Tottenham have been interested in signing Andy Robertson since the January transfer window.
Tottenham Hotspur managed to avoid dropping down to the Championship after securing a win over Everton on the final day.
After such a wretched couple of years, the Tottenham hierarchy will undoubtedly want to back head coach Roberto De Zerbi, especially after he turned things around in the second half of the season and achieved his objective of keeping the club afloat in the top flight. Now, the work has begun on strengthening the squad.
Marcos Senesi is set to arrive at Tottenham on a free transfer from Bournemouth on July 1. The Argentine international’s move to N17 had been contingent on the club securing Premier League survival, and now that obstacle has been removed, his transfer is set to go through.
Liverpool great Andy Robertson also had an agreement in principle with Spurs. The Scotland skipper had come close to joining the North London club in the January transfer window, but Liverpool’s reluctance to weaken their squad mid-season and the lack of quality replacement prevented the deal from happening. Now, there’s been a positive development on the player’s future.
Tottenham reach verbal agreement with Andy Robertson
According to transfer news guru Fabrizio Romano on X, Tottenham have reached a verbal agreement to sign Andy Robertson on a free transfer from Liverpool. Despite Juventus trying to hijack the deal, the 32-year-old wants to join Spurs. He was keen on a move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in January, and his position hasn’t changed at all.
Robertson is soon set to be a free agent after his departure from Liverpool was confirmed. The Scot played his final game in a Liverpool shirt against Brentford at Anfield on the final day of the 2025/26 season last weekend. Earlier this week, Juventus emerged as another contender to bring in the experienced defender.
However, Robertson has had his heart set on a move to Tottenham since the winter transfer window, and the move is finally going to go through in the foreseeable future. The left-back will arrive in North London with quite the pedigree. He has vast experience and a proven record at the highest level, having made 378 appearances for the Reds and won multiple trophies.
Even though he is 32 and past his prime, the Scotland star still possesses the ability to impact games at both ends of the pitch. Robertson’s arrival would not only enhance the Tottenham squad but also add much-needed competition for Destiny Udogie. Having an experienced, proven figure in Robertson would aid Udogie’s development at the club. Also, this transfer could see Spurs loan out Souza to a competent European league to get much-needed experience and develop his game.
All in all, Spurs have done a smart job by reaching a verbal agreement with the former Liverpool star. And Robertson rejecting a move to Juventus demonstrates the faith he has in De Zerbi’s project at Tottenham.
