Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after picking up a hamstring injury in the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur on Tuesday night.
The 28-year-old midfielder had only just returned from a four-game absence due to an ankle injury. He started successive matches against Brentford and Spurs in the space of four days and went down injured in the closing stages of the latter.
On Friday morning, Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe said: “With Bruno, we're awaiting the full extent of the hamstring injury.”
Bruno Guimaraes injury bombshell
And by Friday evening, the full extent was leaked in the Brazilian media with ESPN Brazil claiming Guimaraes could be out for up to 10 weeks.
The club and player are hopeful he will be back sooner than that though it is likely he will miss the next eight matches for Newcastle, including the Tyne-Wear derby against Sunderland, plus any potential further Champions League or FA Cup games. He has also been ruled out of Brazil’s March international break fixtures against France and Croatia.
Such an absence comes as a major blow to Newcastle, who have never won a Premier League match without Guimaraes since he made his debut for the club.
Football influencer Fabrizio Romano claimed Guimaraes could soon travel to Brazil for further tests having been ruled out for eight to 10 weeks.
“Bruno Guimarães suffer 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐦𝐮𝐬𝐜𝐥𝐞 𝐢𝐧𝐣𝐮𝐫𝐲 as he’ll be out for weeks,” Romano wrote. “Current expectation is for 𝟖/𝟏𝟎 𝐰𝐞𝐞𝐤𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 — Newcastle and Seleção staff are in contact to assess his recovery.
“Bruno could travel to Brazil soon for further tests with his presence for March games already ruled out. He’ll be 𝟏𝟎𝟎% 𝐑𝐄𝐀𝐃𝐘 𝐅𝐎𝐑 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐖𝐎𝐑𝐋𝐃 𝐂𝐔𝐏.”

Bruno Guimaraes frustration
After suffering the injury on Tuesday, Guimaraes took to social media after the match to write: “ Very happy with the win! This looks much more like what we’re capable of doing. Great character from the team. Once again, I hope it’s nothing too serious and that he can be back soon.”
The news of Guimaraes’ injury also sparked questions as to why the midfielder was allowed to remain on the pitch as long as he did.
But Howe addressed those questions ahead of the trip to Aston Villa on Saturday in the FA Cup.
“Yeah, possibly,” Howe said. “I think with Bruno the other night, I don't think there was any pre-injury. Obviously, at that stage of the game, he was getting fatigued.
“Maybe on a normal situation with a full bench, we would maybe have taken him off before that moment. But we didn't. We were run out of midfielders, so he stayed on the pitch and unfortunately got injured.”
