Thomas Frank has huge decisions to make on Tottenham’s squad ahead of next season.

The former Brentford manager must first assess which members of the Tottenham squad he sees as part of his future in North London and which players are already vying for the exit door.

All areas of the pitch are due for an upgrade. However, the defence seems like the area of the pitch where there could be the most movement this summer.

One of the highest-profile cases that remains to be resolved is the future of Cristian Romero, who has been linked with a move to Atletico Madrid.

Pedro Porro’s long-term prospects at Spurs are also in doubt, with the latest reveal on Djed Spence raising further questions.

Frank holds a long-term interest in Spence

Spence has had somewhat of a renaissance at Tottenham, having previously been cast in the cold.

The 24-year-old has still struggled to lock down a starting spot after waiting over two years to make his Premier League debut, and despite a purple patch this season, Spence saw his appearances diminish again towards the end of the campaign.

However, the Englishman could be in for a welcome boost as, according to Football London (11 June), the right-back has been the focus of long-held interest and bids in previous years from Brentford.

Under Ange Postecoglou, the former Middlesbrough defender was mainly used as an auxiliary left-back to cover for the injured Destiny Udogie, but he will hope to return to his favoured right-hand side next season.

Given Spence’s physical and ball-carrying abilities better suit Frank’s style of play, he may be reinstated in his preferred role, which could prompt the Dane to offload Porro and use the funds to focus on other key areas of the pitch.

Porro’s creativity would need replacing

Porro has not always covered himself in glory defensively, though his passion for the club is infectious and has earned him a soft spot among supporters.

What he does offer in abundance is a huge threat in attack and is arguably the best passer in the team, along with James Maddison.

With the midfielder missing for large portions of the season, Porro was seen as one of the chief creators in the squad.

His ball-striking abilities and his eye for a cross have been crucial for Tottenham on multiple occasions, and would need to be adequately replaced should he depart.
