850 away goal milestone hit in the Premier League at Manchester City - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

In Saturday's impressive 2-0 win at Manchester City, we scored our 850th away goal in the Premier League.

As we produced a professional and commanding performance at the Etihad Stadium, we struck our 849th and 850th goals on the road to become just the fifth side in the history of the competition to reach the landmark figure (also Manchester United (1040), Arsenal (976), Liverpool (975) and Chelsea (937)).

Our first away goal in the Premier League came in competition's first month as Jason Cundy scored a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town in August, 1992.

We have now scored a total of 1958 goals in the Premier League, 1108 coming at home while 850 have come on the road.

In terms of our record at our various Premier League opponents across the years, we hold the best goalscoring record in visits to Hull City. On our trips to their ground, now known as the MKM Stadium, we have scored 17 goals there across five visits (3.4 goals per game), which includes a 7-1 win there in May, 2017.

Against just one other team in the competition do we hold a record of at least three goals per game on our trips to face them - that is Huddersfield Town (six goals in two visits - three goals per game).

We have a record of at least two goals per game against another three teams - Bradford City, Cardiff City and Swansea City.

Against all bar one of the 50 teams to ever played in the competition we hold a record of at least one goal per game. The only team we have not managed that against is now Championship side Portsmouth. In the south coast side's time in the top flight, we only scored six goals in seven visits to Fratton Park.

We have scored the most goals on the road at Everton having scored 58 goals at Goodison Park in the top flight since 1992. Saturday's opponents Manchester City come in a close second with 55.

Incredibly, despite visiting the likes of Barnsley, Blackpool, Luton Town and Swindon Town just once in the top flight, we have scored on the road at every one of our 50 Premier League opponents to date.

‘It’s a nice feeling to be back, doing what I love’ – Kit Graham - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Saturday afternoon was a long time coming for Kit Graham.

Making a late cameo in our thrilling 4-3 pre-season win over Arsenal, Kit brought to the end 358 painful days of being sidelined with injury.

Having suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL) in pre-season last year, after almost 12 months of rehabilitation and recovery, our number 16 finally returned to a matchday squad as we faced the test of the Gunners.

And, as we entered the final 20 minutes of the contest, that even sweeter moment came for the 29-year-old as she was called on from the bench to replace Matilda Vinberg and mark her return from injury.

Given a great reception from her team-mates and our staff as she ran back onto the pitch after nearly a year out, Kit beamed when she spoke to SPURSPLAY at full-time as she reflected on the relief of being back in action.

“It’s been a long time coming,” she told us. “I’ve felt ready for a little while now, so it was a nice feeling to actually get back out there and do what I love doing.

“It was quite a hectic game to come into, but hopefully the next one’s a bit more settled, and I can get a few more touches on the ball and feel more a part of the team. I’ve been enjoying training, I’ve felt good, so I’m just glad to get my first minutes.

“I’ve felt ready for a little while, I just needed a bit more time in team training but I’m looking forward to getting back out there, feeling more myself, and hopefully bringing some calm - unlike today, which was a bit hectic.”

In a time where support is needed through a long rehabilitation process from an ACL injury, Kit was full of praise for her team-mates and the staff who were with her every step of the way to get her back on the pitch.

“Honestly, I couldn’t have asked for better team-mates or staff,” she added. “Everybody goes above and beyond for everyone in the team, and I couldn’t be more grateful for their support.

“It was a horrible injury, a long time out and [it can be] quite isolating but having great people around you really helps motivate you to get back to doing what you want to do.”

Reflecting on pre-season so far, she said: “It’s a good feeling. A lot has changed, but we’re enjoying it.

“It’s going to take time, but I feel like we’re really starting to implement what [Martin Ho’s] asking of us. That’s all we can do. We can only get bigger and better, so I’m looking forward to more games, more opportunities, and gelling more as a team.”

Palhinha prouder of ‘team mentality’ than his own ‘special moment’ at City

Palhinha prouder of ‘team mentality’ than his own ‘special moment’ at City - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Imagine scoring your first goal for Spurs on your first start to secure a win at Manchester City... Palhinha did just that, but he explained he was prouder of team’s mentality in the 2-0 win then of his own vital contribution.

