Leeds United sold three of their key players after missing out on promotion during the 2023/24 campaign.

Daniel Farke did an excellent job navigating the chaos following our relegation in terms of all the outgoings, but we couldn’t quite get over the line in the end, losing to Southampton in the play-off final.

As a result, Archie Gray, along with Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter, were all sold by United as a consequence of missing out on promotion.

However, Gray is seemingly one step closer to an emotional homecoming amid the latest transfer news at Tottenham.

Tottenham looking at new midfielders, Archie Gray may want to leave as a result

When Roberto De Zerbi took over at Spurs, his objective was simple: to keep them in the Premier League.

The Italian oversaw seven Premier League games last season, winning three, drawing two and losing two as Spurs hobbled over the line to secure their top-flight status on the final day.

Under De Zerbi, Gray started just one of these games and made two substitute appearances.

Although it’s a small sample size, it’s clear that De Zerbi does not fancy Gray, and the latest Spurs transfer news only reinforces this point further.

According to a report from , Spurs, alongside Man City and Arsenal, are battling to sign Sandro Tonali.

The Italian international would cost around £100million, and if Spurs are willing to spend that much, he’s not coming to sit on the bench.

If Tonali does sign for Spurs, then Gray could find his game time becoming even more limited next season with the increased competition in midfield.

That is why the 49ers must be on alert this summer when it comes to Gray being available in the transfer market, either on loan or as a permanent buy.

Leeds United should consider Archie Gray transfer reunion

If Gray does become available this summer, it’s certainly something we should consider.

The Englishman is still only 20, and would provide fantastic depth in our midfield, even if he would not start every game.

Even if he does not become available this summer, don’t be surprised to see Gray leave Spurs sooner rather than later, especially if he continues to slide down the pecking order under De Zerbi.

Whilst Leeds would potentially be priced out of a permanent deal, a loan move would seem more realistic with a potential option to buy.

Gray, taking the place of Ilia Gruev, for example, in our squad would be a monumental upgrade.

Even if a reunion is not on the cards, I wonder if Gray regrets his move to Spurs.

They’ve been battling at the bottom of the table for the two seasons he’s been there. In addition to this, it looks as though he’s not at the forefront of De Zerbi’s plans for next season.

So whilst it would not be a transfer I’d prioritise immediately, the Gray situation at Spurs is certainly one the 49ers should keep an eye on.
