Harry Kane's tearing up the Bundesliga at Bayern Munich. What's next for England's No. 9? - ESPN United Kingdom
Description

The 2020 documentary "All or Nothing: Tottenham Hotspur" provided a revealing glimpse into Harry Kane's psyche. In a one-on-one chat with then-manager Jose Mourinho, Kane said: "When you're at a club like Tottenham, we've done well and I've done well, but I want to be [Cristiano Ronaldo] or [Lionel Messi]."

Some might have scoffed at the English striker's ambition as shown on screen, but despite the constant change after Mauricio Pochettino's departure as Spurs manager in 2019, Kane's brilliant numbers never waned. His blistering start to the 2025-26 campaign with Bayern Munich (18 goals in 10 matches), is on par with Messi and Ronaldo.

Take a deeper look at his overall game, however, and his gaudy scoring stats are just scratching the surface. He has never been more influential in the buildup phase of play. The goals remain a constant, but he now plays a role at the start, middle and end of Bayern's attacks. Kane is evolving, and that evolution is contributing to perhaps his best season yet.

With Saturday's Der Klassiker vs. Borussia Dortmund on the horizon (12:30 p.m. ET, ESPN+), let's examine how his role has changed from his days at Spurs, what it could mean for England at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and his future at the club level.

Filling a Musiala-shaped hole

When star midfielder Jamal Musiala picked up an injury during the Club World Cup, it left a creative void. Kane has taken up the mantle.

"When Jamal's playing, it's a bit different. Getting the ball off defenders, driving, when we were playing together, it was better for him to go and do that," Kane explained after Bayern's win over Eintracht Frankfurt. "This season, it's allowed me to play a little bit deeper, use my qualities in that sense of turning and playing it forward, then arriving later in the box."

The goal he scored in that game saw Kane occupy Frankfurt's defensive line before peeling back close to Joshua Kimmich just ahead of the center circle. When the ball was played up to Serge Gnabry near the edge of the penalty area, the striker moved forward from the middle of the pitch, slotting into a gap created by him initially dropping for a trademark finish from outside the box.

But Kane's game is about more than just arriving late to score goals. He's now a crucial cog in Bayern's buildup, often seen deep in his own half to receive the ball from his own defense.

In the ninth minute of the same game, Kane received the ball near the sideline in the left-back position, wriggled past two challenges and found Gnabry in space.

The surprising thing is how much of a regularity such Luka Modric-esque moves are becoming. Players get sucked into following Kane so far into Bayern's half that he can find another attacker in space as he holds the ball up.

He initiates the moves, and he completes them. Both his inevitable goal scoring and his playmaking ability are thriving as a result.

How Kane's game has evolved

Kane was always more than a goal poacher: it just took some time to discover his alternative capabilities.

At the beginning of his career and in his first two seasons in Germany, Kane's game centered around creating chances or scoring them, but mainly scoring. He amassed many shots and touches in the box under Pochettino, and shades of his ball-carrying and ability to bring others into the game appeared near the end of his Tottenham Hotspur spell.

Kane's heat map from his last two seasons at Tottenham, depicting where he was most active, helps show how his game has changed. More color appears in his own half, near the center circle, or in half-spaces (the channels between center backs and fullbacks) away from goal.

In his first two seasons at Bayern Munich, his actions took place almost entirely in the opponent's half, as he leaned more into his talents as a finisher.

Looking at Kane's heat map for the 2025-26 season, spots emerge all over the pitch, with highlighted areas deep in his own half.

Statistics show that this season, Kane is back to combining the best of his abilities as an attacker and a creator. His progressive passes are as high as they were in 2021-22 and 2023-24, while he's never had more touches in his own box than this season.

It's clearly working. "Arriving late," as Kane puts it, has seen his expected assists and shot-creating actions rise. He has provided a solution to Bayern's shortage of creativity in midfield, as Kimmich and Leon Goretzka aren't the most inventive midfielders. (All stats below are per 90 minutes.)

His link-up play, hold-up ability and chance-creating talents were underrated during his time in north London, but in Bavaria, that part of his game has been elevated. It is now being used in spaces where you'd typically see Kimmich, and it's the absolute best of both worlds.

Looking ahead to the World Cup

Kane, England and coach Thomas Tuchel will be determined to get their hands on an elusive trophy this summer, and they shouldn't be afraid to use the "new" Harry Kane to do so. Ominously for the rest of the competition, England might have started doing this already.

