West Ham host top of the table Arsenal this afternoon in what is a huge match for both sides, Tottenham Hotspur, and the whole of English football.
The pressure is really on both sides; the Gunners need to win to keep their spot at the top of the table, while West Ham simply have to win to win to have a chance of staying in the Premier League.
Not only is the pressure on the Hammers for that, but the pressure is also coming from fans of almost every club but Arsenal and Tottenham to ‘save football.’
A West Ham win today would go a long way towards relegating Tottenham Hotspur and stopping Arsenal from lifting their first Premier League title for over twenty years.
But what are the chances of this happening? Very low.
I can’t imagine many West Ham fans are full of hope anymore, given that we lost to Brentford in the way we did in what was a must-win game, with Spurs winning their second match in a row was horrific.
To lose 3-0 and not even play that badly, we hit the woodwork on three occasions, were unlucky with refereeing decisions, and had a goal disallowed, which would have made it 1-1 just minutes after conceding.
That game really would have sucked a lot of hope out of West Ham fans when it comes to survival. Not only that, but the Gunners also look like they’re back to their best. They played Fulham off the park in their last League match, and they just confirmed their spot in the Champions League final with a win over Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid.
Yes, we’ve beaten Arsenal when the pressure is on them in the last couple of seasons, but we can’t seem to get a result against them at London Stadium. They’re in great form, and the pressure is on us.
I’m really not confident going into the game this afternoon, but if we get the stadium rocking, give the players confidence, get the game plan right then we might have a chance to save ourselves, and to ‘save football.’
