Tottenham have some big decisions to make during their squad rebuild under Roberto De Zerbi.
Tottenham Hotspur are expected to make some big moves in the summer to continue their squad rebuild.
Having struggled for invention, dynamism and goals from midfield, Spurs are keen on a playmaker as a long-term replacement for the crocked James Maddison. The ACL injury to Maddison in the pre-season tour of Asia last year left the squad without a real creative force throughout the past campaign.
The Lilywhites need a creative midfielder who can pick up smart positions across the pitch, carry the ball forward and make an impact in the final third. Recent reports suggest that the North Londoners are interested in signing Napoli man Antonio Vergara. They have been closely monitoring the Italian midfielder’s performances in recent months.
Fabrizio Romano provides the latest update on Tottenham Hotspur’s move to sign Antonio Vergara
Antonio Vergara broke into the first-team squad this past campaign, registering three goals and four assists in 19 appearances in all competitions. He was mainly used off the bench by coach Antonio Conte, who left Napoli after the campaign ended.
The ex-Italian Under-19 international has caught the attention of the Tottenham chiefs. However, in a fresh update on the move, reputed journalist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that there are no concrete talks ongoing between Spurs and Napoli.
“It does not turn out that Napoli are in concrete or advanced negotiations to sell Vergara, at least until now,” Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel.
“It does not occur to us that there is a dialogue with Tottenham.”
Tottenham must test Napoli’s resolve for Antonio Vergara
Romano has given the latest update on Tottenham’s interest in Vergara. At this moment, there is no dialogue between them and Napoli for the 23-year-old, although a potential move to White Hart Lane hasn’t been ruled out.
Max Allegri, who was recently sacked by AC Milan, is set to replace Conte as Napoli’s new boss. Vergara’s future in Naples will depend on how he fits into Allegri’s system and plans. If the Italian feels he has no immediate future at the club under Allegri, he might push to leave the former Serie A champions.
A move to Tottenham, in that regard, could be an ideal destination for Vergara. The Frattaminore-born talent will add a creative spark to De Zerbi’s side, whilst improving the squad depth. At just 23, he still has room to grow and could unlock his true potential under De Zerbi’s watchful eyes.
If Spurs can sign Vergara on favourable terms, it would be a clever, forward-thinking move that strengthens the squad without disrupting the long-term project.
