Tottenham have easy Joao Palhinha transfer decision after heroics in relegation fight - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Joao Palhinha wears his heart on his sleeve.

As he hurdled the advertising boards to celebrate with Tottenham Hotspur’s away end at Molineux, there was no doubting his passion. This was sheer, unfiltered jubilation not seen anywhere near enough at the club this season.

You also certainly wouldn’t have known that he could find himself on the move again in the summer. This is the strange scenario Spurs are facing, in which loan players show more commitment and desire than those who have been sporting the white jersey for years.

After the final whistle blew, confirming Spurs’ first win of 2026 and breathing new life into their relegation fight, Palhinha and Pedro Porro embraced, lost in the unbridled joy and relief of it all. Just when all hope was lost, the midfielder had brought them back from the brink.

It was a truly significant moment, but regardless of whether Tottenham stay in the Premier League or not, there remain major question marks over Palhinha’s future.

Tottenham still split over Joao Palhinha

Hours after his heroics against Wolves, there was a notable change in stance from Spurs. Once believed to be leaning toward allowing him to return to Bayern Munich in the summer, they are now likely to hold fresh talks with the Bundesliga club to renegotiate a cheaper deal.

Despite Palhinha making 41 appearances in all competitions this season, Spurs don’t want to pay the £27m price tag already agreed last summer. As such, they would be willing to pull out of negotiations entirely and ship the 30-year-old back out if Bayern don’t play ball.

It promises to be an intriguing back-and-forth. Vincent Kompany will be keen to sell him, knowing that the Bavarian heavyweights can likely ask for a significant amount after his recent heroics. First, though, Tottenham must truly weigh up whether the swoop is worth it.

Supporters are divided over him. In one camp, Palhinha is viewed as an effective midfield stopper, someone who can step in to cover the black hole in the centre of the park that numerous managers were unable to fix. He is renowned for snapping into tackles.

At the time of his arrival, he was still viewed as one of the continent’s best defensive midfielders, primarily due to his successful stint at Fulham between 2022 and 2024.

However, to others, Spurs had signed a player who couldn’t cut it at Bayern Munich. They argued that the fact that the Bundesliga champions were only too happy to move him pointed to another unambitious piece of business from a club littered with them.

Despite his winning goal against Wolves and an all-action cameo from the bench, there is still no unanimity. The big question, then, is what Tottenham do now.

Why Palhinha is perfect for Roberto De Zerbi

In this humble writer’s opinion, Spurs would do well to sign Palhinha if they can negotiate his valuation downward. That is because, at least on paper, he is a perfect fit for this new, ambitious era under Roberto De Zerbi. This would be a low-cost, low-risk negotiation.

Historically, De Zerbi’s teams have been instructed to use the ball to bait a press before then attacking in numbers, making use of space in behind. There is a focus on gambling rather than passivity, which typically results in plenty of goals at both ends of the pitch.

One criticism often levelled at the 46-year-old is the defensive aspect of this system, though, which can leave the centre of the pitch too open. While originally brought in to be Thomas Frank’s midfield enforcer, Palhinha has proven he can also do the same job under De Zerbi.

The proof is in his numbers.

He has made the second most tackles in the Premier League this season, with 98. His habit of dangling out a leg and pickpocketing an opponent was just as crucial during his stint at Fulham, leading to them finishing in the top 10 for the first time since 2021.

Then, he had also charted top across Europe’s so-called ‘Big Five’ leagues for tackles in both of his campaigns at Craven Cottage (148 and 152). Tottenham were on the hunt for security and believed he would be able to provide it, and consequently, he has been a rare positive.

There are, of course, drawbacks. Palhinha is relatively poor on the ball and known to take the easy option in possession, which has held Spurs back during build-up. But he is more than making up for that with crucial, potentially decisive, interventions at the other end.

De Zerbi and Tottenham will have a big decision to make over the summer, but it would be sensible to look to keep Palhinha around, especially if he helps to secure their survival.

Jamie Carragher names James Maddison as Tottenham’s only hope as relegation lingers - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Jamie Carragher believes James Maddison being back on the field is Tottenham‘s only real hope of avoiding Premier League relegation.

Spurs won for the first time in 2026 at the weekend as they defeated bottom side Wolves 1-0 at Molineux through a Joao Palhinha goal.

However, West Ham’s late 2-1 win against Everton at the London Stadium means the gap on safety remains at two points with four games to play.

Maddison has been back among the substitutes for Spurs’ last two games, but he has not played any football this season.

