The Daly Brief | Brentford vs Spurs, Premier League - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

"Less than four weeks on from their previous meeting, Spurs face Brentford again. What was learnt from that 2-0 win, how have the Bees got on since and why is their attack so threatening right now?"

Rob Daly, official club commentator, presenter and pundit

Brentford's new-look front line...

Brentford have won back-to-back games – including the 4-1 dismantling of Bournemouth, that featured some breathtaking attacking play between two forwards who’ve stepped up this season, following Yoane Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo’s departures. Striker Igor Thiago kept breaking in behind or brushing off Bournemouth defenders with his back to goal, to run deep into enemy territory before shooting or picking out a team-mate. His link-up with Kevin Schade was extremely impressive, with Thiago playing the rapid winger in behind time and time again, as he ended the game with a hat-trick. Thomas Frank will want his team to stifle any attempts to counter, as they did successfully at the weekend. “One of Crystal Palace's major strengths is transitions, and we really closed them down, something we worked very, very hard on, big discipline in the team and we need to do that."

Lining up in attack...

However, it’s not certain that Brentford’s main striker starts the game. “Thiago had a bit of an issue, but nothing to do with his injury (that kept him out) last season at all," said Keith Andrews in his pre-match press conference. “This time of the year, you pick up bits and bobs, games are coming quite frequently and we are still a couple of days out, but we will see how everybody is (on Wednesday) before we make any concrete decisions." Since Dango Ouattara headed to AFCON, Keane Lewis-Potter has started in the front three and he struck twice in the December 20th victory at Wolves (2-0). All of their forwards are sharp on turnovers too; aware a midfielder may play the ball in behind the opposition as soon as they’ve won it back. Cristian Romero, should he come back in after suspension, will have to be amongst a Spurs backline on its toes.

Managing man-to-man marking...

Brentford’s man-to-man marking was aggressive in their 2-0 loss to Spurs in early December, as markers followed players all over the pitch, something that was expertly exploited by Xavi Simons. Twice the Spurs number seven dragged centre-back Sepp van den Berg out of position by dropping deep, before spinning away from him to cause chaos – supplying Richarlison for a goal and scoring one himself. However, his suspension leaves a gap to fill – while Lucas Bergvall, who played as the most advanced Spurs’ midfielder at Palace, went off in that game. Thomas Frank said he should be okay – Archie Gray, the Selhurst Park matchwinner, also impressed during his stint in the second half in a more advanced role.

Regardless of the recent meeting, Spurs’ head coach believes this game will play differently – as he also returns to the Gtech for the first time since leaving. “I don't think I have thought that much about a game where it's coming back to me and I'm actually happy that I have those emotions, because that means it meant something to me,” he explained, before adding that he has 'one aim, that I want to win the football match ahead of me, together with the team'. So what decisions are to be made, in pursuit of a win? As mentioned above, Romero looks to come back from his ban – while Wilson Odobert’s impressive cameo at Palace could earn him a start, having struck the post too, after good link-up with the impressive Richarlison. Joao Palhinha will be in contention too, having come on to disrupt Palace’s midfield on Sunday effectively as Spurs looked to preserve the lead.

Last time at the Gtech...

Matilda Nildén deal agreed - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

We are delighted to announce that we have reached agreement for Matilda Nildén to join us from BK Häcken in January, 2026, subject to international clearance and work permit.

The 21-year-old Sweden youth international has agreed a long-term contract and will wear the number 14 shirt.

Matilda Nildén said: "I'm so excited and really happy to be here. I think this is the right step for me because the club wants to develop players and I feel they have a clear plan for me.

“I'm young and this feels like the next step in my career. I've spoken to Martin [Ho] and Andy [Rogers] - and I really liked our conversations. They like the way I play and that gave me a good feeling. I've watched the English league for many years, and it has always been a dream to play here. To now be at Spurs is really special."

Our Head Coach Martin Ho said: “Matilda is an exciting attacking player with the ability to operate as a winger on both sides. She plays with pace, bravery and intent, and has the qualities to consistently impact games in the final third.

“She is comfortable receiving in wide areas, attacking 1v1 situations and making decisive movements in behind. Matilda has significant potential, and we believe this environment will allow her attacking instincts, decision-making and end product to develop to an even higher level.

