Harry Kane scored his sixth World Cup goal as England beat Mexico 3-2, with Donald Trump hailing the England captain as a "great player" after his match-winning penalty at the Estadio Azteca

Donald Trump has praised Harry Kane as a "great player" following the England captain's crucial role in guiding Thomas Tuchel's team into the World Cup quarter-finals.

Former Tottenham striker Kane netted a second-half penalty during England's 3-2 victory over Mexico at Estadio Azteca, taking his tournament tally to six goals.

The Bayern Munich forward's display caught the attention of the White House, with the American president posting on social media: "Harry Kane of England is a GREAT player."

It's obviously no surprise to Tottenham fans, though, with Kane becoming a superstar in north London before sealing a move to German giants Bayern Munich - and he is now shining on the global stage with the Three Lions.

Kane's 60th-minute spot-kick proved to be the match-winner after Jude Bellingham had struck twice within 98 seconds before the interval.

Julian Quinones pulled one back before half-time and Raul Jimenez converted from the penalty spot to make it 3-2, but England secured a quarter-final clash with Norway despite Jarell Quansah's dismissal after 54 minutes.

Kane, England's all-time leading World Cup marksman, sits just one goal behind Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi in the Golden Boot standings.

England's players celebrated by joining supporters in a rousing chorus of 'Wonderwall', the Oasis anthem which has soundtracked their World Cup campaign.

Kane had lost his voice following the match and could barely speak during a post-match BBC interview, managing only: "Unbelievable support. Speechless.

"My voice is gone. I've just been singing there. I can't really talk."

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher posted on X: "It's hard work that singing Harry Kane cmon ENGLAND cmon WONDERWALL."

Over the course of the 2026 World Cup the rock band’s hit 1995 track has become an unofficial anthem with the men’s team lining up to sing it back to fans.

Sir David Beckham, Chicken Shop Date star Amelia Dimoldenberg and TV personality Jamie Laing also joined in on the celebrations and showed their support for the men’s national team online.

Sir David posted a string of Instagram stories and said: “Now that’s a performance wow. There was no other way of winning this game other than that. Absolutely brilliant.”

He also praised the “brilliant” England manager, Thomas Tuchel, and goalkeeper, Jordan Pickford, who said his performance was “absolutely nothing other than perfection”.

“Huge team performance. A night to be proud of each and everyone of the squad,” he said.

Dimoldenberg said she “can’t cope” in a video shared online with the caption “we did it!”

Meanwhile former Made In Chelsea star, Laing, said: “It’s coming home baby!”

EastEnders actor Ross Kemp also posted a video on his Instagram account and said: “That is without a doubt the best England performance I think I’ve ever seen.

“That is without a doubt true English spirit.”
