Under-18s in narrow defeat to Palace - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

A hat-trick from Crystal Palace forward Ben Casey consigned our Under-18s to their first defeat of the season on Saturday.

In a tough, physically taxing battle at Hotspur Way, our young side competed diligently and took the lead early through Oliver Boast’s first goal in our colours, the striker hitting the post before steering the rebound home.

Palace turned it around with two in two minutes before the break from Casey – both slightly unorthodox finishes – but we stayed in the contest and levelled just after half-time when Boast’s low ball across from the left was turned into his own net by visiting defender Jacob Fasida.

Casey subsequently completed his treble with a fine finish while goalkeeper Dylan Thompson pulled off a couple of excellent saves, but in spite of the final 3-2 scoreline there were a number of positives to take, particularly the maturity shown by the four Under-16s players in action during the course of the game.

Despite a last-minute change to the starting line-up with regular centre-half Tyler Tingey forced to withdraw, we started well and after right winger Miracle Adewole caused problems for goalkeeper Marcus Hill, we took a seventh-minute lead when Boast got away down the left flank, cut inside, hit the far post with a good initial attempt and then swept home the rebound.

Palace came on strong, though, and equalised on 20 minutes when striker Casey chased a long ball that emanated from the right side and just beat advancing goalkeeper Thompson to it, prodding it past him and sending it rolling into the empty net in one movement, despite the best efforts of retreating defender Elijah Upson to keep it out.

Thompson denied Makai Bernard-Ferguson with his leg just afterwards but we conceded a scruffy second almost straight away, Casey losing his footing as he tried to latch onto a ball across the edge of the six-yard box from the left but still managing to turn it over the line. Boast forced good saves out of Hill a couple of times as the first half wore on but the Eagles remained a threat, with key blocks from Epson and Ronny Moncur denying them a third just before the break.

We levelled the game up four minutes after the restart when Boast played the ball across goal from the left looking for Adewole, with Fasida accidentally diverting it home. The latter almost made amends with a fine free-kick that was well saved by Thompson, but just beyond the hour mark the visitors did manage to regain the advantage as Casey surged through on goal and blasted home.

Under-16s midfielder Toju Wellspring almost conjured up something special after some dazzling footwork saw him get a shot away, but his effort crept agonisingly wide of the post and although we continued to play forward, that was arguably the closest we went to taking any points as Palace kept up their assault with Fasida and Casey going fractionally wide while Stuart Odura’s fierce rising shot was bound for the top corner until Thomspon kept it out with a fantastic diving save to his left. We’ve been kings of the late equaliser so far this season at Under-18 level but with Upson unable to turn a cross on target in stoppage time, our hopes of another leveller slipped away.

‘We were pleased with the effort and application’

While naturally frustrated with the final outcome, Interim Under-18s Coach Joe Staunton felt the team’s display was an improvement on the midweek showing against Reading in the Under-18 Premier League Cup: “It was a shame not to get the result at the end of the game, but we were pleased with the effort and the application from the players to keep digging in and working hard to get a couple of goals,” he said. “I was disappointed with how we defended the space from a few longer balls over the top which ultimately cost us two goals, but while we’re obviously frustrated with the result, the performance was slightly more pleasing than Wednesday’s fixture against Reading.

“Palace usually bring their style – they can be quite strong and athletic and play with good detail in behind at times, and I felt we could have dealt with it a little bit better in terms of how we defended the space. We conceded a couple of goals in that regard but it gives us an opportunity to see what we need to work on going forward. At the other end, it was really good for Ollie Boast to get himself on the scoresheet. He shows an appetite – a desperation – to score goals, we can see that in training and in games and he took his goal well.”

Dog of the Match | Spurs vs AFC Bournemouth - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Tottenham Hotspur is the Club for animal-lovers and we use our platform to raise awareness of animal welfare and the importance of preserving nature.

For the 2025/26 season we are continuing to feature a ‘Dog of the Match’ at every home game at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Members of Tottenham Hotspaw – our first-ever Official Supporters’ Club for dog lovers – have been posting pictures of their beloved pets on the group’s Facebook page for a chance for them to be featured on the stadium big screens ahead of kick-off and in the matchday programme.

This weekend’s ‘Dog of the Match’ is Wallace, a 12-year-old lemon and white beagle who lives with parents Philip and Cariosa, as well as siblings Ryan and Emma. When he isn’t sleeping, Wallace loves playing ball in his garden with Ryan and Emma. He is also an avid watcher of Spurs on TV, at least when the family aren’t cheering the team on from the stands!

Alongside our ‘Dog of the Match’, we also profile rescue dogs currently up for adoption with All Dogs Matter – the fantastic charity partner of Tottenham Hotspaw – giving fans the chance to provide a forever home so badly needed.

