Brennan Johnson: “My mindset? I want to do it all again” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Brennan Johnson is crystal clear on his targets stepping into a new season.

The forward carved his name in Spurs folklore by scoring the winner in the UEFA Europa League Final against United in Bilbao in May.

Six weeks later, he was back at Hotspur Way ready to prepare for a new season. Six weeks further on, he opened his account for 2025/26 with a beautifully taken goal to complete a 3-0 win against Burnley on Saturday, our Premier League opener, Thomas Frank’s first Premier League game in charge.

Top scorer with 18 in all competitions last term, Brennan knows he will be remembered forever in N17 for that winner in Bilbao.

So, what was his mindset coming back to work?

Speaking on our Review Show on Saturday, he told us: “For me personally, it’s just wanting to replicate it, wanting to do it again. It felt good, obviously, it was 17 years (wait for a trophy) for the club. There was kind of a feeling of relief around the place and obviously a lot of joy but for me, as a player, it made me look at it differently.

“I want to be like the players who are serial winners, winning so many competitions, because I'm sure the feeling doesn't get any worse. I think it gets better every time, so, yes, I want to replicate it. I want to come back, work hard, and I want to do it again with Spurs.

“That's the biggest thing. Obviously, it was such a long time, and I think the squad last season put themselves into the history books, obviously winning the European trophy. I think we all want to do it again. We've come into a new season now, the manager’s made it clear that there's a few competitions this season that we want to go far in... and why not?”

Calling all dog-loving Spurs fans around the world! This is your chance to combine your passion for your Club and your pets while raising money for a cause close to all our hearts.

Tottenham Hotspur is the Club for animal-lovers and last year created the first Official Supporters’ Club for dog-owners, Tottenham Hotspaw - inspired by the Club’s many dog-loving staff, fans and players across both its men’s and women’s teams.

On International Dog Day (Tuesday 26 August), the Club is launching Steps with Pets – its first global charity dog-walking challenge, powered by global walking app Walk15 and supported by Frontier Pets, in aid of All Dogs Matter - a charity that works in and around London to transform the lives of unwanted and abandoned dogs.

The challenge runs from Tuesday 26 August until Sunday 7 September, with pre-registrations open on the Walk15 app now. The more steps you take with your pets, the more chance you have to win special prizes.

The Club has worked with All Dogs Matter for over a year, promoting one of its rescue dogs up for adoption - alongside a ‘Dog of the Match’ submitted by a Tottenham Hotspaw member - on the big screens and in the programme on every home match day. In 2023, All Dogs Matter rescued and rehomed 331 dogs with new owners.

Ira Moss, General Manager and Founder, All Dogs Matter, said: “We're so excited to partner with Tottenham Hotspur for Steps with Pets. We can't wait to walk alongside you, with our favourite breed - rescue!”

Steps with Pets is supported by the Club’s Official Pet Food Partner, Frontier Pets - a purpose-driven leader in sustainable pet nutrition, dedicated to revolutionising the pet food industry through responsible sourcing practices and a deep commitment to healthier pets and a healthier planet.

Walk15 is a global app that motivates millions of people and their pets to move more, connect through a social walking community, and earn rewards with every step.

Vlada Musvydaite-Vilciauske, Founder and CEO of Walk15, said: “In our family, we have two Labradors - our love for the dogs inspired us to create a digital space where dog lovers could connect, move together, and make a difference. We developed a feature that brings together well-being and time with your dog, uniting a global pet-loving community. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine our first global dog-walking challenge would be delivered with Tottenham Hotspur. We’re incredibly proud to power 'Steps with Pets' and to see so many people walking with purpose.”

Under-21s score five to win opener at Sunderland - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

Our Under-21s kicked off the new Premier League 2 season with victory in an eight-goal thriller at Sunderland on Monday night.

Two goals from Oliver Irow and a further strike from Dante Cassanova had us 3-0 up inside 25 minutes as we capitalised on the hosts’ early frailties at the back to surge into an advantageous position, but Sunderland didn’t lay down and kept coming back at us, Trey Ogunsuyi bagging a hat-trick as our lead was reduced to 3-1 and then 4-3 after Luca Williams-Barnett’s goal early in the second period had extended our side of the scoreline.

