There are sure to be plenty of rumours around the futures of a number of Tottenham players in the build-up to the summer transfer window, given the nature of the season the Lilywhites have had and with so many things up in the air.
There is going to be major upheaval in N17, with a new co-sporting director to be employed before a new permanent manager is appointed. Then there are sure to be plenty of incomings and outgoings at the club, with Spurs struggling at the bottom of the Premier League table for the second consecutive season.
Club captain Cristian Romero has been linked with an exit from the club in previous transfer windows and has made no secret of his desire to play in La Liga one day.
Cristian Romero Release Clause Truth
The Argentinian World Cup winner has been with Spurs since 2021 and only signed a contract extension with the club last summer, after being named club captain, to be tied to the club until 2029.
That means Tottenham will hold all the cards when it comes to negotiating a deal to sell the centre-back this summer.
Both Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have been linked with a move for the 27-year-old in the past and reports have claimed that the defender has a special release clause that would allow him to move to one of the two Spanish giants, as well as Barcelona, if a fee of €60million was offered.
However, that is not the case, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, he said: "In the last 24 hours, I have received tonnes of questions about one of the reports about the defender and a special release clause in his contract at Tottenham.
"According to reports, there is a clause to let Cuti Romero go to Real Madrid, Barcelona or Atletico Madrid for €60million, this is what's been reported. My information is that Cuti Romero's contract does not include any sort of release clause. There is nothing on paper guaranteed about a release clause.
"During negotiations in summer 2025, in conversations it was discussed something like a gentleman's agreement if a top club from Spain, not England, from Spain arrives with a good amount of money, which was not specified, a good, realistic amount of money, Tottenham could consider letting Cuti Romero go. This was a verbal agreement and just remember this was when Daniel Levy was at the club and he is no longer at the club."
Tottenham Get Phonecalls About Romero Transfer
Romano also revealed that a number of clubs have "started calling" for Romero ahead of the summer transfer window and that it is a real possibility that he leaves north London this summer, no matter what division Tottenham find themselves in.
"Cuti is fully focused on keeping Tottenham in the Premier League, but on the other side, can he leave Tottenham in the summer? Yes," he said.
"It's a possibility, it's not guaranteed, but it's a possibility. Several top clubs have started calling for Cuti Romero, Atletico Madrid wanted him last summer and he has always been considered a super appreciated player internally and there are more clubs around Europe and not only Europe, so top clubs are aware of this possibility."
Romero is currently on international duty with Argnetina, with Tottenham not back in action in the Premier League again until April 12. they are one point and one place above the relegation zone with seven games to play.