Today, we are featuring Paulie – an affectionate little Dachshund who loves his walks. Paulie came to the charity due to a change in his owners’ circumstances and is looking for a new home with owners that have had dogs before, and who are around for a large portion of the day.

Until Sunday 7 September, Tottenham Hotspur is running its first global charity dog-walking challenge, powered by global walking app Walk15 and supported by Frontier Pets, in aid of All Dogs Matter. Find out more about ‘Steps with Pets’ and how to join here.

Thomas Frank: “Xavi will be a great addition to the squad” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Thomas Frank described Xavi Simons as a player who has ‘proved his ability over the years’ and, at 22, ‘has plenty of room to develop and get better’.

We announced the signing of the exciting Netherlands international forward from RB Leipzig on Friday, subject to international clearance and work permit. Xavi has signed a long-term contract with the Club and will wear the number seven shirt.

“He’s a player who has proved his ability over the years to provide goals and assists from both the 10 position and the left wing, Xavi can play in both positions,” said Thomas.

“He’s a very good finisher inside and outside the box. His dribbling ability, and his acceleration in bursts, give him that opportunity to go past players in one-on-ones, also to drive past players in more open spaces.

“His eye for his team-mates is key, in terms of unlocking defences, and I’m convinced he will come in and help the team and be part of a team that is working very hard together.

“Xavi is young, 22, he has plenty of room to develop and get better, but even though he’s young, he’s played a lot of matches over the last four, five years, which means I’m fully convinced with his qualities he can step straight in and help us.

“Of course, like any player coming into the Premier League, and a new team, there will always be a bit of adaptation time. He has great experience from the Holland national team, playing in the Champions League last two seasons… great experience he can bring to the team.”

Xavi Simons exclusive: “I said to my family, ‘yeah, this is it!’” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

New signing Xavi Simons underlined how thrilled he is to sign for Spurs – and explained how Thomas Frank played a big role in his transfer.

The 22-year-old attacking midfielder joined us on Friday from German side RB Leipzig, embarking on a new chapter of an already impressive career that has seen him win silverware in France with Paris Saint-Germain and on the Dutch scene with PSV.

A product of Barcelona’s Academy, he has also shone on the senior international stage with the Netherlands in recent years after making his debut at none other than the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

“I’m really happy!” he smiled as he spoke as a Spurs player for the first time. “I’m really happy as well for my family, we’ve been dreaming about this for a long time. Always in my career they’ve been with me, so being with them in this moment is special.”

Going into detail about his move, Xavi continued: “First of all, the project suited me. The second most important thing for me is the coach. I spoke to him, he showed me a presentation that really impacted me and that was the final decision for me. It’s the right coach, the right people and I believe that we will achieve really good things.

“Obviously, we spoke about football – the way he sees the team, the way he sees me in the team. The second part was that I had a really, really, really good feeling with him. I think that connection that you have and that you need at the start with someone is important, and after the meeting I said to my family, ‘yeah, this is it!’”

Explaining what he hopes to bring to the team, Xavi continued: “I would say I’m a really disciplined guy, then of course the skills, the flair. I just want to work hard and to win, that’s my main goal, and to give everything for the fans as well. I’ve seen some clips of the players and the fans – it gave me goosebumps and I cannot wait to start. I’ve heard so many things, so I want to see it and feel it for myself. In the Premier League, the atmosphere is – I think – the best atmosphere in the world and the fans have a big role in that. I’m ready to go!”

Despite his young age, Xavi already has plenty of experience around Europe. He told us about some of his endeavours to date: “I was born in Amsterdam, I grew up in Spain, then I made the step to Paris. PSG represented my first professional steps and I think as well with some of the best players in the world. Then I went to PSV. It shaped me in my way of playing, playing consistently – it was really important for me with a coach like Ruud van Nistelrooy. Then I made the move to Germany, playing two full seasons in the Bundesliga and Champions League. With that experience, I felt it was time to come here.

“For me, the dedication will always be there, the hard work will be there, I just need to be happy, I need to be in a place where I know I can develop with the players and, not only them, with the coach as well. That’s the important thing for me, to be the best version of myself.”

Description

It’s home games galore on Saturday, with two Academy matches taking place at Hotspur Way back-to-back.

Our Under-18s will get the action underway with a league game against Crystal Palace, kick-off 11am.

Joe Staunton’s side are unbeaten in all competitions since the start of the season, but are sure to face a stern test against the Eagles.

Straight afterwards, our Under-21s host Nottingham Forest in the Premier League 2, kick-off 1pm.

