Tottenham are in pole position to sign Liverpool defender Andy Robertson if they retain their Premier League status, according to David Ornstein.

Spurs were one of the sides showing an interest in signing Robertson during the previous January transfer window, before Liverpool opted against allowing him to depart.

With the Scottish international out of contract in the summer, Robertson will be able to sign for a new club for free, and Liverpool have now confirmed that he won't be extending his stay on Merseyside.

Robertson will now have his pick of a host of clubs later this year, as he searches for a new challenge at the age of 32.

It remains to be seen where Robertson will end up, but one of Liverpool's Premier League rivals are already leading the race to secure his signature.

Tottenham Plotting Robertson Move

According to The Athletic's Ornstein, Tottenham are in pole position to land Robertson from Liverpool in the summer transfer window, after it was confirmed that he would be leaving Anfield on a free.

Ornstein confirms that Tottenham held talks over signing Robertson during the winter window, but Liverpool were unwilling to allow him to depart in the middle of the season.

Instead, Robertson will leave for nothing later this year, and Spurs could secure themselves a bargain if they remain in the Premier League.

Robertson Could be Smart Addition for Tottenham

Tottenham have centered a lot of their recruitment on signing up-and-coming talent from around the world over the last few years, spending significantly on bringing in young players.

Adding some experience would be a smart move, and it makes perfect sense to bring Robertson in when he's available on a free transfer in the summer.

Robertson is still capable of playing at the highest level, while he could also be the perfect mentor for young left-back Souza, who was brought to the club in the January window.

It would be a positive addition for Spurs, but they need to retain their Premier League status first.