As the England international closes in on his return from injury, Carragher has talked up his importance to Roberto De Zerbi‘s aim of staying up.

‘James Maddison is Tottenham’s Jarrod Bowen’

De Zerbi revealed ahead of the Wolves game that, despite Maddison being part of Spurs’ matchday squad, he is not yet ready to return to action.

Exactly how far off the playmaker’s return is is not known, but hopefully he plays a part as early as next Sunday’s trip to Aston Villa.

If not there are games against Leeds United, Chelsea and Everton to come over the next few weeks.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “James Maddison, I feel, may have to play a role here in keeping Tottenham up.

“He’s the only one that can do something special, like Jarrod Bowen and Morgan Gibbs-White. He’s coming back from a big injury, so we’re talking 15-20 minutes from the bench.

“But he’s the only one I see when looking at that squad that can produce some magic, particularly in those away games.”

Carragher may just be spot on with what he is saying. Tottenham have definitely improved under De Zerbi, and now have four points from the past six to show for it.

But those moments of individual quality are still lacking. In fairness, Xavi Simons has showed he is capable of it of late, but he will not play again this season.

Maddison can save Tottenham – the stats don’t lie

When it comes to Maddison’s influence at Tottenham, the stats do not lie. As per Sofascore data, he was Spurs’ highest-rated player last season with 7.30.

The 29-year-old scored nine times in the Premier League from an expected goals (xG) value of 5.83, showing he was able to outperform the quality of chances generated for him.

It is not just Maddison scoring goals that Spurs miss, but also his ability to create chances for others.

He registered seven assists in the top flight last time out and 1.3 key passes per 90 minutes. For context, Pedro Porro (1.5) is the only Spurs player who can better than this season.

Maddison has 13 goals and 16 assists overall in a Tottenham kit, on top of 108 chances created, which is something Thomas Frank, Igor Tudor and now De Zerbi have each missed.

As Carragher says, getting Maddison on the field for 20 minutes here and there may be all that matters.

That is why De Zerbi has been so eager to get him on the bench, with the Italian knowing the sooner he can release him on the field, the better Spurs’ chances of survival.

Tottenham: Micky van de Ven goal in September could remarkably be what relegates West Ham - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham‘s Premier League relegation battle with fierce rivals West Ham United is set to go right down to the wire.

With fellow strugglers Leeds United and Nottingham Forest finding form, right now it is looking like a straight shootout between Spurs and West Ham.

Tottenham defeated Wolves 1-0 at the weekend through a late Joao Palhinha goal, but the gap on the Hammers in 17th remains two points after their 2-1 win over Everton.

Both teams have four more matches to play this season and are separated by only six goals in terms of the goal difference.

Spurs’ priority is to get as many points on the board as possible, with the win over Wolves at least a starting point, but they may have an advantage over West Ham if things go all the way.

What permutations will be used if Spurs and West Ham finish level?

Given just how tight it has been this season, there is every chance Spurs and West Ham could finish level on points.

If that is the case, goal difference will then be used to determine who stays up and who goes down.

Beyond that – again, there is a good chance this could happen – it then goes on goals scored, which is also tight. Spurs have netted 43 times this season compared to West Ham’s 42.

Should that also be level, it will then come down to the head-to-head records this season. Once again, it is dead level in that regard in terms of results.

So rather remarkably, it would then go down to which side scored the most away goals in this fixtures – a 2-1 win for West Ham at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and a 3-0 win for Spurs at the London Stadium.

That victory at the London Stadium, or more specifically Micky van de Ven’s third goal that didn’t count for much on the face of it at the time, could be what relegates West Ham and keeps Spurs up.

It would be the craziest manner of relegation in English top flight history, but Spurs fans would obviously take it every day of the week.

How did West Ham 0-3 Tottenham pan out

It is easy to forget now, but Spurs climbed up to second place in September when thrashing West Ham in East London.

The Hammers had Tomas Soucek sent off after Pape Matar Sarr had already opened the scoring, before Lucas Bergvall and Van de Ven – as mentioned – found the back of the net.

Bergvall was superb for Tottenham against West Ham as he completed 100 per cent of his dribbles, scored one and assisted another.

Spurs really did dominate proceedings, obviously helped by playing much of the second half with an extra man, as they had 64 per cent of the ball to West Ham’s 36 per cent.

Spurs’ 14 shots equated to an expected goals (xG) value of 1.22, meanwhile, compared to seven and 0.6 for the Hammers respectively.

