Loan update | Lankshear scores for Oxford United - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Will Lankshear netted his second goal for loan club Oxford United on Saturday to help them take their first point of the season at home to Coventry City.

The striker fired home in the 19th minute to make it 1-1 at the Kassam Stadium, reacting sharply to find the net after Cameron Branagan’s free-kick was parried by visiting goalkeeper Carl Rushworth.

Coventry, whose opener came via Haji Wright, later regained the lead through Victor Torp but after Will had a further headed goal ruled out for offside, Branagan equalised again to ensure the match finished 2-2.

Will opened his account for the U’s a fortnight ago in a 3-2 defeat at Hull City.

Spurs 0-1 Bournemouth | Every word of Thomas Frank's press conference - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Thomas Frank spoke to the media at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after our 1-0 loss against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

Here's what he had to say...

Q1: What was the team missing today?

Thomas: "We clearly didn’t perform well today. We played against a very good Bournemouth team that we know can make it difficult for any team in the league. They played to their strengths. They did that very well and we didn’t handle it well. We knew exactly what they came with and we trained for it. We just didn’t handle it well enough in terms of the balls in behind, the second balls, duels in the middle of the park. That’s the defensive side and on the offensive side we struggled to find good enough solutions to get through phase one and two so we could get up there and put a bit of pressure on them. We only did that in the last 15 where we put on good pressure and could have equalised. I think over the game it was fair that Bournemouth won."

The lack of creativity will be partially addressed by Xavi Simons, but do you need any more signings to address it in the final days of the window?

"It’s fair to say we didn’t defend as well as we should do and we have done in the first three games. I am quite confident we will come back to defend well again, but that could have helped massively. The creativity, yes, that’s why we signed Simons to have an extra offensive player but I also think on the day with all due respect to our offensive players, none of them hit a high level and that happens sometimes. I’m very aware. I don’t want to say it’s okay, but it’s natural."

Are you concerned about Dominic Solanke’s ankle injury?

"I’m hopeful he will be back after the international break."

Due to Solanke’s injury, will you consider signing a centre-forward? You didn’t have a natural striker to bring off the bench today?

"No. I would say not particularly. To have the three strikers in the squad can also cause a problem as you can only play one at a time. It’s a fine balance. I’m not saying we will never go for another striker at another time but I’m happy with Dom and Richarlison."

The Spurs fans booed at half-time and full time, could you understand that?

"I prefer them not to boo, but I understand. It was not a good performance today and they have high expectations, which is absolutely fair. I think let's say if we perform even better and still lose the football match today, I don't think we hit the level we should. I think the players gave everything and then that's the foundation and put their hearts out there, but football wise we didn't hit our top level today."

Does today show that there is work to do to get the squad to the level that you want?

"Yes, but it's not about only making the squad the level. It's also for us to not manage, but play different games. There's one game against City, one kind of football, different kind of football against Burnley. Bournemouth completely different third kind of football and all kinds of football you need to be able to perform against, and we struggled with it."

How excited are you to sign Xavi Simons?

"Yes, very excited, very happy that we signed him. I think it was a great signing from the club. He can play 10 or left winger, those are the two main positions."

On Dominic Solanke's injury, is there any reason why it's resurfaced?

"Sometimes, you know, we just take a little bit longer time. It's easier. It's not like he re-injured it again, so you can say if you have a muscle injury, then you can maybe reinjure, it's nothing to do with that. It's not progressing as quick as we hoped for, but we are still positive that it can be solved in the next two weeks."

How do you reflect on your first three league games in charge and have you got any plans for the international break?

"I think two good performances and one bad, so I would like to avoid bad performances. I think the lower level was too low today, so that's what we need to raise. I think, again, work ethic and character in the team was good, but I think we lacked some football bits."

When you've got a game like that where you're struggling to break them down, what can Xavi bring with his skill set?

"I think he can bring on a day where I can say our structure building up and all that because it's not only about that, then sometimes you need a player that can do something a little bit out of nothing, go past the player, produce a cross, a shot, a pass, with that extra quality that you need on the day, and that's what I think he can bring."

Akhamrich fires Under-21s to victory in rare meeting with Forest - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Yusuf Akhamrich’s second-half goal gave our Under-21s a slender home win over Nottingham Forest at Hotspur Way on Saturday afternoon.

The attacking midfielder had seen a handful of earlier shots blocked as we searched for a way through in what was our first-ever Premier League 2 meeting with the men from the City Ground.

But he timed his run to perfection to fire home the game’s only goal following good work in the build-up from Luca Williams-Barnett and Reiss Russell-Denny, with some solid defending ensuring Wayne Burnett’s side made a deserved return to winning ways after a cagey contest in Enfield.

With a Premier League Cup semi-final between the sides in 2023/24 representing the only other time we’ve faced Forest’s Under-21s competitively in recent years, it was a rare fresh opponent for us, although we had to be patient in pursuit of a breakthrough. Williams-Barnett fired wide while we saw a handful of shots blocked in the Forest box over the course of the first half, Tynan Thompson stinging the palms of goalkeeper Luke Campbell and Russell-Denny also firing straight at the visiting custodian from distance in the run-up to the interval.

