Under-18s salvage stoppage-time draw with Reading... again! - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

History repeated itself in remarkable fashion as our Under-18s snatched a 95th-minute equaliser to draw 2-2 with Reading at Hotspur Way for the second time in less than two weeks on Wednesday – although there was a distinctly different feeling among the players and staff this time around following a below-par showing over the course of the game.

After Armend Muslika memorably struck in the fifth added minute to rescue a deserved point in our season curtain-raiser a week ago on Saturday, it was captain Elijah Upson who netted late on in this Under-18 Premier League Cup opener – incredibly, also with 95 on the watch – as we again recovered to secure a share of the spoils.

But the manner of the performance on this occasion left everyone with a sense of frustration at the final whistle. We’d found ourselves under pressure for long periods after Oliver Salter opened his account, with two goals in two minutes from Reading substitute Ainsley Covus turning the tie around after the break.

You could sense that coming, although to our credit we found some renewed impetus in the last few moments, new signing Conall Glancy impressive on his debut with fellow substitute Toju Wellspring – an Under-16s player – making a big impact in the middle. Indeed, it was his superb cross that saw Upson power home a header in the last couple of minutes to put our first point on the board in Group H – the defender earning redemption in the process after being sent off in the previous draw with the Royals – but with further matches against Burnley and Derby County still to come, we’re likely to need maximum points from here on in if we’re to reach the knockout phase.

Salter marked his first start at this level with his first goal inside five minutes, running onto Ronny Moncur’s cut-back from the right to plant a low shot into the net. He could have doubled his tally moments later after a great solo run, but teased his effort just wide.

Reading started to assert themselves on the game soon afterwards, their captain Larry Omoregie having a couple of near-misses before seeing an effort on the counter ruled out for offside. Omari Bailey coaxed a flying save out of our goalkeeper Blake Irow at the start of the second half before George Booth slid wide as the Royals stayed on the offensive. Their pressure eventually told as Covus volleyed Ryan Zie’s cross in off the far post on 63 minutes before pouncing on a mistake at the back 60 seconds later to clip the ball over the stranded Irow for 2-1.

Omoregie was a whisker away with an audacious long-range lob while Irow produced a superb save to deny Covus his hat-trick with nine minutes remaining, but our substitutes – as was the case in our league win at Norwich City on Saturday – made an impact and we started to play forward more in the closing stages. Glancy produced some nice footwork to set up Muslika for a shot in the box, but he saw his effort blocked with Salter also denied on the follow-up.

With the wind whipping up, we kept probing and finally conjured up an equaliser in added time, Wellspring’s excellent delivery from the right powerfully headed home by Upson. We still had time to win it, but Reading closed ranks and the spoils were shared.

‘Missing some of the non-negotiables’

Interim Under-18s Coach Joe Staunton felt the overall performance needed to be better despite the late equaliser, telling SPURSPLAY: “We were disappointing today. We were lacklustre with the ball at times, there were quite a few technical turnovers and unfortunately we were missing some of the non-negotiables in terms of working hard, picking up second balls and running back when we were required to do so.

“Although we managed to turn the game around and get something at the end of it, we’re disappointed with the way it went. I thought we were fortunate to be 1-0 up at half-time and in the second half, we weren’t able to take control. In giving away two cheap goals, it cost us an opportunity and we had to work ever-so hard to get something out of the game at the end.”

Joao Palhinha named Premier League's Player of the Matchweek after dominating in win over Manchester City - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Joao Palhinha has been named the Premier League's Player of the Matchweek after his imperious display against Manchester City.

Making his full league debut for the Club at the Etihad Stadium as we ran out 2-0 winners to continue our 100 per cent start to the new campaign, Joao picked up where he left off in the top flight with a display full of tackles and interceptions.

Having made more tackles than any other player in the Premier League during his two years at Fulham (2022-2024) - Joao made 300 tackles in two seasons, 109 more than any other player - he added another four to that in the win in Manchester on Saturday.

Incredibly, despite spending an entire year away for England's top flight with Bayern in the Bundesliga, only two players have managed to overtake the midfielder in terms of the number of tackles made - Chelsea's Moises Caicedo (305) and Everton's Idrissa Gueye (303).