As for Van de Ven, he registered 3.9 clearances, 0.7 interceptions and 1.2 tackles. More importantly, he scored that third goal that could yet come into play next month.

Tottenham have another issue after ‘unbelievable’ Xavi Simons injury reveal - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham Hotspur have been told they are fighting with an arm behind their back after the extent of Xavi Simons’ injury was confirmed.

The Dutchman is set to be out for the rest of the season and perhaps the start of the new campaign after being forced off against Wolves.

Spurs won the game 1-0, a crucial result in the context of the relegation battle, but the star midfielder was replaced after 63 minutes.

The Lilywhites have revealed on 27 April that he has suffered an anterior cruciate ligament rupture in his right knee and is set to undergo surgery.

Tottenham will miss Simons immensely, as it looked like he had finally started adjusting to English football.

What has been said about Tottenham and Simons injury?

John Wenham can’t believe Tottenham’s luck when it comes to injuries, and fears for the team that may be selected for the clash with Aston Villa.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “The issue will be what kind of team Tottenham can put out at Villa Park.

“To lose Xavi Simons for the season and possibly longer is an unbelievable blow, unlike other clubs where players miss a game or two, ours are ruled out completely.

“We are trying to battle on and stay up, two points adrift at the moment, without the following: Guglielmo Vicario, Cristian Romero, Destiny Udogie, James Maddison, Dejan Kulusevski, Wilson Odobert, Mohammed Kudus, Simons and maybe Dominic Solanke as well

“We are constantly fighting with an arm behind our back, all of those players start for us, we are missing seven or eight of our best players.”

What needs to change at Tottenham?

Tottenham need a serious overhaul of its medical department and training procedures in the summer.

The last two seasons have seen so many players get long-term injuries, which has certainly not helped their league position.

Ange Postecoglou was blamed due to the intensity of his system and the training methods, but the issues have continued after that, under Thomas Frank, Igor Tudor and now Roberto De Zerbi.

Some injuries are a freak accident, but the number that the Lilywhites have gotten in recent years, it has to be something more than that.

Mikey Moore has certainly proven his quality while away from Tottenham Hotspur at Rangers.

There were initial concerns when the winger made a temporary switch to the unstable Ibrox club in the summer.

They were quickly realised when Russell Martin’s side underwent a shocking start to the season while tumbling down the Scottish Premiership table.

Ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl came in and turned things around, much to the benefit of the Spurs youngster.

Moore has been an asset on loan at Rangers and has proven exactly why he should be featuring for the Lilywhites with his latest example of national recognition.

Mikey Moore nominated for Scotland PFA award at Rangers

The 18-year-old is seen as arguably the most exciting prospect in North London after breaking through into the first team as a teenager.

He has already made 21 senior appearances in N17, but still opted to depart on loan for the current campaign.

Things have ultimately worked out at Ibrox as he continues to be utilised as a regular, even ahead of more senior options in Govan.

That has seen the Englishman help turn the tide with the Gers as they go in search of a first Premiership title since 2021.

The Scottish PFA have recognised that impact and have named the forward in their Young Player of the Year nominees for the 2025-26 season.

He features alongside Barney Stewart (Falkirk), Findlay Marshall (Dundee) and Luke Graham (Arbroath) for the award.

Moore has certainly impressed at Rangers and has proven exactly why he is so highly rated at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Moore ready to shine for Tottenham

There was a feeling that the teenager wasn’t ready to make a first-team impact in the Premier League this campaign despite his talents.

A loan departure was agreed, but the Lilywhites have gone on to have a shocking season, while Moore has shone in Glasgow.

He has contributed to nine goals across all competitions and has featured in 29 Scottish Premiership matches for a side fighting for the title.

In those games, he has created 34 chances, completed 44 dribbles, and got amongst it by winning 94 duels at Ibrox.

That has all culminated in a Young Player of the Year award nomination, as the likes of Mathys Tel, Richarlison and Randal Kolo Muani struggle on the flanks in N17.

Tottenham relegation: Injuries to keep ENIC wage bill through the roof with Xavi Simons set to stay

Tottenham relegation: Injuries to keep ENIC wage bill through the roof with Xavi Simons set to stay - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham Hotspur may find it difficult to shift some of their big earners, like Xavi Simons, if they get relegated from the Premier League.

Roberto De Zerbi grabbed his first win as Tottenham boss when they edged already-relegated Wolves in a nervy 1-0 affair at Molineux on Saturday.

