Description

Richarlison has taken his Tottenham Hotspur situation to the next level by consulting lawyers over a potential move to terminate his contract and leave the club for free, TEAMtalk understands.

The Brazil international is now exploring whether he can argue that Tottenham are preventing him from practising his profession after leaving Roberto De Zerbi cruelly decided to leave the 29-year-old out of the club’s Premier League squad, leaving him facing a period of time without first-team football.

Indeed, sources have learned that Richarlison and his representatives have held talks with a legal team as they examine whether there is a route to cancel his Spurs contract through FIFA.

Tottenham do not accept that he has grounds to walk away from the club, but Richarlison believes his current situation is untenable.

The 29-year-old was left out of Tottenham’s Premier League squad after turning down a return to Everton during the English transfer window, and that decision infuriated Spurs, we are told.

Terms were all but in place for Richarlison to return to his former club, with Tottenham keen to move him on after making it clear he was no longer part of their plans and with De Zerbi having sanctioned the move.

But Richarlison decided he did not want to go, and he is now paying the price for that decision, with his omission from the Premier League squad meaning he cannot play in the competition until January at the earliest.

TEAMtalk understands Tottenham are hugely frustrated by the situation. Spurs were prepared to let Richarlison leave and had gone some way towards facilitating his departure, only for the player to reject the move.

As a result, the dispute could become a legal one. Richarlison’s camp are understood to be looking closely at the case of fellow Brazil international Renan Lodi, who successfully took unilateral action against Al-Hilal after being excluded from their Saudi Pro League registration squad…

Richarlison to follow Lodi example as he seeks Spurs solution

Lodi terminated his contract with the Saudi club in September 2025 after being left out because of the league’s foreign-player restrictions.

The defender said he had tried for several weeks to find an amicable solution with Al-Hilal but received no response before deciding to assert his rights as a worker.

Al-Hilal subsequently confirmed receipt of Lodi’s termination letter after he had travelled to Brazil and threatened legal action to protect the club’s interests. That case is now firmly on Richarlison’s radar.

The Tottenham forward’s argument is that being contracted to a club while simultaneously being prevented from playing could amount to being denied the opportunity to practise his profession.

Spurs strongly disagree, but TEAMtalk understands Richarlison is now taking the matter further, and his representatives are investigating whether the Lodi case can provide a precedent for his own situation.

The timing is significant as Richarlison has already seen two moves fail to materialise.

His proposed return to Everton collapsed after he decided against leaving, despite Tottenham making it clear they were willing to sanction the transfer. A move to big-spending Turkish club Trabzonspor has also failed to come off.

Vasco da Gama, meanwhile, remain ready to offer Richarlison a route back to Brazil, as TEAMtalk revealed earlier this month, and have held talks.

But there is a sticking point as Richarlison wants to leave Tottenham as a free agent and then have the ability to potentially move in January again after a spell with Vasco.

His current Spurs contract runs until the end of the season, but his camp are now exploring whether they can bring that agreement to an early end.

Description

James Maddison has not started a game for Tottenham Hotspur since the end of the 2024/25 Premier League season when he tore his ACL, and though he returned to the team months ago down the home stretch of a tense relegation fight, he has still not started a match - not even in the preseason.

And after dislocating his shoulder on Matchday 1 in the second half while coming off the bench in a 3-0 drubbing at the hands of London rivals Brentford, Madders's future is still up in the air. But there is hope he will be back soon with Everton on the horizon.

Tottenham clearly missed Maddison and that playmaking presence against Nottingham Forest, as Sandro Tonali improved alongside a stalwart defense and an even better Rodrigo Bentancur at the base of the Lilywhite midfield. Yet Spurs could not score both due to a combination of poor play from all three of the starting forwards, as well as a lack of any creativity from Conor Gallagher in the No. 10 role, which was, of course, the case against Brentford, too.

Tottenham need to believe in better days ahead

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes hit the nail on the head by saying that Tottenham Hotspur need to play the positive football they should be under Roberto De Zerbi and that James Maddison is a player who will really help them do that.

Scholes said, via Chris Cowlin, “I like him. He is a good footballer. He makes the team play good football, you know what I mean. They need to get him involved somehow. Tottenham is a very negative place at the minute, and it has been for two or three years. If you get two or three wins put together, then all of a sudden you are off and running. I think they will be fine.”