Forest were a bit more of an attacking threat in the second period, Lamin Sillah’s header from a corner cleared from inside the six-yard by Russell-Denny. However, we finally managed to break Forest’s resistance with a well-worked goal in the 66th minute. Williams-Barnett surged forward into space from inside our own half and shifted the ball right to Russell-Denny, who produced a trademark pinpoint pass from deep for Akhamrich to run onto on the overlap with perfect timing to drill past Campbell from a tight angle.

Both of our centre-halves made big blocks as Forest tried to respond, Jun’ai Byfield deflecting Fuad Smith’s effort over the bar while Malachi Hardy crucially got in the way of Sillah’s drive following a cut-back from the left by Jamie Newton. A steady flow of changes in the closing moments helped us to see out the game, as we registered our second win of the campaign heading into the international break.

‘The timing was excellent, the pass was excellent’

Coach Wayne praised his players for their first-half performance in particular, while he was also pleased with the manner of the goal. He told us: “I felt in the first half we were very good – our football was excellent, we got into some dangerous positions and we were really pleased with the high-energy and clever play on show. In the second half it was a bit more difficult and we couldn’t find the solutions we needed to. Credit to Nottingham Forest – they came with intensity – but we couldn’t find the solutions and perform as well as we did in the first half.”

Describing the goal, Wayne continued: “It was really good work from Luca to drive forward, he played it across to Reiss and he found Yusuf – the timing was excellent, the pass was excellent and it was a very good goal. From our point of view as well, it was pleasing to keep a clean sheet, having not managed to do that in our first three games of the season. That’s something we spoke about and were keen to achieve, so it was pleasing that we managed to do that today.”

Spurs 0-1 Bournemouth | Thomas Frank’s verdict: “No excuses - we should do better” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Thomas Frank gave an honest assessment of our performance after a 1-0 loss against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday.

The visitors impressed, particularly in the first half, where they scored what turned out to be the only goal of the game - Evanilson’s shot deflected of Cuti Romero sliding in and looped over Guglielmo Vicario on five minutes - and ran up 10 efforts at goal to our zero, a rarity in N17.

“It was a tough one,” said Thomas, speaking on our Review Show. “We played against a good Bournemouth team that played to their strengths, played exactly what we expected from them, but we didn’t handle it well enough, clearly.

“They are very good playing in behind, which we know, very good to land on second balls, which we know, very good early crosses, small passes, early, and that surprised, me with how good we’ve been, defensively, we struggled a little with that.

“Also, it’s a type of football you don’t see that often. No excuses - we should do better.

"Offensively, also... so, overall, not a top performance, and we struggled to create chances. What I saw from the players is that they gave everything, they gave their hearts, but on the day, we just didn’t hit the right performance.”

Cherries claim slender win in N17 - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our unbeaten start to the Premier League season came to a disappointing end on Saturday afternoon as Bournemouth’s early goal was enough to secure them all three points.

Having kept back-to-back clean sheets in our opening two victories, we conceded just five minutes in at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Evanilson’s deflected effort finding the back of the net.

Had it not been for the outstanding performance of Guglielmo Vicario, it would have been an even heavier defeat as the Italy international made a string of excellent saves to prevent Bournemouth extending their lead. It wasn’t until the closing stages that we put any pressure on the Cherries’ defence but managed just one shot on target throughout the match as we suffered a frustrating defeat.

Thomas Frank kept faith with the side that started last weekend’s win at Manchester City and we created an opportunity inside the first minute as Pape Matar Sarr got in down the left flank but Bournemouth scrambled the ball away. Instead, we fell behind in the fifth minute. Marcos Senesi threaded a pass into Evanilson and his left-foot drive flicked off Cristian Romero and looped over Vicario, the first goal we’d conceded in the league this season. It should have been 2-0 six minutes later but a wonderful David Brooks cross was headed over six yards out by Antoine Semenyo.

The visitors were having all the chances in the early stages, Vicario having to dive across to his left to push away a curling Brooks free-kick before the Cherries man headed Alex Scott’s corner over. In truth, we just never got going in the first period with the visitors snuffing out every attack we tried to create with tight marking and strong tackling. We ended the half without a single effort at goal, very much second best and with plenty of work to do.

However, it was Bournemouth on the front foot again to open up the second period, Semenyo’s angled left-foot shot excellently tipped away by Vicario. And we escaped moments later as the keeper was quickly off his line to smother Evanilson from close range and, on the rebound, Brooks’ shot flicked off Vicario and hit the crossbar before we cleared the danger. It was virtually a one-man show keeping the visitors out as Vicario then made another diving save to deny Brooks in the 53rd minute.

Less than 10 minutes into the half, we made a double switch with Wison Odobert and Lucas Bergvall replacing Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha and our first shot on target came in the 69th minute when Richarlison set up Bergvall whose effort from the edge of the box was straight at Dorde Petrovic. Back up the other end, Vicario was at it again, stand up big to keep out Tyler Adams’ effort from a tight angle before an opportunity fell our way in the 79th minute when substitute Destiny Udogie’s cut-back bounced nicely for Odobert but his effort was way over the bar.

We were finally able to exert some pressure on the Bournemouth defence in the final 10 minutes as they dropped deep to protect their slender advantage and we almost scored a stunning equaliser when Mathys Tel’s acrobatic shot from 18 yards out flew a couple of yards wide. One final chance came our way deep into seven minutes of stoppage time as Mohammed Kudus – who kept trying to make things happen down our right flank – whipped in a free-kick from out wide and Udogie got a glancing header to the ball, only to see it drift past the far upright.
