Gareth Bale is one of several players to leave Tottenham and move on to stardom away from the North London club.

The forward was a slow burner at the start of his Spurs career, but Bale became a Premier League icon before moving to Real Madrid.

Another former Tottenham man who went on to achieve greatness was Luka Modrić, who went on to win the Ballon d’Or in 2018.

Modric became an investor and minority co-owner of Swansea City, and now Bale is linked with a similar role at Cardiff City.

There was talk that Bale was set to front a US-based private equity group’s potential takeover of Plymouth Argyle.

However, more recent reports state that the Welshman approached to buy Cardiff City instead, although it was said to have been rejected.

Football finance expert Dan Plumley has provided insight on the proposed approach while speaking exclusively to Tottenham News.

“When people break cover and say they’re interested in fronting up talks, like the link to Gareth Bale, often football club takeovers generally happen behind closed doors, rather than out in public display.

“We still need to take it with a pinch of salt, notwithstanding that if there is any truth in it, and something is going on behind the scenes, then yes, it’s perfectly plausible that Bale will lean on some contacts that he’s got throughout his network.

“We know that that’s how the football industry works in terms of, you’re only one or two phone calls away from the next person, and it is quite a small network.

“Of course, Spurs or Levy can’t be directly involved with anything in terms of conflict of interest, but you’re likely to lean on the network where you can.

“What we’ve seen from the footballers being involved is that it’s more about leveraging a piece of celebrity endorsement, in a way.

“You would still want a good management structure around that, you still need the financial backing. You need very deep pockets and people who know how to work across all aspects of the game.

“It’s more about the fronting of it and the leverage that can bring, rather than them being involved in the day-to-day running.”

Which former footballers are involved in the running of clubs?

If Bale is successful in his venture, then he will follow several British footballers who are already involved with clubs.

David Beckham is the co-owner and public face of Inter Miami and played an instrumental role in bringing Lionel Messi to the American club.

Gary Neville and several other Man United players own a majority stake in League Two outfit Salford City.