The last part is also very important to Tottenham fans, and that is an assurance from a pundit with ties to another Premier League Big Six club sharing a positive outlook for Spurs. They have only gotten one point in their first three games to start the 2026/27 season without a single goal, and that is "very negative".

Just like how a striker needs that first goal and the rest will flow out of the proverbial ketchup bottle that Cristiano Ronaldo once talked about, Tottenham just need that first win to get the momentum going. Getting their best creator back in the lineup will be huge for that.

Mauricio Pochettino: Give Tottenham 2016–17 Title Because Chelsea Broke Rules

Mauricio Pochettino: Give Tottenham 2016–17 Title Because Chelsea Broke Rules - LiveScore
Description

“The Chelsea fans will be upset with me because I’m saying this,” Mauricio Pochettino admitted before stating his belief that his former employers should be stripped of their 2016–17 Premier League title win because of breaching financial rules.

Pochettino is of the opinion that the Tottenham Hotspur side he was managing should be named as winners instead, having finished that season as runners-up. Chelsea were fined £10 million ($13.6 million at current market rate) and given a suspended transfer ban after breaching 74 rules relating to agent regulations between 2011 and 2018, but crucially received no on-field sanctions.

“I’ve said that we should win one title, one Premier League,” Pochettino said to reporters. “We should have been awarded it. If that was true, and that happened, for sure we deserve to be champions for that year. Because we were the second best.”

Tottenham lost just four games that season, picking up 86 points to finish comfortably ahead of Manchester City and Liverpool in third and fourth. Harry Kane and Dele Alli held the keys to Spurs’ success, scoring 47 goals between them as Kane picked up the Golden Boot award.

Chelsea, meanwhile, finished seven points ahead on 93, winning the title in Antonio Conte’s first season in charge after the Italian switched to a back three after a desperately disappointing defeat at rivals Arsenal.

“They were punished, they admitted (it), so that’s it,” Pochettino continued of the charges Chelsea admitted to. “The title should be for the team that was second. We didn’t compete with the same rules. OK, now we can say that they scored goals, they won games. But it’s completely fair to say that we didn’t compete before the start of the season with the same card.

“Maybe with the same rules, if we apply the same things, maybe we could have signed some players that would have made the team better, or scored more goals. It’s not me complaining. It’s the truth.”

Pochettino’s View if Tottenham Had Been the Rule Breakers

Pochettino made clear that his viewpoint was in no way intended to take anything away from Chelsea’s performances on the pitch, nor Conte, who he proclaimed a “great coach”. But he added that “if you don’t punish the way that you need to punish” then “what is being promoted and incentivized is to break the rules.”

“If we were at Tottenham and broke the rules, I would admit the same and say, ‘Look, we don’t deserve the title because we broke the rules’.” he added. “It’s impossible if only some clubs play with offside and another plays with no offside. Or one plays with VAR and another plays with no VAR. No. For everyone, it needs to be the same rules, and the capacity to create the best team.”

Pochettino would not a win trophy with Tottenham before being sacked in November 2019, though he did reach the final of the Champions League with the Lilywhites—a competition the club have failed to qualify for regularly since his departure from north London.

‘It’s Different’—Return to Tottenham Not Out of the Question

Pochettino would go on to manage Chelsea for a season before parting ways—the move was poorly received by both sets of supporters—but did admit that Tottenham had been in contact over a potential return in the summer, though nothing came to pass because of his commitments with the United States men’s national team.

“They called all the coaches! Free and not free!” Pochettino said. “The problem was that the timings were never the best. When I was free, I never received a contact and then when I was working, I received a contact, but I cannot make the decision to come back. It was a little bit unlucky. But maybe one day the stars will align and it can happen. If I was free, of course, I would come. But I wasn’t free. I was preparing for the World Cup.

Pochettino recently signed a new long-term contract with the USMNT, taking him through to the end of the 2030 World Cup, but the 54-year-old stated this particular deal “is different” because either party can choose to end the relationship early if things don’t go well at the Copa América or Gold Cup. He added that his team are “excited” about what’s ahead with the national team and “are thinking of spending four years until the next World Cup.”

