Spurs Women boosted by their World Sevens campaign
Spurs, who finished fifth in this season’s Barclays Women’s Super League, failed to get out of the group stages of the third edition of this fun-thrill, fast-paced Women’s seven-a-side football tournament.
After losing to Aston Villa 6-3 in this Group 2 opener, Spurs reignited their hopes of reaching the semi-finals after trouncing West Ham United 4-1 with goals from West Ham Academy product Araya Dennis, Ella Morris, Signe Gaupset and Eveliina Summanen.
Unfortunately Spurs’ ambitious hopes of reaching the last four were dented by a ruthless Manchester United 8-2 victory with Jess Park registering a hat-trick while Cathinka Tandberg and Olivia Holdt got the consolations for The Lilywhites.
In the final Aggie Beever-Jones’ hat trick led Chelsea to a 6-5 triumph over Manchester United.
“I think this competition is about more about results,” Shamieh admits.
“It’s about togetherness and entertainment for the fans as well and probably after a long hard season which was competitive,
"it’s a nice chance for them to have bit of a fun back to football which is sometimes missing in the competitive nature of the game during the season.
“I was lucky enough to be involved with this last year for Manchester United (who lost to Bayern Munich) in Portugal and you can see it brings staff and players together. We’ve had a lot of young players in this group more than any other team in this competition and it’s a good chance for them to go and taste the environment.
“Also for the older players to step up and take a role of mentoring the younger ones and that’s probably been the most satisfying things to see how they embrace the nature of that.
"They looked after the younger ones and togetherness this group has really grown going into next season.”