Joao provided that extra layer of protection alongside Rodrigo Bentancur in an outstanding midfield display that saw Pape Matar Sarr pushed slightly further forward and a constant thorn in City’s side.

Indeed, it was no surprise to see the Senegal star involved in both goals – his flick sent Richarlison away to set up for opener for Brennan Johnson on 35 minutes and then in first half injury time, Joao’s moment as Pape robbed Nico Gonzalez before Joao fired home for 2-0.

That’s how it stayed at the Etihad, with a couple of moments in the second half illustrating Joao’s view – first up, he made a superb block to deny Nathan Ake, celebrated like his goal, before Micky van de Ven’s block to deny Jeremy Doku – moments to delight Thomas Frank on the touchline.

Asked about his goal-den moment, Joao reflected: “It was a special moment for me, of course, returning to the Premier League and scoring a goal like this, it’s always special, and really important, but what I need to take from this game is the mentality of the team and the way that I saw my team-mates running behind, helping each other. This is what makes me more proud of this game, to be honest.

“For me, sometimes a tackle is more important or has the same importance as a goal. I remember this (mine), but I also remember the tackle that Micky did on a transition, and that kind of action is what makes the difference.

“At the end of the game, you know, you see that mentality, and this is why we push and push each other, because I think when we are like that, we are much closer to winning games.”

Can you name our 177 Premier League goalscorers? - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

It's quiz time! Joao Palhinha extended our Premier League record for the most different scorers in the competition for a single club as he became our 177th different goalscorer in the league with his strike at Manchester City on Saturday. But, can you name all 177 of our goalscorers?

Since the inception of the Premier League in 1992, an incredible 177 different players have found the back of the net for us in the top flight. How many can you name?

Well that is the challenge we're proposing to you!

To take on the challenge, click the green 'Play Quiz' button below to get started before inputting your answers in the box titled 'enter player'.

You will have 20 minutes to name as many of the 177 players as you can. To help, the amount of goals they scored for the Club in the Premier League plus the country they are from are listed either side of their relevant answer box.

Helpful tip: If the player you are guessing has a multiple word surname, such as 'Giovani dos Santos', just type in the final word, ie. Santos, to score the point. For players with double-barrelled surnames, such as 'Cameron Carter-Vickers', you need to write the full surname, ie. Carter-Vickers.

Best of luck!

“A positive step on our journey into the new season” - Bethany England

“A positive step on our journey into the new season” - England - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Bethany England acknowledges the win over Arsenal in pre-season was a ‘step forward’ but says there’s still plenty to work on ahead of our 2025/26 Barclays Women’s Super League opener next month.

It was an eventful game at Meadow Park against our north London rivals, with seven goals between the two sides, and our number nine was at the heart of our impressive win against our north London rivals.

Earning her first start in pre-season, Bethany grabbed the equaliser in the first half before getting us back on level terms in the second period, calmly converting from the penalty spot, to inspire us to a 4-3 victory after further goals from Matilda Vinberg and Eveliina Summanen.

While we secured our first win under Head Coach Martin Ho following an improved second half display, the experienced forward spoke about the importance of learning from the ‘silly mistakes’ as we continue to build towards the WSL opener against West Ham.

“We started slow, I didn’t think in the first half we got up to the level we wanted to be at and we knew we could do better,” she told SPURSPLAY. “[In the] second half, we really came out, got aggressive, got in their faces, and got the goals back.

“Look, they’re champions. I know it wasn’t their full-strength team today, but we’re still building and for us, it’s an amazing preseason win and we’ll definitely take that going into our next game.”

Asked about the performance in the second half, she added: “I think we just stopped feeling sorry for ourselves. We recognised where we were going wrong, where they were exploiting us, and we had to cut out silly mistakes.

“In the second half, we made it easier for ourselves, making the right passes, playing quicker, wanting it more, being hungrier, and getting in the fight. That’s exactly what we gave them and thankfully, we came out on top today.

“We’re not delusional. There were parts of the game that were nowhere near good enough, and we’ll get punished in this league on another day, so there’s still plenty to build on.

“But I’m happy. It’s not every day you can come here and beat them. We did ourselves proud in some areas and in others, we know we need to be better, but that’s the point of pre-season, to see where improvements can be made and make sure that when we face West Ham, we’re ready to go.”