Against Serbia, while he spent most of the game occupying their back five, Kane would often peel off and look for the ball deeper.

In the early stages of the World Cup, Tuchel could opt for Kane in this role to break teams down. With Kane dragging a center back of out of position, faster players such as Anthony Gordon or Bukayo Saka can be played in behind. In the latter stages (should England reach them), England might have less of the ball and use him more like a target man, as they did in the first minute of the Serbia game when a long ball was sent into the box for Kane to nod down.

Kane's versatility could unlock defenses that sit deep and elevate other attackers. However, he still needs to be the striker who gets into the box, as there isn't another striker in the national side with his finishing ability. Lucky for England, he can do both. The conundrum for Tuchel will be balancing both roles.

What's next at club level?

With Kane's Bayern Munich contract set to expire in 2027, both club and player are thinking about what happens next. Bayern's sporting director has hinted at an extension, and the longer a new contract isn't signed, the more rumors and conjecture will swirl.

We've taken the liberty of looking ahead for Kane, and his next step could be to settle unfinished business in England. Kane has played down a return home, but the motive would be clear: to break Alan Shearer's goal-scoring record (260; Kane has 213) and attempt to win a Premier League title.

- Darke: Tuchel's tough love on Bellingham could help England and the player at World Cup

- Ogden: Premier League big issues: Will Amorim, Ange last? Is Salah fading?

Manchester City have Erling Haaland, and unless a team comes along to sign him out of his massive contract, he won't be displaced. But what if manager Pep Guardiola combined Haaland and Kane?

Guardiola likes to play with four attackers and one holding midfielder behind Haaland, but those four attackers float around the pitch. One of those players could be Kane, as defenses wouldn't know who to mark.

The downside could be that it exacerbates some of the out-of-possession issues City have had in their press this season. The forward line has left huge gaps as City have pressed aggressively. Kane isn't a bad presser, but if he's asked to drop deeper, we have no evidence to suggest whether his work without the ball would be sufficient in this new position, particularly in terms of tackling and closing players down.

Teams are smart about exploiting space. Guardiola couldn't have both players pressing as forwards. Still, most of City's game will be played with them dictating the tempo, so the focus will be on what Kane brings in possession. It's inventive, but with Guardiola, it's wild enough to work.

In terms of other Premier League clubs, Liverpool have signed three attackers and are trying to figure out how they fit. Arsenal are ruled out because of Kane's Spurs allegiance, which leaves a possible romantic return to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. After getting a taste of his first piece of silverware, though, Kane returning to his old club or moving to Chelsea or Manchester United would be a step down.

Elsewhere in Europe, with the lack of funds in Serie A, Kane's next challenge could be tackling LaLiga with Real Madrid or Barcelona. Neither the Catalan giants nor Real Madrid have a pure No. 9 with a physical and aerial presence, besides Robert Lewandowski at Barcelona, whose contract expires in summer 2026. Since Joselu left Real Madrid, Los Blancos have missed the player, as Thibaut Courtois highlighted last season. "We put in a lot of crosses, but this year we don't have Joselu, a natural striker up front," he said after being knocked out of the Champions League by Arsenal.

Coach Xabi Alonso has a vast array of talent in attack that he likes to rotate. Adding Kane would give the Spaniard an even bigger selection headache. The Bayern forward isn't accustomed to that, and Lewandowski's expiring contract and Kylian Mbappé's tremendous form make Barcelona a more attractive option. It's hard to envision Kane combining with Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Pedri and not being successful, as Barça create plenty but are often wasteful in front of goal. As the starting striker, Kane would be a perfect fit in Barcelona's swaggering attack.

A longer stay in Munich?

With his current form, ability and profile as one of the world's best players, Kane is a suitable fit for a club that challenges for a league title and the Champions League every season. It's why he says he's open to a new contract with Bayern Munich.

"In terms of staying longer [at Bayern], I could definitely see that," he said Oct. 6. "I spoke openly a couple of weeks ago that I have not had those conversations with Bayern yet, but if they were to arise I would be willing to talk and have an honest conversation."

Despite being a tantalizing prospect for many clubs, Kane has repeatedly spoken of how happy he is in Germany -- maybe to the point where he himself didn't expect to enjoy it this much.

