Newcastle United have been linked with a move for Tottenham Hotspur striker Dominic Solanke in a week when the England international admitted there were no excuses for his current side in their battle against relegation from the Premier League.
The former Liverpool and Bournemouth frontman worked under current Magpies head coach Eddie Howe during his time at the Vitality Stadium and remained with the Cherries when Howe departed during the summer of 2020. Solanke helped Bournemouth return to the Premier League just over two years later and had scored 77 goals and provided 29 assists in 216 appearances by the time Spurs were tempted into making a successful £65m offer for his services during the summer of 2024.
Although the striker has struggled with injuries during his time in North London, he still has a respectable goalscoring record of 21 goals in 59 appearances - but he has been unable to inspire his side in their bid to avoid what could be considered to be a shock relegation from the top flight this season.
Speaking about his side’s struggles at the wrong end of the Premier League table after the midweek defeat against Crystal Palace, Solanke said: “We've just had a big conversation. We know the position we are in is definitely not where we want to be so we need to figure out how we are going to get out of it as soon as possible. We know there's been difficulties but we're not in a position to make any excuses anymore. We need to do the job on the pitch and I think it is easy to say that we want to be better, but we need to make sure we are better on the pitch.”
With Spurs now firmly in the battle to avoid the drop, the Daily Mail have reported Solanke has ‘emerged as a summer target’ for Newcastle as they look to boost a forward line that has struggled for goals this season. The report also claims current Magpies forward Will Osula is attracting interest from Crystal Palace and Aston Villa ahead of what they have claimed could be a ‘summer of change’ at St James Park.
Liverpool ‘in front’ of Arsenal in race for Magpies star
Several Newcastle United players have been the subject of transfer speculation in recent weeks - and Anthony Gordon has been prominent amongst them.
The former Everton forward has experienced mixed fortunes during the current season but has scored 15 goals and provided five assists in 41 appearances in all competitions. His form has reportedly increased interest in his services and former Everton CEO Keith Wyness believes there is a two-horse race for his signature with Arsenal and Liverpool set to go head-to-head this summer.
He told Football Insider: “His performances haven’t been great. He got booed off, I believe, at the weekend when Everton won up there. And of course, he wasn’t well received by the Everton fans as well. I think Arsenal may be a very good option for him, but I don’t see him fitting in quite that well into the Arsenal squad as I think he might do in Liverpool. So I think it’s still a two-horse race. And I’m not so sure Arsenal are really that keen right now. I think they will wait and see. But no, I think Liverpool, to me, have still got their heads in front.”