In truth, both sides could have netted more in a rip-roaring contest but while the hosts found themselves denied by our defence and the offside flag on numerous occasions, we maintained our composure and finally killed the game off through substitute Rio Kyerematen’s fine strike into the bottom corner with five minutes of normal time remaining.

Goalkeeper Luca Gunter and defender Pele Arganese-McDermott made key interventions in the closing stages to prevent any late rally from the hosts, who finished with 10 men following a second yellow card shown to Jaydon Jones deep into stoppage time. The final whistle moments later brought the curtain down on an entertaining, deserved 5-3 win, albeit one that could and perhaps should have been secured earlier in the night.

Coach Wayne Burnett named a young side at Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground with four Under-18s players in the starting line-up, including two 16-year-olds in Williams-Barnett and Jun’ai Byfield and two 17-year-olds in Malachi Hardy and Tynan Thompson. A fifth youth team starlet, 17-year-old Reiss Elliott-Parris, was a lively influence off the bench in the last quarter-of-an-hour as all put in impressive shifts at this level.

Williams-Barnett flashed an early shot across goal and wide but it didn’t take long for us to hit the front, Irow turning home Thompson’s low cross from the left in the middle of the box after 10 minutes before doubling his tally from the spot three minutes later after Callum Olusesi was brought down by goalkeeper Isaac Allan. We kept forcing Sunderland into mistakes at the back with our high press and on 25 minutes it was 3-0 as skipper Reiss Russell-Denny pulled down a high ball in the box with a great touch before setting up Cassanova to drill home through a crowd of bodies.

The Black Cats started to get forward more as the first half went on and kept the impressive Luca Gunter busy for the remainder of the game, Jack Whittaker and Ben Middlemas testing him before Ogunsuyi latched onto a precise forward pass from Ian Poveda to get his side off the mark three minutes before the break.

Allan denied Thompson and Williams-Barnett shortly afterwards but was beaten by the latter 11 minutes into the second half as the youngster deftly knocked Yusuf Akhamrich’s right-sided cross inside the near post. The home side wouldn’t relent, though, and Gunter made a superb flying save away to his left to deny Ogunsuyi, but the striker did manage to find the net again on 62 minutes after he caught Byfield in possession and blasted home one-on-one with the keeper.

Sunderland were evidently frustrated at the sheer amount of times their attackers were flagged offside as our defence held their line diligently but after Akhamrich’s deflected low shot hit the base of the far post at the other end, the Black Cats broke through again, making it 4-3 in the 77th minute when Ogunsuyi cut in from the right and finished well on his left foot.

Game on… until Russell-Denny outfoxed the Sunderland defence with a clever low free-kick to find Black, who in turn thumped a superb shot low into the net to register our fifth goal with 85 minutes on the watch. That proved to be enough, although with eight additional minutes going up on the board, Sunderland had a couple of stoppage-time attempts, our substitute centre-half Arganese-McDermott making an incredible last-ditch block in front of goal to send Ogunsuyi’s swiped effort creeping just wide. Jones was then given his marching orders to add to the hosts’ woes as we secured three hard-earned points to begin 2025/26.

‘Overall, you have to be pleased’

Coach Wayne was impressed with the team’s performance in the first 45 minutes but felt the second-half display saw a drop in intensity: “I thought we played very well in the first half, created some really good chances and were in control of the game, but the second half wasn’t quite at the same intensity and we conceded some goals unnecessarily,” he said. “Overall, to come away, win and score five goals, you have to be pleased. There were some good individual performances and we were good as a collective, we’re just disappointed that we’ve conceded three goals.”

Wayne praised the Under-18s players in the side for the way they made an impact on the game: “I thought they acquitted themselves excellently,” he said. “They showed real intent, they played with energy, enthusiasm and they certainly had an influence and an impact on the game. For some of those players, it’s the first competitive Under-21s game that they’ve played and it’s a different type of game – it’s quicker, physical, they’re playing under the lights so there’s an element of pressure there for them, but I felt they acquitted themselves superbly and I was really pleased at how well they performed.”

Frank delighted with long-term deal for 'very important' Romero

Frank delighted with long-term deal for 'very important' Romero - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

"Of course, extremely happy," said Thomas. "He's a very important player for us, just been named captain so that speaks for itself.

"For me, he's one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League and, to have him locked down long-term, every fan, me, staff, should be extremely happy.

