Tottenham need to secure a point against Everton on the final day of the season to maintain their top-flight status.

It is make-or-break for Tottenham Hotspur on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign as they take on Everton at home, needing a point to guarantee Premier League status.

Things have come down to the last day, where Spurs and West Ham are battling to avoid the final relegation spot. Roberto De Zerbi’s frustrations continued in midweek when his side lost 2-1 to Chelsea. That was the golden opportunity for the Lilywhites to get a positive result at Stamford Bridge and seal their fate.

Instead, losing to bitter London rivals have reignited West Ham’s hopes of staying in the top flight at their expense. Spurs, though, remain in the driving seat in the relegation battle with a two-point cushion over the 18th-placed Hammers, who host Leeds United on Sunday.

The Tottenham players appear to be fighting hard for the badge, and it is fair to say that De Zerbi has got the best out of his squad since taking over the reins from Igor Tudor in April. The Italian tactician knew the remit when he took the job, but it still does not change the fact that it is frustrating to operate with a squad beset by injuries.

The equation is straightforward for the Lilywhites. They must avoid defeat at the hands of Everton on Sunday. Should West Ham register a win over Leeds United, and Spurs get a draw with the Toffees, the superior goal difference would see De Zerbi’s side continue their stay in the top flight.

Now, Paul Merson has dropped his prediction on Tottenham vs. Everton. The Sky Sports pundit feels the atmosphere at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will be “extremely nervy”, and Everton scoring first will increase the pressure on the home side. Yet, he is backing Spurs to get a draw and remain safe in the top flight at the expense of the Hammers.

“This is such a hard game to call. Everton have been good away from home recently. I expect them to go out and play without fear, which can make life difficult for Spurs,” Paul Merson wrote in his column for Sportskeeda.

“Everton have the front four that can hurt Tottenham, and if that happens, it will set the cat among the pigeons. I saw Spurs against Leeds, and they looked nervous after conceding the equaliser. It can happen again this week. I believe the atmosphere will be extremely nervy on Sunday and the Spurs players will feel it.

“I’m backing them to hang on for a draw. Tottenham to avoid relegation, but I don’t see them being part of the top six next season!”

No excuses on the final day of the season!

It promises to be an intriguing contest for neutral supporters, especially considering the Lilywhites have struggled at home in the league this season. As Merson rightly points out, De Zerbi’s side looked nervous after conceding the equaliser against Leeds last week, continuing their wretched home record.
