverpool have won 14 of their last 20 clashes with Spurs, losing only two, including a 6-3 victory in North London just before Christmas 2024. It is tough to forecast what the pair will serve up on Tuesday night, but a Tottenham win would certainly be a turn up for the books.

Tottenham Hotspur managed to avoid defeat on Saturday afternoon against Everton, but, for a fourth straight game, Spurs were unable to find the back of the net, and things are starting to reach a crisis point in the attack for Roberto De Zerbi. Although Spurs signed three new attacking players this summer in Savio, Omar Marmoush, and Mykhaylo Mudryk, they are getting no production or goals out of the new attack, and even the returns to fitness of Mohammed Kudus and James Maddison don't look like they are going to totally turn the fortunes around.

Spurs need an X-Factor, and while Maddison is expected to return this week with Liverpool in the League Cup on the horizon, he won't be ready to start right off the bat. And that's partially because he has not even started for Spurs since the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season when he tore his ACL.

But maybe, in the meantime, Kudus can be a solution in the 10. He has played there before, even if not regularly, and he has the quickness and creativity to maybe be more incisive and make more of an impact creatively than he did on the wings last season when he had five assists.

Tottenham could use Mohammed Kudus in the middle

Roberto De Zerbi already floated the idea of converting Mohammed Kudus into a central player for the time being when he addressed the Ghanaian international before the match against Everton. The Italian manager said of Kudus, via The Spurs Watch, " Amazing thing for me. I wanted Mo Kudus when I was in Brighton. I pushed a lot to bring him before he went to West Ham, He can play as a winger, as a number 10 and as a striker also."

Tottenham Hotspur fans have yet to see De Zerbi and Kudus actually work together, as a worse injury than expected kept Kudus out of the remainder of the 2025/26 season, robbing the new signing from West Ham United in 2025 of the chance of getting on the same page quickly as the new coach.

Kudus is still working his way back to fitness, of course, but he did get a good 30 minutes in against Everton. Tottenham need a spark in the attack, and De Zerbi has to be willing to try anything. He has already brought up the possibility of Kudus playing in that 10 role, and that could be a move he tries out soon.

Richarlison's move to Vasco da Gama has collapsed at the last minute. The 29-year-old forward, who no longer featured in Tottenham Hotspur's first-team plans, could not agree personal terms with the Brazilian club. That is according to The Independent, citing sources at news agency Press Association (PA).

Recently, Spurs manager Roberto De Zerbi delivered a particularly painful and telling message to Richarlison by giving the final "foreign" spot in the Premier League squad to Xavi Simons instead. Simons is currently out with a knee injury.

After Spurs dropped him to the Under-21s, Richarlison looked destined to leave for former club Everton this summer. That move never got over the line, leaving the 29-year-old poacher staring at a hopeless six months.

In Brazil, though, Vasco da Gama seemed to offer a way out. The clubs were discussing a permanent transfer because a loan was not possible: Spurs have already sent six players out on loan to overseas clubs and have therefore hit the limit under FIFA rules.

Vasco da Gama agreed a fee with Spurs. Yet the striker could not reach an agreement with the Brazilian club, The Independent report, based on PA. The deal then collapsed.

On Instagram, Richarlison insisted the "problem" was with Spurs. "I received other offers, but I made it very clear that I wanted to stay at Vasco until December. Unfortunately, Tottenham set a limit on the loan period, which meant it did not work out."

Earlier this week, reports also emerged that Richarlison wants his Spurs contract, which runs until mid-2027, terminated with immediate effect. "The striker's camp believe that Tottenham cannot make the decision to banish the player from the first team to the Under-21s," Brazilian outlet Globo wrote.

Should that fail, Richarlison looks set to spend the next six months with Tottenham Hotspur Under-21s. Spurs signed the 54-cap international from Everton in 2022. Since then, he has played 134 matches for the Londoners, recording 32 goals and 15 assists.

Tottenham Hotspur vs Everton predictions

Under 2.5 Goals – 3/4 – Roberto De Zerbi’s new-look Tottenham are winless and goalless after three games of the new Premier League season, and they failed to register even a single shot on target in their drab 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest last weekend.

It’s not as if they’re spurning chances either. Only three teams in the division rank lower for expected goals than Tottenham (3.36) so far.

