Internationals | Pedro Porro's Spain hit six, Micky van de Ven features in Netherlands win - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Pedro Porro's Spain were fire on Sunday night as they hit six in a World Cup qualifier against Turkey.

Appearing in his sixth successive international as he enjoys a sustained run with his national team, Pedro was once again in from the start as his nation looked to continue their perfect start to their qualification campaign - and boy did they.

Earning his 12th cap for his nation, Pedro put in a composed performance in Konya as Spain scored three times in each half to make it six points from six at the start of qualification.

After Thursday night's 3-0 win in Bulgaria where Pedro played just over an hour, our full-back's nation sit top of their qualification group, three points clear of Georgia having scored nine goals without reply.

Earlier in the day, Micky van de Ven was a second-half substitute for the Netherlands as they returned to winning ways in Lithuania, running out 3-2 winners.

Picking up his 14th cap, Micky was introduced on 62 minutes with the scores level at 2-2. Within a minute of his introduction, his side had scored their winner. Xavi Simons was an unused substitute.

The win sees the Dutch maintain their place at the top of their World Cup qualification campaign, ahead of Poland on goal difference but with a game in hand.

Elsewhere, Jamie Donley was an unused substitute for Northern Ireland who, despite putting in a valiant performance in Cologne, fell 3-1 to Germany in their qualification group.

Jhanaie Pierre on target but Women's Under-19s defeated in FAWNL Cup - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Women’s Under-19s tasted defeat in the second game of their FA Women’s National League Cup group phase with a 3-1 loss at Oxford United on Sunday afternoon.

Emma Thompson, who converted Holly Turner’s low cross, gave the hosts the lead after just three minutes before Nicole Barratt cooly added a second just before the half-hour mark as the U’s controlled the proceedings in the first period at the MGroup Stadium.

We produced a much-improved second-half display against the senior side, who currently compete in the third tier of Women’s football, but ultimately their experience provided a difference on the day as Holly Turner wrapped up the victory for the home side just after the hour mark, calmly slotting into the back of the net.

Jhanaie Pierre netted a late consolation goal for our young side, as we were condemned to defeat in our second group game but progression to the FAWNL Plate remains on the cards if we can beat MK Dons in our final clash in Group M later this month.

Martin Ho’s verdict – “I couldn’t have asked for more”

Spurs 1-0 West Ham | Ho’s verdict – “I couldn’t have asked for more” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Martin Ho was delighted with his side’s performance at both ends of the pitch as we kicked off our Barclays Women’s Super League campaign with a 1-0 win over West Ham United on Sunday.

As we began our seventh season in England’s top flight with a London derby at Brisbane Road, it was always going to be a cagey affair and it took a late winner from Bethany England to secure the three points on the opening day.

Our captain fired home from the spot with four minutes remaining on the clock to record a winning start for our new Head Coach in his first game in charge and in front of our supporters, with over 1,500 in attendance on the afternoon.

While, at the other end, Tōko Koga - on her competitive debut for the Club – and Clare Hunt put in solid performances in central defence to help us preserve a clean sheet, with many boxes ticked for Martin in the opening game.

Speaking to SPURSPLAY after the game, he said: “I thought we started the game really well, with a lot of conviction and execution in what we wanted. Off the ball, we were really good for the first half-an-hour and maybe towards the back end of the first half, we dropped off a little bit and just needed to be a bit more front-footed and not concede space.

“In the second half, I thought we came out really well. We started positively, we were on the front foot, trying to be progressive. West Ham are hard to break down, so we had to be patient and wait for those small moments. I thought the game would be won on something like that.

“I thought we deserved it. We pushed the game more than they did, we were more aggressive. They looked to play on the counter, and I thought we dealt with that really well. I couldn’t have asked for more… I’m delighted.

Martin on the importance of fighting until the end

“In the first half, we had new opportunities where we broke into the attacking third, crossed or shot, but it went wide or over. We were controlling the game in large moments. You just need one of those chances to go in. Thankfully, Eveliina did really well in the box, drew the contact, and Bethany put the penalty away really late on. That shows composure and class. And, of course, a clean sheet at the other end is just as pleasing on the opening day.”

