Daniel Levy is never short of controversy surrounding him at Tottenham.

Levy cuts a largely unpopular figure in North London, as years of cautious spending and poor decision-making have seen the Lilywhites fail to maximise their potential.

A reluctance to spend big on potential transfer targets has held Spurs back on numerous occasions, but it looks as though that could be set to change following the appointment of Thomas Frank.

Levy is well aware that his decision to dismiss Ange Postecoglou will receive yet more scrutiny if he doesn’t back Frank in the transfer market, and as such, several lucrative deals are being lined up.

Tottenham want to sign Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong

Tottenham have already been linked with Kyle Walker-Peters this summer, and now they have been tipped to secure a move for another right-back in Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong.

MORE SPURS STORIES

The 19-year-old has enjoyed a breakthrough season at Stamford Bridge, and Levy looks as though he could be ready to buck the trend that he has established of not doing business with Chelsea to facilitate a move.

Spurs are one of several sides interested in a move for Acheampong, having tracked his progress for some time, according to The Independent (26 June).

Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle are also monitoring the defender, who is said to be keen to secure more first-team opportunities as he looks to progress his career.

There is a belief among the interested parties that Chelsea would be open to selling the teenager for £35million, as they look to maintain the constant PSR turnover that they have established in recent years.

Such is Tottenham’s rivalry with the Blues that any attempt from Levy to bring Acheampong across the capital would surely result in plenty of mixed opinions in N17.

Spurs shouldn’t fall into the trap of helping their rivals

Tottenham will be desperate to improve on their dismal showing in the Premier League last term. However, they must be careful not to lend a helping hand to one of their biggest rivals by doing business for Acheampong.

The full-back has shown once again in the FIFA Club World Cup that he is an impressive young talent, but it would not be at all wise for Tottenham to part with £35m to bring in a player with such limited first-team experience.

They may well be admirers of the prospect, but making such a lucrative move for the youngster would only help their rivals in the short term.

It is highly likely that Chelsea are considering selling Acheampong to fund other additions to their current squad, and Spurs would be facilitating that by engaging in business.

Acheampong is undoubtedly a desirable player to have in the long term, but unless Levy can negotiate a cut-price deal for the teenager, he shouldn’t fall for Chelsea’s tricks.