When Spurs last hosted Everton in May, they squeezed a 1-0 victory out of a tight contest that featured just three shots on target combined from the players involved. Margins could be just as slim on Saturday.

Everton Double Chance – 4/5 – The Toffees have lost on each of their last five visits to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, however, they look decently positioned to stop the rot in the capital on Saturday evening.

Spurs have limped out of the blocks this season and have yet to register a win or even a goal in the Premier League, while Everton’s unbeaten record remains intact after their late rescue act against Man Utd last weekend (2-2).

This looks like a good chance for David Moyes’s side to prey on Tottenham’s nervousness and lack of chemistry, and Everton offer good value at just shy of events to avoid defeat.

Odds - 9/1 – Place bet on LiveScore Bet

Omar Marmoush over 2.5 shots (7/25)— Tottenham’s summer recruit is yet to get off the mark for his new employers, though he has been trying hard to break his duck. Marmoush had three shots on his Spurs debut against Newcastle and another two against Forest last week. The Egyptian will let fly from any distance given a chance, so expect him to beat a target of over 2.5 shots here.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall over 0.5 shots on target (9/10) — The attacking midfielder was a threat around the box against Man Utd last week, racking up four attempts in Everton’s 2-2 draw with the Mancunians, two of which hit the target. The 28-year-old has started all four of the Toffees’ matches in league and cup since the summer and he landed 1+ shots on target in each outing.

Harrison Armstrong over 1.5 fouls (4/6) — Academy graduate and local lad Armstrong plays with passion for his boyhood club, though his enthusiasm can spill over on occasion. The 19-year-old committed three fouls against Palace on matchday one, two against Bournemouth after that and another one against Man Utd last weekend. He’s worth backing to top over 1.5 fouls again in North London.

Rodrigo Bentancur over 1.5 fouls (4/9)— The Uruguayan was chosen to start in each of Tottenham’s last two Premier League fixtures against Newcastle and Forest, and he was arguably Spurs’ best performer in the latter, so he could continue in De Zerbi’s starting XI against Everton. Bentancur has been committing 3.20 fouls per 90 minutes in the Premier League so far and his total tally of eight fouls conceded makes him the joint-biggest offender in the division.

Mykhaylo Mudryk injury is Roberto De Zerbi's first hint at Richarlison regret

Mykhaylo Mudryk injury is Roberto De Zerbi's first hint at Richarlison regret - LiveScore
Description

New Tottenham Hotspur left winger Mykhaylo Mudryk had not played a single game in two years after serving a suspension and his own injury woes, but the former Chelsea player stepped onto the pitch again last weekend as a substitute against Nottingham Forest. And not but days later, Spurs fans learned that the Ukrainian winger is going to be out for several weeks with an ankle injury.

Not a single Tottenham fan is surprised, of course. And that's not only because Spurs have been seemingly cursed with the injury bug for years, but it's also because Mudryk has a track record of injuries and, again, was always going to be a fitness issue having not played competitive football in ages.

Mudryk was a last minute addition on loan from Chelsea on transfer deadline day, following the tradition of Spurs taking punts on fallen young stars like Timo Werner and Randal Kolo Muani on loan. And Roberto De Zerbi is hoping that his personal favorite from his old Shakhtar Donetsk days ends up being more successful than them.

Tottenham signed Mykhaylo Mudryk and snubbed Richarlison

The doors opened for Mudryk, of course, because Tottenham Hotspur were unable to sell Richarlison to Everton and sign Iliman Ndiaye. As much as Richy got painted as the villain for that deal falling out, Ndiaye actually chose Man City over Spurs, which is understandable after how badly Tottenham played against Newcastle United and Brentford just prior, and it was Tottenham who rejected a later offer from Mohamed Salah's Trabzonspor in the Turkish Super Lig.

Since then, Roberto De Zerbi has continued his sparring with Richarlison and even left him off the senior squad as Spurs scramble for a final solution to axe Richy. They have created so much bad blood on De Zerbi's behalf that now it is impossible to envision Richarlison playing a single game for Spurs going forward, even if he is not transferred to Brazil before their window ends, and that's quite the fall after he led the team with 11 Premier League goals last season and to relegation safety.