That ended their 15-game winless run, which stretched back to 28 December, but they are still two points behind 17th-placed West Ham with four games to go.

To make matters worse, summer signing Simons and Dominic Solanke went off injured against Wolves, with the former rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament and the latter sustaining a muscle problem.

If the north London team does drop into the Championship, Tottenham will be in a world of financial turmoil, and may struggle to bring in much-needed revenue from player sales, too.

Tottenham’s finances to get a battering

Reports suggest that Tottenham could see their revenue drop by more than £200million if they get relegated, with the safety blanket of Premier League income no longer in the offing.

Incidentally, Tottenham are understood to have the seventh-biggest wage bill behind Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Manchester United, Chelsea, and Aston Villa.

Therefore, if they go down, they will have the biggest Championship wage bill in history.

If relegation is confirmed, Tottenham’s players will try to flee the Spurs ship like sailors abandoning a sinking vessel.

With Simons and Wilson Odobert likely to be out for much of the year, and James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski barely playing this season, could Tottenham be stuck with these big-money players for a while?

There will be interest in the likes of Mohammed Kudus, but these players may be part of a Tottenham fire sale in the coming months.

Some teams may take a punt and see some players as worth it in the long run, but they are also on huge wages, something they may not be able to match.

According to Capology, Simons is on nearly £200,000 a week, Maddison is said to be on £170,000, while Kudus is reportedly on £150,000 a week.

Moreover, Tottenham’s accounts ending 30 June, 2025, revealed a loss of £94.7m.

Their total revenue was £565.3m, which was helped by match receipts, winning the Europa League, and increased commercial revenue. That will plummet in the Championship.

According to The Athletic, most of Tottenham’s first team squad are on deals that include mandatory salary reductions, with many seeing their earnings slashed by around 50 per cent.

But in the Championship, those salaries are still likely to be far too big for comfort and close to six figures per week for many of the squad. Ergo, dark times could lie ahead for Tottenham.

Tottenham given late hope

After an insipid defeat at Sunderland, followed by a spirited and yet agonising draw with Brighton, Tottenham finally got the monkey off their back with a win at Wolves.

This was far from being a convincing victory, but the three points were all that mattered. De Zerbi will now hope this can be the catalyst for a great escape.

While a fixture list of Aston Villa, Leeds United, Chelsea, and Everton is not the easiest on paper, Spurs may sense an opportunity.

Villa are in Europa League semi-final action on Thursday before hosting Tottenham on Sunday. Chelsea have an FA Cup final to look forward to, with a Tottenham game likely to fall close to that fixture.

No game is easy, but Spurs will hope this victory is the beginning of a few falling stones that start an avalanche in the mountains.

If not, ENIC are set for a world of pain, both on and off the pitch.

Tottenham Women continue wretched run against big four as Spurs close in on WSL record

Tottenham Women continue wretched run against big four as Spurs close in on WSL record - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham Hotspur were held to a goalless draw against Manchester United as their poor run against the Women’s Super League’s big four continued.

Martin Ho’s side ended a run of three defeats in a row in the WSL as they dominated the Red Devils at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday.

Despite having the greatest share of chances and possession, they couldn’t find a way past Phallon Tullis-Joyce in the Man United goal.

Although they were without top scorer Beth England, Tottenham had a whopping 22 shots, but just five of them were on target.

However, Tottenham’s draw with Man United puts them within one victory of achieving their record WSL points total, highlighting what a good job Ho has done in his first season in charge.

Tottenham miss golden opportunity

Heading into this encounter, Tottenham had won just twice against the WSL’s big four (Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City, and Man United) in 52 attempts.

On Sunday, though, it looked like they would claim win number three as they had 57.5 per cent possession and 12 more shots than the visitors.

But try as they might, they simply could not find a way through an out-of-sorts Red Devils team.

At the other end, however, Tottenham did keep their first clean sheet since 11 January.

And although they didn’t get the three points their performance merited, Ho could not fault his team’s effort.

He told SpursPlay: I thought we were very good. I couldn’t have asked any more as they’ve pushed a really good side today.

“In the first half and second, we had some big chances, and it just won’t go in, but we have to look a lot of the progressive play, a lot of really good attitude and mentality – a really good performance. We’ve pushed them all away, but it just didn’t want to go in.”

With two games to go, if Tottenham beat either London City or Brighton, fifth place will be theirs. Moreover, they will surpass their record WSL points total of 32.

