The lowdown on West Ham | Kathryn Batte - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

West Ham are the visitors to Brisbane Road for our Barclays Women’s Super League season opener on Sunday (12pm UK).

With a London derby to kick off our seventh season in England’s top flight, we spoke to Kathryn Batte, Women's Football Reporter for The Telegraph, to give us the lowdown on the Hammers…

What have you made of West Ham's summer?

Kathryn: “There's been plenty of change at West Ham but I think they've brought in a few good additions to make up for the experience they've lost. Yu Endo looks like a good signing and I'm interested to see how young England midfielder Sarah Brasero gets on.”

How good is Shekeira Martinez?

Kathryn: “She really hit the ground running straight away after she returned from her loan spell in January. She perhaps had the surprise factor in the second half of last season but opposition teams will know more about her now. Stopping her, however, is another matter. She is a real goal threat.”

How have they strengthened in key areas?

Kathryn: “They've certainly added all over the pitch which is what they needed to do. One defender and goalkeeper, two midfielders and two forwards. With the departure of Dagny Brynjarsdottir, they definitely needed to strengthen at the top end of the pitch.”

Anyone else to look out for?

Kathryn: “Welsh international Ffion Morgan has joined from Bristol City. There was a bit of competition for her so West Ham did well to get that deal over the line. How quickly she adapts to the WSL will be interesting but the experience of playing at the Euros will no doubt have helped.”

How could Rehanne Skinner set-up?

Kathryn: “I would expect West Ham to set-up similarly to how they did last season - which was usually a 4-2-3-1. They've had some impressive pre-season results - notably their 3-0 victory over Liverpool and were only narrowly beaten by Arsenal.”

What do you expect on Sunday?

Kathryn: “I imagine Spurs will dominate the ball as West Ham do not mind letting their opponents enjoy a bit more possession. I'm expecting it to be a tight game which may be decided by one goal. Both teams will feel confident so it should be a great watch.”

Internationals | Big wins for Sarr, Vicario and Solomon whilst Sweden held - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Pape Matar Sarr made a goalscoring return for Senegal to help his nation to a crucial home victory against Sudan in World Cup qualifying on Friday evening.

Returning to the national team for the first time since March, the 22-year-old was rewarded with a start to earn his 32nd cap and doubled their lead on the night with a superbly-taken finish - showing an excellent first touch to bring down a high through-ball and turning his marker before slotting it home - for his third international goal and to build on his impressive start to the season in our colours.

Separated with the away side on goal difference heading into the Group B contest, the Lions of Teranga had earlier taken the lead through Kalidou Koulibaly on 14 minutes before Pape popped up with the goods to complete the victory in Dakar. The three points meant Senegal kept pace with league leaders DR Congo who they face next in a crunch match on Tuesday (9 September).

Over in Europe, Israel's Manor Solomon - on loan at our opening UEFA Champions League opponents Villarreal - earned his 45th cap from the start and had a fine night for his nation with a goal and assist in Moldova to help them to a 4-0 win in Group I. That was the winger's eighth international goal who was replaced on 65 minutes with his side three goals up - Dor Peretz, Tai Baribo and Oscar Gloukh completed the scoreline.

In the same group, Guglielmo Vicario was an unused substitute for Italy as they hit five goals in the second half to romp home against Estonia. Following a frustrating goalless opening 45 minutes, the Azzurri came out firing after the break to run out victorious in Bergamo thanks to Moise Kean, Mateo Retegui's double, Giacomo Raspadori and Alessandro Bastoni. Up next, Vic faces Manor in Hungary on Monday night - the Italians sit three points behind second-placed Israel but have a game in hand.

Elsewhere in European qualifying, Lucas Bergvall remained on the bench as Sweden conceded a stoppage-time equaliser in Slovenia to see the points shared in their opening Group B fixture. The away side twice took the lead through Anthony Elanga and Yasin Ayari, but the hosts recovered each time through Sandi Lovric and a late leveller from Zan Vipotnik in the 91st minute. The Swedes now make the trip to Kosovo on 8 September.

Martin Ho: “Cathinka Tandberg is another brilliant player for us” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Martin Ho described summer signing Cathinka Tandberg as a ‘strong goalscorer’ and a player who will only strengthen the frontline in his squad.

The young Norway international forward was our final signing of the summer transfer window, completing a permanent move to us on Thursday as she joined from Swedish side Hammarby IF.

A proven goalscorer during her time in Norway and Sweden, our Head Coach was pleased to see the arrival of the 21-year-old in north London and believes her potential ceiling is ‘very high’.