Mauricio Pochettino has claimed Tottenham should have been awarded the 2017 Premier League title after rivals Chelsea admitted to breaching financial rules.

The Blues, who beat Tottenham to the title in the 2016-17 season, were fined £10m this summer after admitting to making secret payments to agents between 2011 and 2018.

Chelsea admitted to paying up to £47m to unregistered agents and third-parties over the signings of several key players during that period, including to star forward Eden Hazard.

The breaches took place during the Roman Abramovich era and Chelsea’s new owners, BlueCo, self-reported them following the club’s takeover in 2022 – but they did not face sporting sanctions.

But what if they had been? During a wide-ranging interview, Pochettino said title rivals Tottenham and Chelsea “didn’t compete with the same rules” – and other clubs may feel similarly.

“Maybe we could’ve signed some players that would have made the team better or scored more goals,” Pochettino said. “It’s not me complaining. It’s the truth.”

FA Cup - 2011-12

Runners-up: Liverpool

This was right at the start of the period where Chelsea faced sanctions from the Premier League, while the Stamford Bridge club were also charged by the FA for alleged breaches of the governing body’s rules around agent regulations, primarily relating to the seasons between 2010/11 and 2015/16. The 2012 FA Cup final, where Chelsea defeated Liverpool 2-1, featured the old guard of John Terry, Frank Lampard and Didier Drogba, but the opening goal at Wembley was scored by Ramires, the Brazilian midfielder who joined in 2010 from Benfica and whose transfer subsequently fell under investigation.

Carabao Cup - 2014-15

Runners-up: Tottenham Hotspur

You could forgive Mauricio Pochettino for not mentioning the 2014-15 Carabao Cup in the same breath as the 2016-17 Premier League title, but it’s still a trophy where Spurs ultimately finished runners-up to their London rivals. John Terry and Diego Costa scored for the Blues at Wembley as Chelsea won their first trophy under Jose Mourinho’s second spell at the club. Eden Hazard, Willian and Ramires all played in the final and they were among the players whose signings were found to have been involved in the making of secret payments to agents.

Premier League - 2014-15

Runners-up: Manchester City

Chelsea won the title at a canter in Mourinho’s second season of his return, with the signings of Cesc Fabregas and Diego Costa proving pivotal. Eden Hazard was the player of the year and midfielder Nemanja Matic was named in the team of the year; the signing of Matic, from Benfica in January 2014, was another transfer that fell under the Premier League’s investigation. Manchester City never felt like true challengers this season. Manchester City, however, continue to await the verdict of the hearing into their own financial charges. The Premier League have City’s alleged rule-breaking took place between 2009 and 2018. City have always strenuously denied the charges. Arsenal finished third that season.

Premier League - 2016-17

Runners-up: Tottenham Hotspur

If there was a season for Tottenham to win the Premier League under Mauricio Pochettino, this would have been it. Tottenham went unbeaten at home in their last season at White Hart Lane, while scoring more goals than Chelsea and conceding fewer than the eventual champions. They finished the season with a club-record 86 points. “For sure, we [Tottenham] deserve to be champions for that year because we were second best,” Pochettino. “We should have been awarded it. We should win one title, one Premier League. They [Chelsea] were punished, they admitted it, so that’s it. The title should be for the team that was second. It’s not me complaining, it’s the truth. We didn’t compete with the same rules. The Chelsea fans will be upset with me because I’m saying this. But if we were at Tottenham and broke the rules, I’d admit the same and say ‘look, we don’t deserve the title because we broke the rules’.”

While Pochettino praised Antonio Conte’s impact at Chelsea, with the Italian leading the Stamford Bridge to the title in his first season in English football, a year after the Blues had finished 10th, the Argentina said he had “no doubt” that Eden Hazard once again made the difference that season. The Belgian winger scored 16 Premier League goals that season while centre-back David Luiz, another Chelsea player whose transfer to the club fell under the Premier League’s investigation, having joined the Blues from Benfica in 2011 and Paris Saint-Germain in 2016, had his finest season in English football as part of Conte’s back-three.