TRENDING RUMORS

- Tottenham Hotspur are willing to pay Harry Kane's release clause, which sources told ESPN is worth €60 million, and meet the wages required to bring the striker back from Bayern Munich, according to TEAMtalk. The 32-year-old is reportedly keen to return to the Premier League in a bid to chase down Alan Shearer's league record of 260 goals, having scored 213 himself before moving to Germany. Manchester United also want to sign Kane and view him as a key player for their rebuild, but any chances of signing the England international hinge on improving their league position.

- Liverpool are set to make contact with Borussia Dortmund over center back Nico Schlotterbeck, reports Christian Falk. Dortmund have offered the 25-year-old a new contract worth around €8m gross per year, but the Reds would be able to go higher and need to cover for Giovanni Leoni's injury amid long-term doubts surrounding the future of Ibrahima Konaté, who has been linked with a free transfer to Real Madrid next summer. Crystal Palace's Marc Guéhi is also on Liverpool's radar, while Bayern Munich could also move for Schlotterbeck.

- Manchester City are planning a £75 million move to sign Nottingham Forest midfielder Elliot Anderson but are likely to face stiff competition from Chelsea, according to The Daily Star. The 22-year-old has emerged as one of the top options if Pep Guardiola opts to strengthen his midfield in the summer, with Nico González having struggled since joining from FC Porto and questions lingering over Rodri's long-term future.

- Chelsea, Arsenal and Barcelona are all watching Juventus forward Kenan Yildiz, reports Gazzetta dello Sport. Juventus are set to offer the 20-year-old a contract renewal that will run until 2030, but they haven't yet agreed on the finances. And Chelsea haven't given up after seeing a €67 million offer to sign Yildiz rejected in the summer, while Arsenal and Barcelona are preparing to compete with them.

- Real Madrid and Barcelona both want to sign center back Dayot Upamecano as a free agent when his contract at Bayern Munich expires in the summer, reports Footmercato. Los Blancos are looking to replace ageing duo Antonio Rüdiger and David Alaba, while the Barcelona could let Ronald Araújo depart and need cover. Manchester United are among the English clubs also interested in Upamecano, but the prospect of him staying at Bayern hasn't been completely ruled out either.

EXPERT TAKE

ESPN's Sam Tighe explores the future for Bayern striker Harry Kane.

When Kane finally sealed his blockbuster move to Bayern Munich in 2023, it only ever felt like "goodbye for now" to the Premier League.

Many assumed he'd be back at some point to chase down Alan Shearer's record goal tally of 260 -- and despite claiming to have never felt more settled in Bavaria, scoring 23 goals in all competitions for club and country as he hits top form, the rumours of a return grow ever stronger.

Kane's brilliance is built on a natural goal-scoring instinct, pure ball-striking, game intelligence and a frankly incredible level of creativity for a No. 9. None of that will dim with age, so if harnessed correctly -- i.e. not in some manic high-pressing system where he's asked to sprint around -- the 32-year-old has plenty of years left at the top.

He's so good that teams like Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United should be happy to re-wire their entire tactical setup around him, ensuring he has pacy wingers to pick him out with long passes and room to drop deep and receive the ball wherever he wishes.

Typically speaking, you'd be mad to spend €60 million to sign a player who will turn 33 in 2026, but Kane is no typical case.

Tottenham confirm Paratici, Lange as co

Paratici returns to Spurs hierarchy after FIFA ban - ESPN United Kingdom
Description

Fabio Paratici has returned to Tottenham in a formal capacity after the club confirmed on Wednesday that he has been appointed as their new co-sporting-director alongside Johan Lange.

Paratici resigned from his role as Spurs' managing director of football in April 2023 after losing an appeal against a 2½-year ban from the game.

He was one of several executives punished for activities relating to transfer dealings while working at Juventus, specifically allegations that the club made capital gains by inflating values of outgoing players.

Some individuals had appeals upheld but Paratici lost his case and he later accepted an 18-month suspended prison sentence.

However, since stepping down at Tottenham, Paratici has subsequently worked for the club in a consultancy capacity with sources telling ESPN his role would be reviewed upon the closure of the transfer window and the conclusion of the Italian's legal issues.

Spurs revealed on Wednesday that Paratici has now returned to the club and will partner Lange, who is promoted from his position as technical director to become co-sporting director.

In a statement accompanying the announcement, Spurs stated that Paratici and Lange will "lead our men's football strategy and drive an ambitious new chapter for the club," adding that "this partnership reflects a progressive approach to modern football operations -- uniting two proven leaders with complementary experience, and a commitment to collaboration and innovation."