"Cathinka is another brilliant player for us,” he told the media in his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon. “She adds depth to the squad, but more importantly her energy, commitment, and her personality in the final third is a huge threat in terms of goalscoring.

Watch | Cathinka's first interview as a Spurs player

“She's physically strong, powerful and her work ethic is second to none. This is a signing just now for now, but for the future.

"As she said yesterday in the media, she wants to be seen as a legend like Harry Kane was here and I believe she can. We want to give her every opportunity to do so."

He was later asked what attracted him to the signing of ‘Tinka’, he added: “She’s a really young and talented player, very creative and dynamic in that attacking third of the pitch, and a very strong goalscorer alongside the players we have already.

“I want to have different profiles in that frontline that allow us to play slightly different in certain moments but also cause the opposition different problems.

“Cathinka ceiling of talent is really high alongside the other players in the squad and I want to make sure we help her fulfil that.

“We’re very happy to have her here and she will add value but, more importantly, competition in the forward line."

Presser points | Spurs vs West Ham (WSL) | Martin Ho - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Martin on coming back to the WSL and how he feeling ahead of the opening game…

“I’m excited. This was the right time to come back, take the next step in my career. I’ve gained valuable experience being away, learning management, managing staff and a Club. We’ve had a really good pre-season, I’ve had a really good opportunity to assess the squad, look at the processes, the staffing, how we do things and to do make sure we can be the most efficient. I’m really excited now.”

On what playing style to expect…

“Passion, desire, commitment. There’ll be a very high intensity off the ball, in terms of aggression, being on the front-foot, defending forward. Then with the ball, being expressive, players can express their personality. We want to be very direct, front-footed, energetic, creative. We need to use the Club’s DNA and identity from a football perspective, make sure we embrace that, and hopefully we’ll do that throughout the season.”

On his first game being at home…

“It's really nice for me to have the first game in front of the fans. Being able to witness what it’s like in terms of the stadium, getting to the game, being able to look at the fans that come out to support, and make sure they want to come back and watch. That comes from performance on the pitch, the playing group and the commitment they give. Away from that, we have to make sure we’re inspiring a new generation of fans. We need those fans to make sure we take the necessary steps to where we want to go.”

On the standouts during pre-season…

“They’ve all been brilliant, I couldn’t have asked any more. A change in playing style, identity, coach, process can be challenging for everyone, staff included, but the players have embraced everything we’ve done. They’ve applied themselves correctly, gone above and beyond, the intent, the application… everyone’s doing really well. There’s a lot of talent in this group, it’s for me to bring that out of them and maybe change this in environment has allowed that. I’ve got to make sure that’s maintained throughout the season and beyond.”

On Toko Koga…

“Toko is very young, exciting, going to be a superb player for us. She is capped at international level, which is important, shows the quality she possesses. It’s a new culture, environment, new language for her, so she’s done exceptionally well. I can see that she’s comfortable now, settled well, understands what we require and what this Club is about.”

On his captaincy for the new season…

"Bethany [England] is the captain. Vice-captains, underneath that, will be underpinned by numerous players; Molly [Bartrip], you have got Drew [Spence], Eveliina [Summanen] is there and Olga [Ahtinen] has been around that. But, more importantly for me, it’s something I don’t look at in that way and it’s something I learnt abroad, I don’t like to put a hierarchy in place that it separates each individual. I think everyone can lead in their own way. Bethany will be the captain and she has led the team really well. If she isn’t on the pitch, then another player will lead and Molly has done that in pre-season at times. I usually do it on the feeling I get in the game and the person I want to lead in that moment of the game."

On the work Rehanne Skinner has done at West Ham…

“Rehanne [Skinner] has done a wonderful job. She started to build the legacy for this Women’s team. I’ve been fortunate enough to come in off the back of her and Robert, and try and take this team forward. These games are going to be competitive, West Ham are a wonderful team but we have a good team. We need to make sure we’re the better team, have the better edge and take opportunities when they come. No doubt Rehanne’s going to have them well organised so we need to match that – go above and beyond that.”

Richarlison wins August Goal of the Month award

Richarlison wins August Goal of the Month award - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Richarlison leapt to the top of August's Goal of the Month vote to claim the first award of the season with his wonder goal in our Premier League opener against Burnley.

Having opened the scoring with a well-taken strike in the first half, our number nine produced a moment of magic to emphatically finish off a wonderful team move - every player touching the ball in the build-up - with an acrobatic scissor kick to make it 2-0 after the break.

