“Tottenham spent £40million to get Romero. There’s no basis that we can sell him for only a £10m or £15m profit on what we paid.

“You don’t want to be selling your best players when you’re returning to UEFA Champions League football, but you know, as a minimum, it would have to be £80m, and we haven’t seen anywhere near that level from Atletico Madrid. So for me, it was just a pipe dream all along.”

The Lilywhites currently have two main centre-forward options in Dominic Solanke and Richarlison. While Solanke had a decent debut season for Spurs, Richarlison experienced another disappointing campaign.

The Brazilian netted just five times in 24 appearances for Tottenham, and despite an excellent work rate, his numbers are unacceptable moving forward.
