Tottenham have prioritised addressing the defensive problems in their squad.
Tottenham Hotspur have now shifted their focus entirely to the upcoming summer transfer window after avoiding relegation on the final day of the season.
Roberto De Zerbi has already stressed the need for a rebuild this summer, and it appears that the club are keen to act. Several outlets have claimed over the last few weeks that Liverpool star Andy Robertson and Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi have agreed to join Spurs this summer as long as Roberto De Zerbi’s men remain in the Premier League.
The N17 bosses have identified the defence as the priority position, and the possible acquisitions of Robertson and Senesi on free transfers from Liverpool and Bournemouth, respectively, will help address it. However, Tottenham are keeping tabs on more than one centre-back amid the uncertain future of Cristian Romero. And recent speculation shows they are planning to raid Manchester City to bolster their defensive unit.
Tottenham plot move for Manchester City star
According to a report from The Independent, Tottenham are considering a move for Manchester City defender John Stones this summer. The Man City star has been shortlisted to bring in some much-needed leadership and experience to the spine of De Zerbi’s squad.
A six-time Premier League champion, John Stones’ legendary chapter at Man City came to an end on Sunday. Having lifted multiple trophies along with half a dozen league titles, the Englishman has evolved into one of the most decorated modern-day defenders in the club’s history. He formed a key part of the winning machine that the Sky Blues became under Pep Guardiola, racking up 19 goals and nine assists in 295 appearances.
Spurs are keen on Stones, but the report adds that the 32-year-old will come under even stronger consideration if any primary targets fall through. This means he isn’t the first-choice defensive target of the North London club, though his tactical profile seamlessly aligns with De Zerbi’s possession-based style of play.
Signing Stones would be risky
Stones has been among the best modern-day Premier League centre-halves, thanks to his blend of technical ability, physicality and leadership. The England international’s capability to play out from the back, step into midfield, and operate within a high defensive line would align directly with De Zerbi’s tactical demands. Plus, should Romero depart Spurs, he’ll be able to fill the leadership void on and off the pitch.
While Stones can still offer a couple of years at a high level after recently turning 32, his injury record at City simply cannot be overlooked. He had three separate injuries this past campaign that limited him to only nine Premier League outings. The defender missed 24 games in total, 10 fewer than the 2024/25 campaign’s 34. The ex-Everton man also had injury-ravaged 2023/24 and 2022/23 seasons.
