Tottenham Hotspur recorded a memorable 2-0 win over Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, but the London derby sparked into life in the second half as several refereeing decisions left plenty to discuss.
The Sky Sports Ref Watch panel debated whether referee Chris Kavanagh made the right calls, with Cole Palmer’s red card and Micky van de Ven’s tackle on Moises Caicedo among the main talking points.
Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher joined ex-Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood and former striker Jay Bothroyd to assess the incidents on Monday morning.
Ref Watch Panel Debate Chelsea vs Tottenham Decisions
The Game’s Flashpoints
As the game moved into the final 20 minutes, Van de Ven flew into a tackle on Caicedo as Chelsea attempted to launch a counterattack. The ball broke loose before Mateus Fernandes deliberately handled it while on the ground to stop Palmer advancing with possession.
Palmer reacted by barging Fernandes to the floor, sparking a confrontation between players from both sides. Kavanagh booked Van de Ven, Fernandes, and Palmer for their involvement in the incident.
Spurs took the lead shortly afterwards when Chelsea goalkeeper Mike Penders diverted a corner into his own goal. Three minutes later, Palmer was shown a second yellow card for a tackle on former Chelsea captain Conor Gallagher.
Mathys Tel sealed a memorable Spurs win three minutes from time with a brilliant individual run and finish, but the match also featured several decisions that sparked debate among fans and the Ref Watch panel.
Should Palmer Have Been Sent Off Earlier?
Palmer’s reaction to Fernandes divided the panel, with Gallagher backing Kavanagh’s decision to show a yellow card rather than a straight red.
The former referee kept his assessment brief, saying: “I back the ref because it is so open to debate.”
Bothroyd felt Fernandes had provoked Palmer into reacting, but argued that the Tottenham midfielder had played the situation well. However, he also questioned whether similar incidents should result in red cards, given previous decisions involving players putting their heads into opponents’ faces.
Sherwood felt a red card may have been justified, stating: “If you’re going to send someone off for putting their head into someone’s nose, then I think it could be [a red card]. Palmer has knocked him over.”
While Gallagher supported the on-field decision, the panel’s divided reaction showed just how contentious the incident was.
Palmer’s subsequent dismissal meant the initial booking did not ultimately lead to him remaining on the pitch for the full match, although he could still have influenced proceedings before his second yellow card.
Did Palmer Deserve His Second Yellow Card?
Palmer’s late challenge on Gallagher sparked another debate, with Gallagher and Sherwood agreeing with Kavanagh’s decision to send the Chelsea forward off.
Gallagher questioned Palmer’s judgement given that he was already on a yellow card: “Why would you make a tackle like that if you’re on a yellow card? He doesn’t get the ball, he’s a long way from it, his studs land on Gallagher’s ankle.”
Sherwood also believed Palmer deserved his second yellow card, pointing out that he knew where Gallagher was before making contact. He criticised what he saw as petulance in the Chelsea player’s play.
Bothroyd disagreed, arguing that Palmer had attempted to withdraw his foot after mistiming the challenge. He suggested Gallagher’s sliding movement left Palmer with little opportunity to avoid contact.
Bothroyd said: “I don’t think it’s a yellow. Palmer takes his foot back. He thinks he can get there; he’s mis-timed it. Gallagher has slid in and I don’t know where Palmer can put his foot.”
It was another split decision among the pundits. However, given the earlier incident involving Fernandes, some would argue Palmer was fortunate to have remained on the pitch long enough to receive a second yellow card.
Was Van de Ven Fortunate to Escape a Red Card?
Van de Ven’s initial challenge on Caicedo was another talking point, with Bothroyd believing the Spurs defender was lucky to stay on the pitch.
Bothroyd argued: “If Caicedo does not jump out the way and hurdle him, that is a straight red card all day long.”
Sherwood also questioned the challenge, referencing Van de Ven’s tackle on Liverpool forward Alexander Isak last season, which left the Swede with a broken leg. Sherwood described the challenge as reckless and argued that the Spurs defender should be more careful with tackles of that nature.
Gallagher disagreed with the suggestion that the challenge warranted a red card, warning against being too quick to dismiss players for tackles of this kind.
The former referee said: “I do not think it was a red card, you have to be very, very careful what you start chucking red cards about for.”
Gallagher also suggested that stopping play immediately and booking Van de Ven could have prevented the confrontation between Palmer and Fernandes that followed.
The Last Word on Chelsea vs Tottenham
The panel’s differing opinions show how decisions can split opinion among those watching and how tough it can be to reach a consensus on contentious incidents. With a former referee, manager and player on the panel, each offered a different perspective on how Kavanagh handled the difficult decisions.
Tottenham will be more concerned with recording just their second win at Stamford Bridge in 36 years and will likely be content with the decisions Kavanagh made under the west London lights, with Palmer eventually seeing red despite some arguing he should have been dismissed earlier.
For Chelsea, questions will once again be asked about their discipline, having received their ninth Premier League red card since the start of 2025/26. They will also be looking to bounce back from a rare but disappointing defeat to their London rivals.
