Archie Gray was deployed as a late substitute as England Under-21s reached the European Under-21 Championship final with a 2-1 win over the Netherlands on Wednesday evening.

The versatile star came on for two-goal Harvey Elliott at the beginning of stoppage time to help the Young Lions see out the crucial closing stages in Bratislava.

It was Archie’s third appearance of the tournament after the 19-year-old started his side’s first two games against Czechia and Slovenia.

The result means England are now one match away from retaining the title they won two years ago.

To do that, they must beat 2021 winners Germany, whose 3-0 victory over France in the other semi-final in Kosice on Wednesday means that the tournament is unfortunately over for Mathys Tel and Wilson Odobert.

Both of our front men started for France and Mathys went close to scoring on two occasions, but ultimately the Germans proved too strong. Mathys played the full game while Wilson was substituted on 64 minutes.

The final – a rematch of England’s third game in the group stage, which Germany won 2-1 – takes place on Saturday evening in Bratislava (8pm UK).