Matches against Forest at Development Squad level have been rare in the modern era – we’ve never before faced them in the Premier League 2, although we did beat them 4-3 in the Premier League Cup semi-final in 2023/24 – meaning it’s a fresh challenge for Wayne Burnett’s troops as they return to league duties following Tuesday night’s dramatic 4-4 draw and subsequent penalty shootout loss at Bristol Rovers in the Vertu Trophy.

Both matches will be available to watch live on SPURSPLAY, the club’s home of live and on-demand video content.

You’ll also be able to follow live text updates via our Match Centres – one for Crystal Palace Under-18s and one for Nottingham Forest Under-21s – here on tottenhamhotspur.com and the Spurs Official app.

As always, we’ll have post-match coverage available across club channels too.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday afternoon, Thomas reported: "Yes, he could feature, he's in the squad and that's very positive for us."

Thomas also confirmed that Yves Bissouma wasn't fit to face Bournemouth. "He's out for the next game, I don't have a specific timeline for him, but I don't think it will be that long."

The making of Xavi: From La Masia to north London

The making of Xavi: From La Masia to north London - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Welcome to Spurs, Xavi Simons!

On Friday afternoon, we welcomed an exciting addition to the squad with the signing of the attacking midfielder on a long-term deal.

The Netherlands international will wear the number seven shirt and arrives following an impressive two-year spell with RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga.

Still only 22, the young playmaker has been one of the hottest properties amongst his age group throughout his fledgling career and here we chart his journey from the start to Spurs.

Home in Holland and an iconic namesake

Xavi was born in Amsterdam on 21 April, 2003, and spent his early years in the nation’s capital.

Named after the former Barcelona and Spain icon, Xavi Hernandez, he was three years old when his family moved to Alicante on Spain’s east coast.

Showing a keen interest in the game from a young age, Xavi started out at local club CD Thader, and the likes of Elche, Villarreal and Cadiz soon came calling. However, it was who Barcelona swooped for the seven-year-old and the decision was made to join their illustrious academy.

Made in La Masia

Joining the Catalan giants in 2010, Xavi was small in stature but large in character, possessing speed, technical ability and, most impressive of all, a work ethic and winning mentality that saw him captain various youth sides as he progressed through the academy system at La Masia.

Starting out in Barca’s Under-8s, he quickly developed into a hot prospect and a gem that had gained recognition beyond the pitch. By 14, the promising midfielder had broken into the Under-16s and gained over a million followers on social media as fans engaged with the journey of the distinctive frizzy, golden-haired teen.

Featuring regularly in Barca’s Cadete B (Under-16) title-winning side in 2017/18, he was promoted to the Cadete A the following campaign and was soon given the captain’s armband – regularly pictured motivating his team-mates in a pre-match huddle – leading them to victory in the league that term.

That summer, after nine years in Barcelona’s academy, the starlet made the difficult decision to depart the Blaugrana to join Paris Saint-Germain – following in his idol Neymar Jr’s footsteps.

From PSG to PSV

Starting a new chapter in Paris, Xavi - whose mother instructed him to learn French to help him better integrate in the capital - initially played in the Under-19s and featured 18 times in that age group across the league, cup and UEFA Youth League.

Into his second season, the then 17-year-old made his non-competitive first team debut for PSG in a pre-season friendly against Sochaux in August, 2020, and was an unused substitute in their Ligue 1 opener at Lens two months later.

Continuing to shine in the Under-19s during the first half of the campaign, the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino as head coach in January, 2021 saw the young talent gain more exposure to the first team – starring the likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe, Angel di Maria and later Lionel Messi – and made his debut at SM Caen in the Coupe de France in February, 2021.

His maiden Ligue 1 outing would come in April, 2021, coming off the bench in the closing stages of 4-1 win away to Strasbourg, and tasted silverware for the first time as Les Parisiens lifted consecutive league and cup titles.

Having represented the Netherlands at every youth level from Under-15, the attacking midfielder returned to his country of birth and enjoyed his breakthrough in the Dutch top tier.

Xavi announced himself in style with a goal on debut to help PSV beat Ajax in the Johan Cruyff Shield and went on to register 19 league goals, as well as nine assists, to finish as the league’s joint-top scorer. He ended his spell there with 48 appearances in all competitions, seven of those in the UEFA Europa League, including a vital assist for the equaliser in the KNVB Cup final against Ajax before his side won on penalties to add another winners’ medal.

Oranje call-up and Bundesliga bound

Following his blistering start in Eindhoven, the creative talent received his first call-up to the Dutch senior squad for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar over November and December. On the bench throughout the group stage, Xavi came on against the USA in the last 16 for his international debut and, at 19 years old, became the youngest-ever player to feature for his country in the knockout stages of the competition.

On the world stage and lighting it up in his homeland, former side PSG exercised their buy-back option to re-sign the midfielder in the summer of 2023 who was immediately loaned to RB Leipzig to continue his development.