After sacking head coach Ange Postecoglou and replacing him with Thomas Frank following Spurs' Europa League win in May, the club have radically overhauled their leadership structure this summer, with chairman of 24 years, Daniel Levy, stepping down from his role last month.

Vinai Venkatesham became the club's new chief executive with Peter Charrington named non-executive chairman.

The Lewis Family Trust is the majority shareholder of ENIC, which holds an 86.58% stake in Tottenham.

Joe Lewis's daughter Vivienne, his son Charles and grandson-in-law Nick Beucher -- co-CEO of Tavistock Group, the Lewis family office and private investment company -- have all taken on more prominent roles as sources told ESPN that the club rejected at least three parties interested in a potential takeover.

Paratici, who first joined Spurs in 2021, said: "I'm delighted to be returning to a club that I love. I have been working with Johan, Vinai and Thomas as a consultant for a number of months and I now look forward to returning to London and joining the team full-time.

I'm convinced that working in partnership with Johan, we can build a special future for the club and our supporters."

Lange said: "I firmly believe we are building something special here at Tottenham Hotspur, and I am looking forward to working with Fabio as part of our new men's football structure.

"We have a talented group of staff and players here at the club and we can look forward with confidence and positivity."

Sources have told ESPN that Venkatesham did not know Paratici well before joining Spurs but has been impressed with his input as a consultant.

Venkatesham added: "This is an important evolution in how we operate. The remit of a Sporting Director today is vast, and by uniting two exceptional leaders in Johan and Fabio, we're setting the foundations for sustained success.

"They are both outstanding football minds, with complementary expertise and strong track records. This structure reflects our ambition and our determination to compete at the very highest level to deliver for our supporters."

Walsh saves wasteful Chelsea in WSL win over Spurs

Walsh saves wasteful Chelsea in WSL win over Spurs - ESPN United Kingdom
Description

Chelsea's recent form has been far from convincing. But they are still grinding out results: a narrow 1-0 win over Leicester, back-to-back 1-1 draws with Manchester United and Twente, and now another unremarkable 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

Though unbeaten in the Women's Super League (WSL) under manager Sonia Bompastor and dominant in London derbies (with 33 wins in their last 39 games), Chelsea's recent performances have lacked fluidity, cutting edge and cohesion in the final third.

Against Spurs, it took 23 shots to finally break the deadlock, courtesy of a moment of brilliance from midfielder Keira Walsh, who smashed a low shot into the net from 25 yards. But just four of their 27 total attempts were on target, suggesting a familiar problem of high volume and low efficiency.

Too often, Chelsea squandered clear-cut chances and with each miss, frustration grew, fueling a cycle that only intensified as the match wore on. They also continue to struggle from set pieces and won 16 corners against Spurs (13 in the first half) without generating a meaningful threat from one.

Statistically, Chelsea generally dominate territory. On Sunday, they had 66% possession and their 67 touches in Tottenham's box marked a season high, complemented by 152 successful passes into the final third. Yet the conversion rate simply doesn't reflect the control they strive for.

Their attacking frustrations have been compounded by consistent squad rotation, as the starting XI has changed for every game so far and they lack of a focal point in attack. Striker Sam Kerr has returned to the squad but is yet to start a game after 22 months out with a torn ACL, while Mayra Ramírez remains sidelined with injury until the new year. As a result, and despite Aggie Beever-Jones contributing four goals in six appearances, Chelsea often look blunt in central areas.

Yet they are doing what champions do and are still finding ways to win. Last season, 10 of their 19 victories came by single-goal margins en route to a record points total in the WSL. So does it matter if they're not clinical, as long as they keep winning? Sooner or later, an opponent will get it right, but for now they are hanging on.

As for Spurs, despite leaving the match without a point, they demonstrated clear tactical and structural improvements under new boss Martin Ho, particularly in their defensive organization.

With four wins in six, one less than they had all last season, the club are on an upward trajectory and, having finished their last campaign in 11th, are basing their success on a more resilient defense. Last campaign, Spurs had the second-worst defensive record last year (conceded 44), but now, six games in, they sit fourth in the table with a neutral goal difference, firmly in the top half.

Against Chelsea, Spurs were resolute at the back, registering 30 tackles and 44 clearances -- numbers that reflect their commitment to keeping a compact structure and making effective last-ditch interventions. Chelsea created four big chances in total, but Spurs' discipline and shape limited their quality, preventing those opportunities from becoming goals.