“We are delighted that Matilda chose Tottenham Hotspur as the place to continue her development. That decision reflects her ambition and belief in what we are building, and we are excited to support her growth while she adds energy, creativity and unpredictability to our attacking play.”

Starting her career at IF Brommapojkarna, Matilda joined Swedish top-flight side AIK Fotboll in August, 2021, a club that has strong family connections with her grandfather Jim Nildén, father David Nildén and sister – a current Spurs player – Amanda Nildén having all played for the Stockholm-based side.

In her maiden campaign, the young Swede made 10 Damallsvenskan appearances and scored in the Svenska Cupen before joining Elitettan side Bollstanas SK on a short loan. Back at AIK the following season, she featured 28 times, netting three goals on this occasion, but her most prolific goal-scoring would come in 2023.

Registering an impressive 23 goals in 25 games in the Elitettan (the Swedish second division) that term, Matilda inspired AIK to the league title and promotion back to the top tier. That goal return caught the eye of one of the top clubs in Sweden and earned the exciting winger a move to BK Häcken in January, 2024.

Across her two seasons at Häcken, Matilda made a total of 63 senior appearances in all competitions, including eight in the UEFA Champions League, and tasted silverware at the end of this campaign by lifting the Damallsvenskan for the first time in her career.

On the international stage, Matilda has represented Sweden from Under-16 to Under-23 level, recently lining up alongside Matilda Vinberg in the latest international break.

Brentford vs Spurs: Key stats for the Premier League fixture - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our opening game in 2026 sees Thomas Frank return to former club Brentford for the first time in the away dugout looking to continue our strong showing in London derbies on New Year's Day.

Kicking off the new calendar year at Gtech Community Stadium (8pm UK), we head to west London having only lost one London derby in the league (W5 D2) on 1 January and remain unbeaten since that 3-0 loss to West Ham United in 1983.

In the Premier League, we've won both previous fixtures on NYD which came in a 1-0 win over Fulham in 2011 and a 5-3 victory over Chelsea at White Hart Lane in 2015.

When it comes to New Year's Day games on the whole, both sides tend to start the new year well with Brentford losing one in seven (W4 D2) and us winning seven of our last nine.

Buoyed by the determined 1-0 win at Crystal Palace to close out 2025, we remain in the capital and face a Brentford side who we are yet to lose to in all four away league fixtures since their promotion in 2021/22 (W1 D3).

Winning 2-0 there last term on 2 February, 2025, our Head Coach matched that result to get the better of his previous side last time out at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as Xavi Simons inspired us to victory with an assist and a first Spurs goal in early December.

That victory made it four league wins on the spin against the Bees and we have only tasted defeat once in the top flight (W5 D3), a 3-1 loss in N17 in May, 2023.

Despite enjoying the upper hand over Brentford in recent seasons, new boss Keith Andrews has made an impressive start to life in management and his side have won eight of their 12 Premier League home games (D2 L2), including four of the last five.

In what looks set to be a game of fine margins, Richarlison will be eager to be the difference maker in a fixture he has relished in the past with the Brazilian having a hand in four goals across his five league starts against Brentford (three goals, one assist), scoring the opener when we met back in December.

Pape Matar Sarr helps Senegal to AFCON knockout stages - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Pape Matar Sarr made his first start at this season's Africa Cup of Nations to help Senegal book their place in the round of 16 with a 3-0 win over Benin on Tuesday evening.

While they headed into the game assured of qualification, they knew if they wanted to take top spot in Group D, they needed to at least equal the result of DR Congo, who faced bottom side Botswana - and they did just that.

As the Democratic Republic of Congo swept Botswana aside 3-0 in Rabat, Sarr's Senegal did the same to Benin in Tangier.

Having not appeared thus far at the tournament, Pape was in from the off against Benin, playing 81 minutes and earning his 37th international cap.

Abdoulaye Seck and Habib Diallo put Senegal two to the good with goals either side of half-time before they faced a nervy end as Kalidou Koulibaly was dismissed with 19 minutes remaining. However, deep, deep into added time at the end of the game, a penalty converted by Cherif Ndiaye made sure they were group winners.

