Cristian Romero is in line to replace Son Heung-min as Tottenham captain after major exit news.

Romero was believed to have been close to Ange Postecoglou and is thought to have taken the news of the Australian’s departure particularly hard.

The centre-back has been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid this summer, and many believed Postecoglou’s departure would increase the likelihood of that transfer going ahead.

However, Romero could now be offered the armband in North London after an update on Son, which might convince the defender to remain at Tottenham.

Tottenham are willing to sell Son this summer

As reported by The Times (17 June), Tottenham are prepared to sell Son this summer.

MORE SPURS STORIES

Son is open to a departure, but Tottenham are commercially contracted to have the 32-year-old play in a pre-season friendly against Newcastle United at the Seoul World Cup Stadium in South Korea (3 August).

However, Son could be sold after the clash with the Magpies, and Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes this could have a knock-on effect on Romero and Rodrigo Bentancur.

“Romero will be the new captain if Son departs the club,” Wenham said.

“If Romero stays, that could lead to Bentancur renewing his contract, and that would be the new bedrock of Tottenham moving forward.

“I know we’ve seen those comments from Diego Simeone. However, at the moment, it doesn’t look as though Atletico are willing to pay what Romero is worth. This is a player being eyed up as the next Argentina captain.

“Therefore, selling him on the cheap is not an option, and it doesn’t look like Atletico are willing to pay the amount of money Romero is worth.”

Romero would be a good leader at Tottenham

Romero joined Tottenham from Atalanta in 2021 and has since become a key player in North London.

His performance in the UEFA Europa League final demonstrated his leadership qualities. As a result, Tottenham would benefit if Romero stayed to lead the Lilywhites into the UEFA Champions League.