Her two goals against the Gunners opened her account in pre-season and, after finishing as our top goalscorer last term with eight goals, Bethany talks about the ‘positive step’ going into the new campaign.

“Every striker wants to score. For me, to get as many minutes as I did today and get on the scoresheet, I’m always proud - whether it’s a friendly or not - to score for this club. It’s definitely a great step forward,” she explained.

“Even seeing Matilda and Eveliina getting on the scoresheet shows we’ve got more than one goalscorer as well. It’s a really positive step on our journey into the new season.”

The moment that gave Thomas Frank 'goosebumps' at City

The moment that gave Thomas Frank 'goosebumps' at City - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Thomas Frank described it as a 'defining moment' in our fine 2-0 win at City in the Premier League on Saturday.

However, it wasn't Brennan Johnson's brilliantly-taken first goal, or Palhinha's strike to mark his first start for us in the Premier League, or Guglielmo Vicario's saves to deny Omar Marmoush with City on top in the opening exchanges of the first half.

In fact, we were already 2-0 up, 10 minutes to go and on top, with City struggling to break us down and it looking more likely we'd score a third on the counter.

The moment was Micky van de Ven's block tackle to deny Jeremy Doku on 81 minutes, as City countered from one of our late breaks.

Asked what particularly caught his eye at the Etihad, Thomas told us: "I think a couple of things... in the second half we kept going for 3-0, it’s not like we didn’t want to do that, or we wanted to just see the game out.

"Then the team effort - there is one moment in the game that is defining, I hope it’s defining for a good season, although it’s early, early days. It's in the second half, a transition, 10 players, head down, sprinting back and then ending with Micky’s block. Wow. That gave me goosebumps, because we all want the goal in the top corner, the beautiful play - that, we want as well - but that bit, sprinting back, that will win you a lot of football matches."

Palhinha your Player of the Match after dominant display at Manchester City

Palhinha your Player of the Match after dominant display at Manchester City - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Joao Palhinha has been named your HSBC Player of the Match after his dominant display in our 2-0 win over Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

In a poll run exclusively on the Spurs Official App, Palhinha has taken the majority of your votes to take the crown on what was his full Premier League debut for the Club.

Making his league debut for us off the bench against Burnley in the season opener, this time the Portuguese international lined up from the start alongside Pape Matar Sarr and Rodrigo Bentancur and the trio delivered a midfield masterclass at the Etihad.

A summer arrival on loan from FC Bayern, our number six was a commanding presence in the middle of the park as he brought a calmness in possession and a steel and bite to his defensive contributions by winning eight duels to stifle City's build-up throughout.

Up against Pep Guardiola's City side who enjoy possession and like to play out from the back, our aggressive, high press was a huge factor in the victory and Joao set the tone from the off - pressing Tijjani Reijnders on the edge of their box in the 11th minute - and was later rewarded with a first goal in our colours following our high pressure.

Already a goal up thanks to Brennan Johnson's opener 10 minutes before the break, a City goal-kick on the stroke of half-time saw James Trafford play a short pass into Nico González, who was dispossessed by the ever-impressive Sarr, and the Portuguese midfielder was on hand to rifle in the loose ball to score his first Premier League goal since 30 March 2024 for former side Fulham.

Putting in a fully-committed display - summed up by an excellent sliding block to deny Nathan Ake late on in the first half - Joao rightfully took the acclaim from the Spurs fans packed into the away end as he was replaced by Kevin Danso in the 90th minute.

How many times have we won our first two games of a Premier League season? - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our exceptional performance and 2-0 win at Manchester City on Saturday made it two wins out of two at the start of the 2025/26 Premier League campaign.

Goals from Brennan Johnson and Palhinha secured the points a complete team display deserved at the Etihad as Thomas Frank made it two out of two, with two clean sheets, in the Premier League.

How many times have we won our first two games of a Premier League season?

The answer is eight.

Inspired by Jurgen Klinsmann, we first did it in 1994/95, when the German striker scored in our opener at Sheffield Wednesday and followed it up with a flying volley against Everton - both memorably marked with his 'dive' celebration. We last did it at the start of the 2021/22 season - when we won our first three matches.