Netherlands goalkeeper Lize Kop was particularly instrumental, producing several high-quality saves that kept the scoreline respectable. Her performance, alongside an impressive collective defensive effort, reflects a team trending in the right direction.

However, Tottenham's improvements remain largely confined to their defensive half. They struggled to make an impact at the other end and, with just two shots on target and a single big chance created, their presence in the final third was minimal. Chelsea, despite being far from their best, were rarely tested, and Spurs' attacks lacked the sharpness needed to trouble goalkeeper Hannah Hampton.

While their passing accuracy has improved, much of it was lateral or backwards -- a sign of caution in their build-up play. This limited their ability to generate momentum or apply sustained pressure. There were glimpses of intent in pressing sequences, but without much progression or direct attacking play, most moves fizzled out before becoming dangerous.

Ultimately, the gap between the two sides lies less in structure and more in execution. Chelsea, even when underwhelming, have mastered the art of grinding out results and capitalizing on big moments. Spurs, by contrast, are still learning how to convert organization into end product.

Restricting Chelsea to minimal chances is a significant feat for a team still adjusting to Ho and his tactics, but had their attacking play matched their defensive effort, they could have taken a point or more. Adding the mentality, ruthlessness and end-product that define title contenders is the next step in Spurs' evolution.

Orlando City eyed Tottenham's Richarlison in summer

Sources: Orlando eyed summer Richarlison deal - ESPN United Kingdom
Description

Orlando City wanted to bring Tottenham Hotspur forwardRicharlison to Major League Soccer in the summer, sources told ESPN Brasil, although a move failed to materialise over a potential €40 million ($46.4m) transfer fee.

The MLS club wanted to sign the Brazil international to a long-term contract and make him the team's leading figure in the run-up to the 2026 World Cup.

Richarlison, 28, insisted in the last transfer window that he was keen to continue at Spurs for at least another season. He confirmed that he had turned down an offer from a Saudi Pro League club in August as he felt a move away from London could impact his chances of playing for Brazil at the World Cup.

U.S. tech group opt against £4.5B Tottenham bid - ESPN United Kingdom
Description

A consortium led by American tech entrepreneur Brooklyn Earick will no longer make a bid for Tottenham Hotspur.

An expression of interest by Earick's consortium, which was reportedly ready to launch a £4.5 billion takeover bid, was "unequivocally rejected" by ENIC, which is run by the Lewis family Trust, on Sept. 26.

On Monday, it was confirmed via the London Stock Exchange that Earick had pulled out of the running, which was welcomed by the Lewis family Trust, who again reiterated a long-term commitment to Spurs. This news follows Asia-based consortium Firehawk Holdings Limited also ruling out a bid.

"The Board of Tottenham Hotspur Limited [the "club"] notes the recent announcements from the Firehawk and Mr Earick's consortiums that they do not intend to make an offer for the club," a statement on London Stock Exchange read.

"The Board thanks them for the constructive approach taken in the discussions with the club's and the Lewis family's representatives and respecting the clear position of the Lewis family that the club is not for sale.

"Following the announcements made by the consortiums, the club is no longer in an offer period under the City Code on Takeovers and Mergers."

It was announced at the start of September that Spurs' majority owners ENIC had "unequivocally rejected" two expressions of interest in acquiring the north London club, with one from a consortium of investors led by Dr Roger Kennedy and Wing-Fai Ng through Firehawk.

Amanda Staveley's PCP International Finance immediately confirmed via the London Stock Exchange on Sept. 8 that it did not intend to make an offer for Tottenham and Firehawk confirmed its intentions on Oct. 3.

This left a consortium led by Earick as the only public interested party in Tottenham, but he has withdrawn his interest in the Premier League club.

ENIC, run by the Lewis family Trust, owns almost 87 percent of Tottenham, but due to the remaining shares being publicly traded, the club is subject to the UK Takeover Code. This means any expression of interest or bid must be lodged with the Takeover Code panel and made public.

Since Daniel Levy was invited to step down after 24 years as chairman on Sept. 4 by majority owners ENIC there have been three expressions of interest to buy Tottenham, but the Lewis family Trust insists the club is not for sale.

A source close to the Lewis family told the PA news agency on Sept. 26: "This unsolicited and unnecessary interest does nothing to change the family's resolve and commitment to do whatever it takes to drive success on the pitch. The club is not for sale."