But Joao has much more than tackles and interceptions to his game, as Saturday showed - the Portugal international getting himself into the Manchester City box once we had turned over possession to fire our second goal home. That was goal number 850 on the road for us in the Premier League.

And now our number six has been honoured for his efforts at the Etihad - and it is all thanks to your votes!

Yesterday, we put a call out to you the Spurs faithful to support Joao and cast a vote for him to become the Premier League's Player of the matchweek - and that is exactly what you did.

Having already named him your HSBC Player of the Match, you voted for the midfielder in your droves to a point where he ultimately won the contest by more than 10 per cent.

Joao took home 31% of the vote, edging Liverpool's Rio Ngumoha (22%) and Arsenal's Jurrien Timber (17%).

And it now means we have won each of the first two iterations of the prize with Richarlison having scooped the honour last week.

Congratulations, Joao!

Carabao Cup third round draw - everything you need to know... - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

We take our place in the draw for the third round of the Carabao (EFL) Cup this evening - here's everything you need to know...

When is the draw?

The draw takes place live on Sky Sports following coverage of the second round tie between Grimsby Town and Manchester United at Blundell Park. That game kicks-off at 8pm, so we're looking at around 10pm for the draw.

What number are we?

We're waiting on that - the EFL are due to release draw numbers this (Wednesday) morning - we'll update this story with our number as soon as we know.

Watch | last season's third round thriller at Coventry

How does the draw work?

The draw consists of 32 clubs, 23 winners from the second round, plus nine Premier League clubs competing in UEFA competitions.

Two separate bowls will be utilised - one consisting of the UCL and UEL Clubs, and one consisting of the remaining 24 clubs (the UEFA Conference League - including Palace, should they qualify - doesn't start until October, so doesn't affect this draw). As the balls will be split across two pots, a pre-draw will be required first to determine whether each of the eight UCL/UEL teams will be playing home or away - this will take place live on Sky Sports during the build-up to the Grimsby-United tie.

For the main draw, the first eight ties will be drawn by alternating between one club from Bowl 1 and one club from Bowl 2, with the home/away positioning of the UCL/UEL team already pre-determined in the earlier pre-draw. Once the first eight ties featuring the UCL/UEL teams have been drawn, the remaining eight ties will then be drawn from Bowl 2 only.

When does the third round take place?

Like last season, the third round will be split over the weeks commencing 15 September and 22 September. This is for clubs participating in the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League - MD1 of this season's UCL is scheduled for 16-18 September, so our Carabao Cup tie will be scheduled for w/c 22 September.

What's our recent record in the third round?

* This was in the fourth round - we received a bye against Leyton Orient in the third round

How many times have we won the League Cup?

We've won it four times - 1971, 1973, 1999 and 2008.

Under-21s earn point before shootout woe in Bristol Rovers thriller - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Under-21s’ Vertu Trophy campaign began in gripping fashion on Tuesday night as our young side battled out a 4-4 draw at Bristol Rovers, playing the last 25 minutes with 10 men before losing the subsequent penalty shootout 5-4.

Leading 3-0 inside 16 minutes and playing some superb stuff at times, a key moment arrived mid-way through the second half when goalkeeper Sam Archer saw red for his challenge on Ryan Howley outside the box with the score at 4-2.

Isaac Hutchinson fired the resulting free-kick past substitute goalkeeper Aaron Maguire before Rovers substitute Fabrizio Cavegn levelled it up four minutes later. At that stage, the hosts were in the ascendancy but we dug in superbly to see out the game despite the disadvantage in numbers and earn a point in Southern Group B.

However, there was more drama in the subsequent shootout for an extra point – after we’d trailed early on, Maguire made a crucial save to give Calum Logan a chance to win it for us, but his deft effort was kept out by former Leicester City goalkeeper Brad Young, who subsequently pulled off a superb stop to deny James Rowswell and give his side the win.

