The aftermath of Ange Postecoglou’s two-season tenure at Tottenham is beginning to unfold, with certain players taking the opportunity to praise the Australian in public, while others are simply readying themselves for the new season. Cuti Romero is a player who already has silverware to his name, and one gets the impression that the Argentinian is now set to pursue more, and perhaps not in the Lilywhite.

Speaking to Gastón Edul on his TV show ‘Los Edu’, the Spurs vice-captain dropped the most conclusive bombshell yet in respect to the defender’s future. Here, via the Evening Standard, are the fateful words.

“It depends on a lot of things. We’ll see after the championship is over. The truth is, I haven’t spoken to my agent yet, but I’m open to anything. My goal is always to grow and go to new places to continue developing.

I’d love to play La Liga. I’d love to, honestly.”

Our view

It comes as little surprise that Cuti wants out.

On his day, he’s a fabulous player, but last season he barely featured, and the swashbuckling tackles that caught our eye in his early games became a feature of the past. This is possibly his third public comment after Ange’s departure, and the second could not have been timed more poorly. It came on the heels of Thomas Frank’s appointment.

It is the line about ‘go to new places’ that will unsettle the Tottenham board, as they have built a significant operation for world-class footballers and just delivered European silverware. Surely there is room for any player to ‘continue developing’ in N17.

Effectively, the mention of La Liga means that Cuti has his eyes firmly on arguably one of football’s most prestigious destinations, Atlético Madrid, and Diego Simeone recently stated, “Do I want Cuti Romero? Obviously!”

For my money, Tottenham has much restructuring ahead of them, and a fat fee for the Argentinian would go some way to aiding the cash lost by Postecoglou’s decision not to focus on the bread and butter of the Premier League.