FA Cup - 2017-18

Runners-up: Manchester United

A second FA Cup final falls under the period that was investigated by the FA and Premier League. Eden Hazard scored a first-half penalty as Antonio Conte’s Chelsea defeated Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United. Hazard would also scored in Chelsea’s 4-1 win over Arsenal in the Europa League final the following the year. Under Roman Abramovich’s 19-year ownership, between 2003 and 2022, Chelsea won 21 major trophies, including two Champions Leagues, five Premier Leagues, five FA Cups, two League Cups and two Europa Leagues.

Tottenham fans are tucking away Roberto De Zerbi's handling of Richarlison to bring up later - LiveScore
Description

The Richarlison saga soured the end of the summer 2026 transfer window for Tottenham Hotspur, and with most of the markets closed, save for Brazil and a couple of others, Spurs are now scrambling to find another solution for the Brazilian international.

His deal with Everton collapsed and Richy was made out to be the villain in Spurs not signing Iliman Ndiaye, but as the Senegalese international himself stated, he never really had any intention of choosing Tottenham over Manchester City. So Richarlison was not to blame for that deal falling through, nor can Spurs fans reasonably blame him for not wanting to take a lower salary to play for Everton.

Richarlison had accepted the following deal to go to Trabzonspor, but it was actually Spurs who rejected the transfer fee from the Turkish Super Lig club for being too low. And now they risk losing a sellable asset coming off an 11 goal Premier League season for free, as Richy can sign a pre contract deal this winter to leave as a free agent in the summer 2027 transfer market to any club.

Richarlison didn't need to be put in this position

But what is making Tottenham Hotspur fans wary is how the fallout proceeded. Because say what you want about Richarlison on the pitch in terms of his falling over and inconsistency, but he is a player who has always been fully COYS, even rejecting transfers to other clubs for bigger salaries in the past. And he never gave up on the team last season; Spurs would not have survived the Premier League relegation fight without him, that's for sure.

Now, Tottenham do need to move on from Richy at some point and should have been able to get a fee from him this summer, but that's no reason to ostracize Richarlison. There has been a war of words between Richarlison and Roberto De Zerbi in the media, with one side saying that Richy wanted to leave and the other side saying that he wantd to stay.

It's a messy situation, and while Tottenham fans are not about to begin to take sides and cause any disharmony in the squad, they are tucking away this little, unnecessary public quarrel between a beloved backup in Richarlison and a charismatic but unruly manager in De Zerbi.

Because if things start to fall apart later on in the year like they did at Brighton, Marseille, and other posts De Zerbi coached at, Tottenham fans may just look back on what De Zerbi did with Richarlison in casting him out as the first straw in the polarizing manager's reign.

There is only one word to describe Destiny Udogie at this point - LiveScore
Description

Tottenham Hotspur are gearing up for a statement game against Everton this weekend after failing to score in all three of their first Premier League matches of the 2026/27 season, extracting their sole point last weekend in a 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest.

The integration of new stars like Savio and Omar Marmoush is one big selling point that things are going to get better for Spurs, but the returns of key players from last season like Mohammed Kudus and Destiny Udogie to full fitness are other big storylines to watch for the Lilywhites.

With all the attention of the new faces or the star names in the attack like James Maddison and Kudus, it feels like Udogie has become underrated, including around N17. Perhaps it's because so many are missing World Cup hero Djed Spence or hopeful that Liverpool legend Andy Robertson can have a major impact on the team in 2026/27, but it feels like Udogie has become quite overlooked.

Destiny Udogie is great on both offense and defense

But as much as some fans are pining over the sale of Spence after his big summer with England, it can't be forgotten that Destiny Udogie soundly outplayed Spence in the 2025/26 Premier League campaign - and the only reason why that isn't an obvious fact is Udogie's one real Achilles' heel, which is his injury history.

Injuries plagued Udogie last season, but when he was healthy, he was one of the best ball winners and progressive left backs in the Premier League. And that's not new territory for Udogie. See, as much as Djed Spence was touted for his defending and ability to win the ball, Udogie's numbers have actually always been better; it's just that he doesn't get as much credit since people fixate on the fact that he's way better driving the ball forward than Spence, meaning they call Udogie the "offensive" fullback and Spence the "defensive" one when the Italian international is better at both.

Look at the numbers. In his last healthy season in 2024/25, Udogie was averaging a whopping three tackles per game with just 0.6 dribbles completed allowed per match, which is a pretty insane 5:1 ratio for a fullback, particularly a fullback averaging 1.5 fouls drawn per game.