The victory has earned them a last 16 clash with either Sudan or Burkina Faso, dependent on the final results in Group E, which will be concluded tonight.

Either way, Pape's Senegal will next be in action on Saturday 3 January - kick-off 4pm (UK).

Yves Bissouma's Mali will face Tunisia in the last 16, with that game scheduled for Saturday, but kicking-off at the later time of 8pm (UK).

Hanna Wijk | 10 facts about our newest defender

Hanna Wijk | 10 facts about our newest defender - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Hanna Wijk has become our third signing of the winter.

The Sweden international arrives in north London following a five-year spell at BK Häcken, where she made over a century of appearances, and has penned a long-term contract with us.

Having recently turned 22, the defender has enjoyed a successful few seasons in her homeland, winning the Damallsvenskan title twice and also the Swedish Cup in 2021.

But now she is set for her first adventure out of Sweden and will arrive in north London in January, 2026.

So why not get to know our latest signing with 10 things you might not know about her.

An impactful first memory

We all have that very first memory of kicking the football or watching from the stands – but Hanna has a unique first connection to the beautiful game.

After getting involved in football through her friends, she started training with a club in her hometown and in one of her first sessions, the young defender took a ball in her face which caused her nose to start to bleed.

She certainly got the full brunt of what football is all about!

But her determination to keep going has now seen her rack up over 100 senior appearances and represent her nation on the international stage.

Leading by example early on

Leadership has been at the forefront of Hanna’s career from the early stages.

She started her youth career at Floda BoIF before moving to Lerum IF, where she spent five seasons with the latter club and in that time, she wore the captain’s armband – showcasing her leadership abilities in her teenage years.

Even in her final season for Häcken, she was named one of the vice-captains for the squad that secured the Damallsvenskan (Sweden’s top flight) title.

Away from the pitch

While football will be at the forefront of her career, Hanna enjoys playing board games, helping take her mind away from the pitch and relax with team-mates.

Speaking to us on her first day at Hotspur Way, the 22-year-old revealed that she enjoyed challenging herself at board games like Uno and Skip Bo – a card game that’s already very popular among our squad, with some players competing against each other on away trips.

Alongside this, she also revealed that she does some cooking and goes out with friends to relax.

Favourite food

Hanna revealed that her favourite food is a good bowl of pasta, as well as enjoying a bit of Asian cuisine.

An eye for goal

While she might be a defender at trade in her senior career, it was very much a different story in her youth career.

Hanna was originally a striker and in the fourth division in Sweden, she actually scored around 40 goals. However, during her time with the national team at the age of 15 and 16, they thought she would make a good right-back and the rest is history.

Silverware

Hanna has enjoyed plenty of success during her time with Häcken.

She joined the Gothenburg side in 2020 and originally played in their Under-19s side, before going on to make her first team debut in the July of that year and, in her first season, she was part of the squad that lifted the Damallsvenskan title.

The trophy success continued in the following season, this time winning the Swedish Cup – where she started and completed the full match in their 3-0 win over Eskilstuna United.

Then, in the campaign just gone, she helped her side to their second league title in four years – winning the top flight by four points.

International call-up

Having been a regular member for Sweden throughout their youth age groups, in September, 2022, Hanna received her first call-up to senior squad for a preliminary training camp.

And guess who was also handed their first call-up at that exact time – our very own Matilda Vinberg! A special moment for the pair to share together on their first training camp with the senior squad.

Hanna was given her senior debut around two years later, starting in the 8-0 win over Luxembourg in October, 2024, as part of Sweden’s qualifiers for the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 in Switzerland.

Creator

During the 2024 campaign, Hanna registered an impressive 11 assists in 26 league games as she led the assists charts.

Four of those actually came in one single game for Häcken – an 8-1 win over Linkopings in October, 2024.

Familiar faces

Alongside knowing Matilda from their time in the senior squad for Sweden, Hanna has come across a fair few of our players – whether playing with them or against them in Sweden.

She starred next to Josefine Rybrink and Anna Csiki in their spells at Häcken, while she has faced Olivia Holdt (FC Rosengard), Olga Ahtinen (Linkopings) and Charlotte Grant (Vittsjo GIK).