Tottenham on the rise under Martin Ho

Tottenham Women took a bit of a risk in appointing 35-year-old Ho as their new boss last summer. While he had impressed at Norwegian side SK Brann, the WSL is a different proposition entirely.

So to turn a Tottenham team that finished 11th last season into one that was flirting with Champions League qualification earlier this year is some going by Ho.

Tottenham decided to extend his contract in late March, and with him at the helm, Spurs seem to be on the right path.

They will need to strengthen again this summer, but if they can beat London City and Brighton in the coming weeks, this season should be viewed as a huge success.

Tottenham: Roberto De Zerbi is wasting his time trying to improve Randal Kolo Muani

Tottenham: Roberto De Zerbi is wasting his time trying to improve Randal Kolo Muani - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Randal Kolo Muani is set to have familiar company almost every time he sits down at Tottenham Hotspur‘s training base over the coming weeks.

Roberto De Zerbi is refusing to give up on the on-loan striker, even if supporters have unanimously. There is no doubting the impact the new head coach has already made at the club, and he is determined to improve the fortunes of Kolo Muani too.

“I have to go every day for lunch with Kolo Muani this week, every day, breakfast, lunch and dinner, because he’s a top player, he has potential,” said De Zerbi after Spurs finally earned their first win of 2026 by beating Wolves last time out. “I want him to play better.”

Keen to breathe new life into Spurs’ survival fight, the Italian has also shown his players old highlights on YouTube during briefings. It was rather telling that he namedropped Kolo Muani again, using him as an example of an ace operating where he should flourish.

But after scoring one paltry goal in the Premier League this season, Kolo Muani has not impressed at Tottenham. With Dominic Solanke and Xavi Simons injured, though, the faltering frontman is likely to be handed more opportunities to save Spurs from relegation.

Roberto De Zerbi still backing Randal Kolo Muani

It often feels as though De Zerbi is Kolo Muani’s last remaining believer. Somehow, somewhere, he has seen enough to be confident that the 27-year-old can still come good. It must only be the faintest of sparks, but for this manager, that is all he needs to start.

Kolo Muani was handed his third consecutive start at Molineux last time out. The decision was a head-scratching one and made worse after he was hooked at half-time, having once again failed to show why he could be the answer to Spurs’ problems on the right wing.

“If I play with Kolo Muani as right winger, it’s because he has played in that position,” De Zerbi had said in the build-up. “If you go to YouTube, and you go to ‘Kolo Muani Eintracht Frankfurt’, you can see he played very well in that position.

“He scored a lot of goals in that position.”

It was a curious explanation on paper, but there was an obvious reason behind it. De Zerbi has sought from the very first minute to rebuild his squad’s shattered confidence, and this public backing could yet give Kolo Muani the boost he needs.

Clearly, he has never been a prolific goalscorer. After all, he scored a meagre total of eight goals in Ligue 1 after joining PSG for a whopping £76.4million back in 2023.

Born in the same Paris suburb where Kylian Mbappe was raised, he became lost in the lengthy shadow the superstar cast at the Parc des Princes. That resulted in him being shipped out on loan to both Juventus and Spurs in consecutive years.

He has arguably been one of Spurs’ biggest disappointments this campaign, such is the gulf between his potential and real-life output. There have been flashes – his brace against his parent club in the Champions League, for one – but not enough to win over supporters.

Kolo Muani has been accused of looking disinterested during matches, and he once again plodded around at a sluggish pace against already-relegated Wolves. He took just 34 touches, recorded only one shot, which was not on target, and didn’t create a single chance.

Damningly, he also completed 71 per cent of his passes while failing to find a team-mate with either of his two cross attempts. Just two of his touches came inside the Wolves box, demonstrating he was too easily marshalled, and he was dispossessed twice.

Having watched him win three of his seven ground duels, De Zerbi decided to take him off and replace him with Mathys Tel. Simply, Kolo Muani is not cutting it at Spurs, and it will come as no surprise if he is on the first flight back to Paris this summer.

Mathys Tel simply must play

The time has come for De Zerbi to weigh up starting Tel ahead of Kolo Muani for the remaining four league matches. The 21-year-old hasn’t exactly set the world alight since joining Spurs, but he has made more of a difference in comparison to most of his peers.

He has remained patient for long enough, and now must be rewarded. The injury to Solanke will likely give him more chances, having started just nine games to date this season. With three goals and one assist under his belt, his track record is more than reasonable.

