‘His strength is giving the players what the game needs’ – Sandro on De Zerbi - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Legendary former player Sandro believes a destiny has been fulfilled after seeing his old boss Roberto De Zerbi appointed as our new Head Coach.

The 37-year-old ex-midfielder revealed he hoped the Italian would one day take charge in N17 after playing under his tutelage at then-Serie A side Benevento in 2018, serving as his captain during that period.

With us as a player between 2010 and 2014 and now a regular matchday hospitality host at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, the Brazil international also cut his teeth as a coach under Roberto during the latter’s time at the helm of Brighton & Hove Albion.

Speaking after the former Marseille chief signed a long-term contract with us, Sandro says he’s delighted to see one of his mentors take over at the club and believes the 46-year-old has the qualities needed to make a real impact on the squad.

He even revealed how a special invitation from Roberto once meant he was unable to celebrate a Spurs victory!

Here’s what he had to say about the appointment of our new Head Coach...

What are your feelings about Roberto De Zerbi’s arrival here at Spurs?

Sandro: “To be fair, I always thought Roberto would be a manager for us. When I met him and when I played for him in Italy, because I like Tottenham, straight away I thought this would be the manager to put Tottenham at the highest level. I’m so, so happy because this came true and he’s here now. It’s a huge moment for us, an important moment for us and he’s the right one to be there for me, no doubt. I wish him the best of luck, I will support the team as always and with him, it’s a pleasure to watch and see what he does. You guys will love him, he suits us with his style of play, he’s got passion, vision and intelligence. I am becoming a manager now because of him, because of what he did with me in Benevento. In that moment, I said I want to be a manager because I really trust in the work this guy does. He is so passionate and I’m so excited to see him at Spurs – it’s a great feeling!”

What did he do to make such a strong impression on you?

Sandro: “He gave us – the players – everything that we needed for the game. Each game is different and the way he approached each game was amazing. The players need to trust in him, and I will say that they will trust him because they will see the results of his work. In my first game with him, I felt that the game was easier because I knew everything that was coming, because we did it in training. It’s amazing – his strength is to give the players what the game needs. He gives that every day in the training sessions. With De Zerbi, five minutes in a training session matters because he wants every minute to be important. For him, he will use these five minutes with reason – everything matters.”

What can he do for our squad?

Sandro: “We have good players. With Benevento when I met him, we didn’t have top players, we some had ‘okay’ players and he turned them into good players. He can help with the level of our players and they will fall in love with him, no doubt. I know football, I was at Brighton when I did my coaching internship with him and the players liked him. The players that we have will love to work with him. For me, it was a pleasure to learn from him at Brighton. I was there five months, he opened up the door for me and I was glad to have that chance – I watched every training session, every game and, wow, it was amazing. I was his player before, his captain in Benevento and we spoke a lot about football, so to see him in the Premier League, I always liked the feeling and I wanted him to sign with Spurs, because I love Spurs. That moment is now. It’s a huge moment for us and I’m glad, because he’s the right one to suit our style. You will see in the games the passion that he has, everything he does you will understand because he really loves football.”

What’s your first-hand experience of his character?

Sandro: “He’s got energy, he’s got passion. I was his captain and we were talking every day about football. You don’t have to be afraid. He is very intense – I will say that – and the players will need to be prepared because he will demand focus in the training sessions, he will ask everybody to be ready but this is nice, this is what we love as players, to work with someone who pushes us upwards and teaches us, so I’m very excited to see him work at Spurs. At Benevento, he joined just before the winter. He called me to sign – I was one of his first ideas – and although he was very young and it was one of the first jobs that he got, I was 29 years old and he improved me, made me come to every single session with excitement. I told him this and said ‘you are one of the best managers’. He laughed at me, but it was true.”

What was it like to watch him work up close at Brighton?

Sandro: “It’s funny because his first game at home in the Premier League for Brighton was against Tottenham and I was there in the stadium. I sent him a message to say congratulations on coming to the Premier League and he invited me to be at the game. It was his second game – just like it will be this time, Spurs against Brighton. His first game was Liverpool away, a 3-3 draw. But the second game, against Tottenham at home, it was difficult for me because it’s my club. Spurs won 1-0, Harry Kane scored. I was sat in with the Brighton fans when Harry scored – it was a tricky situation because I love Tottenham but I couldn’t celebrate! Inside I was celebrating though!”

As Lucas Bergvall experienced the joy of qualifying for FIFA World Cup 2026, it was the other side of football's emotions for Tyrese Hall as Jamaica lost their play-off against DC Congo on Tuesday night.

The Academy midfielder, currently on loan at Notts County, came off the bench on 83 minutes as the FIFA Play-off Tournament decider went to extra time in Guadalajara, Mexico. In the end, it was decided by the only goal in the first half of extra time as Axel Tuanzebe bundled home from a corner to send DC Congo to their first FIFA World Cup since 1974.

Elsewhere, it was a busy night of friendly action for our players.