Brentford vs Spurs | Every word of Thomas Frank’s pre-match press conference - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Thomas Frank spoke to the media after training at Hotspur Way on Tuesday afternoon to look ahead to his first return to his former club, Brentford, on Thursday (1 January, 8pm UK).

Here’s what he had to say...

Any team news?

Thomas: “No, everyone should be available.”

Could Cristian Romero be suspended for longer over his FA charge?

Thomas: “No, he’s ready for the game (on Thursday). As far as I know it’s something that will be decided in early January.”

Any update on Destiny Udogie’s return?

Thomas: “He is running out there on the pitch, doing individual sessions on the pitch so progressing going forwards, so that’s good.”

How are you reacting to the media reports about Brennan Johnson’s future?

Thomas: “Again, this is the third time I think I've got this question. There's rumours out there, in general I'll not comment on that, no matter if we want to sign or sell a player, or get a staff member in or out. I've no interest in commenting either way.”

Is Brennan available for Thursday?

Thomas: “He contributed to a very good and important win against Crystal Palace. He trained very well today. I expect him fully to be available and able to play against Brentford.”

Do you expect to be busy in the January transfer window?

Thomas: “We are, we will be in the market. We are definitely interested in, if we can, strengthening the squad. We will do that, I've said it a few times before that I think it's very important of course there are different types you can add to a squad, but the main bit is that we ones we add need to be the ones we really think can improve the team. And then, like normal, there can be outgoings if you want to try to make a sharp squad.”

How do you feel about returning to Brentford?

Thomas: “That one cannot be business as usual. That is special. I don't think I have thought that much about a game where it's coming back to me and I'm actually happy that I have those emotions, because that means it meant something to me, the nine years I spent at Brentford, almost seven as a Head Coach. Brentford Football Club, the fans and especially the people that I worked closely with have a special place in my heart. That's the longest time I have ever been in a club and we achieved incredible things together, so that is very, very special. First and foremost, I need to be extremely focused to go right instead of going left when I come out to the stadium, that's the first thing! And it will be special when I arrive, just before the match starts, but of course when the first whistle goes there's only one aim, and that is doing everything I can, together with the team, to perform well and get three points.”

Will it be a strange feeling going back for the first time?

Thomas: “Strange, I don’t know. I would say, not strange, special, special in every aspect. It’s special because there is one job to do, I’m Head Coach for this fantastic club, I’m working night and day to do everything I can to improve the team and the club, and that is one aim, that I want to win the football match ahead of me, together with the team. Then it’s special to come back first time in front of all the fantastic Brentford fans and the players and the staff I know very well.”

What did you learn from the home game against them?

Thomas: “I learned a few things. I know we won the game, but before that and also after here, you can see they're strong, they've done well. I think they're such a top example to follow for a lot of football people, what they have created. Actually, in many ways, it's super, super good that they performed well. I'm happy for that because when you leave something, you want to make sure that hopefully the impact you had is sustainable. The bit we built together, me and a lot of other people, because it's not only about me, built a very strong culture, very strong organisation, very strong structure, so they could hire from within an unexperienced head coach, but a good person, good football knowledgeable person in Keith (Andrews) and good leadership skills, carry on with a lot of other good people in the organisation, so basically, take me, four staff members, four key players, and they're still performing in the most competitive league in the world. That is very, very remarkable. That's unbelievable. It's a b it like that, that I, on the flip side, want to create here in Tottenham, something unbelievable, a strong culture, strong organisation, strong structure, so no matter what things happen, we are strong and stable. We can be strong and stable and consistent, you have a real chance to create something magical. That's the aim, what I want to do again here in Tottenham, and that's what they have done very well.”

Brentford are known to use a lot of data – is that something you want to replicate at Spurs?

Thomas: “I think these days every club has very good data. I think the scouting department that Rob and Johan Lange have built together here is very strong. I see a lot of similarities to what I saw in Brentford, so that's relatively even. Of course, they have a bigger base also with Matthew's company behind it. I think what people didn't understand fully about Brentford, the real secret sauce was the people, the culture that was built stronger and stronger, year after year.”

How is Brennan Johnson’s mindset at the moment?