Tel also promises to inject fresh energy into Spurs’ survival fight. His unpredictability has enabled him to catch the eye and could be crucial in helping to break down opponents. While his end product is questionable, the same can be levelled at Kolo Muani.

De Zerbi would therefore do well to thrust him back into the firing line.

Manor Solomon could return to Tottenham despite permanent transfer lined up - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Tottenham Hotspur could look to bring Manor Solomon back into the fold if they are relegated.

Solomon is currently out on loan at Fiorentina, where he has scored two goals and assisted once in 15 matches.

Roberto De Zerbi has not had the chance to work with him yet, and could have a dilemma on his future in the summer.

Spurs are currently 18th in the Premier League table, two points behind West Ham, with four matches left to play.

It is very possible that they could be relegated, which would potentially allow Solomon to revive his Tottenham career.

🚨 TOTTENHAM TRANSFER HUB 🚨

Breaking N17 recruitment news: Top targets, deals in progress, whispers, signings, departures, contract updates.

What is Tottenham’s dilemma when it comes to Solomon?

Solomon thrived away from Tottenham with Leeds in the Championship, and it was surprising that the Whites never made that move permanent.

John Wenham believes he may well come back into the side if the Lilywhites drop down to the second tier after he scored 10 and assisted 12 in the second tier last season.

That is despite his move to Fiorentina likely being made permanent if Spurs do survive.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “One interesting one could be if Tottenham and the worst happens, were relegated, does Manor Solomon come back into the team?

“On loan at Fiorentina at the moment, played against Crystal Palace in the Conference League, but does he come back into the team based on the fact that he was outstanding for Leeds in the Championship?

“Obviously, if they stay up, which I hope they do, then maybe he’ll secure that permanent move to Fiorentina. It was Fabio Paratici who brought him to Tottenham, and he’s now at Fiorentina, and they’ve brought him there.”

What could be next for Solomon?

Solomon has never really proven himself in a Spurs shirt at the top-level.

He has only featured six times for the N17 club in all competitions, with two assists and no goals in that time.

However, he is a different player in the division below the elite level, and could be a valuable asset, if that is the scenario that the North London club find themselves in.

His fate will likely depend on what level that Spurs are at next season; if they stay up, surely a permanent exit is on the cards for the Israeli winger.

Dominic Solanke sends three-word message after another new Tottenham injury update - tottenhamhotspurnews.com
Description

Dominic Solanke has sent a message of support to Tottenham Hotspur teammate Xavi Simons as injury issues continue to mount.

Both Solanke and Simons were forced off with injuries in Tottenham’s crucial 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday as they ended their 15-game winless run.

On Sunday, it emerged that Dutch international Simons had ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament, a blow which ends his World Cup chances.

Simons may even have played his last game for Spurs, with the 23-year-old unlikely to stick around if Tottenham get relegated to the Championship.

As Tottenham wait for an update on Solanke’s injury, the striker has pledged his support to the heartbroken Simons.

One blow after another for Tottenham

Just when it looked like Tottenham were turning a corner with their win over Wolves, more bad luck has waylaid them.

Off the back of Simons and Solanke’s injuries, Tottenham now have a whopping nine players out injured as they try to stay in the Premier League.

In an emotional message on Instagram, Simons admitted this was a devastating blow, but he would continue to be as good a teammate as possible for 18th-placed Tottenham.

“They say life can be cruel, and today it feels that way,” he said. “My season has come to an abrupt end, and I’m just trying to process it. Honestly, I’m heartbroken. None of it makes sense.”

It seems Solanke is taking a leaf out of that book as he wished Simons the best with his recovery.

“With you, bro,” he wrote, which could be taken in several different ways.

After the Wolves match, De Zerbi confirmed Solanke has suffered a muscle injury, an issue that forced him off before half-time against Rob Edwards’ team.

The Italian was unsure how many games Solanke would miss, with just four fixtures of the league season to go.

The striker may yet return to play for Spurs, who are two points behind 17th-placed West Ham, this term.

Roberto De Zerbi faces mountain to climb

De Zerbi has been dealt a very difficult hand at Tottenham. If Spurs go down, most of the blame should not fall the way of the 46-year-old, who was parachuted in with seven games to go.

Indeed, De Zerbi did something that Tottenham hadn’t done since 28 December, namely, win a Premier League game.

If they are to get out of this mess, having their best players available would certainly help, but De Zerbi does not have that luxury.

Simons’ injury blow is another setback, but Tottenham have to move on from this and try to beat Aston Villa on Sunday, especially if they want to stay up.