Perhaps the Mykhaylo Mudryk injury is the first sign of De Zerbi, deep down, having some regret about freezing out Richarlison. Because he is now short handed in the attack. If he moves Omar Marmoush for left wing depth, then the only striker he has in the squad is Dominic Solanke. Between the left wing and striker positions, he only has three players who can be a No. 9 or invert as a left winger to score goals. Maybe De Zerbi's own hot headedness got in the way of sensible business, because, unfortunately, Mudryk's first injury may not even be his last if he is already down for a significant period of time.

Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are keeping tabs on the Al Hilal striker Mohamed Kader Meite, according to Football 360.

The 18-year-old is highly rated, and he has a bright future ahead of him. It remains to be seen whether Premier League clubs are prepared to make a move for him.

Mohamed Kader Meite attracts Premier League interest

The Saudi Arabian outfit views him as a long-term prospect and does not need to sell him for funds. Premier League clubs might have to come forward with a big offer to convince them.

Meanwhile, the opportunity to play in England could be exciting for the 18-year-old as well. It would be a step up in his career. Regular football in the Premier League could accelerate his development and help him fulfil his tremendous potential.

Arsenal need more depth in the attacking unit, and the 18-year-old could compete with Viktor Gyokeres for the starting spot. At Manchester United, he could compete with Benjamin Sesko.

Tottenham have recently signed Omar Marmoush to compete with Dominic Solanke in the attack, and it might be difficult for them to accommodate the 18-year-old.

Tottenham vs. Everton: Predicted starting 11 as Spurs seek their first win - LiveScore
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a difficult start to the 2026/27 Premier League season, losing their first two matches against Brentford and Newcastle United by a combined 5-0 score line before drawing Nottingham Forest last weekend 0-0.

This weekend, Everton beckon, and Spurs will be hoping that the same team they beat to survive Premier League relegation last season on Matchday 38 will yield them their first win of the new campaign. Here is a look at how Roberto De Zerbi could line his team up.

Defense: GK Antonin Kinsky - LB Destiny Udogie - CB Micky van de Ven - CB Jan Paul van Hecke - RB Pedro Porro

There is no question that this is going to be the best defense for Tottenham going forward, and while Marcos Senesi gave Spurs something to think about on Matchday 1 when he outplayed Jan Paul van Hecke, the Dutch international has improved since then and looked amazing last weekend as a pair with his national teammate Micky van de Ven vs. Nottingham Forest. But the real key will be a fully fit Destiny Udogie, who is hoping to play more than 60 minutes soon.

Midfield: DM Rodrigo Bentancur - DM Sandro Tonali - AM Mateus Fernandes

James Maddison should be able to play this weekend after dislocating his shoulder on Matchday 1 as a second half substitute in the brutal loss to Brentford, but he has not started a game for Tottenham since his ACL tear at the end of the 2024/25 season. After this latest injury, Spurs will likely ease him back, with Mateus Fernandes resuming his duties as a makeshift No. 10 following Conor Gallagher's second poor performance in that role vs. Forest. But this midfield trio should be the strength of the team, as all three have looked great in their last starts, with Sandro Tonali improving greatly last weekend.

Forwards: LW Savio - CF Omar Marmoush - RW Mohammed Kudus

Although Roberto De Zerbi could potentially start Savio as an inverted winger and leave off Mohammed Kudus, who did not look sharp at all last weekend, Mathys Tel has been so terrible in the last two games that it would be a shock if he starts again. Omar Marmoush, Kudus, and Savio are Spurs best attacking trio right now, no doubt, and fans will be excited to see Savio's first start of the season now that he should be close to fully fit.

Richarlison launches Tottenham contract fight amid desperate new push to ESCAPE De Zerbi nightmare

Richarlison launches Tottenham contract fight amid desperate new push to ESCAPE De Zerbi nightmare - LiveScore
Description

Richarlison has taken his Tottenham Hotspur situation to the next level by consulting lawyers over a potential move to terminate his contract and leave the club for free, TEAMtalk understands.

The Brazil international is now exploring whether he can argue that Tottenham are preventing him from practising his profession after leaving Roberto De Zerbi cruelly decided to leave the 29-year-old out of the club’s Premier League squad, leaving him facing a period of time without first-team football.

Indeed, sources have learned that Richarlison and his representatives have held talks with a legal team as they examine whether there is a route to cancel his Spurs contract through FIFA.