What Tottenham Hotspur need to be doing with their underrated fullback is getting his key passes and creative numbers backup from where they were at Udinese in Serie A. And that will come with better forward play from the acquistions of Omar Marmoush and Savio.

Omar Marmoush showed his ugly side against Nottingham Forest

Omar Marmoush showed his ugly side against Nottingham Forest - LiveScore
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have high hopes for new forward signing Omar Marmoush, who can play on either the left wing or in a center forward position. Spurs have started him in the latter spot in his first two games over Dominic Solanke, in the hopes that he can be the answer to their goal scoring problem, as Solanke's own track record at Tottenham since coming over after what may have been a fluke 19 goal 2023/24 season with Bournemouth has been less than impressive.

Marmoush did not score in the 2-0 loss to Newcastle United, but he was highly promising, creating three chances and winning three dribbles in a dynamic debut that showed flashes of that lightening in a bottle he captured in the 2024/25 season that made Manchester City buy him that winter transfer window from Eintracht Frankfurt.

But Marmoush struggled badly against Nottingham Forest in a 0-0 draw. He was just as culpable as Mathys Tel on the ball, turning the ball over frequently, and it almost felt, that like the younger Tel, Marmoush was the victim of trying to do too much.

Omar Marmoush missed a lot of chances

Not only did he show a bit of his inexperience as a top level starter in the Premier League - as he was mostly on the bench last season at Man City - but he also squandered quite a few chances. He did not pass when he should have passed, and his finishing chops were that of a player who, indeed, was converted to play striker and not necessarily a natural born No. 9.

Tottenham Hotspur saw the ugly side of Omar Marmoush against Nottingham Forest. Every player, except maybe legends like Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, has one, and Marmoush is not a perfect player, which is why Manchester City were even open to selling him to another Premier League Big Six club in the first place.

What Roberto De Zerbi and Spurs have to do in weighing his performance against Nottingham Forest is to trend how he does as a center forward in the next games, especially with better support as Mohammed Kudus and Destiny Udogie round into fitness and Savio and James Maddison are able to return to the starting lineup.

These are big boosts around Marmoush that should help the Egyptian international increase his attacking output, but De Zerbi may have to worry that the Forest performance is a sign that being the No. 9 may not be the right fit for the new signing.

Ange Postecoglou is quietly the biggest winner from Roberto De Zerbi's slow start - LiveScore
Description

Ange Postecoglou is busy enjoying his life in the Saudi Pro League as Cristiano Ronaldo's new manager at Al Nassr, and although it is early days, he is already well on his way to becoming a cult hero there, just as he became at Tottenham Hotspur.

Big Ange is but a fleeting memory to many Spurs fans with Roberto De Zerbi in charge, as the latter is viewed as a superior tactical manager and also helped Spurs escape relegation last season. But there is still a deep appreciation for what Postecoglou did during his time at N17, particularly since he was never backed by Daniel Levy and the club - not at all like Spurs have backed De Zerbi this summer a year after Levy's departure - yet still brought home the Europa League trophy after 41 years without European silverware.

De Zerbi's slow start to the 2026/27 Premier League season is also bringing up another point about Postecoglou that needs to be appreciated, because while he did fizzle out in the end and finished 17th in the Premier League in his final season, his hot start was pretty historic.

Fast vs. slow starts aren't everything, just ask Mauricio Pochettino

As a fan pointed out on Reddit, in his first 10 games as Tottenham Hotspur manager, Ange Postecoglou took home 26 points, more than anyone else since Mauricio Pochettino. Antonio Conte was the only other manager with at least 20 points in 10 (21 points, to be exact). And of the managers who actually completed 10 games, De Zerbi is actually the worst at 12 points. Though it is worth noting that the second worst also turned out to be the best manager on the list: Poch himself with a meager 14 points in 10 games.

Whlie that stat on Pochettino points out that fast vs. slow starts don't actually mean all that much when it comes to a manager's long term success - and maybe Ange is further proof of that, too - it is still nonetheless impressive to think back to how fast Postecoglou started things off as manager.

