Tottenham have prioritised reinforcing their defensive unit after the woeful 2025/26 season.

Tottenham Hotspur are going to be in the market for a series of additions in the upcoming transfer window, after enduring a forgettable campaign.

With the summer transfer window looming, we examine what could be the North London club’s next piece of business after verbally agreeing deals with Andy Robertson and Marcos Senesi. It is clear by now that Tottenham have prioritised reinforcing their backline ahead of the 2026/27 campaign. The potential arrivals of Robertson and Senesi on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth, respectively, will fortify their defence.

However, it looks like Spurs want to add more bodies to their defensive roster amid the uncertain futures of Cristian Romero and Radu Dragusin. Recent reports suggest Tottenham are in the running for Bologna defender Jhon Lucumi. However, Sunderland have revived their interest in the Colombian international after missing out on his signature last summer.

Jhon Lucumi has finished another strong campaign with Bologna. The 27-year-old made 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring a goal. But, on the verge of entering the final year of his contract, he appears set to be cashed in by Bologna this summer.

Agent gives Tottenham hope in race for Jhon Lucumi

Now, Lucumi’s agent Simone Rondanini has admitted that his client is looking for a new challenge after four solid seasons at Bologna.

“Bologna is his home. As we know, there were already some significant opportunities last year, but ultimately, no agreement was reached. I believe the boy is now ready for a new challenge, so we’ll carefully analyse the market and see if the conditions are right for everyone this summer,” Simone Rondanini told TuttoMercatoWeb.

Lucumi has not agreed to a new deal with Bologna, and as his contract is expiring in 2027, several clubs across Europe have been put on red alert. Interest in the 26-year-old is steadily building, making him an increasingly tempting option on a possible cut-price deal.

From Tottenham’s perspective, the Colombian star has the qualities to improve De Zerbi’s squad. But, as Micky van de Ven wants to stay after the club achieved safety, and Senesi is set to join at the end of the month, Spurs would not require another left-footed centre-back. Being left-footed, Lucumi may not now be at the top of the Lilywhites’ wishlist.

Still, if Tottenham make a move for the Cali-born talent, then that would be as a potential replacement for Van de Ven. For now, Sunderland holds an edge over Spurs for Lucumi, owing to their Europa League qualification and previous interest.