We had our best start to a Premier League season in 2023/24, but didn't win the opener - that was a draw at Brentford. We then won eight and drew two of our first 10 games. We were also unbeaten for the first 12 matches of 2016/17, but didn't win the first two games of what was the final season at the Lane - we won six and drew six of those 12. Meanwhile, we've only gone on to win our first four matches of a Premier League season on one occasion in 2009/10, and went on to finish fourth.

Of course, going back beyond the Premier League era, our best-ever start to a season remains an English football record - a season carved into the Club's history - the 1960/61 double-winning season when Bill Nicholson's wonderful team opened with 11 straight wins on the way to First Division title and FA Cup glory.

Team news | Ho’s latest on Bartrip, Ahtinen and Gunning-Williams - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Martin Ho confirmed that Molly Bartrip, Olga Ahtinen and Lenna Gunning-Williams were all left out of Saturday’s friendly against Arsenal with ‘knocks’.

We edged Arsenal in a seven-goal thriller at Meadow Park as Bethany England bagged brace, while Matilda Vinberg and Eveliina Summanen were also on target to earn us a 4-3 win over our north London rivals – Victoria Pelova, an own-goal and Caitlin Foord on the scoresheet for the hosts.

Martin made three changes to his starting XI for the clash while also welcomed the return of Kit Graham to the matchday squad for the first time in 12 months as she stepped off the bench as a second half substitute, but there were three notable absentees from last time out against Sevilla.

Molly, Olga and Lenna were all unavailable for the clash in Borehamwood and our Head Coach provided an update after the game.

“Molly missed out with a knock from the last game we had, Olga the same, and Lenna as well with a short knock”, he told us, when speaking to SPURSPLAY.

“We’ll review and assess them going into next week, and hopefully they’ll be available for the next game against Southampton.”

Martin Ho’s verdict on the win against Arsenal in pre-season - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Martin Ho says the performance was the ‘right direction’ as we edged Arsenal in a seven-goal thriller to win 4-3 on Saturday afternoon and earnt our first win under our new Head Coach.

It was an action-packed north London derby at Meadow Park, with seven goals between the two sides, captain Bethany England netting a brace alongside Matilda Vinberg and Eveliina Summanen also on the scoresheet and, after 12 months out with an anterior cruciate ligament injury, Kit Graham returned to the pitch in the second half.

Our number nine grabbed our first goal of pre-season to cancel out Victoria Pelova’s early opener, but an own goal from Charlotte Grant put the hosts ahead at the break. However, we fought back in the second half as a composed penalty from Bethany and a well-struck effort from Matilda gave us the lead.

And, despite Caitlin Foord scoring an equaliser to make it 3-3, Eveliina’s free-kick in the final quarter-of-an-hour saw us claim an impressive win against our rivals, building positive momentum ahead of our Barclays Women’s Super League opener against West Ham on Sunday 7 September – tickets still available to buy.

Speaking to SPURSPLAY after the game, Martin told us: “I thought for parts in the first half we showed control, but we didn’t really progress much in advance with the ball.

“That’s just a little bit of confidence and bravery with the ball. We spoke about that at half-time, we adjusted some things tactically to get more aggressive pressure, and I thought in the second half, we were better with that pressure. We were closer together and more connected to the press. In those moments, we regained two or three balls, and we either created from them or scored from them, so that’s really pleasing.

“There are a lot of good parts of the game and things we’re trying to implement. It takes a little bit of time, but we’re starting to see those things come together.

Ho on the display in the second half…

“The mentality to come back helps you in games when you’re down, knowing that you can do it and have the belief to do it. More importantly, having the quality to do it, which we do. Then to be able to stay in front, see out the lead, and manage the game — these are all things we need to keep growing and evolving. The more we get into these situations and experience them, the better we’ll become.”

Ho on being clinical in front of goal with four goals…

“It’s really important to score - whether it’s one or four, like today — because it builds confidence in the group. We also know that when we’re in front of goal, we can be ruthless, and that’s what I asked for, from the Seville game and probably at the other end too. We don’t want to be conceding three goals in any game, some of them are our own errors in small tactical parts and certain actions we can be better in. But, more importantly, it’s the mentality and growth of the team that we need to keep focusing on. Today’s performance took us in the right direction.”
