Tottenham fans have become accustomed to surprising decisions this summer as Thomas Frank gets ready to make some more.
Even the nature of Frank’s appointment at Tottenham was surprising, with a lot of supporters shocked to see Ange Postecoglou sacked after winning the UEFA Europa League.
Frank has a lot of work to do to convince fans that he is the right man for the job.
And it looks as though the Dane is ready to make some bold decisions during pre-season, which will cause further shock in North London.
Frank could give forgotten Tottenham stars another chance
While Tottenham fans are not feeling that enthusiastic about preseason after the lack of transfer activity in North London, it could end up being a significant moment for the Lilywhites.
MORE SPURS STORIES
It may be the final time supporters catch a glimpse of Son Heung-min in a Tottenham shirt after it was reported that the 32-year-old is contractually obligated to play in Spurs’ friendly against Newcastle at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea (3 August).
However, more importantly, the tour will allow Frank the chance to get a closer look at his new players in action, and it has been widely reported that the Tottenham boss will use the time to decide on several players’ futures.
And Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes the 53-year-old could make some surprising decisions on the futures of some players.
“I think it’s too early for Frank to have made any decisions,” Wenham said.
“He’s going to look at players over pre-season, which will be four or five weeks of solid training, matches, getting to know each other socially, then he’ll make decisions.
“I think it’s way too early for people to say this person is going on loan, or this person isn’t going on loan. We’ve got a big pre-season tour coming up, there will be lots of players going on that tour, and lots of opportunities for them to stake their claim.
“I’m sure Frank will make one or two surprise decisions. There might be players that impress him so much that he decides to keep them, even though they looked set to leave.”
Frank could be making a mistake
In addition to the likes of Manor Solomon, Jamie Donley and Phillips, it has been widely reported that Frank will use pre-season to take a look at some of Tottenham’s academy players.
This does not come as a surprise, as Brentford’s financial limitations meant the Dane had to make use of some of his younger talents. However, this approach may not be as successful with Tottenham, who are hoping to make an impact in the UEFA Champions League next season.
Time and time again, Spurs’ academy products bailed them out last season, and their impact should not be understated. However, if Tottenham wish to push on, they need more experience.