It was an enthralling game and in truth, the share of the initial spoils was the least we deserved as well-taken goals from Luca Williams-Barnett and Yusuf Akhamrich, bookended by two equally clinical efforts from Tynan Thompson, put us in the driving seat for much of the contest. Williams-Barnett pulled off two sublime pieces of individual skill to go close twice in the second period – either one could have proved decisive, but in the end we had to settle for a solitary point before suffering penalty shootout disappointment.

There were strange similarities to our visit to the Memorial Stadium in this competition last season where honours ended even at 3-3 before the game went to penalties. There was a different narrative for us this time, however, with two 16-year-olds and two 17-year-olds in a particularly youthful starting line-up – including both centre-halves – and they were among many who came out in credit after a mature display against our senior hosts, who had kept back-to-back home clean sheets in League Two coming into the contest.

One of the youngsters, Malachi Hardy, made a miraculous early goal-line clearance to deny Ollie Dewsbury after Ellis Harrison’s effort in the first minute was ruled out for offside – indeed, the hosts were frustrated by the linesman’s flag multiple times throughout the night as we defended dutifully while looking threatening every time we pushed forward.

We broke the deadlock on 10 minutes when Williams-Barnett collected the ball in midfield, he spotted Young off his line but instead of attempting his trademark effort from distance, picked the right pass to Thompson marauding down the left and he finished clinically from the angle. Four minutes later, a fine pass from the superb Reiss Russell-Denny sent Williams-Barnett clean through on goal and he sat Young down at the edge of his area before rolling the ball home. And it got even better within two minutes of that as Oli Irow played Akhamrich down the right and he finished well inside the near post on his right foot.

Our dominance forced Rovers to change shape, but their first goal was of our own making as a mistake at the back allowed Harrison to fire high into the net in first-half stoppage time, reducing our lead to 3-1. Nine minutes after the restart, the hosts pulled another one back when Cavegn got the better of right-back Rowswell and blasted past Archer, although Williams-Barnett almost replied with a dazzling individual moment, sitting a defender down and producing an audacious 360-degree turn to beat advancing keeper Young, only to fire wide as he steadied himself again.

Thompson took matters into his own hands to restore our two-goal cushion on 58 minutes, though, cutting inside from the left and producing a fine finish into the far top corner from a tight angle, right in front of the away end. But Archer’s dismissal after rushing out of his area to challenge the onrushing Howley seven minutes later changed the course of the tie, Hutchinson curling the resulting free-kick home to bring it back to 4-3.

Williams-Barnett tried a lob from distance but saw his effort drift wide, but Rovers had their tails up and after Dewsbury fired over, Cavegn saw off the retreating Jun’ai Byfield before firing home to level the scores with 17 minutes remaining. You’d have fancied Bristol Rovers to win at that stage but Cavegn – twice – and Dewsbury squandered opportunities as our 10 men gave everything to make it to the final whistle and secure a point.

Then came the shootout, with Russell-Denny and Howley firing over the bar as both sides scored three of their first four. Maguire later saved Dewsbury’s kick brilliantly down to his right to give us a chance to win it, but Logan’s attempt was kept out by the foot of Young, who then superbly saved Rowswell’s fierce effort after Taylor Moore had scored to give his side the extra point on offer.

Richarlison named in latest Brazil squad - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Richarlison's fine start to the season has been rewarded with an international call up to the Brazil squad for concluding FIFA 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia.

Our number nine netted a superb brace against Burnley in the Premier League opener, featuring an acrobatic second goal that drew comparisons to his scissor kick at the 2022 World Cup, to scoop the division's inaugural Player of the Gameweek and contributed an assist for Brennan Johnson's opener in our impressive 2-0 win at Manchester City last time out.

Having ended a 586-day absence for Brazil with a start against Ecuador during the previous international break in June, Richy then earned his 50th cap in a 1-0 over Paraguay as Carlo Ancelotti's side sealed their spot at next summer's major tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Selected for successive Seleção squads in 2025, the five-time World Cup winners round off their CONMEBOL qualifying campaign by hosting Chile at the Maracanã on Friday 5 September (kick-off 1.30am UK) before a trip to Bolivia five days later (12.30am UK) looking to secure second spot behind group winners Argentina.