Martin on preserving the clean sheet on the opening day

“As a coach, you want to win games but, more importantly, you want to do it with a defensive performance like we had. From back to front, we were good. The blocks in front of goal, the determination, the commitment, the passion to step in and not allow easy shots was brilliant. We had to do that in parts of the first half, and I thought we did exceptionally well. A clean sheet is just as important as a win and a goal. We have to build on that now.”

Martin on his first game in front of the supporters

“Outstanding. The fans were cheering, encouraging us, pushing us, even trying to help us make decisions! It was really nice. You want more fans like that to come out more often. It’s about building the fan base, building a community that supports us, and giving young girls the chance to showcase themselves, while also watching role models on the pitch who inspire them to achieve their own dreams. I want to make sure this fan base continues to grow. We’ll keep bringing energy, commitment, and desire for these fans, so they keep coming back.”

England spot-kick seals late win over Hammers in WSL opener

England spot-kick seals late win over Hammers in WSL opener - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

A late penalty from Bethany England gave us victory over West Ham United in our opening game of the new Women’s Super League season on Sunday.

The captain fired home from the spot in the 86th minute after Eveliina Summanen was brought down by Hammers skipper Katrina Gorry, settling an at-times cagey London derby at Brisbane Road and giving new Head Coach Martin Ho a 1-0 triumph on his first game in charge.

In truth, there wasn’t much to choose between the sides over the course of the match, with the goalkeepers rarely tested. Shekeira Martinez and Seraina Piubel went close for the Hammers either side of the break but we kept persevering, with Kit Graham a lively influence down the left flank on her return to competitive football after more than a year out with a knee injury.

We finally found the breakthrough with four minutes left, England hitting the back of the net despite West Ham’s substitute goalkeeper Megan Walsh getting her hands to the ball away to her left. That proved to be the difference, as we enjoyed our first WSL win since January.

Martin gave debuts to summer signings Toko Koga from the start and Cathinka Tandberg off the bench, while youngster Araya Dennis was handed her WSL debut. The first half didn’t yield much in the way of chances – both sides off target with a couple of attempts from distance – until the latter stages when a cheap corner wasn’t cleared and Gorry’s drive fell to Martinez in the box, but her effort was brilliantly blocked by goalkeeper Lize Kop.

Jess Naz fired over for us moments later before another big opportunity for the Hammers at the start of the second half when Seraina Piubel latched onto a cross at the far post but shot over from the angle.

West Ham goalkeeper Kinga Szemik had to be replaced moments later after landing awkwardly when saving a speculative Drew Spence effort that seemed bound for the top corner, but we didn’t manage to meaningfully test her replacement until the penalty as Walsh got a touch on England’s excellent spot-kick but couldn’t keep it out. There were appeals for a second penalty moments later when West Ham’s Ffion Morgan appeared to handle in the box as she dealt with a corner, but the referee waved play on and we saw out an extended spell of stoppage time to ensure we began the season with three hard-earned points.

Confirmed line-ups | Spurs vs West Ham (WSL) - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

We can confirm the starting line-up and substitutes for today’s Barclays Women’s Super League opener against West Ham at Brisbane Road (kick-off 12pm UK).

Martin Ho has made four changes from our final pre-season clash at Southampton last weekend as we embark on a new chapter in our Head Coach’s maiden outing at the helm.

Amanda Nilden and Clare Hunt come into the defence, with the latter partnering alongside Toko Koga in what is the Japan international’s competitive and home league debut for the Club as we play in front of our supporters for the first time in 2025/26.

In midfield, Eveliina Summanen and Olivia Holdt replace Maite Oroz and Kit Graham, who makes her first appearance in a WSL matchday squad in over 12 months after recovering from an anterior cruciate ligament injury.

After a strong performance at Southampton last weekend, Araya Dennis is handed her WSL debut as she makes just her third appearance for the Club.

