Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly agreed a club-record £85 million deal to sign a midfielder - and it’s not Sandro Tonali.

Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein have reported that West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes is set to join Spurs, with Manchester United missing out on the 21-year-old.

Fernandes joined West Ham from Southampton last summer in a deal worth in excess of £40million. Despite the Hammers suffering relegation from the Premier League last summer, they have managed to double their money with Spurs paying a significant sum.

On Tuesday, Fabrizio Romano tweeted: “BREAKING: Tottenham agree club record deal for Mateus Fernandes, HERE WE GO! Agreement in place at £85m fixed fee as West Ham accept the price they’ve always asked, 100% guaranteed — as @David_Ornstein reports. Man United will now focus on different targets in midfield.”

The agreement comes as Spurs have also been pushing to sign Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali for a similar fee. The North London club, who have finished 17th in successive Premier League seasons, saw a bid of around £80million rejected by Newcastle last month.

Tonali is understood to be open to joining Tottenham with the prospect of working alongside fellow Italian Roberto De Zerbi. Newcastle value the midfielder at around £100million.

But Tonali and Newcastle can only watch on as Spurs have smashed their club record and made Fernandes one of the most expensive midfielders in Premier League history. The belief is they will have to do that again this summer in order to land Tonali.

But with Manchester City and Arsenal also monitoring the situation, the Italy international’s next destination isn’t quite so clear-cut.