The Brazilian forward, whose Spurs career has been blighted by injuries, has looked fresh and sharp leading the line this term and he followed up that double with an assist in our impressive 2-0 victory at Manchester City a week later.

That was arguably the pick of the striker's 22 goals in our colours to date - and that early Goal of the Season contender, let alone Goal of the Month, has certainly set a high bar by taking 85 per cent of your vote.

Travel update | Spurs vs West Ham, WSL - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Fans heading to Brisbane Road on Sunday for our Women’s Super League fixture against West Ham United (kick-off 12pm) are advised that there will be closures on the Central Line on matchday, as well as a significantly reduced service across other Tube lines, affecting travel to the stadium.

• The Central Line will not operate between Liverpool Street and Buckhurst Hill/Newbury Park, meaning Brisbane Road will not be accessible via Leyton station on Sunday.

• This closure coincides with a significantly reduced service across other Tube lines ahead of planned industrial action across the London Underground network – with lines subject to delays, disruptions and last-minute changes.

Fans who would normally travel to Brisbane Road via Leyton are therefore encouraged to make alternative travel arrangements and plan their journey in advance.

Please also allow extra time if you intend to use other Tube lines, so as to factor in the disruption to the London Underground service.

Other ways to travel to Brisbane Road include:

London Overground

Leyton Midland Road is situated approximately 15 minutes away from Brisbane Road by foot, and is served by the Suffragette Line. Please note that this station does not provide step-free access.

To walk to Brisbane Road from Leyton Midland Road, turn left towards Leyton and continue down the High Road past Leyton County Cricket Ground until you reach Osborne Road. Turn down Osborne Road and the East Stand will be in front of you.

Elizabeth Line

The Elizabeth Line is scheduled to operate as normal on Sunday. Supporters travelling on this line can head to Maryland station and take the 69 bus to Leyton, or to Stratford station and take the 97 bus which also travels through Leyton. Both stations provide step-free access.

DLR

The DLR is scheduled to operate as normal on Sunday. Stratford International connects to Brisbane Road via the 97 bus route – alternatively, it is approximately a 30-minute journey to the stadium by foot.

To walk to Brisbane Road from Stratford International, turn left as you exit the station on to Celebration Avenue, which becomes Temple Mills Lane as you walk under the A12. After the bus depot, turn right on to Ruckholt Road until you reach Oliver Road, then turn left on to Olver Road. After 250 meters, the West Stand will be in front of you.

Bus

Buses 58, 69, 97 and 158 run along Leyton High Road, with routes covering the Blackhorse Road, Canning Town, Chingford, East Ham, Stratford and Walthamstow areas and more. Please click here for further route information from TfL.

Cycling

Brisbane Road is fully accessible by bicycle and is part of an extensive cycle network thanks to Waltham Forest’s Mini Holland Scheme, focusing on quiet streets and traffic-free paths. To plan a cycle route, please click here.

Once you arrive at Brisbane Road, there is a range of cycle parking available around the stadium provided by Mini Holland who have installed a large number of bike racks outside the Score Centre, opposite the Justin Edinburgh Stand where the Leyton Orient Superstore and Ticket Office is located.

Walking

Fans based locally may wish to consider walking to the stadium. We encourage planning your walking route to Brisbane Road in advance.

No Public Parking

Fans are advised against driving to the stadium where possible as there is no public parking available. As Brisbane Road is located in a highly residential area, there is also extremely limited parking in the immediate surrounding area. Many surrounding roads are for permit holders only and there are limited parking options elsewhere.

Supporters who do drive to the match are encouraged to take care to avoid penalty fines when parking by reading signage and by not blocking local residents.

Team news | Bartrip to be assessed ahead of West Ham opener - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Martin Ho has reported that Molly Bartrip faces a late fitness test ahead of our Barclays Women’s Super League season opener against West Ham United on Sunday.

Molly has been ruled out since sustaining a knock in our pre-season friendly clash with Sevilla last month, missing the following fixtures against Arsenal and Southampton, and will be assessed ahead of this weekend's London derby at Brisbane Road (kick-off 12noon UK).

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, he said: "Molly has a bit of a knock, she’s been out of the last two games, so we’re assessing her. That's it really."

Long-term absentees in defenders Ella Morris and Luana Buhler remain unavailable with our Head Coach otherwise reporting a clean bill of health amongst the squad for the opening game of the campaign.

Martin added: "The long-term ones before I was here, Ella and Luana, are still the same.

"They’re the ones who are really missing [for the weekend], we’ve had a few little knocks throughout, but a lot of those players have trained today.

"Apart from the long-term absentees, and Molly, we seem to be in a really good place."