Summer signing Cathinka Tandberg, who joined us on Thursday from Hammarby IF, is named amongst the substitutes. Academy goalkeeper Sophie Jackson also makes her first appearance in a WSL matchday squad.

Starting XI: Kop, Nilden, Naz, England (c), Holdt, Rybrink, Hunt, Spence, Summanen, Dennis, Koga.

Substitutes: Heeps, Jackson, Grant, Oroz, Graham, Gunning-Williams, Tandberg, Ahtinen.

Internationals | Spence sees England win, big victory for Palhinha - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Djed Spence’s first matchday with the senior England national team yielded a 2-0 home victory over Andorra, while Joao Palhinha’s Portugal were comfortable winners in Armenia on another busy day of World Cup qualifiers on Saturday.

Full-back Djed, who recently penned a new deal with the club and has this month earned his first senior call-up for his country, remained an unused substitute for the Three Lions as goals either side of half-time – an own goal and a header from Declan Rice – handed them maximum points at Villa Park.

Joao, meanwhile, came off the bench in the 79th minute of Portugal’s 5-0 triumph against Armenia. His side were already five goals up by that point, with the midfielder replacing one of the goalscorers, Joao Cancelo.

Also in action was Kevin Danso, who came on for the last 20 minutes of Austria’s 1-0 home win over Cyprus.

A number of our players were on duty for England’s youth sides earlier on Saturday – Callum Olusesi featured as a 69th-minute substitute in a thrilling 3-3 draw for the Under-19s against Spain at the Pinatar Arena, while all four of our players in the Under-18s squad took to the field as the Young Lions were crowned champions of the Costa De La Luz tournament with a 4-1 win over Morocco at Estadio Antonio Barbadillo. Jun’ai Byfield and Tynan Thompson started, while Malachi Hardy and Luca Williams-Barnett came off the bench amid wholesale changes in the 65th minute.

After making his international debut in midweek, young full-back Oscar Sandiford earned his first start as England Under-17s defeated Israel 2-1 in Germany. Oliver Boast also started and captained the side, playing an hour before being withdrawn.

Elsewhere, forward Oliver Salter played 70 minutes for Wales Under-17s as they won 2-1 away to Estonia.

“We're in a good place” – Martin Ho

“We're in a good place” – Martin Ho - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Martin Ho spoke of his excitement ahead of our Barclays Women’s Super League season opener at home to West Ham United – and he highlighted ‘there’s plenty to come’ from his squad.

Appointed as our Head Coach in July, Martin has had a hugely positive pre-season with his new squad, maintaining an unbeaten run throughout August with wins over Arsenal and Southampton alongside a goalless draw with Sevilla.

Now the focus quickly shifts to the opening day of the WSL campaign as we welcome our London rivals to Brisbane Road on Sunday – embarking on his maiden campaign as a Head Coach in the WSL.

Having the opportunity to work with the squad throughout pre-season, Martin was full of praise for their effort and outlined there’s still a lot more to see from his players ahead of the London derby.

“I’m really happy,” he told SPURSPLAY, reflecting on the squad’s effort. “But after seeing them in games and training sessions, around the environment, there’s a lot more to come from the group.

“There’s a lot more potential in each individual I would say, and hopefully we can bring more of that out and people will start to see that, and just giving them motivation, confidence that kind of freedom in the environment to enable them to flourish. They’ve started to do that and I think we’re in a good place.

“It has been a really solid five weeks for us. Having the trip aboard, which was brilliant in Sevilla, and getting the chance to go away and connect as a group, for me to understand them and for them to understand each other.

“Then, more importantly, having the opportunity to work with them on the pitch in the last five weeks has been brilliant and we have put some clear foundations in place. They’ve worked hard, the application has been great, the morale good in the group, so I’m really excited going into the weekend.

Asked about his excitement for his first game in the role, he added: I’m really excited and I’m looking forward to my first game as a Head Coach of this club.

“But, more importantly, the first chance that the fans get to see us in a competitive action for where it counts and matters.

“We know we’re going to be in a tough game against West Ham, they’re really organised and discipline, but we’ll apply ourselves correctly and in-print our own gameplan.”
