Cristian Romero has expressed his joy at signing a new contract with Tottenham Hotspur, referring to the North London side as the ‘best club in the world’
Romero has attracted plenty of interest from sides in Spain this summer, and it was even claimed at the start of the summer that the Tottenham defender was keen on joining Atletico Madrid.
However, Spurs managed to see off advances from the La Liga side, and the defender’s commitment to the club became clear when Thomas Frank named him the new captain following the departure of Heung-min Son.
On Monday, in a huge development, it emerged that Romero had put pen to paper on a new four-year deal with Tottenham.
Cristian Romero sends message to Tottenham fans after signing contract
The new Tottenham captain has now admitted that he is very happy at N17 and expressed his pride at being given the captain’s armband.
Romero told the official Spurs channel: “I’m very happy here in the club. For me, this club is the best in the world. The last two weeks, first becoming captain and now signing the contract with the club. For me, it’s a fantastic decision.
“My message to the fans is thank you for your amazing support every day and every match. For me, and it’s important also for the team.”

On Saturday, in his first home game as captain, Romero took his son Valentino onto the pitch as his mascot, and he admitted that it was a special moment for him.
The centre-back said: “Going on to the pitch with my son [on Saturday], it’s special for me. First time as captain, and yeah, it is incredible for me. I love football, I love this club. It’s special for me to go to the pitch with him.”
Romero is targeting another trophy this season
The Argentine is no stranger to winning silverware, and played an important part in Tottenham’s Europa League win, being adjudged the Man of the Match in the final against Manchester United.
Now that Tottenham have got a taste of success, Cristian Romero insisted that they are hungry for more and have their eyes on winning a trophy again this campaign.
He added: “After winning the Europa League, it’s like a special season now. In football, sometimes there are good moments, bad moments. The most important thing for me is to stay all together. We want to win. Maybe, why not again this season? Another trophy with the club is important for everyone.”