Now, Roberto De Zerbi did get hurt by inheriting a team doomed for relegation, but Postecoglou also inherited a Tottenham team that was in turmoil itself and had just lost its greatest ever player in Harry Kane. So even considering the two situations, what Postecoglou did was awesome and seems to be getting more praise nowadays from fans, too.

Mathys Tel can no longer be called a scapegoat - LiveScore
Description

During the 2025/26 Premier League season, there were a lot of disappointing individual performances that led to Tottenham Hotspur being relegated, but young left winger Mathys Tel was not one of them. He scored some important goals against the likes of Leeds United and Manchester United that really did prove crucial at the end of the season, and along with Archie Gray, he was one of only a few players who did not give up on the team when they were at their worst.

At that time, criticizing Tel for not being a top level left winger was indeed a form of scapegoating, because nobody reasonably thought that the former Bayern Munich man would be able to play at that level last season. And for what should have been reasonably expected from a young prospect, Tel did pretty well, and had Thomas Frank not jerked him in and out of the starting lineup despite being his only real option in lieu of an actual left winger signing, he may have done better.

Mathys Tel has been a problem for Tottenham lately

But the 2026/27 Premier League season is a new campaign with incoming players, more expectations, and a better manager in Roberto De Zerbi. Regardless of all of that, how Mathys Tel performed in his last two starts on the left wing against Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest is simply inexcusable.

Despite Tottenham Hotspur playing a better game in the midfield, buoyed by the continued excellence of a resurgent Rodrigo Bentancur, Spurs were unable to score against either the Magpies or Forest. And while Tel was far from the only player to disappoint in the attacking trident, he was, without a doubt, the worst of the bunch despite coming off a fabulous offseason in which he was the standout player for Tottenham in the friendly fixtures.

Now, two terrible games does not a bust make, but at this point, calling Tel a scapegoat no longer applies. Because he is getting his opportunities under Roberto De Zerbi and downright failing to make the most of them. Spurs need to see more from the young Frenchman as he heads into his second full season at the club, and there are going to be real expectations now that the top six is being discussed as a goal for the team's final standing - and now that Omar Marmoush, Savio, and even Mykhaylo Mudryk are a part of the squad after a productive summer transfer window.

Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both had representatives in Belgium on Tuesday evening to watch Club Brugge striker Nicolo Tresoldi, TEAMtalk understands, with the German Under-21 international emerging as one of Europe’s most coveted young forwards.

Tresoldi featured against Aston Villa as Brugge suffered a 3-2 defeat, but the 22-year-old still made his mark by converting from the penalty spot.

United’s delegation also used the trip to continue their work on left-back Joaquin Seys, another Brugge player they enquired about during the summer.

We can confirm Tottenham were also in Belgium to carry out further work on Tresoldi, who remains high on their radar.

Spurs completed many of their preferred deals during the summer, but Roberto De Zerbi is keen to add another striker and the German could develop into a strong option for the club.

Tresoldi has rapidly established himself as one of the most exciting attacking prospects in Europe since moving from Hannover to Brugge.

He scored 23 goals last season, and his performances sparked considerable interest across the continent, with Barcelona among the clubs to hold talks over a potential move.

Man Utd to offer Lisandro Martinez new contract on two conditions

Man Utd, Tottenham in the mix to sign Nicolo Tresoldi

Despite the interest over the summer, Tresoldi remained in Belgium and has continued to build his reputation at Brugge.

His form and age profile mean he is now being watched closely by Premier League clubs, with both United and Spurs taking the opportunity to assess him at first hand on Tuesday.

United failed to add a forward over the summer and continue to assess attacking options for the future.

Joshua Zirkzee’s future at Old Trafford remains in doubt after failing to force his way into Michael Carrick’s starting XI.

United’s position on the Dutchman remains the same – they won’t let him go without first signing a replacement. Tresoldi could be that player.

Tottenham’s interest, meanwhile, is being driven by De Zerbi’s desire for further competition and depth up front, something that has been further highlighted by the saga surrounding Richarlison, who hasn’t even been named in the club’s Premier League squad.

Tresoldi’s latest outing has therefore provided another opportunity for both clubs to gather information on a player who could yet become a serious target in the future.

If he continues his impressive form for Bruggle, it seems only a matter of time before Tresoldi makes a high-profile switch to one of Europe’s top sides.