Thomas: “As I said, Brennan is a very important player for us. Sometimes things change if another player comes in. Unfortunately for him, Kudus came in and played on the right side and has done well, so it's been a little bit more tricky to get enough starts. He started the season also quite well from the left. I think Brennan has a lot of attributes – very good running in behind, very good scoring goals, that's a good quality – so some of those key things is fantastic. Also working hard for the team, but you need more than just 11 players. That's the way it is. I think Brennan has been a top professional, is a top professional, trained well today. He's ready for two days' time.”

Have you identified a January transfer window ‘shopping list’?

Thomas: “I think there's a few things you need to understand. The January window is the most difficult window, so I understand it's a window and everyone is super excited speaking about it. It will not stop after the 31st of January. That's the way it is. As I said, I can't highlight enough, we are in the market, we are prepared, we are working, but I also think it's super important, as I said before, every decision I take, or I take together with the other guys in terms of decision-making, is for the future of the club. There's no reason to sign a player if you don't think it's for the future of the club, if it is just helping a little bit the next six months, we need to build something sustainable that can be very strong and powerful. That journey takes time, and that journey needs to take good, clever decisions along the way. That's maybe not 'wow', but good decisions that can make us more stable and more competitive and then we are from there. So we are there, but we'll see what's happening.”

Is Lucas Bergvall completely fine after Crystal Palace?

Thomas: “Lucas is okay. I am quite positive that he will be available. Of course, there's a small doubt, but it's quite possible that he will be available.”

How difficult is it for the club to keep selling and replacing goalscorers?

Thomas: “Goals are very important and they're very difficult to find. There's no two ways about that. That's very important, so it's important that how can we make sure we have enough goals in the team and players that can score goals. That's the key thing. That's, of course, also what we are looking after to try to improve. I think the positive bits from this season so far is to think Richy has done well and been fit and available for more than almost eight months since we started, but we need to have enough players with goals. Both developing them, but also finding players that can score goals for the future.”

Is it in your mind that Radu Dragusin might need to head out to get the minutes he needs?

Thomas: “Right now, I am just so happy to see him come onto the pitch. Being out for nine months or 10 months, something like that, so for him it is a massive step to step onto the pitch that he missed so much. For me that is the most important thing. I also spoke to you guys about a month or six weeks ago that he needed more training, more game minutes with the Under-21s and he progressively got better and more and more fit, so it’s all about that and regarding rumours, rumours are rumours.”

What’s the plan for Mason Melia when he comes in in the New Year?

Thomas: “We need him in the club first on the first of January. There are a lot of moving parts and then when we know all the moving parts, we’ll take the final decision on what we’re doing.”

What’s your assessment of the club’s Premier League record in 2025?

Thomas: “Probably not the greatest record, isn’t that fair to say? What can I say, I have been involved in half of them or something like that, so that’s the bit I can assess. I think for a club of Tottenham’s stature, we need to win more than 11 out of 37 games. I also said when I came in, this is part of a longer, longer journey and there is not a quick fix. We are doing everything we can to improve things and make sure things get better bit by bit. Alongside that, we are also playing Champions League, which we are very happy with and that is where we’re aiming to be every year if possible.”

What’s the plan to winning games more often in 2026?

Thomas: “I think slowly, bit by bit, adding those layers where we are competitive in the games for example where not everything is perfect. I think that was a big step against Crystal Palace. It was a beautiful, ugly win. To go away to a very difficult away ground and win 1-0, it is definitely a quality you need to have if you want to achieve something big because one thing for sure is you are not going to play 38 perfect games. You play at least, at least 10 s*** games and can you win three or four of them 1-0 on a rainy day? There is a lot of quality in that and then the next bit is we need to be better on the ball. For example that was not the best game on the ball against Crystal Palace. That is one area we are working very hard on and also being a more offensive threat. That we are also working on but for that game it is also fair to say we are still without Xavi, Maddison, Kulusevski and Solanke, some of our most creative players and others are stepping up and doing everything they can to help the team, but that is also part of it.”

Xavi's solo stunner wins Goal of the Month award - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Xavi Simons has claimed our Goal of the Month award for December after opening his Spurs account in style with a stunning solo effort against Brentford in the Premier League.