Tottenham do not accept that he has grounds to walk away from the club, but Richarlison believes his current situation is untenable.

The 29-year-old was left out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad after turning down a return to Everton during the English transfer window, and that decision infuriated Spurs, we are told.

Terms were all but in place for Richarlison to return to his former club, with Tottenham keen to move him on after making it clear he was no longer part of their plans and with De Zerbi having sanctioned the move.

But Richarlison decided he did not want to go, and he is now paying the price for that decision, with his omission from the Premier League squad meaning he cannot play in the competition until January at the earliest.

TEAMtalk understands Tottenham are hugely frustrated by the situation. Spurs were prepared to let Richarlison leave and had gone some way towards facilitating his departure, only for the player to reject the move.

As a result, the dispute could become a legal one. Richarlison’s camp are understood to be looking closely at the case of fellow Brazil international Renan Lodi, who successfully took unilateral action against Al-Hilal after being excluded from their Saudi Pro League registration squad…

Richarlison to follow Lodi example as he seeks Spurs solution

Lodi terminated his contract with the Saudi club in September 2025 after being left out because of the league’s foreign-player restrictions.

The defender said he had tried for several weeks to find an amicable solution with Al-Hilal but received no response before deciding to assert his rights as a worker.

Al-Hilal subsequently confirmed receipt of Lodi’s termination letter after he had travelled to Brazil and threatened legal action to protect the club’s interests. That case is now firmly on Richarlison’s radar.

The Tottenham forward’s argument is that being contracted to a club while simultaneously being prevented from playing could amount to being denied the opportunity to practise his profession.

Spurs strongly disagree, but TEAMtalk understands Richarlison is now taking the matter further, and his representatives are investigating whether the Lodi case can provide a precedent for his own situation.

The timing is significant as Richarlison has already seen two moves fail to materialise.

His proposed return to Everton collapsed after he decided against leaving, despite Tottenham making it clear they were willing to sanction the transfer. A move to big-spending Turkish club Trabzonspor has also failed to come off.

Vasco da Gama, meanwhile, remain ready to offer Richarlison a route back to Brazil, as TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month, and have held talks.

But there is a sticking point as Richarlison wants to leave Tottenham as a free agent and then have the ability to potentially move in January again after a spell with Vasco.

His current Spurs contract runs until the end of the season, but his camp are now exploring whether they can bring that agreement to an early end.

Paul Scholes has a gentle James Maddison reminder Tottenham hope comes true

Paul Scholes has a gentle James Maddison reminder Tottenham hope comes true - LiveScore
Description

James Maddison has not started a game for Tottenham Hotspur since the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season when he tore his ACL, and though he returned to the team months ago down the home stretch of a tense relegation fight, he has still not started a match - not even in the preseason.

And after dislocating his shoulder on Matchday 1 in the second half while coming off the bench in a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of London rivals Brentford, Madders's future is still up in the air. But there is hope he will be back soon with Everton on the horizon.

Tottenham clearly missed Maddison and that playmaking presence against Nottingham Forest, as Sandro Tonali improved alongside a stalwart defense and an even better Rodrigo Bentancur at the base of the Lilywhite midfield. Yet Spurs could not score both due to a combination of poor play from all three of the starting forwards, as well as a lack of any creativity from Conor Gallagher in the No. 10 role, which was, of course, the case against Brentford, too.

Tottenham need to believe in better days ahead

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes hit the nail on the head by saying that Tottenham Hotspur need to play the positive football they should be under Roberto De Zerbi and that James Maddison is a player who will really help them do that.

Scholes said, via Chris Cowlin, “I like him. He is a good footballer. He makes the team play good football, you know what I mean. They need to get him involved somehow. Tottenham is a very negative place at the minute, and it has been for two or three years. If you get two or three wins put together, then all of a sudden you are off and running. I think they will be fine.”

The last part is also very important to Tottenham fans, and that is an assurance from a pundit with ties to another Premier League Big Six club sharing a positive outlook for Spurs. They have only gotten one point in their first three games to start the 2026/27 season without a single goal, and that is "very negative".

Just like how a striker needs that first goal and the rest will flow out of the proverbial ketchup bottle that Cristiano Ronaldo once talked about, Tottenham just need that first win to get the momentum going. Getting their best creator back in the lineup will be huge for that.
