Tottenham could raid Napoli for their talented attacking midfielder.
Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed the signing of Marcos Senesi on Wednesday afternoon, as the former Bournemouth man becomes the club’s second summer acquisition.
Senesi brings Premier League experience and leadership qualities to a Spurs side as they look to battle for domestic trophies next season after two successive 17th-place finishes. The Argentine has become the second defensive addition to Roberto De Zerbi’s roster after Andy Robertson’s capture as a free agent was announced last week.
The Lilywhites are wary that they need to make additions to their attacking unit after their problems of creating chances and scoring goals were well-documented this past season. Recent reports suggest Tottenham are interested in signing Napoli playmaker Antonio Vergara. They are monitoring the 23-year-old’s situation after his breakout season in Naples.
Agent opens up on Antonio Vergara’s future at Napoli amid Tottenham interest
Antonio Vergara impressed during a loan spell at Serie B side Reggiana in 2024/25 before making 19 appearances for Napoli in all competitions this past season. Napoli are believed to be open to offers in the region of £26 million, having initially deemed the Italian attacker ‘untouchable’.
Spurs aren’t the only club keeping tabs on Vergara; Como appear to be pushing ahead with their own move for the Italian talent, as coach Cesc Fabregas aims to strengthen his squad with some homegrown players ahead of his side’s exciting Champions League campaign.
Now, Mario Giufreddi, Vergara’s agent, has opened up speculation surrounding his client’s future. He has clarified that the player’s desire won’t matter as the final call will be taken by the club.
“We need to understand the club’s thinking: if they prefer to sell him for €25-€30m, we won’t stay,” Mario Giufreddi said to Radio CRC (h/t Sportmediaset).
“But it’s not Vergara’s choice, nor his agent’s: it will be Napoli’s decision.”
Vergara’s future in Naples not yet decided
Max Allegri, who was sacked by AC Milan earlier this month, is yet to be formally appointed as the new Napoli boss. What Allegri’s plans at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona remain unknown, which has put Vergara’s future at the club in limbo.
Securing the attacking midfielder’s signature will not require an astronomical financial arrangement. He is valued at around €26m, and for De Zerbi to boost his squad’s depth, the Italian must push Spurs to make such an investment. Vergara, who contributed to three goals and four assists in his breakthrough Napoli season, could flourish in De Zerbi’s possession-based system in N17.
