This Saturday, Chelsea FC will face off London Rivals, Tottenham Hotspur at the Accor Stadium, Sydney. The two fierce rivals will face off in the Sydney Super Cup ahead of the new Premier League campaign which kicks off on the 21st of August.
Chelsea won at the Accor Stadium earlier this week as the Blues dismantled Western Sydney Wanderers in an enthralling 6-4 victory over the Australian side and will look to replicate a similar outcome over their English counterparts.
Meanwhile, Spurs haven’t had the same success as Chelsea since arriving in Sydney. Tottenham were held to a 1-1 draw against Sydney FC despite fielding a relatively strong starting XI.
Chelsea
Chelsea ended the 25/26 season on a low, finishing in 10th place and missing out entirely on European football. However, it’s fair to say that the Blues lacked stability last season and saw a boggling 4 managers appointed at Stamford Bridge in only five months.
Club Changes
The last of which happened to be the highly successful gaffer, Xabi Alonso. The former Real Madrid and invincible Leverkusen manager has already made some significant changes around the club with key players both arriving and departing.
It’s evident that Alonso feels Chelsea have lacked experience in recent seasons with our average squad age being only 23 according to Opta. Xabi has looked to tackle this with the signings of Premier League veterans in Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck alongside flourishing Premier League starlets in Morgan Rogers and Maxence Lacroix.
However, Chelsea have lost some serious talent and depth in the sales of Marc Cucurella, Andrey Santos and Alejandro Garnacho but with plentiful signings in Defensive, Midfield and Wide areas, the Blues have seemed to patch up any holes left by the trio.
Ones to watch
Whilst the obvious selections would include top scorer, João Pedro and the powerhouses that are Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo, who else has impressed so far this season?
Jamie Gittens
The English winger has had a statement pre-season campaign so far, picking up three goals in three games and producing all round positive play. He now looks like he may be living up to his hefty £50 million price tag.
Dastan Satpaev
The Kazakhstan International had a magnificent Chelsea debut last time out as the 17 year old rattled home a beautiful finish early in the game to seize Chelsea an early lead. Dastan has plentiful experience at the top level with four goals and one assist in twelve Champions League appearances in 2025 as well as eight international caps, netting once in that period!
Tottenham
It’s fair to say that Spurs have had a couple of seasons to forget, with consecutive 17th place finishes and found themselves in a serious relegation battle late into the season!
Club Changes
Spurs are another club who have seriously lacked managerial stability over the last year with the appointment of three managers in only two months! Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor failed to get Tottenham up and running and it was down to Roberto De Zerbi to dig the club out of the relegation zone.
He was successful in his endeavours and now, the future looks to be bright! The signings of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, Jan Paul Van Hecke, Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes and Martin Dubravka will certainly strengthen the side and will join up with a squad of some serious potential.
Ones to Watch
Whilst star players such as Pedro Porro and Mickey Van De Ven are likely to stand out, some of the Club’s newest signings have shone so far this pre-season.
Mateus Fernandes
The Portuguese midfielder has been a standout player for Spurs this pre-season and scored only five minutes into his club debut against MK Dons and has since featured for Spurs off the bench on their tour of Australia.
Manor Solomon
Solomon has stood out this pre-season for Spurs and even picked up a Man Of The Match award in Tottenham’s game against Auckland FC. He created the most chances, had the most touches in the opposition box and completed the most dribbles on his second debut for the club. Spurs loaned the Israel International out for the last two years and he spent time playing across the Champions League, Conference League, LaLiga and Serie A with Fiorentina, Villarreal and Leeds.
What to expect from the game?
Reflecting on the two club’s respective 25/26 league seasons, Chelsea would sit as obvious favourites, backed by a top manager and many strong new signings. However, De Zerbi got the engine running at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on the back end of last season and with many new signings to support him, Spurs are certain to give Chelsea a game!