"It also shows he's committed to the journey we're on and the future and the bits we're building together. Very happy."

Thomas’ high regard for the 28-year-old is nothing new. The former Brentford boss was an admirer of his abilities when they previously crossed paths – Cuti even scored against his Bees’ side in August, 2023 – and that has only been enhanced since working together here in north London.

"I always thought he was one of the better centre-backs," he added. "Then you realise that when you get to work with him closely for the past six weeks, you get to know the person a little bit and also clearly his strength and development areas.

"What he can bring on the ball: he's extremely composed, finds the right passes, his aggression in duels and commitment and willingness to win for the team, is defending in the box is extremely good and then he's also a set piece threat."

With the Argentine named as our new skipper in the build-up to the UEFA Super Cup last Wednesday, Thomas revealed that our number 17 had every desire to wear the armband this term and, despite being new to the captaincy, has no doubt he will flourish with the added responsibility to drive the team forwards and take his leadership to the ‘next level’ in his fifth season in Lilywhite.

"He will thrive under this captaincy," our Head Coach continued.

"No doubt it was something he was hoping to be and wanted to be. When you have that approach, normally people take another step up and really want to go to the next level in terms of leadership. I have no doubt he will drive the team and players and help in any way he can.

"There's more responsibility and we also need to remember he's a young leader so he will learn and be even better."

Cuti on new deal: “For me, this a fantastic decision... I love this club” - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

What a few days for Cuti Romero.

Named captain by Thomas Frank last Wednesday, Cuti led us to within minutes of UEFA Super Cup glory against PSG in Udine on Thursday, led the team out alongside his son at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday and to a 3-0 victory against Burnley and has now put pen to paper on a new, long-term deal.

A fans’ favourite now into his fifth season at Spurs, the feeling is clearly mutual as Cuti described his emotions after signing his new deal.

“Honestly, the last two weeks, first captain, now a new contract with the Club, I’m very, very happy. For me, it’s a fantastic decision. Now we start together again. I’m very happy at the club. For me, this club is the best in the world. For this, I extend my contract.”

Asked what makes the club so special, he said: “The people here, inside, a top manager, I’m very happy with the club. My children were born here. My family is very happy here. It was special for me to walk onto the pitch with my son (against Burnley on Saturday). I love football, I love this club. It was special for me to be with him.”

Asked for a message for the fans, Cuti added: “Thanks for your support every day, every match, for me it’s important, also for the team. Again, for me, the most important thing is to stay all together. Sometimes in football, good moments, bad moments, the most important thing is to stay together. Why not win again this season?”

New deal for Cristian Romero - Tottenham Hotspur
Description

We are delighted to announce that Cristian Romero has signed a new, long-term contract with the Club.

Having initially joined the Club on a season-long loan from Serie A side Atalanta in August, 2021, the Argentina international signed permanently the following year.

Named captain by Thomas Frank ahead of the UEFA Super Cup earlier this month, the 27-year-old has made a total of 126 appearances in our colours to date, scoring eight times.

Cristian arrived as the ‘Best Defender’ in Serie A in 2020/21 and helped us to secure a return to the UEFA Champions League in his debut season with the Club, as we enjoyed a sensational second half of the campaign.

A commanding central defender, he was appointed vice-captain alongside James Maddison in August, 2023, and an impressive campaign saw him make 33 Premier League starts, scoring on five occasions. He was also shortlisted for the Premier League’s Player of the Month award for October, 2023.

Captain for the final four matches of our run to European glory last term, ‘Cuti’ played a vital role in our UEFA Europa League success and claimed the competition’s Player of the Season award. He was named Player of the Match in the Final while he also earned a place in the 2024/25 UEFA Europa League Team of the Season alongside team-mates Guglielmo Vicario, Pedro Porro, and Dominic Solanke.

At international level, he made his senior debut for Argentina in a World Cup qualifier against Chile in June, 2021, and now has 44 caps to his name for La Albiceleste, scoring three times.

Cristian has enjoyed huge success with Argentina, helping his country to the 2021 and 2024 Copa America titles, the CONMEBOL-UEFA Cup of Champions and, most notably, World Cup glory at Qatar 2022.

Wayne Burnett’s side concluded pre-season with a narrow defeat at Enfield Town earlier this month, which came off the back of a useful training camp in the Algarve.