The creative midfielder had a hand in both goals having first squared for Richarlison's opener on 25 minutes and then slotting home his first goal for the Club two minutes shy of the break in our 2-0 win at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on 6 December.

After losing possession just inside our half, the Dutch international quickly won it back off Sepp van den Berg and drove into the box from midfield to leave the recovering Yehor Yarmoliuk in his wake before firing a precise finish into the bottom left corner.

It capped a superb all-round display from our number seven who inspired us to a key win over Thomas Frank's former side and then he backed it up with a first UEFA Champions League goal in our colours against Slavia Prague three days later.

Team news | Updates on Lucas Bergvall and Destiny Udogie updates ahead of Brentford - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Thomas Frank is cautiously optimistic that Lucas Bergvall will be okay to play his part in our 2026 opener away at Brentford on New Year's Day, while Destiny Udogie is making good progress.

Midfielder Lucas was forced off last time out as we ran out 1-0 winners at Crystal Palace on Sunday - the Swede being substituted with 63 minutes gone after receiving treatment on the pitch.

However, Thomas Frank is positive that the midfielder will be fine for the trip to the Gtech Community Stadium this Thursday as we look to make the perfect start to the new year.

"Lucas is OK," he confirmed in his press conference on Tuesday afternoon. "I am quite positive that he'll be available, of course there is a small doubt, but quite possible he'll be available."

In terms of Destiny, our Italian full-back is making good progress and is getting closer to a return to the pitch.

The defender was ruled out until at least January earlier this month after he picked up a hamstring injury in our Premier League trip to Newcastle United at the start of December, but he is now back out on the grass and working towards his return.

"He is running out there on the pitch, doing individual sessions, so progressing and going forward so that's good," Thomas updated on our number three.

Finally, Cristian Romero will be back in contention to return to the side after serving his one-match suspension on Sunday, missing our victory at Palace.

Xavi Simons remains unavailable as he completes his three-match suspension. Long-term absentees Dominic Solanke, Dejan Kulusevski and James Maddison remain sidelined.

Description

On Tuesday (30 December) morning, Martin Ho welcomed his latest recruit as Hanna Wijk joined the Club.

Making a permanent move from Swedish side BK Häcken, the Swede became our second signing of the winter as we continue to build in N17.

Born and raised in Sweden, Hanna’s footballing journey began locally in 2013 in Lerum, a town in the mid-west of the Scandinavian nation, near Gothenburg, as she developed her skills first with Floda BoIF before joining Lerum IS, where she captained the side.

A full-back by trade, adept on the left or right, she stayed in Lerum until 2020, the defender then earned a move to Kopparbergs/Goteborg – a side which a year later would rebrand to BK Häcken.

Also picking up experience playing for the Sweden national youth teams throughout her development, she linked up with Häcken's Under-19s side when she arrived in Sweden’s second City, Gothenburg, as a 16-year-old. However, it wasn’t long until she was given her chance within the first team.

Having scored on her non-competitive debut in the pre-season, finding the back of the net in a friendly with Norwegian side Valerenga, her debut in the Damallsvenskan came on 10 July, 2020, as she came on a substitute in a 4-0 win over Vaxjo on Matchday Three of the new season when she was still aged just 16.

The full-back went to make on 20 appearances in total for the senior side that season as BK Häcken went on to win their first Damallsvenskan title under their new name – helping her side to the title alongside Anna Csiki, who is currently on loan at West Ham. She also featured twice in the UEFA Champions League, with both appearances coming in the round of 16 tie with Manchester City.

She made a played a further 22 games the following season which included three in the Svenska Cup as Häcken also went on to collect their first title in that competition under their new identity.

With the majority of her first years in Gothenburg seeing her being used mostly as a substitute, by the age of 18, she became a regular in the starting XI for the team in yellow and black and started to appear in over 30 games a season, which included further appearances in the Champions League as Häcken reached the competition quarter-finals in 2024.

Producing 12 assists in the league the following campaign as she led the assists charts, last term, she enjoyed one her strongest seasons to date. Taking further leadership responsibilities, the then 21-year-old made 30 appearances across all competitions, which included 25 in the Damallsvenskan as Häcken secured their second top-flight title.
