Aston Villa reportedly enquired to sign Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Lucas Bergvall during the recent transfer window.
Unai Emery, responding to an injury crisis in the centre of the park, was in the market for new players to bolster his midfield. In the end, Villa went on to re-sign Douglas Luiz on loan from Juventus, but plenty of other options were explored.
Although Villa had very little financial muscle to flex due to struggles adhering to the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR), there was a little more flexibility to do loan-to-buy deals. That approach was taken as Villa attempted to sign Conor Gallagher from Atletico Madrid before his move to Spurs, for example.
Aston Villa ‘made contact’ to sign Spurs starlet
As it turns out, one option Villa strongly considered in midfield was Spurs wonderkid Bergvall. The Athletic reports Tottenham ‘rebuffed enquiries’ from several Premier League clubs during the winter, with Villa and Chelsea both making ‘direct contact’ to try and lure Bergvall to either Villa Park or Stamford Bridge.
Conversations were held about whether or not a deal could be done for Bergvall, however Spurs resisted, insisting the Sweden international was not for sale. At the moment, Bergvall is sidelined with an ankle injury, but that won’t stop speculation from building ahead of the summer months.
The Athletic’s report suggests Bergvall’s future is up in the air following the enquiries from Villa and Chelsea. Spurs fans, who named Bergvall their Player of the Season in 2024/25 following the UEFA Europa League triumph under Ange Postecoglou, will be hoping the midfielder stays put.
Since signing from Djurgarden in 2024, Bergvall has racked up 71 appearances for Spurs. In that period, the six-time Sweden international has scored two goals and provided eight assists. Those aren’t numbers that set the world alight, but that’s not his role. Instead, Bergvall thrives on breaking up the play and dictating the tempo in the early stages of attacks.
