Ryan Mason must surely regret not signing Spurs ace for West Brom as unreal statistic emerges
It’s been an indifferent start to the season for Ryan Mason and West Brom. Given the success of one Tottenham Hotspur youngster out on loan right now, the former Spurs coach probably wishes he had made the move to sign him.
When Ryan Mason was appointed as the new West Brom manager this summer, everyone expected him to use his Spurs connections in the transfer market.
Despite links to the likes of Mikey Moore and Will Lankshear, Mason chose to ignore his Tottenham contact book. He did sign former Chelsea star Alfie Gilchrist, though.
While many of West Brom’s summer signings are impressive and should come good for Mason, we can’t help but feel that he missed a trick on one Spurs boy.
Luka Vuskovic registers incredible statistic at HSV
Spurs made the decision to send young Croatian defender Luka Vuskovic out on loan this season, with Hamburger SV the lucky team to nab the big talent.
He’s made a great start to life in Germany, too. Vuskovic scored his first goal of the season last week, and then went on to break an incredible record over the weekend.
In the 0-0 draw with Union Berlin on Sunday, Vuskovic became the first player to win 18 aerial duels in a single match across Europe’s top five leagues over the last five seasons.
Just let that sink in. The 18-year-old centre-half was so dominant in the air that no single player — not even Virgil van Dijk, or Gabriel, or Alessandro Bastoni — has managed such a feat since 2020.
Given West Brom’s weak links in the defensive line, like George Campbell, it’s safe to say having the towering teenager Vuskovic would have been pretty handy right now.
I actually suggested West Brom should sign Vuskovic way back in June. Clearly, Ryan Mason didn’t heed my advice, and now the world is finding out how good the Spurs youngster is.
Ryan Mason needs West Brom to be more dominant and clinical
West Brom haven’t been bad this season. But, they haven’t set the world alight, either. They’re now without a win in three games, losing two of those against Derby County and Middlesbrough.
One thing that has become abundantly clear is that West Brom are simply not controlling games, and are not putting teams to the sword. That rather blunt attack needs to be resolved, but the Baggies defence is also conceding soft goals, too.
All in all, Mason has made a solid start, but he needs more across the board if he is to succeed this season. At the moment, it’s hard to imagine West Brom really being in the promotion mix.