Jamie Donley scored for Northern Ireland in a 1-1 friendly draw against Wales. The playmaker, a product of our Academy currently on loan at Oxford United, initially struck the post with his header from Justin Devenny's cross, but was calm as you like to tuck away the rebound to open the scoring after 22 minutes in Cardiff. Sorba Thomas levelled for Wales a minute into the second half. Jamie played 64 minutes.

Dominic Solanke came off the bench after 58 minutes as England searched for an equaliser against Japan at Wembley. Despite some nice touches around the box and helping set up the Three Lions' best chance for Marcus Rashford, it wasn't to be as Kaoru Mitoma's 23rd-minute strike proved enough. Djed Spence was an unused substitute.

Xavi Simons started and played 78 minutes in Netherlands' 1-1 draw against Ecuador. The Oranje were down to 10 men with only 12 minutes on the clock after Denzil Dumfries red card. Micky van de Ven came on for the second half in Rotterdam.

Pedro Porro started and completed a full shift in Spain's goalless draw against Egypt, Radu Dragusin also started and played 62 minutes as Romania suffered a 2-0 home loss against Slovakia while Kevin Danso remained an unused substitute as Austria beat South Korea - with Heung-Min Son leading the line - 1-0 in Vienna.

Cuti Romero started and completed the full 90 as Argentina beat Zambia 5-0 overnight while Luka Vuskovic - who scored his first goal for Croatia against Colombia last week - played 82 minutes in Croatia's 3-1 loss against Brazil.

Maika Hamano selected in FIFPRO Asia/Oceania Team of the Tournament - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Maika Hamano has been named in the inaugural edition of the FIFPRO Asia/Oceania Team of the Tournament for the 2026 Women’s Asian Cup.

A first player-voted honour of its kind at a continental tournament in Asia, the XI was decided on by more than 100 players from participating nations at this year’s competition, with all players who made an appearance eligible for selection.

It’s an award that follows in the footsteps of FIFPRO World 11, one of the most prestigious awards that football players aspire to, and the only global award voted exclusively by players, for the players.

Maika starred for Japan as they lifted the Asian Cup trophy for the third time in the last four editions of the competition – previously winning it in 2014 and 2018 – and played a crucial role in the final victory over host nation Australia.

Reaching the showpiece final after a perfect record, where the young forward netted twice in the previous rounds, Maika produced a moment of magic which separated the two sides in Sydney, turning fantastically on the edge of the box before producing a dipping effort to find the back of the net.

A lively outlet on either flank for her nation, where she featured in five of their six fixtures in the tournament and scored three goals in total, the 21-year-old has also been selected as an honorary citizen of her hometown Takaishi City, becoming the youngest recipient of the award.

Description

Lucas Bergvall came off the bench to play a key role in Sweden's dramatic qualification for FIFA World Cup 2026 on Tuesday evening.

The midfielder entered the fray after 69 minutes of the European play-off final against Poland with the match balanced at 2-2 in Stockholm - Sweden led twice, but were hauled back twice.

With 88 minutes on the clock, Lucas's shot from 16 yards was parried out by Poland goalkeeper Kamil Grabara, Besfort Zeneli struck his follow up onto the inside of the post and the ball rebounded to Viktor Gyokeres, who fired home from close range.

It ended 3-2 - and that means Sweden - missing Lucas' team-mate Dejan Kulusevski as he battles back to fitness from a long-term injury - are through to the finals in USA/Canada and Mexico, where they will take their place in Group F with Japan, Netherlands and Tunisia.

Description

Archie Gray scored a key goal as England strengthened their position in UEFA Under-21 Championship qualifying with a 4-1 win against Moldova at Norwich City's Carrow Road on Tuesday night.

It was a fine strike as well - Archie striding onto the ball 16 yards and planting a fierce drive into the roof of the net. That put the Young Lions back in front on 61 minutes and further goals from Ethan Nwaneri and Romain Esse saw them home.

Archie was substituted on 78 minutes. Ashley Phillips also started and completed the full match. England top Group D by three points from Slovakia - group winners go to the finals in Albania/Serbia next summer.

Elsewhere in UEFA U21 qualifying, James Wilson came off the bench after 67 minutes of Scotland's 3-0 loss at Portugal in Group B, while goalkeeper Aaron Maguire an unused substitute as Republic of Ireland beat Kazakhstan 1-0 in Group D.

Oliver Boast completed a full shift as England Under-17s beat Estonia 2-0 in UEFA U17 Championship qualifying (League B, Group B1) - Oscar Sandiford was a late substitute in Croatia. However, England finished second in the group and therefore haven't reached the finals.

George Feeney also played a full shift as Northern Ireland beat Kazakhstan 1-0 in Group 5 of UEFA Under-19 qualifying in Romania. Malachi Hardy was an unused substitute as England Under-18s advanced to the next round of the new 2027 UEFA Under-19 Euro series by beating Croatia 2-0.
